while studio 1-a gets an election makeover downstairs. >> that's all ahead of the election of course. the top story this weekend, another horrific shooting, this time at a yoga studio in tallahassee, florida. two people killed before the shooter turned the gun on himself. matt bradley is joining us now with the overnight details. good morning to you. >> good morning. it was over almost as soon as it began. responding officers arrived only minutes after it started so when they got there, the gunfire stopped. the question now, why did it happen? >> breaking overnight, tragedy in tallahassee, a gunman opening fire at a yoga studio in florida killing two and wounded five others before fatally shooting himself. >> we just heard pow, pow, pow, and we saw people running down the stairs. >> police say the shooter opened fire just after 5:30 friday evening. >> all indications are this is the act of a single person.

there's no immediate threat to our community. >> melissa tended to survivors. >> the gentleman that came in apparently tried to fight off the attacker and he had quite a few wounds on his face. >> she recounted the victim's stories. >> they said he came in and he had a black bag and he pulled it out. as he went to go load it everybody started pounding on the windows and the walls to let people know. >> the victims have been identified as nancy and mora brinkley. the republican candidate for florida governor called the news heartbreaking, sending prayers to the victims. and tallahassee's democratic mayor praised the quick response. they're facing off in a tight race for the governor's seat on tuesday. gillam returning to tallahassee

putting his campaign on hold. that race is one to watch on tuesday. tragedies like this one could have an effect. much of the rhetoric between these two candidates and their polar opposites has turned on crime and gun control, peter. >> matt, thank you for that. >> our other big story this morning, a race to the finish for democrat and republicans in the final days before the midterm. just three days to go until america votes and president trump has a packed schedule. he'll be heading to seven states over the next three days. and former president barrack obama will also be making a few more campaign stops in indiana and illinois. we have it all covered for you this morning. let's begin with kelly o'donnell. she's traveling with the president that will headline a rally later today in montana. kelly, good morning. >> good morning. the president's travel itinerary in this push reads like a road map of the country's hottest senate races and he will be here today trying to help a republican challenger defeat the

state's democratic incumbent senator. the president is going to places where he won in 2016 hoping to turn his voters out by tuesday. >> packing a pair of rallies into his friday night. >> thank you. >> a road trip fuelled by a strong october jobs report. >> what job numbers we had today. did you hear? >> in a frenzied final push toward tuesday, the president made clear the issues motivating his voters. >> between justice kavanaugh and the caravans, you people are energized. >> but for all of his focus on winning, the president acknowledged democrats could take control of the house. >> it could happen. it could happen. we're doing very well, and we're doing really well in the senate. but it could happen. >> then his counterpunch. >> if you don't want to be saying the words, speaker pelosi

for the next two years. >> feeling the pressure, he watched his predecessors. >> barrack h. obama. >> return to the campaign trail. >> he had a very small crowd. >> president trump who was often criticized for disregarding facts himself, accused the former president of being untruthful on issues like obamacare. >> lie after lie, broken promise after broken promise. that's what he did. >> the trump's midterm message boils down to defining the choice for voters on his terms, painting democrats as dangerous. >> a blue wave would equal a crime wave. very simple. and a red wave equals jobs and security. >> the president's long time lawyer said he heard president trump use racist language on

multiple occasions over the years. he said i told trump that the rally looked vanilla on television. trump responded that's because black people are too stupid to vote for me. end quote. has the white house commented or the president himself commented? >> the white house has ignored this. they really distanced themselves from michael cohen who was of course once a defender and loyalist and is now one of the more prom ninent detractors. of course in the past he defended the president on these comments saying he was not racist and he came out publicly in part of the timing, trying to make an impact on voters before the election. cohen himself pleaded guilty to a series of financial crimes and in the past defended the president and now he's saying people should know about some of their personal conversations in the past. from the white house, nothing. >> all right, kelly, thank you. >> president trump's predecessor barrack obama not pulling any punches himself, going all out on the campaign trail. unusual for a past president.

he's taken a break today. but in friday he stopped in florida and georgia. there's some hotly contested races for senate and governor. katie, good morning to you. >> good morning, peter. the latest polls in this race has stacey abrams and her opponent within a single point of each other, and there's races like this happening across the country with razor thin margins. president obama hoping he can push those fighting democrats across the victory line. >> if you turn out on tuesday to vote, change starts to happen. hope starts to happen. >> former president obama calling on all democrats to vote in tuesday's midterm election. from wisconsin to pennsylvania -- >> i can see a great awakening happening. >> to florida. he's saving his final stops for

states with tight races like florida where a senate seat and the governor's race are both toss ups. his speeches focused on social justice and inclusivity but also took aim at what he called the failures of republicans. >> you got republicans out there saying, oh, well we will protect. let's call it what it is. it's a lie. >> small minded supporte-- they circling to hear about the issues he cares about. >> had two or three jobs. >> georgia's governor's race is in a dead heat. if stacy abrams wins, she will become the country's first black female governor. >> how big of a impact do you think obama has? >> most in attendance needed no convincing but perhaps the last

push from a familiar voice will get them to the polls. >> if you don like what's going on right now, don't complain, don't get anxious, vote. >> the democrats bringing out everybody they got. even oprah winfrey on the trail. president obama sounding hoarse. he says he hasn't been doing this for awhile. what is president obama's schedule going to look like? >> yeah, his schedule is pretty packed too, peter. he heads to gary indiana where he's going to m ka pacampaign f senator joe donnolley. he has a full schedule almost right up until election day. >> thank you. >> a national political correspondent for nbc news getting ready for a big time. thanks for coming in this morning. this is the most heated midterm election we have seen in a

generation. so will we see a blue wave? is it likely the democrats will take over the house? >> they certainly have -- i think they're considered favorites to take over the house this morning. the senate would be an outside shot. what makes this different than the past is the enthusiasm we're seeing on both sides and we saw this in the last nbc news poll we took a couple of weeks ago. democratic enthusiasm is through the roof. we can see this on your screen. three quarters of democrats saying they're very interested in the midterm election but that republican number climbed up almost to the level as the democrats. to see both numbers that high for a midterm election, that's extraordinary. >> the senate obviously looking tough, at least by the latest polls we have seen for the democrats to be able to take over the senate. there's obviously places that are trying to protect folks in north dakota, missouri, florida. what are you going to be watching in terms of the senate on wednesday? >> they're playing all over the

place. in specifically states that donald trump won. you can get a sense of what they're talking about. talking so much about is ted cruz going to survive there? he has consistently lead in the poll. you can see there this is the average, a 7 point lead for cruz. democrats are trying to take him out. if you go to tennessee, this is a state they think because their candidate is so personally popular, they think he might have a chance. claire mccaskill trying to hold on in missouri. maybe a coup of points behind there. heitkamp the most endangered democratic incumbent. this is a state trump won by nearly 40 points. democrats have to get a coup of those on tuesday night. >> when it comes to governors races there's two candidates that could make history. then we have stacey abrams that would be the first black governor in history.

>> turn out is so important for democrats, especially in georgia. the polling in florida, democrats have been very encouraged by. it's a small lead but a pretty steady lead for him in this race. georgia, when you watch the results come in tuesday, it is a run off state for its governor's election. so if neither candidate crosses 50% on tuesday night, even if one is ahead of the other by a couple of points, they go into a r runoff. >> let's talk about the president's travel. we know politicians often tip their hand, what they're looking at internally by what they're looking at. montana and florida today, what do you note in the places he's trying to get. >> senate races. we're talking about the house and the senate and the republicans have been better on the senate side. all the trump states being the battleground for the senate. there is a scenario and you saw

over the last couple of months. but the caravan is nowhere near the border just yet. still the military is already here. >> this morning, with the first of three caravans still several hundred miles away from the u.s. border, the military is already beginning to fan out across southern texas. these troops reinforcing this bridge. they're part of the first wave of up to 15,000 troops that president trump says will help secure the u.s. border. >> alex rodriguez is a vietnam veteran and strongly opposes the president's decision. >> this is not an invasion. >> estimates of the caravan's sizes vary widely. according to officials about 8,000 people are making their way toward the u.s. >> an enormous fraud is being perpetrated on the american people. >> she says she's a registered republican who voted for

president trump, a decision she now regrets. >> why do you think this is happening now? >> it's happening now because of the midterms. >> many in the caravans are women and children that say they're fleaing gang -- fleeing gang violence in central america. >> i'd bring every troop i could find. >> he says he's constantly seeing immigrants crossing the rio grande on to his property. he supports the troop deployment. >> what do you say to those that argue this is a waste of taxpayer money? >> they don't live down here. >> so what is the military doing right now? so far installing chain link fencing. troops have been sent here before but their presence is expected to be more visible, just three days before the midterms. >> gabe, thank you. >> let's check in with dylan for

our first check of the weather. >> good morning, guys. we had really heavy rain overnight. the heaviest of it moving across new england. possibly a reported tornado in rhode island and we could see severe storms through new england. flash flood watches and warnings in effect for 6 million people as the heavy rain is still falling at this time. this will continue to move up to the northeast and a quick clipper system will follow behind it but not produce a lot of additional rain or snow in the northeast. winds could we've got pretty clear skies now in san francisco. temperatures are in the 50s, and we're expecting them to be fairly mild for your saturday. as you head out the door in hayward, 55 degrees. 54 through san jose. 49 in palo alto. we're going to be developing these strong, gusty conditions. already seeing that in the mt. diablo range area, which is why there's a red flag warning in effect for the east bay hills and the north bay mountains. expect to see those winds

victims. nearby, rally protesting his trip. mail bomb suspect cesar sayoc made his first court appearance. >> he faces five federal charges. including mailing explosives. his defense says the fingerprint to identify him was preliminary. another package gom discovered in an atlanta post office. the package addressed to cnn. notorious boston mafia crime boss whitey bulger was killed. authorities now believe he was beaten repeatedly with a lock in a sock. the brutal attack taking place inside the 89-year-old's cell, just hours after he arrived at this west virginia prison. a boeing passenger plane crashed off the coast of indonesia 13 minutes after takeoff. >> indonesian officials believe all 189 people on board were

55 as you head out the door in hayward and in through concord, 54 degrees. i want to show you a quick check of your temperature trend into the afternoon because we are expecting a fairly beautiful day. but we're going to keep the increased chance of fire danger at least through the midday today and into early sunday morning because of those increased winds. and we are still dealing with relatively low humidity which means dry conditions. aside from that, temperatures will be in the 70s, inching into the 80s through the interior valleys. i'll break down when we can expect to see changes in the forecast as far as your weekend goes and, of course, i'll get more into that red flag warning coming up at 7 colin kaeperni:0. >> see you then. lanes of 880 are back open in the south bay after a massive fire believed to be started by people in a homeless encampment. in video shown near the minutes eight san jose airport, you see the flames climbing up the hill to an overpass. southbound 880 had to be shut down, causing a traffic back up

that stretched for miles. there's the video. fire crews got a handle on the flames. no injuries were reported. residents say the flothreat of e is constant. >> this has happened so many times. when i moved in five years ago, within the first week we had three major fires. >> we ask that caltrans maintain the land so that when homeless people are back there they don't start a fire and endanger ourselves, our pets, our children, our home. >> there are photos of debris found in between their home and 880. neighbors are frustrated because they don't feel the city is orcals transis doing enough -- or caltrans is doing enough. turning to hope. jewish people from around the world are coming together for the first sabbath after 11 people were killed last saturday at a synagogue in pittsburgh. the solidarity was present at temple sinai in oakland last night. security was tight as guards were checking bags at the door.

the midterms, president trump and former president obama taking swings at each other on the campaign trail. >> if you don't like what's going on right now, don't just complain. vote. >> a blue wave would equal a crime wave. >> and for the first time president trump conceded republicans could lose control of the house of representatives. >> two people are dead after an accident at an amazon warehouse building in baltimore overnight. a 50 foot wall collapsed as a storm rolled through. that storm part of a major system that pounded the east coast. >> this morning, a police chief in texas is being celebrated as a hero. he rescued a baby that was not breathing and the whole thing was caught on his body cam. the fan flagged down by frantic family members at a traffic light. he helped resuscitate the baby as paramedics alived. >> actor alec baldwin is telling his side of the story after he was arrested for allegedly

attacking another person all over a parking spot here in manhattan. alec is denying he punched anymore. >> he is speaking out calling the allegations egregiously misstated. the allegation that i punched anyone over a parking spot is false. he was charged friday with third degree assault and harassment, both misdemeanors. the incident happened in front of baldwin's new york city apartment building where a 49-year-old driver apparently took a sparking space baldwin thought was his. that's when officials say it got physical. some reports saying baldwin punched the other driver sending him to the hospital. baldwin's neighbors were surprised. >> he looks perfectly calm and normal. >> these days, baldwin is best known for his emmy-winning portrayal of president trump on saturday night live. >> i said i was going to run

east ward quickly but it will produce significant amounts of snow in the highest elevations. a dusting to an inch or so through the dakotas and pockets of heavier rain through the upper midwest. especially minneapolis st. paul and also chicago sunday night. you could see bans of heavier rain. as for snowfall totals up to a foot to a foot and a half of snow especially through the higher elevations back through the northern rockies and an inch or so through north and possibly even south dakota and then as far as rain is concerned, we should see half an inch up

this morning, some of the internet and social media's most popular sites are taking action. they're ready to fight any sort of election interference ahead of tuesday's midterms. >> up to two-thirds of americans get their news from social media. facebook and reddit are taking major steps to help. >> reporter: as the campaign rallies come to a close. the final days and hours of the midterms will be battled out not just on the campaign trail but on social media, as well. the pressure is on facebook and other tech giants to get it right this time. >> welcome to the war room. >> reporter: thank you. facebook is counting on this new war room to combat false information and attempts to suppress the vote. how much does a war room like this make a difference? >> yeah. so, a war room is superimportant and is a really important tool in our overall arsenal.

when it comes to an election, an election is on a fixed date. and every moment counts. no substitute for people working side by side and face to face to enable rapid decisionmaking. >> reporter: facebook engineers are running drills saying they can take down bad information within two hours of spotting it. their mission to prevent another 2016 dezaisaster when the compa says russian interference reached americans. where are the trets coming from? >> there's a wide range of actors to try to engage. we have seen content emanating from russia. as everyone knows. from iran. we have seen domestic-sourced content. actors within the united states looking to target public debate. >> reporter: the threats keep coming. just last week, more than 1 million users were following pages from iran, targeted americans. is reddit ready for the midterms? >> i think so.

>> reporter: reddit is bracing for election day, too. it's the fifth most popular website in the u.s. a breeding ground for misinformation and conspiracies. is there nor activity from russian-linked sites on reddit versus 2016? >> i would say our sophisticati sophistication, our ability to detect it is a lot higher. >> reporter: to truly safeguard the u.s. elections, silicon valley insiders say it's critical for lawmakers and law enforcement in washington to do more to stop further russian interference. >> these are the kind of things the that the tech companies condition do by themselves. >> reporter: for "today," jolen rks kent, nbc news. we heard from the guy from facebook saying we can get bad information down the n two hours. think about where that information can get within two hours.

woman's car. she was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries miraculously. it could be closed to 4:00 p.m. as crews work to clear the beam and debris. drivers are being diverted at 23rd avenue. if you're going that way, you're encouraged to take 580 as an alternate route. on to another freeway problem. lanes of southbound 880 back open in the south bay after a massive fire believed to be started by people in a homeless encampment. in a video shot near minnetta san jose airport, you see flames climbing up the hill to an overpass. neighbors could see the same thing from their back yards. southbound 880 had to be shut down, closing a back up that stretched for miles. look at that. fire crews were able to get a handle on the flames. no injuries were reported. residents say that the threat of fire in that area is constant. they shared photos with us of debris that they often find in

through tomorrow morning. we're expecting dry conditions, relatively low humidity between 18% and pair that one some warm temperatures in the upper 80s for some spots, and that elevates our fire danger by a lot. definitely keep this in n mind as you head out the door. temperatures will be comfortable. and then i know it doesn't feel like fall, but -- >> no. >> obviously temperatures are mild, and at least the skies are clear. i'll have a look at how long this fire danger is expected to last. of course, coming up at 7:00 a.m. >> scary. we'll stay tuned for that at 7:00. thanks. we want to start with breaking news this morning out of oakland. take a look at that. northbound lanes of 880 are shut down after a driver crashed into a steel beam. the beam was supporting the new 23rd avenue overpass. it happened around 4:00 this morning. the beam came crashing down on to the woman's car. and as you saw there, fell across all the lanes of northbound 880. traffic is completely stopped.

the driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 88 10 completely shut down -- 880 is completely shut down for a mile, high street 23rd avenue. the which says it could be closed all day until 4:00 p.m. while crews work to clear the beam and all that debris. drivers are being diverted at 23rd avenue. you're encouraged to take 580 as an alternate route. lanes of southbound 880 are back open in the south bay after a massive fire believed tofb started by people -- to have been started by people in a homeless encampment. in cell phone video shot near minnetta san jose airport, you see here flames climbing up the hill to an overpass. neighbors living behind the freeway see this view from their back yard. southbound 880 had to be shut down, causing this massive traffic back up that stretched for miles. fire crews were able to get a handle on the flames. no injuries were reported. residents tell us the threat of fire there is constant. >> this has happened so many times when i moved in here five

we're back on a saturday morning with our series fully booked where i take you inside some of the country's most popular restaurants where it is nearly impossible to get a reservation. this morning we're heading to maine, where the restaurant went old school, and the only way to get a reservation is to send in a postcard. somewhere just beyond over there in the small town of freedom, maine, is a restaurant full of heart where three to four days a week with no formal training, erin french cooks up a nine course meal at the lost kitchen. >> i was quietly raised here that in order to be successful, you couldn't be a woman working in the a restaurant in the middle of nowhere and make it work. >> how you have proved everyone wrong. >> tonight like every night is fully booked. >> we do one seating a night. i grew up cooking in a diner, so no one is going to leave here hungry. >> it was at her father's diner that french fell in love with

postcards in a matter of ten days. >> i think it's so much more than the food. i think it's the way that you make people feel. if you put your heart into something, what you could create with nothing but just love. >> and erin french is with us this morning, and erin is going to show us a few recipes out of her cook book, the lost kitchen, which is also the name of your restaurant. good morning, it's so nice to have you here. >> thanks for having me. >> thanks for leaving the peacefulness of maine to come to new york city and show us some stuff. what are you making for us? >> we're going to start with, sort of like a squash salad. we have the squash here. you can use pretty much any kind of squash you want, get something small, go to the market, any variety. quarter it or cut it in rounds and just want to brush with olive oil to get it nice and moist. you're going put a little bit of nutmeg, grate it right on top. it's a nice flavor with squash, salt, pepper and a pad of

butter. wrap it right up. this is the best way to do dishes. >> okay. i like that. >> throw it in the oven, 425, it's going to roast and steam. while that's roasting you're going to make your salad. we have apple slices here. we have some shallots with vinegar. this softens them and makes them nice and sweet. a bit of olive oil to make it nice and salady, and for sweetness, we have maple syrup. >> that's what's special about your cook book, you stick to the season and in your restaurant, you cook in the season, and these are all fall flavors. >> totally. apples and squash. i folded a little bit of thyme into this. you take the squash out, it's all nice and roasted. all we do is we're just going to take a piece and we're going to toss it right on here. i put a little bit of arugula. you could serve this as a side dish or have it for lunch. it would be a really nice lunch. >> the presentation looks so good. while we walk around to the pork

chops. i'm obsessed with pork shops. >> sheinelle has crushed the pork chop scene. >> the secret to the brine, you have to have a brine. pork chops, you've got boiling water, four cups, salt, sugar, pepper corns, bay leaves, and throw it right in, let this cool down, and once it's cool, you can put in your pork chops, let them sit overnight for 24 hours. >> in cool water. >> all the flavor is in there. you don't have to season it. it's done. >> then we're going to make our side dish, shallots with rosemary, throw in some apples, get them sauteed. add a bit of this apple brandy. if you don't want to use apple brandy, you could use apple cider or white wine. >> just to bring out that flavor. >> throw in a little butter and we have potatoes that are already cooked. they're ready, we're going to warm them up. we have apple potato salad. >> by the way, that salad is incredible. >> it's a nice complement, like applesauce and potatoes
