"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning. thank you for starting your day with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. you got an extra hour of sleep over the weekend and now time for work. >> the extra hour of sleep means the sun will be rising earlier this morning, so we are going to see mostly clear skies as you get ready to head out the door. let's head over to dublin where you see the sun coming over the hills. still 35 minutes away from sunrise. headed to work, it is chilly out there, only some upper 40s, but a quick warmup as we go into the afternoon hours, we'll be in the mid-70s by 1:00 today. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates coming up.

mike gets us out the door with the look at the commute. >> folks, bring your sunglasses. you might get the sunrise slowdown traveling on the peninsula earlier. no change to the pattern, a typical monday westbound flow building across the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. the backup over here at the bay bridge toll plaza, but cocoa county getting there is a typical pattern, a slowing and build for walnut creek there. north bay no delays, headed south over there through san rafael. nice easy drive novato down to the golden gate bridge. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:01. breaking news we've been following since we went on air at 4:30 this morning, a search for a gunman is under way right now after three people were shot. this morning, one person is dead. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is at that scene live for us and been there since early this morning. pete, what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: they are still searching for a suspect but they believe there's no immediate threat to the area. behind me on my right shoulder,

you see it's still blocked off here at the helen bine detox center in san rafael following the deadly shooting inside that center. you're seeing that investigation under way. here is information we're getting from the marin county sheriff's department. they had a shooting call roughly around 1:30 a.m. three victims all together in this shooting. two males and one female, and one of the male victims was pronounced dead on the scene. now, authorities as i mentioned are looking for a suspect. they believe there is no immediate threat to this area at this time. i want to point out information, background on the detox center, marin county's only residential detox facility providing treatment to those battling alcohol and drug addiction but it's unclear if the shooter was a client at the center. back out here live the area is blocked off at smith ranch road. we expect police here for the next several hours. we're live in san rafael, pete

suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. 6:02 right now. turning to decision 2018, in less than 24 hours, the polls will open across america to the midterm elections. at stake, who will control congress, republicans or democrats. nbc's tracie potts is live from washington, d.c., with a look at what we can expect as both sides are really making the final push for votes, tracey. tracie? >> reporter: that includes president trump who is back on the campaign trail today after leaving the south. he will focus on the midwest on the final full day of campaigning before the polls open. >> reporter: the final sprint. today president trump rallies in ohio, indiana and missouri, crisscrossing the midwest, making his final arguments. >> i need you to get your family, to get your friends, get your neighbors, get your co-workers, and to go out and vote republican.

across 300 miles. ahead of two key meetings focused on rvs in san francisco, "the examiner" obtained hard numbers on people sleeping in their vehicles. recent count found 432 vehicles being used for sleeping in san francisco. 313 were rvs. 119 more were passenger vehicles, like suvs. most are being parked in one of three neighborhoods, mission, bay view and taraval. some may be trying to get shortened their commutes there. and new a story you'll only see on "today in the bay," we're home again to one of its most powerful machines on the globe. the lawrence-livermore national laboratory unveiling sierra, the world's third fastest super computer. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us outside the lab. sierra will be used for national security but to improve our health. >> reporter: correct, laura and marcus. specifically to help look for a better way to treat certain

types of cancer. i want you to think about that high-end pc that you might have at home. it can perform 100 floating billion operations per second. this is sierra, a 125 petaflop super computer located here at the lab that can perform 125 quadrillion floating point operations per second. that's over a million times more powerful than your high-end pc. as you can see, it takes up quite a lot of room, 7,000 square feet here at the lawrence livermore lab, 240 racks of computers outfitted with ibm cpu but nvidia gpus. it's a heterogeneous architecture that will allow modeling and simulations in 3-d as opposed to just 2-d. scientists are using sierra to come up with new drug therapies for treating certain types of cancers, doing research on traumatic brain injuries, earthquake simulations.

eventually sierra used to identify the country's stockpile of nuclear weapons, since underground testing is no longer allowed. >> you think of our nuclear deterrent that we depend very heavily on, the outside world can't see the calculations we do. they can't see the results. it's classified. they can see the hardware we site and the hardware we site sends a message to the rest of the world that we take our mission seriously and tend to stay a step ahead of everybody else. >> reporter: sierra generates so much heat, the super computer must be cooled with cold water piped throughout the system and giant cooling fans in a basement directly underneath. the system requires about 12 mega watts of electricity. that's enough power for about 9,000 homes. take a look at this list on your tv screen. the fastest super computer in the world is located at the oak ridge national labe in tennessee. number two in china, number three here at the

bay. we'll talk about what we see as far as a little bit different flow. a very happy monday to you. the markets could start in the red again today, despite friday's very good jobs news. the economy is really chugging along on all cylinders. apple, though, worried investors as it announced it would no longer tell us specifically how many iphones and other gadgets it sold. apple is listed on the dow, so it pulled the dow lower. tesla is also in focus this morning. new this morning, acsituaticusa tesla does not allow its employees to call 911, even after serious injuries at its factories. instead, they need permission to call for an ambulance from the on-call doctor, who rarely allows it. acco according to a former employee. reveal part of the is it are for investigative reporting found tesla is trying to hide serious

injuries from the government and the public. among the findings tesla's contract doctors insist seriously injured workers, including one who severed a finger be sent to the emergency room in a lyft. reporter will evans from the center for investigative reporting joins me from reveal's emeryville location. tell us what you found. >> we found that the clinic was actually failing to properly treat the workers as part of an overall strategy to avoid counting the injuries. so they'd send workers back to the assembly line quite injured, even some who could barely walk. >> right, and tesla is supposed to provide the government with an accurate injury account, so that's not happening, you say. >> that's right. counting the injuries is legally mandated, and it goes into an injury rate that shows sort of the overall safety record of the

company, and tesla's really focused on showing that it's improved safety, but we found that they're just not counting injuries. >> this is the second time reveal's investigated tesla. tesla pushed back on your first report. what has tesla said about the new report? >> tesla wouldn't answer any of our questions, but they have said that they're very happy with the care that their employees are getting, and we talked to the doctor who runs the clinic who said everything is based on accurate diagnoses, and sometimes workers don't know what's best for them. >> will evans with the center for investigative reporting, thanks for being with us this morning. our coverage of one of the other issues in this got rules change, this was vicky nguyen's issue a couple years ago, story a couple years ago, about the post office. they looked at postal workers not allowed to call 911, much like let's investigation at tesla. find our investigative work

nbcbayarea.com, and the new reveal report about tesla at revealnews.org. >> concerning for those workers, very much so. thank you. a lot of people complain about their morning commute. they share their horror stories, but a lot of commuters are taking drastic steps to eels the frustration they're feeling a couple of times a day. recent survey found one in five workers are leaving their jobs to find a closer one to home. >> when you think about it, a commute can be very stressful, can really play not only into your performance at work, but really into your work/life balance as well, too, and do you it every day. >> on average, commuters are spending close to an hour a day getting to and from work, with some spending an hour each way. it's even more for a lot of people in the bay area. big time. not so much when you get up at 3:30 in the morning. perk? >> instead of changing your shift. >> some people are getting up earlier to beat the traffic.

>> true. >> this morning we have a little bit more light in the sky, as you head to work and we're going to see a cool start this morning. here is a live look outside in san francisco, and it's all cleared this morning. no fog there rolling by the bridge. we'll see some sunshine throughout the day, as you step out the door. it's 44 degrees in santa rosa and napa, and mostly some low 50s around the bay area, but as you take a look at the seven-day forecast, at the bottom of the screen, a lot of warm temperatures for the afternoon. so even though it starts out cool in morgan hill, we'll be at 51 degrees at 7:00. the warmup happens fast, and then by noon, we're at 73. 75 at 1:00 today. and if you're making plans around san ramon to go for a run, be mindful that it's chilly out there, only in the mid-40s, as you head out the door early, or maybe you're on your way to the gym. it will be in the low 70s, if you wait a little bit later this morning, and it's going to be a really pleasant day. as you get your hair styled this morning about to head out the

door, we will have some lower humidity later on today, so our humidity right now at about 77%, but overall looks like it will be another good hair day, and our highs reaching into the low 70s for palo alto. we'll see a high of 75 in san jose, and some upper 70s from morgan hill extending up through concord and our inland valleys will be in the upper 70s today, and the high pressure kind of nudging off to the west, just a little bit farther away from the bay area, but the winds circulating around that still give us a northerly wind flow, and some dry conditions throughout the week. we will see finally some changes, possibly happening through the middle of the month. look at that november 14th, we could start to see some rain moving a little bit closer to the bay area, but i still don't see any rain in our forecast. so we stay dry over the next seven days, and well above normal temperatures for most of us, about ten degrees warmer than normal, and then san francisco staying in the upper 60s all week long. now mike, the commute is a

little bit different this morning. >> folks got a little bit more sleep yesterday so they get excited, they come into work on monday early and there's an ease up and folks on the regular pattern kick in, so we saw for just about ten minutes an easier backup, and in fact, traffic getting lighter over at the bay bridge, just after qualif6:00 b 6:20, starting to get backed up again. you're not that early for work, your clock in the car probably didn't change yet. westbound highway 4 commute is building. we have that crash looks like it's over on the shoulder south 680 over at concord. there is a slower drive as well developing over here for this part of contra costa county, but it's a little bit holding off right here at 680, typically about this time we'd start to see the walnut creek interchange start to build, holding off about ten minutes so there's that sort of adjustment as the sunlight comes into the morning. folks enjoying a cup of coffee. smooth drive for the south bay, just a build for the northbound direction just starting to kick in now.

-deadly shooting right now at 6:30, we continue to follow breaking news on this monday morning. there's been a deadly shooting overnight. it happened at a san rafael detox center on smith ranch road. three people were shot, one person was killed, and the suspect still on the loose. we have a live report coming up in just moments. first want to say good morning to you as well. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we get you set before you head out the door. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the weather for you this morning. kari, what can we expect? >> a cool morning and a very nice and pleasant afternoon. as we get a look at the sunrise now over palo alto, it's going to be in the low 50s and then already at 59 degrees at 10:00 and we go into the low 70s today. little bit warmer than normal. we go across the bay headed toward the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, it will be in the low

nbc bay area sky ranger live overhead. police say someone shot three people, killing one of them, before taking off early this morning. pete suratos is live at the scene. he's been there since 4:30 this morning. >> what is the latest on the search for the shooter? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. they're still looking for the shooter in all of this but saying for right now, there's no immediate threat to this area off of smith ranch road. we showed our viewers the viewpoint from nbc bay area sky ranger. we want to show what you we're looking at from here, show you this all morning long. chp blocking off this area, following that deadly shooting inside of the detox center. let's show you guys some video from earlier, when it was a much more active scene with cops in front of this area. according to marin county sheriff's department they're saying the shooting happened roughly around 1:30 a.m. three victims were shot all together, two males and one female. it was one of the male victims that was pronounced dead on the scene from this shooting.

the two other victims were transported to a hospital. as far as the background on this detox center, it's the only residential detox center in marin county, offering services to those battling substance abuse. here is the sheriff's spokesperson speaking earlier about the search inside this morning for that shooter. >> when deputies arrived, they searched the scene and searched the area, with the assistance of chp helicopter. they were unable to locate the suspect. the suspect fled the scene. the immediate area is secure and the area no one is in danger currently in the immediate area. >> reporter: back here live where the area is blocked off on smith ranch road by chp. coroner arrived about an hour ago. we expect authorities to be here on the scene for at least the next several hours. we're live here in san rafael, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> very concerning out there,

thanks so much, pete. 6:33 right now this morning. an amber alert remains in effect for a san jose brother and sister allegedly abducted by their mother, who doesn't have custody. police say the mother and two children met at san jose's emma prur park friday with child protective services worker supervising. social worker took the 11-year-old priscilla to the restroom, and came out to find the mother and 1-year-old alexander gone. shortly after, the girl disappeared as well and is believed to be with the mother, 33-year-old diana moreria drives a gray 2012 mini cooper. the three could be headed to colorado springs. 6:34, a palo alto accused of sex crimes against a minor is due in court.

prosecutors say that dawn giannini committed crimes over a year period with a victim when they were just 14 years old. the victim is now in high school. authorities were apparently tipped off by a fellow student who noticed the victim in elicit videos posted online. giannini is a substitute teacher in elementary school but investigators do not believe she victimized her students. she is expected to enter a plea. 6:35 right now. election day is tomorrow and while many of us go to the ballots tomorrow, a lot of us have already filled in, and mailed out our ballots. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from alameda county and a way a lot of folks are casting ballots in the bay area. kris? >> reporter: listen, there is no shortage of options for to you turn in your ballot, whether you are a vote by mail voter or whether you are going to go to your local place and vote in person, and these election officers are very busy right now making sure that every one of those votes counts. let's start you off in alameda county, where we are this morning. if you vote by mail and rather drop off your ballot, rather than mail it in, so it can be counted early instead of the days after the election, there

are 25 different drop boxes from albany in the north, fremont to the south, livermore to the west. i'll post the link to where you can find that information in a moment. also contra costa county voters, you don't have to get out of your car. several thousand voters got their ballots in and "i voted" stickers on. you can drive through the elections office in martinez today and tomorrow. tomorrow by the way there's another drive-through, that one in rossmore. and san mateo county voters, by now you probably know that your voting centers are replacing your traditional polling places. mail ballots and these polling places, these voting centers open 29 days before the election for early voting. you can still drop off your mail-in ballot and vote in person there. those of you who have not voted yet, these last-minute visits by high-profile candidates are for you. democrat gavin newsom will rally with senator kamara harris and governor jerry brown in san francisco tonight at 7:00.

it is 6:43, and i'm watching the sunrise coming over the hills this morning, as we take a live look outside over san jose, sunset at 5:04 and in between, we'll have some very comfortable weather, as we check out evergreen. our east san jose neighborhood will be in the mid-70s by early afternoon, and then as we go into the rest of the week, more of the same. we'll look at that come uppiing less than five minutes. >> the top number here, 45 minutes, registering slow down the east shore freeway, san pablo to the backup at the bay bridge. slower drive across the san mateo bridge. lighting change because of the hour we gained yesterday. we'll see how that affects the rest of your commute. 6:43 right now. highway 4 is now open in contra costa county. this is after a violent chain of events. chp saying yesterday a driver

crashed into a motorcyclist near discovery bay shortly after 5:00 p.m., fled the scene, and then crashed head-on into another car, this is 500 feet away. the motorcyclist and everyone inside that second car suffered major injuries. the 33-year-old driver accused of causing both the crashes has minor injuries, but she has been arrest ted on success significae of if el know dui. the highway was shut down for a time during the investigation. the country's leading pediatricians are speaking out about the harms of spanking children. the american academy of pediatrics is calling for a ban on corporal punishment. the group says it's ineffective and may affect a child's brain development. doctors say spanking does not improve behavior over the long run and may cause more aggressive behaviors. they suggest parents use other methods of discipline that teach children right from wrong, like rewarding positive behavior.

continuing coverage for you, this plan could be a solution for a troubling problem. rise in sexual assaults in santa clara county has led to the addition of a second clinic at stanford hospital. currently there's only one clinic operating where victims can have rape kits administered miles away at valley medical center in san jose. supporters of the new clinic say someone who has just endured sexual assault should not have to go so far. >> there is definitely a need for a rape kit exam location on campus. it's a great idea. we're happy it's moving forward. >> when plans were finally announced to open the clinic on the stanford campus, concerns were raised during a county supervisor's committee meeting. it's quarter to 7:00 right now. one day until the midterm elections. >> scott mcgrew, president trump calls it the second most important election ever. >> that's right, his being the first, of course, right? so tomorrow is the midterm election. get out there and vote. lots of california issues on the ballot. we have a voter's guide at nbcbayarea.com.

the president spent the weekend flying from rally to rally in red states. here he is in tennessee last night. where he stuck to his immigration theme, warning once again of what he says is the threat of the caravan. what the president has not said much about by comparison is the incredibly strong economy. on friday, we saw some of the best job numbers in decades and something polls show voters in key districts care most about. the president has also been criticized for a campaign ad that's not only factually incorrect, it comes across to many as racist. now, cnn has refused to run that ad. but nbc did air a shorter version of the ad last night during the green bay/new england football game. nbc is our parent company. we had nothing to do with the decision. nbc has not commented as to why chose do that. debra messing took to twitter and wrote "i want you to know

i'm ashamed my network aired this disgusting racist ad. it is the antithesis of everything i believe in and whey believe our show is about." brian kemp running for governor in georgia accused the democrats in that state of trying to hack the election. kemp is also secretary of state. that means he's in the election and he's in charge of the election. he made the allegation without offering any evidence. that's become a familiar refrain. news agencies will say, without evidence, like president trump says there are middle eastern terrorists in the caravan, without offering evidence. there's no proof that they're not making it up. we will continue to cover what's going on in the midterm elections. follow me on twitter, i' i'm @scottmcgrew.

otherwise, we have some all clear skies, and then as you head out in the north bay, it's only 44 degrees in napa and santa rosa. elsewhere we have mostly some 50s on the map. if you're headed out in san jose on your way to diridon station, it will be at about 50 degrees. grab a jacket and you'll need the sunglasses, too. it will be sunny all day long as our temperatures warm up. 73 degrees at 1:00 today and as you' you're stepping out the door, getting the kids ready for school in livermore, 48 degrees. as they head out for recess, it's already in the upper 60s and low 70s. as you go back to pick them up, mid-70s there and our high reaching 79 in antioch, 76 in napa and san francisco reaching 68 degrees. 75 today in san jose and all of the sun shining into your window this morning, now that we're in the time change, as you're getting dressed, don't forget the sunglasses today, and also some light long sleeves may be keeping you comfortable throughout the day. we'll see high pressure well

west of the bay area, but the winds circulating around that giving us a northerly wind and it's going to be dry all week long. it's not going to move, so our weather stays the same. it won't be until about the middle of the month where we'll see a change in this pattern that could allow for some rain to move farther to the north, but still no rain for the bay area. so this is how our weather shapes up. upper 70s throughout the week. morning temperatures very chilly in the mid to upper 40s, and san francisco staying in the 60s throughout the whole week. as we head over to mike, you're updating the crash in san jose. >> kari, heard about a motorcycle crash north of our camera shot here. i did for a short period of time see some slowing, but then traffic flows started to smooth out once again, this is north 101 in san jose. notice the volume of traffic building but also notice how well lit this shot is. kari said you're going to need the sunglasses out of your closet or wherever you keep the glasses. the sun is out in full force for the commute. northbound 101 we see the build

another male and female are injured. this happened 1:30 on smith ranch road this morning near macinnis park golf center. no updates on their conditions yet. they're searching for that shooter in a closed off area there. we don't know if that shooter or victims are patients at the center or a motive in this situation. a new report released just a couple of hours ago accuses tesla medical staffers of ignoring workers injuries at the company's plant in fremont. that is according to the news organization reveal, which is part of this center for investigative reporting. the report found medical staffers have prevented injured workers from dialing 911 on site. other times workers had to return to their jobs without their pain levels improving. this morning, and only on "today in the bay," we spoke with the author of the report. he says the former workers believed tesla cut corners to keep up with production targets. >> counting the injuries is

legally mandated and it shows the overall safety record of the company, and tesla is really focused on showing it's improved safety. but we found that they're just not counting injuries. >> tesla declined to answer any comment. the front end of the massive caravan is in mexico city and migrants began arriving there yesterday. most walked or hitchhiked and now being housed at a local stadium. many migrants left from their home countries in central america fleeing poverty and violence. president trump has made the caravan a big issue in the buildup to tuesday's election. there are now actually three caravans slowly moving through mexico, stretched across 300 miles. new hope this morning for alzheimer's patients, and the people who love them. doctors at west virginia university are working on a promising new therapy.

a patient wears a helmet that delivers ultrasound waves to the brain. patients also get an injection of so-called microbubbles, which open up what they call the blood brain barrier. >> the foal is technologies to open the barriers in the ult ultrasound and allow the plaques hopefully to be reduced and allow the clinical symptoms of alzheimer's to be improved as well. we want to be also realistic. this is an investigational study and we need to conduct the research study, but so far, so good. >> the treatment is still in clinical trial. it would be great to see if it continues to do well. the bay area home again to one of the most powerful machines on the globe. the lawrence-livermore national laboratory unveiling sierra, the world's third fastest super computer. scientists at the lab are using sierra to try to come up with new drug therapies or treating certain types of cancers as well as doing research on traumatic brain injuries and earthquake simulations. eventually sierra will be used to verify the stockpile of nuclear weapons. that super computer doing a lot of super computing.
