president trump making three more stops today, missouri, indiana and right here in cleveland, ohio. tomorrow, we're going to learn if this surge of democratic energy translates into votes and if trump can motivate his base of fierce supporters, even when his name is not on the ballot. with just 24 hours to go, trump delivering his closing argument as americans prepare to render their verdict on his first two years in office. >> i think we're doing great in the house. i think we're doing great in the senat senate, but who knows? >> reporter: in the final days before the midterms, the president focusing on states he won in 2016, like tennessee, trying to defend a republican senate seat from changing hands. >> go out and vote republican. do it now, do it tuesday. >> reporter: on tap today, three more red states, ohio, indiana and missouri, where he will be joined by right-wing firebrands, sean hannity and rush limbaugh. the president highlighting the

of five or six or seven. that's a big difference. >> reporter: several hotly contested governors' races, in florida, where andrew gillum is clashes with republican ron did he santos and in georgia where sta stacey abrams is hoping to become the governors first african american governor. she's battling brian kemp who shared the stage sunday, with president trump. the number of early and absentee votes has gone up consistently over the years. but consider this -- this year, we've seen an extraordinary surge. more than 34 million americans have voted early or absentee. that's double the number from 2014. savannah and hoda? >> peter, thank you. let's focus more on the 11th hour push to get voters to the polls. how effective are the messages from republicans and democrats? nbc's morgan radford is in st. louis with that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is not a blue wave or a red wave, this is a green wave. this has turned out to be one of the most expensive midterm cycles in history.

here in missouri, we've seen the tightest senate race and they've spent $94 million. but are all of the ads working will they encourage people to go to the polls or will they turn them off? it's a sprint to the finish line, as candidates across the country make their final pitches about what's at stake, bombarding voters with r robo calls, texts, social media ads and tv commercials. >> i approve this message. >> reporter: a staggering $1.5 billion alone has been spent on political tv ads since the start of october. republicans taking a page from the president's playbook. >> democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens. >> reporter: targeting liberals and stoking immigration fears. >> the caravan is full of gang members and criminals. >> reporter: democrats attacking the president's leadership and focusing on health care.

>> i believe that health care should be a right, not a privilege. >> reporter: in georgia, the race for governor between stacey abrams and republican brian kemp, taking a racist turn after a fake robocall surfaced on friday. >> this is the magical nigra, oprah winfrey. asking you to make my fellow nigra, stacey abrams the governor of georgia. >> reporter: the abrams campaign calling the robocalls a violent way to sway voters. kemp calling the robocall vile and absolutely disgusting. here in missouri, the voters saying the messaging around one of the tightest races of the country isn't working. >> josh hawley, he's turned his back on americans. >> after you see so many, you're desensitized to what the real issues ought to be. >> reporter: are the ads

changing anything for you? are they reaching you? >> they're not changing a thing. >> too many ads. you can't make a decision because they're throwing stones. negative ads. >> reporter: when you say you're tired of the ads have any of the ads been useful? >> no. >> reporter: none? >> none. >> reporter: as voter fatigue sets in, both sides hoping their strategy wins out. the missouri senate race has seen the second-most ad spending across the country, second to florida. across the country, we're seeing double the dollars from what we saw in 2014. hoda, savannah? >> morgan, thank you. we have fresh poll numbers from missouri in a minute. nbc's chuck todd is here, as is kasie hunt, who covers the hill for us. >> this does not seem like a midterm at all. the voter turn out is extraordinary, the amount of money spent on adds, this is feeling more and more like a general election. and president trump said vote as if i'm on the ballot. >> we're seeing evidence that it's there. this is a many any presidential

election. the early vote numbers that we've been talking about, i think we may cross 100 million total votes. it's only in the '96 and 2000 presidential elections that we crossed the 100 million mark in presidential elections. it's that big a deal. when you have a turnout like this, it makes polls -- it's going to make pollsters look ridiculous. not because they don't do a good job, but you cannot accommodate for all of the new voters in any way. >> nobody knows who exactly is showing up. that makes the job of pollsters difficult. >> absolutely. >> here's what's at stake. obviously, control of congress. in particular, democrats really feel, kasie, they have a chance to take back control of the house. that's the so-called blue wave. what are you hearing from your sources? >> that's going to be the big story on election night. the reality is -- my sources are looking at a lot of the same information chuck is looking at. they're doing their own looks inside their campaigns. the sources i'm talking to, by and large, they believe democrats will take back the house. the question is by how many

seats? are they just going to have the narrow of a majority or is it going to sweep through? it goes to a question of who actually comes out to the polls. >> we're dogging the polls a little bit. we have some numbers. we have missouri and florida, two tight races. in missouri, claire mccaskill, the incumbent. she's been behind in a lot of the polling. here's what we show this morning, she's ahead. >> we have her ahead. and this comports to what we're hearing on the ground there's been a movement towards her. this is the first poll i've seen in a while that's had her ahead. and it's surprising a lot of people that she's ahead. but it's not surprising this thing tightened. the republican candidate unexpectedly canceled on us on "meet the press." >> chuck is saying don't cancel "meet the press" or your poll numbers will go down. >> i'm not putting a connection. they felt as if they had some tough coverage in the last week. something is happening there. one thing about our pollsters, the way they do their likely voter model, they may have a way

of capturing new voters. than more traditional likely voter models. if something has changed quickly, you're likely to see in our poll. >> we have florida, too. a big one, the governors' race and the senate race there. in that one, kasie, the democrats are ahead in our latest poll. >> really remarkable. not what we expected to see when we started covering this. being from florida, chuck knows, the excitement among democrats for andrew gillum is off the charts. that's helping carry other democrats running. >> i had a democratic strategist so cocky about florida on behalf of democrats, that person thinks he's going to make the 9:00 p.m. tipoff of florida/florida state basketball. he thinks we'll be able to call the race on tuesday night by the

time florida/florida state tips basketball game. i said, buddy, it's florida. as someone who has taken months to call florida, i wouldn't be so cocky. that's how confident democrats feel in florida. >> it will be an interesting night. we will see -- as you say there's three issues in this election, immigration, health care and the president. on the midterms and the mood of voters ahead. stay with nbc news because it's going to be a long night for us. the results roll in tomorrow night. we'll start at 8:00 p.m., 7:00 central. meantime, the nation is mourning the death of an american soldier who was killed while serving in afghanistan. a proud father of seven and the mayor of north ogden, utah. miguel almaguer has our story. >> reporter: major taylor was serving his fourth tour of duty when he was killed by an afghan soldier, an apparent inside attack that left one other american seriously wounded. today, taylor's family, friends

and fellow soldiers are devastated. >> i love being the mayor. >> reporter: major brent taylor was not just a military man and a local town mayor. at 39 years old, he was also a husband, a son and a father, who leaves behind seven young chi , children, a brother, too, one of six. all members of the army national guard who signed up to serve after 9/11. >> brent typified the soldier that serves in his community as well as felt this call to wear a uniform and serve where the nation needed him to go. >> reporter: he was first deployed to iraq earning a purple heart and bronze star. but his family says he didn't hesitate when asked to serve again. >> i will be going to afghanistan. there's three great loyalties that guide my life and everything in it -- god, family and country. >> reporter: his latest assignment, training afghan ka

man commandos in kabul. the guy that shot him a part of the afghan defense and security forces was immediately killed by fellow soldiers. >> his is a deep loss. it's a little bitter because he's there helping the people of afghanistan and this is an afghani that killed him. >> reporter: family members say taylor and his wife, jenny, knew what they signed up for. >> she said, there's heartache but not regret. >> reporter: major taylor posted this message on facebook one week before his death. it was beautiful to see 4 million afghan men and women brave attacks to vote, and encouraging his countrymen to do the same. i hope everyone back home exercises their precious right to vote. and ending his final post writing, united we stand, divided we fall, god bless

america. his brother-in-law in a phone interview, saying he told taylor's children. >> he's one of the most honorable men that i met. you need to know that your father is a hero. >> reporter: major taylor's remains are being transported back to the u.s., arriving at dover air force base before a final return home to his family in utah. guys, back to you. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. craig joins us now. another story we're working on. >> good morning to you. multiple investigations are under way after a deadly helicopter crash in texas that claimed the lives of a newlywed couple and the pilot. nbc's kristen dahlgren is here with more on that. >> reporter: yeah, so tragic. the couple was being whisked away from the site of their dream wedding at the time of the crash. and this morning, officials are determined to figure out what went wrong. >> reporter: just hours after walking down the aisle and saying their i dos, a couple of

young newlyweds were killed in a tragic helicopter crash. the family and friends just hours earlier, celebrating their wedding, stunned. the couple left the reception and boarded the helicopter, as guests cheered them on. the chopper ride was supposed to whisk them off, possibly to begin their honeymoon. but sources say it crashed a few miles away, killing the couple and the pilot. >> there's no survivors at the time. >> reporter: the accident occurred in uvalde, texas. it went down after it hit the side of the hill. a bell b206 helicopter crashed in a remote area. ntsb investigators will try to determine the exact cause. the happy couple tie d the knot saturday night. their big day as husband and wife taking place at byler's

family rav family ranch, where the bride serenaded the groom. the couple met in 2016 and byler proposed a year later. posting this picture of themselves inside a helicopter. the bride-to-be celebrating her engagement news, i honestly cannot truly express how blessed we are. both were college seniors attending sam houston state university together, where they majored in agriculture studies and were part of the rodeo team. the school student paper sharing the news of the couple's untimely passing, tweeting, it is with sadness we announce the passing of two bearcats. one friend saying, these two spent their last day on this earth celebrating with their most cherished loved ones. i believe it truly was the best day of their lives. and ntsb investigators are expected to release more information about that crash

in this. one of the male victims was pronounced dead on the scene. the two other victims the male and the female were transported to a hospital. we know that people were inside at the time of the shooting. the motive of the shooting is unclear. wez will we will be on scene for the next several hours. let's look at the across the benicia bridge. three left lanes currently blocked by a crash holding steady with the slower drive out of hercules and a slow drive southbound 88 from hayward and

caravan after caravan of illegal immigrants to pour into our country. i don't think so. >> they're telling us that the single-most grave threat to america is a bunch of poor, impoveri impoverished, hungry refugees 1,000 miles away. >> president obama leading the charge for democrats, sharpening his rhetoric against president trump. more than 31 million people have already cast ballots in early voting. new information on that lion air jet that crashed off of indonesia a week ago. transportation officials indicated that the plane experienced an air speed indicator problem, which gauges how fast the plane is flying. they have a similar problem on each of the four flights, including the one that crashed after takeoff last monday.

it's not clear if this is a mechanical or a maintenance issue. a falcon enduring a frank gone wrong is feeling some vast improvement. no one had successfully taken the air force academy falcon until now. two west point cadets took two of the girds and put sweaters over them. when they were returned, one of the wings was bloodied. she was expected to make a full recovery. army officials apologized and promised an investigation. there's a possible development in the high-stakes competition for amazon's second headquarters. some clues are pointing to northern virginia, right across the river from washington, d.c. tom costello joins us from crystal city. tom, this would be a big deal. >> reporter: big deal, indeed. to give you an idea of where we

are, crystal city is on the other side of reagan airport. and then, washington, d.c. is ten minutes away. am sazon amazon's hq2 means billions of jobs and economic activity. but there's speculation it could be coming here. this morning, the giant of the internet may be close to announcing one of the most highly anticipated business decisions in decades. which city will land its hq2? >> "the washington post" is reporting that amazon is holding advanced discussions to move to our area. >> reporter: on the table, 50,000 jobs and billions of dollars in economic impact, potentially for crystal city, virginia. back in january, amazon announced the 20 cities in the running. among them, l.a., denver, d.c., northern virginia and new york. all trying to outdo each other

by offering massive tax incentives. but ceo jeff bezos, the world's richest man, has kept mum. >> hopefully the decision will be made after gathering and studying a lot of data. >> reporter: now, "the washington post," that bezos owns, notes in a conversations with virginia are more details than other cities in the running. and buildings have been pulled for leasing from amazon. crystal city is a subway ride from downtown d.c. access to three airports and east coast ports. >> a great location. a lot of people, different cultures, different races, different anything. >> reporter: but the area is populated and congested. >> whether the tax breaks are worth it. >> reporter: still, virginia's governor is confident. >> we're in a good position with the way we train our workforce, the talent we have in northern

virginia and the greater washington area. >> reporter: after "the washington post" posted the development, an amazon exec said it was premature. memo to the genius that leaked the decision. you're not doing crystal city any favors. there's optimism in northern virginia. >> i think it's great. great for the community, jobs, good thing. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to amazon for comment. it has no comment and it's not yet ready to make any announcements. >> does this close the door on the other cities that you mentioned there? is this a done deal? >> reporter: it doesn't appear to, "the washington post," again, owned by bezos, says there could be conversations under way with other cities. it's reporting that physicals here in crystal city have been having conversations about how they're going to make the

breaking news .. and the search for a good morning. 8:26, i'm marcus washington. breaking news to tell you about, the search for a gunman who shot three people at a detox center, killing one of them. pete suratos is live near the scene in san rafael. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. i checked in with the marin county sheriff's department. they say the suspect is still on the loose. there's no immediate threat to the area. smith ranch road in front of the helen vine detox center following this morning's deadly shooting, as far as information on the shooting, they got a call roughly around 1:30 a.m. to a shooting at the center with shots being fired at staff members. now the deputies showed up and found three victims all

a bunch of phones and dropping them on purpose to see how strong they are. apple claims the new xs models are made with the most durable glass ever in a smartphone. now, some customers already blasting the phones. one user tweeting, have the phone less than 24 hours, dropped it from less than 3 feet, already cracked. day one of having my iphone xs, dropped it and broke the whole screen. what does it take for the phones to break? let's try it out for ourselves. i have two of the new model iphones. this one doesn't have a case because we want to see how strong the glass is by itself. this one does have a case on it because we know many of you have cases and we're going to try that, too. we're going to go without the case first. we have multiple cameras rolling on this and of course, i have the iphone camera rolling right

there. i'm going to take it out of my pocket and drop it because that's how you would do it. see? not cracked. the screen is all-good. see it again. same area. whoops. and again, falling at random angles. the screen is still not cracked. the screen is fine. try it again. sometimes landing right on the screen. the screen is still intact. until drop number 11. >> now we have it. now, we have a big crack going right through here and also some shattering on the side of the screen right over here. that ain't bad. if you're dropping your phone that often, that's kind of on you. now, let's try it with the case. >> we have a regular silicone case on here, a standard version. going to start dropping it, out of my pocket. the screen is fine. this time around -- fall after fall, the phone
