this early edition of "today in the bay." i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we went on at 4:00 a.m. to start this coverage. 13 people are dead, including the sheriff's deputy and the gunman. this unfolded around 11:20 last night when that suspect open fire inside that crowded club in thousand oaks. police say that several hundred people there were inside that venue at the time. >> i have nothing to lead me to believe or the fbi that there is any terrorism link here, but we will certainly look at that option. >> borderline bar & grill is a western themed establishment, known to regularly host swing dancing nights. according to its instagram page, they were hosting a college country night when that shooting happened. if you're not aware of where thousand oaks is. it's located about 40 miles west of los angeles in ventura county. thousand oaks recently ranked as one of the country's safest

cities. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez tracking all of that for us. >> this was so shocking that even the sheriff had a hard time keeping his composure as he talked about what happened last night. young people were running away from the bar, the ones who could get out, running into the darkness as law enforcement was still working to get into that bar in thousand oaks. some of the people inside the bar say this was just a regular wednesday night when that gunman walked in and started shooting almost as soon as he set foot inside the bar. pepperdine university put out a statement, they know some of their students were there when the bullets were flying. >> our friends got the bar stools and they started slamming them against the window so we could get out. >> we just tried to take cover. >> i mean, now we just sit and wait and kind of play -- just waited until the sheriffs came out.

>> hoping to get out and look for our friends. >> why would anyone do this to kids? >> that young man says kids because the crowd is a pretty young crowd. he says between 18 and 21 there on a wednesday night. you see the fbi working alongside the sheriff there at the scene and with the young people who survived, standing in shock outside the bar. as we have reported, a sheriff's deputy who rushed into that bar was killed along with 11 young people, along with the gunman. we don't know if the gunman died, whether he turned the weapon on himself or if he was killed in crossfire with law enforcement. ventura county sheriff's department is providing updates as they have a lot of agencies working with them, along with the fbi and atf on scene. i'll be back with you again in a half an hour. >> thank you. we know a little more about the sheriff's sergeant who was killed. his name is ron helus, a 29-year veteran of the ventura county sheriff's department. he was actually planning to

retire as early as next year. here's what the ventura county sheriff had to say a short time ago. >> he was totally committed. he gave his all. tonight as i told his wife, he died a hero because he went -- he went in to save lives, to save other people. >> so sad. >> as you can imagine, this is a tough time for everyone involved, including a lot of those families wondering where their loved ones are. the red cross is working to set up a reunification center tore friends and family of the victims. they can also call an emergency hot line. that number is 800-465-6650 in case you have someone in that area. you can find this information on our website, nbcbayarea.com. >> we, of course, will continue to monitor the situation in thousand oaks, bring you the latest information as soon as we get anything new. we'll have multiple reports

throughout this morning's edition of "today in the bay." stay with us. right now at 4:33, we want to get a check of the forecast in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall, you said a windy start to the morning. >> yes. we begin with a red flag warning. that means a fire danger in elevations above 1,000 feet. it's been gusty there already and we may see gusts topping 60 miles an hour for any of these areas shaded in red. most of the populated areas and in the valleys, we won't see wind speeds that strong but be mindful that if you are in the hills, you have to be careful out there. as we start out, you're getting out the door, heading to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, it will be in the low 50s. another really nice day as we head into the upper 60s by noon. our high temperatures in oakland reached 75 degrees. it will be up to 78 in livermore and 81 in ukiah. my you said the flares are out

in berkeley? >> they've been laid out. that's westbound getting to the bay bridge. this is eastbound. where it says eastshore freeway, there is actually the silhouette of university overcrossing, just to get you located. you see a vehicle moved over to the right shoulder. folks are able to easily exit. you have about 50 yards to get over to the right side. it comes up quickly as you're at freeway speeds and that's the speeds you're taking. the earlier slowdown we saw, eastbound 80 approaching university, there was a traffic break. it's all cleared up as you saw from that live camera. that slow lane is blocked. no word when they'll clear that. it doesn't present a problem for the commute out of coco county and north bay toward the maze. good news over here, all lanes clear north 101. disabled vehicles southbound 880

police say that several hundred people were inside. witnesses say they heard gunshots and even saw smoke bombs go off. many of those people ran for safety. >> it was all very quick, what happened. so, all i saw was once, you know, the shots rang out and we were heading under the stools, there was a little smoke bomb. my friend actually saw it because i was under the stools with her. and that she saw the smoke bomb, like, start to go off. we just heard everyone say, run. >> this all happened at borderline bar & grill. they were hosting a college country night when that shooting happened. >> we have live pictures to show you right now of the scene. obviously, the investigation is going to go on for quite some time. the gunman has not yet been identified. we'll, of course, continue to follow this breaking news all morning. it's really difficult news to wake up to especially. >> such a sad story. >> yeah, yet another mass shooting. it is quarter to 5:00 right

now. we want to get a look at weather and traffic together. we know you have that morning commute. i noticed it was windy out there this morning. >> it's going to be windy. that's the reason why the red flag warning was issued. we see we'll continue throughout tomorrow morning, so it's still going to be gusty. this is all as the winds pick up out of the north and east, flowing over the hills and actually warms up and dries out as it descends down those hills. that's what we'll have to deal with, some very low humidity this morning and also throughout the day. so, right now the humidity is at about 18%. very low as you make your way especially farther inland. as we go into the afternoon, the humidity gets even lower. ukiah will see humidity levels dropping down to 7% and 8% around clear lake. when you have humidity that low and winds just rushing over those hills, any fires could spread relatively quickly as we go throughout the day. so, just be mindful of that as

we step out the door in walnut creek. it will be at about 50 degrees. then at about 60 degrees at 9:00. overall, it will be a nice but breezy day as you head out the door heading to diridon station in san jose. upper 40s. bundle up. it will only be about 47 degrees. overall it will be a good hair day. don't brush too much, you might have static with humidity levels starting out at 22% and expected to drop throughout the day. our high temperature in the south bay reaching 75 in cupertino and 80 in morgan hill. these temperatures are well above normal. we should only be in the upper 60s. we're up to 82 today in danville. we'll see mid-70s for san mateo, san francisco. up to 75 degrees in the mission district. the north bay reaching 81 in novato as well as ukiah.

throughout the weekend, upper 70s for our high. san francisco in the 70s for the next couple of days and veterans' day is looking pleasant with upper 60s. we'll see more 60s next week. mike, you have an update on that crash in berkeley? >> i do. we'll take you out to the east shore freeway. the crash had the lane blocked. the right lane getting -- i did see the cars clear from the roadway and the flares were the issue as folks were traveling away from the bay bridge. flae flares were there but no flashing lights for vehicles. as far as i can tell, you can travel through. don't worry about the flares but be careful for the other drivers. light traffic flow. still sudden lane changes could be an issue. coco county getting into the walnut creek interchange, the

maze, sdandisabled vehicle at s 880. everything else looks standard. 4:48. other news. take a look at what happened at sun valley mall in concord. the shops were flooded. a shopper posting this snapchat video of water seeping into the concourse. a mall spokesperson says a water line broke causing a pool of dirty water to cover much of the low level floor. maintenance work overnight to try to fix that problem. the mall says they hope to reopen this morning. well, the ship is sailing and boat squatters in sass leus. sausalito police say the number of boats parked offshore is skyrocketing and many are in bad shape. so, officers put out flyers warning owners to move it or lose it. boat owners say they dock offshore to avoid high rent in

medical center. that's where the victims of the mass shooting were taken. it happened in a popular bar and grill in ventura county, thousand oaks. 13 people have died including the gunman and a sheriff's deputy. new information as well this morning, we're understanding that sheriff's deputy that went in along with a highway patrol officer responding to the shots that had been fired, they entered the building and the sheriff's deputy was struck multiple times with gunfire and the other officer attempted to drag him out of the line of fire. sadly, he did not survive. he was set to retire. 29-year veteran with the ventura county sheriff's department. >> very sad. >> they're still trying to identify the gunman as well. >> a lot of family members just waiting to find out if their loved ones are victims in this situation or if they made it out all right. we'll continue to follow this story coming out of thousand oaks for you this morning. 4:54 right now.

nbc bay area responds to a sacramento man who says the fine art he bought on vacation turns out to be worthless. but he diplomat know it for more than a decade. that's when he turned to chris' team for help. >> gary briggs recently tried to sell two etchinges said to be by rembrandt. he bought them aboard a cruise ship in 2006. he says he paid about $7,000 with them and came with several pages of documentation, including this appraisal from park west, which is the auctioneer. but when he went to sell those recently, he says several appraisers told him they are not genuine rembrandts. in fact, they have no market valley. gary told park west, the auctioneer, he want his money back. he says they refused. so, he turned to us. we contacted park west. their attorney initially told us that it strongly disputed the
