6:01 am
the peninsula. >> san mateo, 101-92, the crash reported here but it looks like it may be clearing quickly to the shoulder. in the last couple of seconds got word of a new crash near the castro valley "y." we'll track both sides of the san mateo bridge. as we move the map up, we see the slower drive, an earlier crash highway 4 at railroad is on the shoulder. we have the backup and slowing. a motorcycle involved here so the rider getting assistance. that's always a distraction. more build through baypoint and through concord. walnut creek interchange, a new crash may be reported as well. upper east shore down to the bay bridge and the backup at the toll plaza, about 20 minutes. that's not bad through richmond and berkeley. san rafael picking up the volume just a tad. back over to you. now back to that breaking news out of southern california. if you're just waking up, here is what we're learning at this hour. this is a mass shooting.
6:02 am
13 people are dead including a sheriff's deputy and the gunman. up to 12 others are injured. this all unfolded around 11:20 last night. this is when the suspect open fire inside a crowded bar in thousand oaks. this is 40 miles west of l.a. police say that several hundred people were inside that bar. this is the borderline bar & grill at the time of the shooting. that bar was hosting a college country night when that shooting happened. there's a lot of new information coming in minute by minute. let's take a look at where the shooting happened. in thousand oaks, as you mentioned, marcus, about 40 miles west of los angeles. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking it for us. anything new? >> we know law enforcement is trying to use the fingerprints taken off that gunman's dead body ed to try to identify him as he walked into that borderline bar & grill with the gun and smoke bombs. he didn't have any i.d. on him, so they're also looking at any tattoos on his body to see if that can indicate who he might
6:03 am
be. meanwhile, there were folks who made it out of that bar just in the nick of time with their lives. one of them captured the gunfire. the ventura county sheriff's department says that inside the bar is a horrific scene with blood everywhere. the shooting was first reported around 11:20 last night. people inside say it was just a regular wednesday night at the country bar when the gunman walked in and started shooting. there were hundreds had of people inside at the time. many of them college students. >> i'm pretty sure i saw him. i'll never get that picture out of my head. . we dropped and we heard the gunshots. >> our friends got the bar stools and started slimming them against the windows so we could get out. >> we sat there and wait and
6:04 am
just sat there waiting in until the sheriffs came out. >> hoping we could get out, looking for all of our friends. >> you see the fbi working alongside the ventura sheriff there at the scene with young people who survived that attack, standing in shock outside the bar. as we have reported, a sheriff's deputy who rushed into the bar died alongside those 11 young people -- rather, he died at the hospital. as for the gunman, we know he is dead this morning. we don't know whether or not this was a self-inflicted wound. we know that he is a white man, an adult. the ventura sheriff's department says they did not find an automatic weapon. they found a handgun at the scene and at this point there does not seem to be any link to terrorism. the ventura county sheriff is working with several different agencies to try to identify that gunman, also try to figure out what that gunman's motive might have been. at the same time they're planning to have a procession coming up in about three hours to get that sheriff's deputy
6:05 am
from the hospital to where his family is and can have visitation there. in the technical operation center, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> just as you were speaking, we have new information as well. now 22 people confirmed to be in the hospital as a result of that mass shooting in ventura county. still 12 were killed, including the gunman making it 13. here's a little more background on that bar and grill in the city of thousand oaks, borderline bar & grill. it's a western-themed bar known to regularly host country, salsa, a lot of swing dancing nights. it was hosting a college country night when that shooting occurred. thousand oaks was ranked the third safest city in the united states this year, according to data analysis website. a lot of families are wondering where their loved ones are. the red cross is working to set up a reunification center for
6:06 am
friends and families members of those victims. they also have an emergency hot line. that number is 800-465-6650. you can actually find information on our website as well at nbcbayarea.com. 6:06. now to our other top stories in the bay area. we're talking about a microclimate weather alert. >> a combination of high winds and low humidity setting up really dangerous fire threat to bay area foothills. kari has been talking about the red flag warning all morning long. "today in the bay's" rob redell joins us from contra costa county with a heads up and warning from pg&e. >> reporter: good morning to you. also we're getting a sense of how contra costa county is dealing with this potential wildfire danger. they've already got regular staffing at their fire stations. they've already put a dozer crew on standby and in two hours they'll be deploying, calling up task force 2025. this is a task force that involves five engines and 15
6:07 am
firefighters who will be deploying to five different fire stations at 8:00 this morning throughout the county. now, they will be on standby in case a wildfire ignites. you might be thinking, how is that possible? it's november. it's obviously well into the fall here. we haven't had rain in a long time. the brush is dry. humidity levels are low. we've had these gusty winds that are forecast for the next 24 hours. we've got -- we're starting to see some right now. that's why the national weather service has issued red flag warning for coco county, alameda and santa clara counties and nine more counties in the north bay, including napa and sonoma. pg&e said they are keeping an eye on napa and lake counties between now and 10:00 a.m. to see if they need to shut the power off for customers there. the concern being the winds could bring down power lines and
6:08 am
spark a wildfire. pg&e held a town hall in calistoga to alleviate customers' concerns. last month, pg&e down in that town for 36 hours because of the concerns of a wildfire like we saw last year in napa and sonoma. calistoga businesses lost a lot of money in that outage. pg&e said they'll try to keep outages to 12 hours instead of 36. so for the next four hours pg&e is keeping an eye on conditions in napa and lake counties. if they see fit, they might shut down power for some customers. reporting live in san ramone, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. today thousands of proce proceedeprocee protesters are expected to speak out about the removal of jeff sessions. a group of activists started last night. they are calling for the removal of president trump and vice president pence. they fear the move will halt the investigation. >> i think crushing the mueller investigation, which is clearly

6:11 am
problems. looks like it's out of the roadway. a little build for that portion of coco county and the metering lights at bay bridge. all morning long we've been following that breaking news out of southern california in thousand oaks. a deadly mass shooting during a college night at a bar. >> he died a hero because he went -- he went in to save lives. >> we're learning more about a deputy killed. one of 12 victims shot to death overnight in thousand oaks. still ahead this hour, new reaction just coming in from people who were inside that bar and managed to escape and what investigators are looking for right now. >> we'll continue to watch that, plus a new boss at tesla. are you putting off your holiday travel? you're not alone. the reason experts say people are procrastinating this season. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:18 am
we are, though, dealing with some gusty winds and a high fire danger. it will be nice to see some rain, but we don't see any of that in the forecast. now red flag warning. that means a high fire danger for our hills. that includes now the santa cruz mountains and parts of the east bay hills and the north bay mountains. elevations above 1,000 feet will have to deal with gusty winds and some very low humidity. in fact, look at how low the humidity goes after going through this afternoon. down to about 6% or 7% for parts of men den dedocino and lake co. we'll have to watch out for the possibility of spreading wildfires. if you have any flames or sparks that could move across those hills very quickly. so, be really careful out there. it's a cool start with santa rosa now at 39 degrees, but compare that to napa where those winds are gusting, temperatures have not dropped down as cool. we're at 55 degrees there. and it's 50 in livermore and 56 in san jose. as we head down to los gatos,
