4:02 am
>> 2465. >> 2465 east hillcrest. >> yes, right at the fire. >> reporter: and your home was already burning when you woke up. >> yes. >> reporter: oh, i'm so sorry for you. you've lived here for so many years, but have you ever seen anything like this? >> 30 years. >> reporter: 30 years. what now? what are you going to do? >> i don't know what is next. we have to find out. fire insurance. >> reporter: you have fire insurance. >> we have it and we have to wait. >> reporter: just wait. thank you so much for talking to us. i want to -- just sit tight, take a deep breath. i want to make sure you're okay. his phone is ringing right now. thank you, sir, and going to be just fine. looking down east hillcrest, you can see a small army of arrivin now. you have fire on both sides of this roadway. we were downman who said earlie
4:03 am
his -- hold on, rene i'll grab this. bear with us, if you will, who said his camper had been burned, completely destroyed. he was concerned about his home, which is also on east hillcrest. we've been here for about an hour or so. right now, it appears they have reopened the street, so the threat is somewhat over, but look at the smoke that is crossing that roadway, and obscuring all kinds of visibility for anyone trying to drive through. you have the first responders up ahead, you can see their lights flashing and then you have some of the residents coming up behihend. station, this is incredible. you heard the gentleman just talk to us saying t he was in h sleeping. he did not realize the fire was as bad as it was. he did not realize that most of his neighbors had evacuated, and he barely made it
4:04 am
out of his home. grabbed his dog, t.j., and took off. folks, i'll try to get updated information, talk to this gentleman a little more. listen to the transformers, whatever, the explosions we're hearing. i'll pause one more time and see if we can hear them so that you can understand exactly what the residents are leaving and the firefighters are coming to. >> all right, toni, incredible coverage. hopefully that man, we feel for him, can getfresh air and water and get out of there, get someplace safe like an evacuation center. it's just after 4:00 officially "today in l.a." you're joining us with the woolsey wildfire. here is what we know right now. >> more than 75,000 evacuation orders in l.a. andng two counties including thed to village as well within the last 30,000 homesry evacuations
4:05 am
being threatened, and the flames are burning toward the 101 freeway along kanaan road. 20 homes have burned, kathy, possibly more. >> news chopper 4 bravo was over the flames. we're jumping from home to home, we've seen the explosions, the huge flames. at least 8,000 acres burned, but we know now it's much, much more. you can always check out the bottom of your screen to see evacuation orders. we're running those continuously. we have centers, evacuation centers, school closures for today.s the fire fight and how they're going to get these flames under control. the problem has been the winds, and for that, we want to bring in meteorologist shawna me d how it concerns the fire die down. first alert radar network tracking the fire. >> and you see the fire
4:06 am
burning in ventura and l.a. counties. 8,000 acres burning, several thousand homes evacuated. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the situation there and also we have a fire burning north of us, and the winds aren't helping the situation at all. >> not at all. the winds have been fanning these flames and we still have the red flag warning in effect that continues through the next three hours at least. they may extend that, but we are waking up and looking out the window and seeing a lot of smoke this morning, and we do have a advisory in effect especially for the north bay, east bay, and the peninsula, where air quality will be unhealthy today, and we can already see and smell that. it's a nauseating smoke smell we have lingering over the bay area thising. the south bay will still have the moderate air quality, and so you d time mask, make sure you stay hydrated and do not leave your pets outside. we also are getting a location of where the camp fire is burning, just east of chico.
4:07 am
it's picked up on our radar as well. smoke being pushed across the bay area, with our northeasterly wind, and some very low humidity this morning. we'll continue to track that as well. marcus? >> thank you, kari. as kari was just talking about the fire up there, butte county, the small town of paradise is getting wiped out, including the hospital, the church, and schools. just take a look at these flames right here, hundreds of those homes have burned and thousands of people are moving out. just try to get out of the way. we saw many of these people as through those flames, as they tried to escape and get to safety. that monster slowing down. this all started 6:30 yesterday morning east of and it triggering mass evacuations, and really terrifying escapes for many people living in that area. just look flames there. so far at least 20,000 acres have burned. it's estimated that 15,000 structures are also being
4:08 am
threatened at this hour. we're going to continue to follow both of those fires, the ventura, l.a. county fire as well as the beautifiutte fire. you right now.
4:09 am
4:10 am
we're on early on "today in the bay" to cover a special edition of two wildfires burning to the outh ous. right now this is ventura county, southern california, where the woolsey fire is burning. currently 8,000 acres, take a
4:11 am
look at this, homes on fire, as many people had to evacuate their homes, really driving through those flames as they tried to get to safety, but then this, you see right there, homes, memories, their lives going up in flames. many firefighters working to get this all under control. this is near thousand oaks. the situation there yesterday, but now this, plagued with a burning fire.as i said, 8,000 a. 75,000 evacuated, 30,000 of those homes in threat of just being destroyed by those flames. we are covering tt lifornia. also in northern california, just north of us, i should say, here in the bay area the butte county fire that, small town of paradise there pretty much wiped out from those flames. we're talking about the hospital there, the church, as well as those schools, and you can see right here, what firefighters are dealing with, those heavy intense flames, pretty much taking that town, wiping it out. hundreds of those homes have
4:12 am
already burned, thousands of people having to rush from their homes to try to get to safety, as those flames, those intense flames burned so much of the area that they call home. that monster fire showing no sign of slowing down. this fire, the butte county fire started, this started at 6:30 yesterday morning. this is east of chico, and really exploded, triggering massive evacuations, as i said, terrifying the people there, as they have to rush from their homes. so far, at least 20,000 acres have burned. this is the camp fire thatthere. estimate 15,00d 15,000 structur threatened, reminiscent of what we saw in the bay area as the north bay fires burned, destroying so much of that area and the places people call home. we'll continue to follow this on this special edition of "today in the bay." we'll be right back after the break. toss to break. our sister station - knbc is on air right now.
4:13 am
4:14 am
4:15 am
>> welcome back to this sal4:16s we continue to cover mass sif fires burning to the north and south of us. in southern california, the woolsey fire burning 8,000 acres there. let's listen to knbc, our sister
4:16 am
stations. >> inconvenient. forgot my medications, forgot all of the things i need to get in an emergency like this comes up, so i didn't think. >> reporter: it's really not something you'd necessarily expect. >> they pound on your door saying you got to leave, you got to go. grab your things. i didn't think about grabbing my meds. >> reporter: you grabbed the dog, obviously. >> i grabbed my dog. >> reporter: that was it? >> that was it, buddy. >> reporter: the most important things. thanks, arthur. good luck to you. i know you got a blanket with you, it's kind of chilly out here. you're waiting on somebody to bring you some stuff. >> hopefully, yeah. hopefully i get a ride and get somewhere comfortable. >> reporter: thanks, arthur. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> reporter: good luck to you. we've seen quite a few people here, probably in the hundreds inside, an area set up with cots. they have an area, i don't know if you can see through the window, folks are just actually playing pool, believe it or not, using that area to kind of relax a little bit. there's chairs inside the main lobby. they're registering people as they come in, so they know exactly where you're coming
4:17 am
from. that hepts tlps the fire depart so they know what areas are clear and what perhaps still has people waiting in their homes. the place here is so packed, there's no place to park. people are trying to find creative ways to park their cars, but we've also noticed not only are people just walking their dogs, some have chosen to stay in their cars, some have chose on it leave the cars, us eier t busmorning folks. we are told when they open this up around midnight, the line was almost around the block and quickly filled up and starting to ask people to look for different shelters because of that, and again, the issue with the dogs, there are some dogs inside, we can hear them wimp r whimpering, trying to figure out what they can do because there's a lot of people showing one animals and people with different stories about the evacuati evacuations. we'll keep you updated how things progress here and let you know if anything changes. >> thank you for that, john. one thing, where john's location
4:18 am
is, to give you an idea of the scope of difficulty that people are dealing with i ttpaicular a reunification center for the borderline shooting yesterday. that's where family members were going, seeking any information about their loved ones, and then now, it has been transformed into this evacuation center, of the resources are being taxed in this area, kathy, and talking about moorpark, thousand oaks and simi hills, people are being taxed to the limit. >> we were talking about it yesterday, the convergence and two stories, those two big stories we were following, the shooting that happened, unfortunately, and then the fires that broke out, all impacting this one community, and you have to feel for these people in those places t has to be so disorienting, you're waking up in the middle of the night, and being told to leave your home, so they're trying to grab what they can, and that man
4:19 am
with the blanket, people with their dogs, and already that facility is already at its capacity. they're talking about having to find some other place for the people to go, or perhaps staying in their cars. we want to go back up to news chopper 4 bravo, we have josh cuzzo following this fire fight. you have shown us incredible flames this morning. josh? >> reporter: we've revisited oak place drive here and we cannot keep up with the spot fires. this house caught fire since my, since we last spoke, and now it has completely burned to the ground in a matter of minutes. you can see that right side there totally engulfed. we were filming the deck of that house and that deck has burned to the ground, it's just falling apart before our eyes, and you can see the center -- hold on for my radio here -- okay, so the center there totally burned out and working its way slowly
4:20 am
in the direction of the wind if you notice from right to left -- >> and right now, you're looking at the woolsey fire burning in southern california, ventura county there, 8,000 acres. we'll continue to follow this story. we'll be right back with more, after the break. california phones offers free specialized phones... like cordless phones. - ( phone ringines.g ) get details on this state program. visit right now or call during business hours.

4:23 am
is. kanaan has been one of the major roads they've been using and it looks like anothou kanaan in flames, so you can see it's affecting a lot of the neighborhoods along kanaan road here. i'll zoom out and showwing ome and some of the brush previously, could you see on the left some of the embers. i'll try to brighten it up to make it more apparent. kanaan on the left and oak place drive there, so we have the neighborhoods adjacent to oak place drive, you have the neighborhoods adjacent to kanaan road and we'll zoom out more, kanaan road intersects west lake boulevard in the middle left to right and that's another neighborhood that is connected to west lake boulevard affected by this. we're just going to zoom in -- go ahead. >> we were going to say our producer was saying to let you know this is thousand oaks area, but i'm glad you put west lake up, because west lake and kanaan give everybody a good idea of where we are. >> yes, so those major roads west lake and kanaan and we are showing the thousand oaks area,
4:24 am
but it's tough to say, it's so dark, we don't have the ability to see which specifically can show you the major cross streets and you can ex-strap plate and see what-- extrapolate what's happening. you can see a large response on one of those properties that is fully involved, and we'll zoom out again, try and just show you basically, look, off to the left there, you have a large, large we re talking about earlier in the broadcast, you guyed mentioned urbess road, and you can see that running right to left on the screen and a large amount of brush, a large amount of fire on that hill there. we'll continue to swing around here and zoom out just to put as many streets as we can in the largest amount of area we can just to show you where this is all happening, so look, you have a lot of fire in the center of your screen there, right off of
4:25 am
lang ranch parkway and west lake, so right off of west lake and lang ranch, a large amount of brush on that hill there panning uhm a little bit, you see conejo ridge, that hill fully involved on the bottom and looks like it burned its way to the top. you see the ridge engulfed there, and we'll zoom out again continuing. let me know if interject at any time here. i'm going to keep panning to the right and showing the area here, this is, these are the hills that continues that hill ridge there, sunset hills boulevard, you see there's houses right there, and they have not been able to cut power to those houses just yet, so you see the flames starting to work their way to those backyards on those houses, that are onse boulevard. willow street, morning ridge avenue, those houses right there, and look, there's a vehicle there. let's see if we can see that is possibly a fire vehicle or maybe just somebody evacuating. let's start to bump it up a little bit. we don't see any lights on it, so maybe you have to assume
4:26 am
they're driving away from the fire, just somebody evacuating there on sunset hills boulevard. so we're going to continue to pan to the right and show you more and more of the area affected here, so again, we're following this valley, it seems like the fire has already ripped through this valley, and this is right off of grass valley street, and then you see one of the major roads up then let's see, that's again in their backyard again, that top of the ridge there, they only have the down slope and a large, what looks like a large retainer wall, so hopefully that retainer wall can act as a barrier for them, and we'll zoom out and cover a couple more here. we have smoketree way and long canyon road on the far side of that, and again, all these homes right just showing you where these roads are, giving you a better idea of what neighborhoods are possibly affected. look at the flare-up on that ridge right there, and we'll zoom out, keep panning to the
4:27 am
right a little bit here, you have twisted oak drive on the top of your screen, rustic hills drive, and you see a lot of the hills there are involved, and it shows that rustic hills drive goes up into that ridge a little bit, but as you can see, it's absolute rosides, pretty much the hill is fully involved. you can see the fires onbott ane it, so the fire working its way down or across that hill. we'll zoom out and keep panning. it looks like right now we're showing you, let me pan back to the left to get a better idea. >> as we're joining our affiliate in southern california, knbc, you see the extent of the fire that is burning there. this is in southern california and ventura county. they're calling it the woolsey fire. 8,000 acres consumed so far. 30,000 homes are threatened, 75,000 people evacuated, many of them, sadly staying in some of the shelters there used yesterday for the shooting. >> absolutely, and the situation
4:28 am
is the wind, that's also playing a big factor there. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and kari, we have dangers here in our area as well. >> we do have, the camp fire that's farther to the north of the bay area, and still a red flag warning in effect. i'll have more on that and what to expect throughout the day, coming up next. destructive wild
4:29 am
overnight breaking news at 4:30, destructive wildfires exploding overnight across the state, from the north to the south, emergency evacuations, as flames
4:30 am
fueled by strong winds demolish homes. >> my home was across the street. i woke up, and my house was full of smoke, and i walked out of the house, and there was fire all the way around my very, very fast. >> our team monitoring updates minute by minute, as they come in. we'll give you the very latest. good morning to you. thanks so much for joinius
