we )re following breaking news: a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. lot of breaking news we're following this morning. three major fires burning across our state. in southern california, the entire city of malibu is being evacuated. that is in addition to the 75,000 other homes under evacuation orders in ventura and l.a. county. first is the woolsey fire, 8,000 acres burned there so far. there is a second fire burning in that area called the hill fire. in the northern part of the state in butte county, the entire town of paradise and the city of chico are under evacuation. hundreds of homes have burned, as well as schools and churches.

that fire is the one that's blowing smoke into the bay area, causing very poor air quality. santa rosa city schools, in fact, will be closed today due to the issue. take a look at you head out the door. you can smell the smoke. we check in with kari, it's concerning. >> it is very concerning. you want to limit your time outside, and we look at the temperatures, where we drop well below freezing in santa rosa, it is only 29 degrees, while 63 at half moon bay and 43 in san jose and we're also going to see a wide range in temperatures as we go throughout the afternoon, as the smoke lingers all across the bay area. let's get an update on the commute now from mike. >> locally we're doing all right. north 101 recovering from a crash, motorcycle involved there. no major injuries reported. scattered friday light commute, perhaps extra light at the san mateo bridge. earlier crash west 80 approaching appian way, the area

i just -- how do you do it? is it that you set it aside and you ignore it? or you get the adrenaline pumping? how are you able to perform at that level when you are actually struggling with pain of any kind? >> well, for both of the situations, i feel like adrenaline definitely helped. on the other hand, i tried to set it aside. but then again, it almost becomes normalized after the couple weeks of training that we had. i feel like i started to get used to the pain and learned how to, like, just tune it out. >> it's funny. at the worlds, you called this a rough performance. the rest of us called it amazing. anyway, when you feel you are having not your favorite day, how do you psych yourself out of that? i'm the kind of person, if i make a mistake, i keep making mistakes i can't pull back. how do you get your head in the right space? >> yeah. it wasn't easy. and it was definitely hard and going into those events, i was

like, how am i going to mess up again? i really tried to turn the page and be like, you have to rely on training here and get up there and do your best performance. it's been a while since i've been on the big stage. i think that's what shook me a little bit. hopefully i get better. and next worlds, it will be smoother. >> smoother. but you did medal in every category. what goals do you set for yourself now, simone? you are kind of shattering every record you can shatter. >> yes. i want to be more consistent on those events and put up better scores for myself and for the team. those weren't my best performances. so, i was a little disappointed. >> you know, one of the things, simone, that we've been following kind of in the news here, is that the u.s. olympic committee decided to strip all of the power away from usa gymnastics. you and aly are sort of faces of gymnastics. do you figure, in your mind, how

>> cuties. >> halloween. >> i know. >> that's a good one. welcome back, everybody. it's a friday morning. got that friday feeling. cannot wait to get outside and say hello to some of the great folks out there. let's start with the news. it's 8:00. we begin with this week's deadly shooting rampage inside a california country bar. miguel almaguer has more about the shooter's path and mental elt issues. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. many remembering the 12 lives lost as investigators push forward on clues for answers. they still don't have a motive, but they say the gunman is a 28-year-old, ian david long. they said he walked into the bar and grill behind me and opened fire killing those 12 people late wednesday night. investigators say it could take them some time to piece together exactly what went wrong inside that nightclub.

they could be back in the crime scene for several more days we're told. meantime we're learning more about the victims, including the sheriff's deputy, the 29-year veteran, one of the first officers in the door who was shot and killed. his family says his funeral will be in the coming days. as for some of the other victims, the youngest just 18 years old. one another survived the mass shooting in vegas but did not make it out of the shooting here in thousand oaks. desperate evacuations are under way after thousands try to outrun a new round of california wildfires. one entire town was incinerated in hours. nbc's gadi schwartz has the latest on this one. >> reporter: good morning this is an eerie sight. you have an ambulance coming through here. emergency vehicles only. everything else is completely deserted. a while ago we saw the fire jump

from this side to this side and it took off. that's towards malibu. you see the santa ana winds picking up from time to time. this is the situation right now in southern california where there are two fires burning within close proximity of each other. up north in northern california there's another fire near paradise, california, called the campfire. that has been even more catastrophic. that's a town of about 27,000 people. it sounds like much of that town has been completely destroyed. we saw yesterday there were reports of people that were stuck in gridlock, having to get out of their cars because there was fire all around them and then they would take off on foot trying to find shelter. firefighters had to clear the roads. they were bulldozing the cars right off the road. obviously that's something they want to prevent from happening down here in southern california, the roadways, at least the 101 here is completely clear if more people need to evacuate. but 75,000 buildings, homes,

structures here in southern california are now being threatened by these two fires. guys, back to you. >> gadi, thank you so much. a federal grand jury las indicted the captain of the tourist duck boat that sank in branson, missouri, killing 17 people. he's accused of misconduct and negligence. the duck boat went down during a storm. among the victims, nine members of the same indiana family. prosecutors say he failed to return to shore even when wind speeds reached twice the legal limit. they also say he failed to tell passengers to put on their life vests. mckee could face up to ten years in prison. a key legal victory for so-called dreamers. a u.s. appeals court docked president trump from repealing a program that sheemds undocumented immigrants from deportation.

♪ we're back this morning. we want to pay tribute to the life of an american hero. >> brent taylor, a mayor in utah, also a major in the national guard, was killed saturday when serving in afghanistan. now, his family is opening up about his service and the ultimate sacrifice. nbc's kristen dahlgren is here with more on a true american hero. >> reporter: brent taylor's life has touched so many people. he lost his life on saturday, but not his ability to bring good in the world. his message is lifting people up, at a time they need it most. major brent taylor was destined for success. >> everybody expected him to do great things, wherever it was. >> reporter: if you think his dream of changing the world died

with him in afghanistan last weekend, you'd be wrong. >> it's been so nice to hear how he helped other people and how he touched other people because that is something that we can hold on to. >> reporter: taylor's mother and brother remembering a born leader, describing him as a loving father and husband. he and five of his brothers enlisted after 9/11. brent earned the purple heart and bronze star for his service. back home, taylor was elected mayor of north ogden, utah, when he got the call to return to afghanistan. on facebook, he talked about why he was going back. >> there's ways to brighten someone's day, to lift burdens and to make our city, state and country a better place. >> he felt he was needed. and he could not say no. >> reporter: major taylor helped secure afghanistan's elections. bursting with pride in his last post, while reminding americans of our own responsibilities as

citizens. writing in part, i hope everyone back home exercises their precious right to vote. adding, we all remember we have far more as americans that unites us than divides us. to his family, that's who brent was. >> when difficult things happened in our family, i could count on about 20 minutes after whatever news it was, he would show up at our door to say, mom, dad, how are you doing? he was a good man. >> reporter: a man who exemplified a life of service. >> he would say, don't wait for the politicians to do it. go out and do it yourself. >> give a little. listen a little more. >> reporter: his casket arriving home on the dawn of election day. >> it's our responsibility to pick up what's been dropped and take it forward. ♪ from the mountains to the prairies ♪ >> reporter: at a candlelight vigil, his widow, jenny, mother of his seven children, doing just that. >> though our hearts are broken, we have no regrets. >> reporter: carrying his

we )re following breaking news: right now at least three major fires are burning across and good morning to you. 8:56. i'm marcus washington. we're following breaking news right now. at least three major fires are burning across the state. the entire city of malibu is being evacuated. in addition to the other 75,000 homes already under evacuation in ventura and l.a. counties.

two different fires burning there. the first fire called the woolsy fire, at least 8,000 acres burned so far. there's a second fire in the area called the hill fire. it's burned up to 10,000 acres. in butte county, the entire town of paradise in parts of the city of chico under evacuation. the camp fire there burned a total of 75,000 acres. hundreds of homes have burned as well as schools and churches. this monster fire really showing no sign of slowing down. it started at 6:30 yesterday morning east of chico and exploded in size, triggering a massive evacuation, a terrifying escape for many. that fire is blowing smoke into the bay area. santa rosa schools will be closed today due to that issue. more news for you in an hour. there comes a point when you realize the bathroom you used to love needs a makeover. let a professional rebath design consultant
