"early today" starts right now. >> i'm marlie hall. >> i'm phillip mena. this morning wildfires are devastating parts of northern and southern california. with about 15,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders. two fires are burning outside of los angeles. the woolsey and hill fires. and in the north, the camp fire has now matched the deadliest fire in state history. >> an additional six human remains were recovered, which brings our current total to 29. >> two more deaths in the woolsey fire bring the total number of people killed in the state to at least 31. but it is the camp fire that is proving to be the most devastating. it's burned through 111,000

acres and destroyed more than 6,000 homes and businesses. officials say it's just 25% contained. nbc's steve patterson is in hard-hit paradise, california. steve? >> reporter: phillip, this town is now filled with grim scenes just like this. rows of cars destroyed by walls of flames and in some cases they served as tombs for terrified residents trying to escape. as we also found, no one in this town is giving up on paradise. at the front line of california's most destructive wildfire, an aggressive response. with improved conditions, more than 4,000 firefighters are putting everything into battling the catastrophic camp fire. paradise is in ruins. scores are missing. whole neighborhoods burned to the ground. >> it was a beautiful place. >> reporter: jim clarkson, a cancer survivor, has lived here for 30 years. >> wow. >> reporter: we were with him when he discovered his home gone. >> you could see over here what it was like.

it was gorgeous. you start over, you know? yeah, it's the tough part about living in paradise is there's fires that come through. >> reporter: nearby at a community meeting, family members made desperate pleas for missing loved ones, some finding relief. >> i was hoping maybe she was here. barbara allen. i know a lot of people in paradise know her. she worked at the paradise community center. anybody seen her? flyers are all over the place. >> she was here today. >> where? >> reporter: some crews are sweeping through residential streets. d.j. came from oregon to rescue animals. >> this is complete devastation. i've seen a lot of things that i wish i didn't have to see. >> reporter: the grueling recovery starting, a sign of hope for a community that may be devastated. >> paradise will be a beautiful town again. >> reporter: but will never be lost. and this camp fire has so far burned more than 100,000 acres,

destroyed more than 6,000 homes. but firefighters are hoping now with this break in the weather, that they can add a little bit more containment and push it back. >> we're all hoping for the same. steve, thank you. in southern california, the woolsey and hill fires have now burned through a combined 90,000 acres near los angeles. the woolsey fire now just 15% contained, is threatening million dollar homes in malibu with celebrities in the thick of the danger. nbc's kathy park has the latest from bell canyon, california. >> reporter: good morning, marlie. the devastating woolsey fire is threatening thousands of structures and destroying communities like this one in bell canyon. santa ana winds back with a vengeance, giving the woolsey fire more strength, spreading flames across southern california. >> how crazy is that? >> reporter: louise and kirk astonished by how fast it's happening. >> the whole area will be on fire like in minutes.

>> reporter: from the ocean to the valley, the fire continues its path of destruction. >> it was a wall of flames that came through. i just ran in the house and watched from the windows. >> reporter: firefighters putting their own lives on the line, racing through the firestorm to protect homes. attacks from the air and on the ground. fatigued firefighters are working around the clock. >> how are you doing? >> we're tired, but this is what we do. >> reporter: engine 66 in los angeles mobilizing in minutes to knock down flare-ups before moving out. >> we're trying to get control so they don't throw any embers and the fire spreads. >> reporter: these spot fires are popping up all over, but it doesn't take long for firefighters to arrive on the scene. the dynamic and dangerous situation changing lives overnight. shane clark lost his bell canyon home while hosing down his dad's place. >> he saved my house. >> reporter: but the family is alive.

and shane managed to keep the one thing that's giving them all hope, ultrasound pictures of his unborn son. >> she's five months pregnant, and it's very nice to be able to still have. >> reporter: proof of life and hope during a very dark time. the dry conditions here in california along with the strong santa ana winds are only making the fire fight even more challenging. residents are asked to stay on high alert. marlie? >> kathy, thank you. president trump and the first lady are back at the white house this morning following a whirlwind trip to paris this weekend where world leaders gathered sunday to commemorate the end of world war i 100 years ago. it was once called the war to end all wars. more than 9.5 million service members and 10 million citizens died during the war between 1914 and 1918. nbc news white house correspondent kelly o'donnell reports from paris. >> reporter: a century after a hard-fought peace, dozens of leaders gathered in paris to show that the world remembers

the great war. president trump teased about the inclement weather when he visited another american memorial. >> he looks so comfortable up there under shelter as we're getting drenched. you're very smart people. >> reporter: 1,565 americans from both world wars rest here. the president stood alone to pay his respects and praised the historic partnership with france. >> we fought well together. you could not fight better than we fought together. >> reporter: but for all the expressions of unity, the host, french president emmanuel macron, delivered a pointed message about the lessons of world war i, an admonition that appeared aimed at president trump, who calls himself a nationalist. >> translator: nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism by

saying, our interest first. who cares about the others? >> reporter: president trump and vladimir putin exchanged greetings at the ceremony and had the opportunity for conversation at a luncheon. >> reporter: the russian president did an interview here and said he and president trump agreed to the french request that leaders not hold separate meetings that could detract from the remembrances. >> translator: we have just said hello to each other. >> reporter: a weekend in paris is never enough time, even for president trump and vladimir putin. but it won't be long before they have an opportunity to meet again. in just a couple of weeks, both leaders are set to go to the g20 summit being held this year in argentina, and there they will have time set aside for discussions. and there are new tensions between the u.s. and russia over things like the intermediate range nuclear missile treaty. the weekend here ended quickly. the president went back to the united states and begins his new week at the white house. phillip? >> kelly o'donnell, thank you.

and with the president back from paris, he now has a new challenge ahead, a divided congress. with democrats gaining control of the house, they say their first priority is to protect robert mueller's investigation into possible russian meddling. and they're already preparing for investigations into the president, including his possible role in facilitating payments to porn star stormy daniels and former playmate karen mcdougal. democrats also say they want to work with republicans on a host of issues. for a look at what to expect, let's bring in nbc's tracie potts. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. let's start with the leadership question because there will be some turnover obviously between the parties, but maybe even within the parties. nancy pelosi not necessarily assuming the house speakership. it looks like she and other top democrats may face some challenges from fresh faces who want to provide new leadership. they're sorting that all out. meantime, there are some familiar faces we expect to see like ranking democrat adam

schiff on the intelligence committee. he is expected to assume the chairmanship of that committee, looking into both hush money payments to women who say that they had affairs with mr. trump, but also looking into protecting the russia investigation and whether the new acting attorney general, matt whitaker, should step back. >> if he has any involvement whatsoever in this russia probe, we are going to find out whether he made commitments to the president about the probe, whether he is serving as a back channel to the president or his lawyers about the probe, whether he's doing anything to interfere with the probe. mr. whitaker needs to understand that he will be called to answer and any role he plays will be exposed to the public. >> reporter: we could also hear more about president trump's taxes as the oversight and government reform committee gets a new democratic head. they may be taking a look into whether or not the president's taxes are in play. marlie? the governor and senate races in california are getting

even more heated. both now undergoing a machine recount. in the senate race, republican candidate rick scott is filing a lawsuit asking votes tallied after last saturday's noon deadline not be counted. his opponent, incumbent senator bill nelson said in a statement in scott wanted to make sure every legal vote is counted, then he would not be suing. in the governor's race, democratic candidate andrew gillum rescinded his earlier concession, calling for every vote to be counted. >> in georgia, democratic gubernatorial candidate stacey abrams is also filing suit, asking for ballots that were wrongfully rejected to be counted. that's according to the associated press. though her opponent, brian kemp, has not yet commented on the suit, his campaign has said there are not enough uncounted ballots left to trigger a june off or recounts. and california republican dana rohrabacher lost his bid for re-election in orange county. democrat harley rouda upset the 15-term congressman who had been seen as vulnerable because he defended russia after

allegations that it interfered with the 2016 election. bill karins is here. >> the high winds in california are going to return, especially to southern california. high wind warnings. imagine being a firefighter out there trying to fight these blazes and you have a high wind warning. gusts up to 70 miles per hour. for that reason we do have extreme fire weather outlook. all of it here in southern california. the red flag warnings actually extend for 21 million people all the way through central and northern portions of california too. the other story on the map is this big rain and even winter weather event. it's snowing in north texas, and snow is moving through oklahoma and kansas. a big rainstorm through the southeast as we go throughout the day today into tonight. that's a look at the big weather storie texas through the

seek asylum in the u.s. but that doesn't seem to have deterred the caravan of migrants still heading north from mexico. nbc's gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: it only took a few days, but on nearly 40 acres in texas, a military base is up and running. >> any idea how long you'll be here. >> no. >> reporter: as some soldiers installed barbed wire, others prepared a medical tent. there are now more than 5,600 new active duty troops spread across the southern border, most in texas, the others in arizona and california. these troops won't be able to apprehend any undocumented immigran immigrants. a day after the midterm elections, the pentagon announced it was no longer calling the mission operation faithful patriot, instead rebranding it as simply border support, no reason given. >> barbed wire used properly can be a beautiful sight. >> reporter: that's provided fuel to skeptics who say the

deadly wildfires continue to burn in northern and southern california. a total of 31 people have been killed across the state with 29 deaths from the camp fire in butte county alone. the camp fire now matches the state's deadliest and is believed to be the most destructive in california history. so far it's burned 111,000 acres and destroy the more than 6,000 homes and businesses. officials say it is just 25% contained. do women face a higher cost to commute? new york university conducted a survey to determine in gender based price discrimination applies to travel in new york city. 75% of female respondents said they've experienced harassment
