of this morning, the problems persist. the big event tonight that could have people grabbing their face masks. "today in the bay" continues right now. you want to play it safe as you head out the door this morning. good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the breaking news in i abit. first we want to get you caught on with what's going on in the bay area. mike has traffic in a bit but kari, you've been talking not only about the cold temperatures but also the smoke. >> the smoke has been really bad and as we step out temperatures are in the 30s this morning in parts of the bay. we are looking at our temperature trend really spread out as we start out and here is a look at that smoke still blanketing san francisco, and the air quality will be unhealthy for all of the bay area. spare the air alert, that means that you should limit your time outside as well. here is a live look outside in palo alto. we start out with some low 50s at 10:00, heading into the upper 60s today, and a look at all of our microclimates coming up. mike, there is a possible problem on the beeay bridge.
6:01 am
>> the smoke you're talking about makes it tough to see the city lights. you see the faint lights over there on the other side of treasure island for the bay bridge. these taillights are crawling up the incline. this time of day we expect it to flow smoothly. that is the issue, because the incline is slow, but look at the bay bridge toll plaza, where the metering lights were turned on about 5:30, but it's not backed up at all. they may slow the metering lights on. the slow sensors here first alerted me to the issue on the span. getting over there, east bay, cocoa county, alameda county moving at speed. no other problems. there is a crash near the dublin interchange, waiting for chp to get more info on that but really that's not an issue. tracking what's going on, on the bay bridge itself, i'll bring you that update coming up. bang to y back to you.
6:02 am
6:01, we follow breaking news, massive wildfires raging across california. in butte county firefighters are battling the camp fire dealing with dangerous weather conditions as the fire sadly claims more lives. the number of confirmed dead stands at 29. the fire has burned more than 111,000 acres, almost the size of the city of san jose. widespread evacuations are in place. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in chico at the fairgrounds, which is where firefighters are staging. bob, what is the mood like there? >> reporter: well, marcus and laura, calfire has called in more than 4,000 men and women to fight the camp fire, which is burning several miles from our location, as you mentioned, we are at the fairgrounds in chico staging area, where the firefighters eat and sleep before they head out to the front lines, and right now, looks like we're definitely in a shift change. breakfast is being served. you see firefighters coming and going perhaps waiting for their assignments for the day.
6:03 am
calfire called in this, looking at the global super tanker, a converted 747 dropping fire retardant on the fire. so far the camp fire is only 25% contained, burned 111,000 acres, destroyed more than 6,000 homes. authorities found the remains of six more people yesterday, raising the death toll to 29 people, making this the deadliest california wildfire in 85 years. sadly, the local sheriff's office says more than 200 people are still unaccounted for. law enforcement is so overwhelmed trying to track those missing individuals. they've set up a missing persons call center to handle all the inquiries. >> my office has located 107 people after receiving in excess of 550 calls from people looking for loved ones. >> reporter: this is video from berry creek, northeast of oroville. good samaritans are saving horses and other trapped animals because berry creek is
6:04 am
unfortunately in the path of the camp fire. cal fire is forecasting strong northeasterly winds today along with low humidity, dry fuels, in other words, another extremely dangerous day for these men and women who be headed out to the front lives. reporting live here in chico, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so sad. the numbers are astounding. thank you, bob. relatives are desperately searching shelters for missing loved one. five search teams are trying to comb through the rubble. >> we have actually learned a stepson of a former san francisco resident who was killed in the fire is among the missing. this is a photo of 36-year-old andrew bird. he acted as a caregiver for 63-year-old ernie foss jr. foss was found dead outside of his paradise home. he was a musician and moved to paradise about eight years ago from san francisco. it's an unsettling situation in southern california, the worry that the strong santa ana winds will make the fight against the woolsey fire much
6:05 am
more difficult, and it is burning in parts of los angeles and ventura counties. nearly 85,000 acres have burned, with just 15% of that fire contained. the fire had destroyed nearly 180 structures. the hill fire has burned nearly 5,000 acres and is 75% contained. at least two people are confirmed dead here, and three firefighters have been injured. more than a quarter of a million have been ordered out of those fire zones. many employees for safety as firefighters continue to rush in. >> it was a wall of flames that came through. >> we it stay along the side. >> the cause of both of those fires is still under investigation. there are several ways you can actually help the victims of these fires. for ways to donate head over to nbcbayarea.com there. you can choose from several ways to donate or volunteer. let's talk about the smoky skies, this morning concerns about air quality lingering across the bay area. if you have trouble breathing
6:06 am
this weekend, scratchy throat, watery eyes, you are hardly alone and the issue, sadly, is not over yet. kari has been talking about the unhealthy air out there. here is today's outlook. it is not looking good. it won't stop things from going outside. >> roz plater is live outside of levi stadium in santa clara, where we might see a lot of those people wearing masks tonight. roz, they have no choice. they're outside. >> reporter: yes, we may see a lot of the 49er faithful come out anyway as you say wearing a mask. the nfl's been monitoring this closely, too, worried about this wildfire smoke that is drifting down here, but as we have seen all weekend, the faithful football fans have been braving the smoke to come out. take a look at this picture from twit tw twitter, heidi fang tweeted this out, at the raiders game folks wearing masks. the dirty, hazy air is
6:07 am
everywhere. the smoke, even ash from the wildfires burning north of butte county, drifting down into the bay area. experts say our air quality is in the unhealthy range, which is hardest on those who already have respiratory illnesses. >> can cause a lot of different symptoms, including irritation of the eyes, throat, the lungs. it can be particularly problematic for people who have lung disease. >> reporter: folks have been buying up those n95 masks, if you spend prolonged time outside. ear' n95, because they're supposed to filter out about 95% of those very tiny particles that can get down into your lungs, and make you sick. the sushrgical and household mas don't do that. get those at a hardware store or pharmacy if you can find them,
6:08 am
because people have been snagging them up to wear during these past few days. meanwhile, that game starts here about 5:00 or so tonight. live in santa clara, i'm roz plater, for "today in the bay." >> 49ers taking on the giants. thanks so much. we see a lot of the people out there braving the smoke yesterday for the raiders game. so today expect more of the same. you want to make sure you are being careful and you are wearing the mask, and also in the car, put your ac on recircula recirculate. limit your time outside and make sure you don't leave the pets outside and stay hydrated. as we look at temperatures for the 49ers game tonight, it will be smoky and hazy as you are out there for the pregame festivities. kickoff at 5:20, it will be 64 degrees. cooling down fast, so make sure you're dressed appropriately. look at all of the bay area's forecast for today, our highs reaching into the upper 60s for much of the inland areas. and mike, you're updating the problem on the bay bridge.
6:09 am
>> i am, kari. look behind me here, a few minutes have passed and now we see all of these lights backed up at the beay bridge. we've slowed down the metering lights to keep folks off the span and backed up over here. so crews can do their work on the span itself. we got an update from chp, a bridge crew that is heading out there. let's go back to that shot for a second. there was a tow truck in this area and it was being dispatched over there to mid span over here, because right at the tunnel, reports of a motorcycle down in your left lanes as you approach the tunnel there. speeds are starting to improve a bit, but that may be because traffic is held up on the incline. i'll track this closely. the light traffic for the rest of the bay means you can go up to the richmond-san rafael bridge or down to the san mateo bridge as options if those are ones you want to consider. meanwhile, i will track that, because it looks like the bridge crew is able to take care of this motorcycle down on the bridge itself, no major injuries reported. there's cocoa county, alameda county, santa clara county moving nice to the peninsula with no delays over there.
6:10 am
back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up here on "today in the bay," buy and install, san jose ebay's new service aimed at getting your business. how it could help you at home if you're not handy. you may want to fill up on gas, because it's going to get more expensive. and later, too close to call, nearly a week after election day, we still don't know who won california's most expensive superintendent race of all-time. when we expect that next update. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:16 am
it slamz it will be called the galaxy f, and should arrive in march. >> it's funny to see the evolution of phones. started out so big, and then they got really small and now they're getting big again. >> there you go. >> at one time they folded but now they're folding. >> all right, so yeah we're starting out this morning checking our phones, looking at the forecast, and you're seeing those numbers really low, looking at your current temperature, and we're still dealing with the smoke-filled skies and our poor air quality across the bay area. this is a live look outside in dublin this morning, and a look at 580. now, unhealthy air quality will continue throughout the day for all of the bay area. the spare of air alert means that you shouldn't burn any wood, and do what you can to improve air quality, because of the smoke from northern california butte county camp
6:17 am
fire still going on. look at the temperatures this morning. turn and look at these numbers as you get ready. it's only 30 degrees headed out the door in santa rosa. it is freezing in fairfield. we do have some other temperatures for our inland valleys that are very close. it's all because the air is just so dry, and then we head out the door in pleasant hill to 37 degrees, as you make your way to the b.a.r.t. station. at 9:00, we're at 51, and reaching into the upper 60s today, so it's going to feel a little bit better today, but still it's going to be smoky and not smell any better. it's going to be in the upper 60s for our highs for much of our inland valleys. san jose reaches 71, and 68 in concord and 68 in napa today. as we go through the forecast, finally a change in the pattern. doesn't happen this week. we will still have our winds to start blowing offshore, but then look at the weekend, our winds shift direction, more of a southerly wind and we are going to possibly see some improvements in our air quality,
6:18 am
but then as high pressure moves away, that opens up the door to allow the jet stream to dip a little bit farther south, and that could carry the storm track into the bay area, and that means rain. so we are looking at some improvements here as we go into next week, but still dry all week long, some upper 60s and low 70s for our highs, more cool mornings and some hazy and smoky days, and then as we go into san francisco, look at that forecast, it will be in the mid-60s all throughout the week. mike, you were tracking that traffic alert for the bay bridge. >> the good news, kari, is that traffic alert has officially been canceled. the bad news is we just can't see through that camera. so we're going to look the traffic flowing on the span is moving very nicely. that was our emeryville camera showing you the span where traffic was flowing nicely toward that tunnel. treasure island,i ieyerba buena island. the fast track lanes are moving better than ten minutes ago so that's recovery. we see recovery, it's only 6:18 on a monday, but it's a holiday
6:19 am
