welcome to friday morning. we are in a microclimate weather alert. very serious concerns, with very poor air quality out there. taking a live look san rafael and dublin. heavy smoke in the air, extremely unhealthy causing a lot of schools to close. we'll have more as you break down with what to do with your kids today. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> aimi'm marcus washington. we get to meteorologist kari hall, dealing with those cotougio everyone is starting to feel the effects of this, as and the numbers are really hazardous. in fact, we were looking around the world, and we have the worst

air quality in the whole world right now, and so it's going to be like throhout the day, still changes in our air quality throughout the afternoon. we'll talk about the incoming a weekend forecast. mike, you're tracking a highway closure. >> this one is not a surprise. the highway over here is 880, the freeway, the interstate, whatever you want to call it, closed for overnight roadwork. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. different for a friday, we see crews clearing early and these folks will be done with the work and on to their weekend. we're looking at speed sensors starting to ease up getting over toward 23rd. i think the tffic break we typically see closer to 5:00 has already happened at 4:30, but i'll track that and let you ausef a things progress. crash. i'll talk about more ndil rio vista that's a concern. that's the only issue for the north bay. we'll handle the bigger ish sue for the north bay and southern

california. >> all week the smoke pouri bay is only going to get worse. one group saying we have the worst air quality in the world right now. >> now to live pictures of san francisco, some cities and counties are actually providing free transportation. they don't want you out walking. we'll have more information on that soon. first, that smoke causing a lot of schools today in the bay area, including a university. there is a very long list. some of the closures are running at the bottom of your screen as well. if you do not know if your school is closed, give them a call ahead of time. some kids in the rest of the ea schoolchildren are having that smoke day, as i mentioned. >> no schools for thousands of students, from kindergarten to college, and as "today in the bay" sergio quintana reports, that left many parents shuffling. >> reporter: each weeknight jennifer gouda picks up her two sons from theause the school di

is closed, they can't keep the day care facility open so they have to be home or i have to find an alternate. >> reporter: she'll spend a full day with them at home. fellow parents had mixed reactions. >> a little bit disappointing to stay all day at home. >> tomorrow for me would have been a normal day because i have parents at home who will take care of the kids. >> reporter: some school districts decided to cancel classes because many school campuses are partially outdoors. >> a lot of the students had to be exposed to outside air even to go to the restrooms. we're not the back east are in the midwest, our school areas are wide open. >> reporter: college and universities shut down but one major exception, wul public schools in santa clara county will remain open. the superintendent tells parents, students are safer and better served indoors within our schools, child care homes and centers and preschools. sergio quintana, "today in the bay."odownload our free nbc

bay area app. it's a great tool to keep news. developing now, new level of concerns for victims in the butte county fire, with the latest of people considered missing. the sheriff says more than 600 people are unaccounted for, although it's likely that at least some of them have simply not been able to notify authorities they're safe. there are 63 confirmed deaths and the camp fire has burned 141,000 acres with 40% containment. president trump plans to visit some of the hardest hit areas. he's scheduled to fly to northern california tomorrow. san jose's police chief is man die a standoff with officers. there will be a news conference later this morning to discuss what startjose. woman told officers she was assaulted by her boyfriend. after a standoff officers found

th mhouse, where he was unresponsive. e later died at a local surveillance video to help track down a fan last seen at monday night's game. take a look here, this is that video showing him leaving the stadium. his girlfriend reported him missing shortly afterward and police say that he left his seat to go to the restroom, and never returned. he is 32-year-old ian powers, and is from spokane, washington. he traveled to the bay area to visit family in antioch, and police say he did make a video call from outside of that stadium after the game, but his car never moved from that lot. 4:35 for you right now. the fbi is helping alcatraz history. >> john and england placed decoy heads in their cell in 1962. the fbi recreated the heads using 3-d technology.

good morning. i'm frank holland here at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set for a lower open this morning. stocks snapping multiday losing streaks yesterday. the dow erasing a 200-point loss to finish up more than 200pe by e, and caterpillar. the markets appeared to rally on a report the u.s. and agreement the g20 meeting later on this month. on today's watch list a report on industrial production. apple is getting into the movie-making business, striking

a multiyear deal with oscar winning indy studio a24 to produce a slate of oraniginal films. apple previously signed deals with the likes of steven spielberg, reese witherspoon and oprah. it's unclear if the movies will be released in movies or digital platform. a24 won awards for "moonlight "room" and "ladybird." fao schwartz and the giant piano keyboard of back. three years after it closed its doors on new york's fifth avenue it is opening a new location today in rockefeller center, about ten blocks from its former home near central park. this new version will be smaller, but will have some familiar attractions, like that keyboard, and the musical clock tower. those are your cnbc business headlines. pretty cool to see that store back open. >> perfect timing, right before the whole da

>> get ready, frank, tickling the ivories in a different way. >> i'll do the big scene on my own. >> thanks, frank. all right, let's check the forecast with kari. another cool start to our morning? >> another cold start, it's been all about the air quality and the smoke we're seeing as kro the bay area. palo alto starts at 44 degrees at 8:00, and then reaching into the mid-60s, although we are not really going to be spending that much time outside. we'll talk about our air quality for the weekend, and the rest of the forecast, coming up.

good friday morning to you. 4:44 right now. taking a look out in oakland, where the air quality is not good. we're seeing that across the bay area. we'll have a better look at that coming up in just a bit. snow days may be back east. heavy snow continued to fall into new york and new england. looks like travelers there managed to get by, but this is the first major storm big nor'easter they're experiencing in that area there. you can see it's already going to be what you would think would be a white christmas in albany, new york, this morning. you can see some of the snowflakes coming down right there. seems refreshing when you see all the smoke that we're having here in california. >> yes. it's been dangerous, too. so many deaths, too. >> sadly, exactly. those air concerns, you're going to notice it most definitely as you head out the door. >> and as you head out the door, hopefully you're wearing a mask.

i've seen a lot of people out walking around without one. you want to make sure that are protecting your lungs. here is a look at bay bridge toll plaza. i'm showing this because you can see the light and all the smoke that is hanging thick in the air, and it's going to be very unhealthy to be out there all across the bay area. now, they've extended the smoke advisory until tuesday night, so that's new this morning, and then also we are also continuing to advise you to be careful out there, and then as we take a look at our temperatures this morning, another cold start with near freezing temperatures in parts of the north bay, and the rest of the bay area, with some upper 30s and lower 40s. looking at our high temperatures today, headed into the upper 60s and low 70s and a lot of smoke. let's talk about our wind. that's what's been changing our plumes of smoke and the air quality and where it's coming from. so our winds coming in from the north, and then turning more westerly, kind of just blowing offshore across the north bay,

so a lot of the smoke going into those areas, and that's at 2:00 this afternoon. by later on this evening, there will be slight shifts in the wind, but the wind is so light, it doesn't make much of a difference, and as we go into the day tomorrow, we also see variable winds, but by 4:00, there will be mainly an onshore wind flow, so that's something a little bit different that may improve it just for a little while, and then as you can see, by sunday morning, the winds are shifting again. so we are getting ready for some rain, and so excited about that, and it's something that could really help us out here. we are tracking the rain and the clouds that are still well off to the west of the bay area, and we'll be moving closer as we go into next week, so we're looking again at all the computer models and showing that we will start to have more of a southerly wind by tuesday. wednesday our first wave of rain l ping,nd there may be a little bit of a break on thanksgiving with another round of rain on friday, possibly a

third round of rain approaching by saturday into sunday. so we have several rain chances in the forecast next week, and computer models still vary on how much rain we're going to see, but they're all showing some hefty amounts, which of course raises some other concerns of the water being basically contaminated by all the wildfire smoke and the things that have burned. so we'll be watching that. as we look at our temperatures, it's going to cool off, even more, as we go into next week. we're still feeling temperatures above normal for the inland valleys, reaching into the upper 60s for the next few days. mike, do you have a change for the better on the nimitz? >> i do, and i take advantage when we say that, because the nimitz has a bad reputation, one of the nicknames is nasty nimitz but now it's nice nimitz, 880 northbound past 23rd, look at the green sensors for this friday morning and the road crews wanted to get set on their weekend early so 880 is clear through oakland. gh highway 12

at denverton, there was a crash around denverton road, taking you to larvey. you're not familiar with the names or the area, fairfield is over there, rio vista is over here in the north bay. hoping to get an update from chp, but that is the issue over in the north bay. getting over toward the carquinez bridge and benicia bridges, traffic flow is nice, commutes into and through contra costa county, highway 4 no slowing. walnut creek interchange an easy drive. upper east shore toward the been about be is fine as well. kari showed you the smoke in the shot from our bay bridge toll plaza camera. here in the north bay, southbound 101 moves nicely, an easy drive through san rafael, down across the going goilden g bridge. 4:48, a lot of questions after a ceo was killed in his san francisco office and police say an employee may be behind it all. >> jean elle is at headquarters with details. >> it's unsettling, right next

door to me, it's like -- not a great neighborhood, but i never had anything like that happen in this building that i know about. >> reporter: the office door next to ron rosen's apartment has a medical examiner's seal on it. the ceo of real mobility, a company that makes electric accessibilities for wheelchairs was killed inside. co-worker reported bart kylestrom missing wednesday. when office came to check his mid market office they found the 52 dead inside. >> three police cars and an ambulance counsdown there and a all i know. >> reporter: a real mobility employee killed theent prix nuur after kylstra aus couped the worker of embedels $100,000, alleging tasing and then beating the ceo to death. >> really, really sad. >> reporter: people who live in his soma apartment complex say they are stunned name, who was always happy to help, is gone.

>> i'm laura garcia. the big story is that smoke. it is said we have worse air quality than china right now. we've heard the reports of how bad it is there. we'll get to more on that in a moment. first i want to check on the morning commute. >> we have fewer cars than china. >> which will help. >> green all over the roadways and on the traffic front, the two closures that we have have cleared up. construction zone at 23rd for north 880 cleared through oakland. all of the green sensors all over the way. easy drive out of the tri valley, although we see a build. the maze eastbound 580 a crash there near 24 on the interchange. we may have a few minutes until they can clear that. i'll track that closely but that does not affect folks getting to the bay bridge, as we zoom out the second closure to the top of the screen denverton cleared from highway 12, better news as well. clear green roadways but a little glow. this is a shotm
