humanitarian crisis. pe many are living in shelters. the president is expected to be in the area joined by the governor and governor-elect. this morning, president trump flying cross country to see california's deadliest and most destructive fire first hand. but not before another round of critical comments about forest mismanagement on fox news. >> you wouldn't have the fires. >> what about the argument it is climate change and drier and hotter and that is contributing? >> maybe it contributes a little bit. the big problem we have is management. >> reporter: trump's second visit to the state comes during the numbers released during the deadly camp fire which continues to burn in northern california. at least 71 people dead. more than 1,000 others unaccounted for. some evacuees lost connection with loved ones, including 87-year-old edith jensen. >> i called the sheriff's office and told them i wasn't missing. >> reporter: now another threat.

unhealthy air. the smoke can be seen in san francisco, oregon and even space. the air so bad in sacramento, that one day of breathing it in is roughly equal to smoking 14 cigarettes. with their piece of paradise gone, the tent cities offer some comfort that's if they can get in. several are not accepting more evacuees. in the meantime, norovirus hit this shelter in chico. 52,000 people forced out by the flames in butte county are left with haunting memories like helen who threw her wheelchair down the stairs to speed up her escape. >> i thought i was going to die. i really did. >> reporter: chilling stories of survival. lives forever changed. the devastation far from over. >> kathy, from the beginning, we heard the president. he blamed the fires on forest mismanageme mismanagement. he did it again. he made no mention the fact were

forest fires. that complaint offended a lot of californians as he has tried to dial back his tone. what kind of welcome is he expected today? >> reporter: after speaking with residents, it seems like the priority is getting their lives back in order. the governor and governor-elect put out a joint statement saying they welcome the presidential visit and grateful for the response. >> kathy park in california. thank you. a challenge for the trump administration this morning. a key ally in the crosshairs. nbc news learned that a cia assessment concludes that the saudi crown prince did order the killing of "washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi. a claim the crown prince denied since khashoggi's death in early october. now the question is how will the white house respond? we have lucy kafanov following this from london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. the cia announced that the crown

prince ordered the jamal khashoggi assassination. this is ruling against the claims that the de facto ruler was not involved. a murder mystery closer to being solved. the cia concluded that the saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman ordered the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi. according to the source briefed on the assessment. reportedly made in confidence, the report is based on intelligence which nbc news has yet to confirm independently. according to "the washington post," the crown prince's brother and ambassador to the u.s. called khashoggi telling the journalist to go to the consulate in istanbul. the ambassador denying the allegation on twitter. saying i never talked to him by phone and never suggested he go to turkey. the saudis insist the crown prince is innocent. >> royal highness has nothing to do with the issue. >> reporter: this week, charging 11 people in khashoggi's murder

with five facing the death penalty. the latest saudi version of events claims the journalist was killed by a lethal injection. his body dismembered and taken out of the building. contradicting the earlier claim he was strangled. the whereabouts of khashoggi's remains are still unknown. but mourners gathered friday to remember the slain journalist. prayers over an empty marble slab in istanbul. a funeral for a father of four and friend to many who won't be coming home. vice president mike pence this morning would not comment on classified information. he did say the u.s. will hold all involved with the murder to account. this intel puts the white house in a difficult position. the trump administration has cultivated close ties with the crown prince. they did slap sanctions against 17 saudi officials this week, but did not target mohammed bin salman. if the intelligence is

confirmed, there will be a lot of pressure on the white house for a tougher response. >> absolutely. l lucy, thank you. president trump is speaking out about the russia investigation. saying he finished his written answers to the special counsel about the interference in the 2016 election. the president insisting he has done nothing wrong. we have kelly o'donnell with more. >> reporter: good morning, peter. a pair of legal dramas for the president. federal court is intervenes in the dispute with the white house and journalist over press credentials and the long running investigation where the president is now taking part in something that he has called a hoax and witch hunt. now he is complying with a major request from prosecutors. from the oval office friday, president trump revealed he is personally responding to russia investigation questions from the special counsel. >> i'm working on that. i write the answers. my lawyers don't write answers. >> reporter: he said he would

hand over the responses after his legal team signs off. the president also accused prosecutors of setting a perjury trap. >> was the weather sunny or rainy? he said it may have been a good day. it was rainy. he told a lie.perjered himself. >> reporter: again insisting he and his campaign did not collude with russia. mr. donald trump said the probe is about him. >> it should never have been an investigation. it is not an investigation of me, but as far as i'm concerned, i like to take everything personally because you do better that way. >> reporter: after the white house clash with cnn. >> you are a rude, terrible person. >> reporter: friday, a federal judge appointed by the president, granted a temporary return of the cnn correspondent's press pass which had been revoked by the white

house. the legal battle will continue, but press secretary sarah sanders issued a statement. today the court made clear there is no absolute first amendment right to access the white house. the president said he wants new standards for press conferences. >> decorum. you can't take three questions and four questions and just stand up and not sit down. decorum. >> kelly, the appointment of matt whitaker as acting attorney general. whitaker still facing criticism this morning. facing a formal legal challenge. what is the argument in that case? >> reporter: whitaker has not been confirmed by the senate for the position. even the acting role of attorney general. that is a real core of the debate. in a new twist on the challenge, an existing lawsuit that bears the name of jeff sessions, who was forced out as attorney general, is asking the supreme court put rod rosenstein's name on the document. deputy attorney general who

formally would move up -- normally would move up in the ranks and say it is not legal to put whitaker in place because he was not confirmed. going about this to ask the court to weigh in on the existing case and say whitaker does not have the legal standing to be acting attorney general. the white house says the appointment is appropriate, but this will continue to be a legal fight. peter. >> the concern among critics trying to rein in the russia investigation. kelly, thank you. also this morning, hundreds of migrants arrived at the border where u.s. troops are ready for their arrival. the migrant caravan was the issue for the president ahead of the mid terms. since the election, he has been quiet on it. we have nbc's gabe gutierrez with us this morning on the california side of the border. >> reporter: good morning, shoi sheinelle. so far the process has been orderly as they an wade fwait a.

more than 1,300 soldiers are here in california. makeshift shelters are overflowing. 3,000 migrants are there. more are expected in the coming days. the system is so overwhelmed that migrants are expecting to wait at least a month at the border before even being processed. the president, meanwhile, has all but dropped the issue after calling it an invasion and using it to rally supporters ahead of the midterms. one estimate calls this cost of the deployment at $220 million. here at the crossing, customs has shutdown multiple lanes of traffic and more migrants are expected in tijuana. some may decide to head elsewhere. >> gabe, thank you. to florida now where election officials in several counties have a few more hours

nelson. the 67 counties, only three fluctuate between democrat and republican. it shows the very tight margins that divide the country. it comes down to about 1%. who will govern us? >> talk about another headline today. the analysis that the cia has assessed that the crown prince of saudi arabia ordered the killing of "the washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi. saudi arabia is crucial to the administration's strategy in the middle east. jared kushner is very friendly with the man known as mbs. the sanctions on 17 saudis this week. is there more pressure to do more? >> president trump has been very careful to avoid anything that is going to go negatively on the crown prince. he has been trying to keep pressure off and protect the crown prince. >> that is their calculus. >> it looks pretty obvious there

next storm system that will race through the rockies and the midwest. two batches of snow. some falling through chicago and some back to the rockies. especially in the higher elevations. this cold front will continue to move eastward as we go through the day. we will see snow off and on through chicago and it will move to the east as we go into tonight. then we are looking at some light snow in cleveland, across upstate new york on sunday and new england. it is a fast-moving system. it will not produce a lot of snow. back through the rockies out near denver, we will see perhaps 4 to 8 inches of snow in the higher elevations mostly and moving eastward. it is a widespread 1 to 2 inches of snow with upstate new york temperatures. look at san francisco. 49 degrees right now and we are expecting these colder temperatures to stick around for the next couple of hours.

cautionary tale. as parents, rowdy and julie gaines say it was the worst nightmare. >> the fear i had never known. >> reporter: the three-time olympic medalist knows it was a scam from callers who claimed to kidnap their daughter to get money from them. at the time, they never heard of virtual kidnapping. when they got a call from a number that appeared to belong to their daughter, they assumed it was her. >> i had my children's faces. it popped up with her face and number. i had no reason to believe it was not her. >> the other person was threatening to slit her throat and kill himself. >> reporter: they had the presence of mind to start recording the call. the scammers then gave instructions. >> well, i have -- i don't have my keys to my car. >> we're walking. >> reporter: later, they heard madison's voice on the phone. >> when i questioned madison, are you okay.

she said i'm okay, but i need help. >> reporter: little did they know she was also being scammed on the other side of the country while at college in colorado. >> they said hi, we're with the colorado springs police department. is this madison. i said yes. i said so you know, there is a warrant out for your arrest. i felt terrified and i was emotionally just distraught the whole time. >> reporter: judy ended up contacting the police who told them it was a scam and they hung up on the callers. in the end, the family believes they were vulnerable because of details they share about their lives on social media. >> we need to be more aware of what we put out there. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating this and say you can protect yourself. in most cases, the first thing you should do is hang up. if you do engage, never use a loved one's name. and if this happens to you, police say try to reach out to the alleged kidnapped victim on

london. >> reporter: good morning. this is a major development in this disturbing story. according to a person briefed on the cia's assessment the agency believes that the saudi crown prince, mohammed bin salman, ordered khashoggi's killing. the cia made their assessment with high confidence which cited intercepts of phone calls, audio recordings as well as a call by the kill team to a close aide of the crown prince. now, saudi arabia denies that mbs had anything to do with this, charging 11 people in khashoggi's murder this week, five are facing the death penalty. the latest saudi version of events and it has shifted quite a bit, claimed that he was killed by a lethal injection and that his body was miss mebd and smuggled out of the consulate. i should add that his remains have yet to be found. this murder has created something of a crisis for the trump administration because of its close relationship with the crown prince. the u.s. slapped sanctions against 17 saudi officials this week, those did not target

mohammed bin salman. there is going to be a lot of pressure if the intelligence is confirmed for a much tougher response. guys? >> the question is will they hold him personally accountable. lucy, thank you. back here at home, president trump has left the white house on his way to california, but he is speaking out this morning about the khashoggi killing and a lot more. nbc's white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is following that part of the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. an unusual early morning gaggle with reporters and the president as he did leave for the white house for his visit to california, making two stops today. he took questions from reporters on the south lawn and he was asked about this new development that lucy was just reporting on from the "washington post" and nbc news, that the cia has determined that saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman did order the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi. the president said a short time ago he would be briefed. here is what the president had to say to reporters. >> they have been a truly spectacular ally in terms of jobs and economic development

and i also take that -- i'm president, i have to take a lot of things into consideration. so we will be talking with the cia later and lots of others. i will be doing that while i'm on the plane. i will be speaking also with secretary of state mike pompeo. >> reporter: and the president also said so far he has not personally been briefed on any involvement by the crown prince, so this is a developing story. the president also talked about developments in the russia investigation and he said that he would be turning over his written answers to the special counsel this coming week. this is after the 18-month investigation, the president has complied and is writing answers. he says himself, but he will turn those in after his lawyers have a chance to look at it. and as the president headed out, he also said that he will meet today with california's current governor and the newly elected governor, he will meet with firefighters and in response to these devastating fires, he said there are more people missing

this morning in "weekend kitchen" we are all tackling the kitchen table. we are happy to have siri daly with us. she is with us this morning and she will show us how to make something easily for thanksgiving for our feast. >> it smells like thanksgiving. >> it does. >> saute onions. >> we start with the reecipe we can all do. >> this is essentially a casserole with eggs, bread and cheese. you can throw any vegetable in there. we are doing broccoli and cheddar and mozzarella. i will get the whole grain musta mustard. >> that is what i don't have. >> you can use any mustard. salt, pepper. i like it. it gives it a nice finish. salt, pepper, nutmeg, that goes

a long way. over here, cast iron skillets are one of the great things. saute, bake and serve. onions and garlic and broccoli. this isis sauteing. this is day old bread. you don't want to use fresh bred. -- bread. if you only have fresh, you toast it. you can toss it. you can use the tongs because it gets crowded. we will put our mozzarella. we will do half of it first, toss it and top it with the rest. parmes parmesan. you bake it for 40 minutes. it is simple. the good way to get your kids to eat broccoli. spinach and kale. >> mozzarella can be plain, but

that air quality. as you see it, its very apparent. we don't even need to tell you. you can visibly see it and feel it. look at the current temperatures. if you're heading out the door right now, do not forget that jacket because you're going to feel the biting cold, especially if you're heading anywhere near the north bay or interior valleys, below freezing temperatures right now at 29 degrees in santa rosa, 33 in napa, 42 down through hayward and in the 40s for san jose, 30s up along the peninsula. now that ridge of high pressure that was keeping us very dry and warm is starting to weaken and now we've got a bit of a trough coming in which is great news in terms of the air quality as we head in toward tomorrow. we have seen slight improvement along the bay. however, we're still expecting to keep a lot of that smoke over the area and that's why that smoke advisory is expected through tuesday. i'm going to break down those rain chance that's i'm tracking as we head in toward thanksgiving coming up
