"early today" starts right now. >> good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> and i'm phillip mena. the busiest travel time of the year is underway. with over 2 1/2 million fliers expected to hit the airports today, a record number of passengers are expected to fly to their turkey day celebrations. the worst of it, the ride back on sunday with more than 3 million passengers expected. >> here in new york, the n.y.p.d. is ramping up security measures ahead of the 92nd annual macy's thanksgiving day parade. authorities saying there will be a heavy police presence on the ground, including the use of bomb-sniffing dogs. 3.5 million people are expected to line the streets during the parade despite a forecast of record cold temperatures, including single-digit wind

chills. and nbc's meteorologist bill karins is here with ane peek of the thanksgiving forecast. >> it's unbelievable. this cold is unprecedented. no one alive in new york city is going to see a thanksgiving this cold before. today is not bad. there is not a lot of av issues. in the west the storm comes in, all day we'll have our biggest travel concerns. the parade forecast, we've been talking about it. wind chills will be in the single digits for the millions people lining the streets. temperatures will only be in the low 20s. this is how cold it's going to be in the entire region. 10 in green bay. western new york at 1. northern portions of new england, guys, are going to be negative wind chills on thanksgiving morning. not just for the parade, but for anyone getting to your destinations, as cold as it gets. >> looking like ralphie's brother for christmas. that's how we want to do it. thank you, bill. there is a stunning report out dogging the white house this morning. "the new york times" reports president trump wanted to order the d.o.j. to criminally

prosecute hillary clinton and fired fbi director james comey. quoting two sources familiar with the conversation, the president spoke about possible prosecutions to the white house counsel at the time and apparently dropped the idea after advisors said the move could possibly get him impeached. we get the details from nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: in the explosive new report, "the new york times" said the coffer asian happened last spring. presidenum donthat he wanted th department to prosecute hillary clinton and former fbi director james comey. the newspaper cites two people familiar with the conversation. the times says mcgahn told the president he had no authority to order that, and that white house lawyers drafted a memo for the president, that if he asked law enforcement to investigate his rivals, he could face a range of consequence, including possible impeachment. even as a presidential candidate, mr. trump hinted at ordering an investigation into clinton. >> but if i win, i am going to

instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. >> reporter: and the new report raising more questions about the president's tense relationship with his justice department, including firing attorney general jeff sessions, to new fears from democrats that his replacement matt whitaker might curtail the mueller investigation. >> it's going to be up to him. i think he's very well aware politically. i really believe he's going to do what's right. >> reporter: neither the white house nor don mcgahn responded to our requests for comment. all of this comes as the president and his legal team say they have submitted written answers to special counsel robert mueller, though they say much of it was, quote, beyond the scope of legitimate inquiry. phillip? >> all right, kristen, thank you. >> could cutting the comedy get president trump to the white house correspondents dinner this year? he seemed to hint as much after pulitzer prize winner will speak at next year's event.

that is an option or an angle that we continue to pursue. >> reporter: and as police now search for answers they are asking the public for help. >> this is tragic here in colts neck, and we need to pray for these people. >> reporter: while neighbors in this quiet can only wonder what went so wrong just days before thanksgiving. kristen dahlgren, nbc news, new york. >> after being decimated by one of the deadliest fires in northern california, officials in the town of paradise are now in the spotlight for narrowing down their roads. this iss according to a new report in the l.a. times. it happened in 2015 and was called the downtown paradise safety project where four lanes were reduced to two to reduce conges.but now officials say itd a deadly evacuation bottleneck and gridlock conditions as thousands of residents tried to flee the fire. paradise's mayor jodi jones says residents evacuated in about 2 1/2 hours and doesn't believe the narrowing of the roads was an issue.

northern california residents in the camp fire area are under a flash flood watch this morning. and while that may help firefighters who have fire at 75% containment, the clock is ticking for crews still searching for survivors. with 870 people still missing and the death toll at 81, the rain could trigger mudslides, making recovery and identification even more difficult. the woolsey fire is at 96% containment, and its debris flow and rock slides that pose a new threat now. >> millions of people are going to be paying attention to bill karins and the weather today. it matters. >> probably a lot of people up now that aren't. they're heading out the door for a long ride or maybe an early flight. let's get into it today. there is not a lot of bad weather to be had. late we will see airports on the west coast with possible delays. maybe wind delays in new york city and boston shouldn't be too bad. buffalo could have snow squalls to deal with. if you're driving on the highways, 90 would be one of the worst roads for the squalls in
