will roll. >> it's cold. there's a lot of wind. we'll find out what happens. the weather has been the talk of the town. it's bitter cold. maybe the coldest thanksgiving we've had in a generation. >> last night when they were having the balloons blown up, it was snowing. it was a beautiful site, but we wonder what will this morning bring. >> we're going to find out. there's one guy that makes the call of whether the balloons will fly, and he's standing to my right. we're going to find out in just a few. >> i think we should head up to the upper west side where mr. roker is on the parade route. where everything begins. the bands. take it away, al. >> we are at 77th and central park west. they're getting ready to get the balloons ready. the macy's stars are ready. there's tom turkey up there. i can now officially announce this is the coldest macy's thanksgiving day. the temperature is at 20

across the nation huge crowds are causing plenty of holiday headaches. more than 54 million americans traveling for thanksgiving. planes. >> never seen a line like this before, ever. >> trains. >> delay after delay on the trains. >> and automobiles. >> traffic is ridiculous. >> all setting holiday travel records. according to aaa this holiday weekend promises to be busiest in more than a dozen years with 48.5 million u.s. motorists on the road between thanksgiving and sunday. amtrak is reporting full trains. >> i've been on the bus. i said i'm too old for that nonsense. >> over 750,000 passengers expected to ride the rails this week. a new york city bound amtrak train became disabled. two of the cars separating from the locomotive. thankfully there were no reports of injuries. >> manhattan parade enthusiasts braving the chilly temperatures

to check out the big balloons being ready for today's festivities. >> some of them look cute like the pills bury something guy. >> macy's employees pumped up. >> it's the best day of the year. we have a lot of fun. >> we have 26 floats. 12 bands. 10,000 marchers. a whole lot going on. >> potentially high winds causing some concern that the balloons may not fly. the nypd's rule lower or remove the balloons if the winds reach a certain part. >> based on the wind conditions, we have different levels that the balloons will fly. >> along with the winds, historic cold in new york. the temperature will be in the twenties but will feel even worse. >> bundle up. wear layers. it should be a fun day. >> and people started lining up to get a good seat for the parade hours ago. i've been out here about ten

minutes and my hands are already frozen. it is a cold one, as you are well aware. >> it is, dylan. i just lost a finger while you were doing that intro. >> you're listening to the sounds of "my fair lady". the musical" isn't she loverly". we want to bring in a couple of very important people. there's a lot on their plates this morning. james o'neal is the commissioner of the new york city police department. rodney harrison is the chief of patrol. commissioner o'neal, we've been waiting for this moment. a lot of people have been wondering if these big balloons are going to go. i think it's time to make a declarati declaration. what do you think? >> i was going to leave this to rodney, but i'll steal the thunder. the parade is a go. it's chilly. i'm trying not to look too cold. this is nothing compared to last year's new year's eve. new york city has a lot to be thankful for. i have a lot to be thankful for,

especially the men and women from the nypd who have been out here and will be until this afternoon. thank them for doing a great job. >> and chief harrison, i said there was one guy who makes the call about the balloons. we're happy to hear the winds are okay and they'll be able to fly. you kind of do this moment to moment. there's somebody assigned to each and every one of these balloons? >> yes. first, happy thanksgiving to you and your family. we have supervisors assigned to each of the 16 large balloons and also the monitors that are the weather instruments that tell us hey, listen, maybe we need to lower it a little bit or let it go up depending on the wind gusts throughout the parade. >> we're so happy the traparade going to roll. the other thing you guys obviously have your eye on is safety. you're taking a lot of extra measures this year. >> we are. we have thousands of police officers out here as we do every

year. we have a block of cars. there will be no unauthorized vehicles in or out. we have aviation and k-9s. everybody is here looking to keep -- >> the entire alphabet. >> they are. they're going to do a great job. >> and we always want to remind everyone, if you see anything along the parade route -- there's even an app or pull over one of the thousands of officers. if you see something, say something. >> tell one of the officers, call 9-1-1 or use our hot line, 888-nyc-safe. >> we want to thank the men and women of the nypd. you guys do it like nobody else. a lot of people could be spending this holiday with their family. instead, they're out here. talk about them. >> this is what they do. it's not just on thanksgiving. it's new year's and christmas. they do it without complaint. we're in such a good place in new york city now.

nbc white house correspondent kristen welker is with us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving. this is an extraordinary war of words between the president and the chief justice of the supreme court. it's almost unheard of for the president to take on a member of the high court, but now john roberts is getting the trump twitter treatment. this morning supreme smackdown. chief justice john roberts issuing an almost unprecedented rebuke of president trump. after mr. trump criticized a ruling from a federal judge, an obama appointee in san francisco. part of the ninth circuit that put a hold on the president's plan to crack down on those seeking asylum on the border. >> you go to the ninth circuit and it's a disgrace. this was an obama judge. >> reporter: when asked about the comment by the associated press, the chief justice said we do not have obama judges, trump judges, bush judges or clinton judges. what we have is an extraordinary

group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. he added, that independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for. president trump tweeted back wednesday in one saying sorry chief justice john roberts but you do, indeed, have obama judges, and they have a much different view than the people charged with the safety of our country in another, judicial activism by people who know nothing about security and the safety of our citizens is putting our country in great danger. and even suggesting dividing up the ninth circuit. president trump and the top justice have had a checkered relationship. recently mr. trump praising roberts during a white house ceremony. >> chief justice roberts, where are you? thank you very much. >> reporter: but has a candidate he was critical. >> justice roberts turned out to be a nightmare for conservatives. >> reporter: roberts typically

cautious and restrained in his public statements stressed the independence while speaking to law students earlier this year. >> what i would like to do briefly is emphasize how the judicial branch is, how it must be very different. >> reporter: the president is digging in tweeting, justice roberts can say what he wants, but the ninth circuit is a complete and total disaster want it is out of control, has a horrible reputation, is overturned more than any other circuit in the country. 79%. and is used to get an almost guaranteed result. judges must not legislate security. but it's not all fire and brimstone from the president. he also tweeted, "happy thanksgiving to all." he will spend the day visiting members of the military and with family. >> thank you, happy thanksgiving to you. now to new questions after the centers for disease control's urgent warning to keep romaine lettuce off the thanksgiving table. with an e. coli outbreak

stretching across 11 states, why can't investigators track down the source faster? nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest. the outbreak came in california, similar to one last year that left one person dead and left at least 25 sick. the 2017 outbreak traced to leafy greens but ton romaine lettuce -- not to romaine lettuce specifically. the fda saying the strain that caused that outbreak is similar to the one that's causing this outbreak. and the timing is exactly the same. consumer advocates say it's vital for the cdc to move quickly. >> every minute and every hour that they're waiting to find the source that's more time that onsumers could be out there eating the product and getting exposed. >> reporter: with at least 32 people sick in 11 states, romaine lettuce is being pulled

from restaurants and grocery stores across the nation just on time for the holiday. >> i bought the lettuce and heard about it and tossed it today, as a matter of fact. >> reporter: grocery store owner roy rodman says he pulled all of his romaine from the shelves as soon as he heard the warning. >> we're waiting for definitive action from food and drug administration, and the cdc to let americans know what is next. >> reporter: experts agree saying more companies should adopt block chain technology. walmart using it to track the movement of produce from farm o distribute tore shipper to store in seconds. this thanksgiving romaine is off the table and the menu as dozens fall ill, more than six weeks after the outbreak began. for "today," miguel almaguer, los angeles. one couple has a lot to be grateful for. tina and harold were tidying up

their house before relatives arrived for the holiday. they came across unchecked lottery tickets on their night stand. one of them a ticket from june was a big winner. >> need to take a look at this. handed the ticket to him and i said i'm going to call out the numbers, and let me know what you think. >> well, the prize? $1.8 million. and get this. the ticket would have expired in two weeks. tina says the moral of the story? check your tickets and don't wait. >> also sounds like they might be living right. man. >> right? two weeks and 1.8 million. >> speaking of living right, mr. roker is up town. the rest of the forecast. still 20 degrees, sir? >> still 20 degrees. we got the ohio state band walking through. they're getting ready for their parade start. and if you look up here, frank, there's the sock up there. that's a little wind sock. it gives you an idea. right now not a lot going on.

in fact, as we look at the macy's balloons and stars, you can see they're not moving around too much. this is going to be one of those things that i think the balloons are going to be okay. we're pretty excited about that. let's look at the forecast and show you what's happening as far as your weather is concerned. we start off coldest macy's day parade since 1924. look at that. boom. we are now the coldest on record. we are proud to be out here, because it's so cold. look at the rest of the northeast. right now it feels like 6 in new york. 3 below in boston. 2 in buffalo. 22 in cleveland, and 23 in indianapolis. and even colder tomorrow morning for portland, new york, richmond, beckly, west virginia, indianapolis. records could fall tomorrow morning. we're looking at records possible for boston, albany,

binghamton and jfk. smashing records. for the parade, cold and windy today. maybe 21 degrees at 9:00 a.m. gusts maybe to 30. noontime 26. the rest of the country, we are looking today at basically fairly nice weather, although it will be raining in far to the pacific northwest into northern california. i am truly thankful on this day. you gave me courage, kindness, beauty, confidence... you gave me all that... in my children. door in the 50s. eventually our daytime highs will climb into the 60s. here's what it looks like in san francisco. it's about 56 degrees. we do have an incoming storm system. our doppler radar shows nice and dry conditions, but as we head in towards this evening, that rain will begin in the north bay moving southward. for all those currently heading to the turkey trot in downtown san jose, no rain. just bundle up as the temperatures are only expected to be in the 50s for the next couple of hours. that race starts at 8:30 a.m. as we head in towards the afternoon, we'll still keep that cloud cover. expect a combination of sun and clouds as the next system moves in. let's get a check of the roads because we're keeping a close eye on this. i saw this accident pop up in the south bay. i'll take a look at that. overall it's been a minor fender-bender all morning long. the bay bridge toll plaza has been looking amazing. no metering lights. as we head into the evening, drive safe as we track that incoming rain.

lebron james returned to cleveland last night for the first time since leaving the cavs to join the l.a. lakers. take a look. james got quite the thunderous standing ovation as he walked out on the court there. james thanked the crowd and later said, i appreciate these fans just as much as they appreciate me. lebron, of course, grew up in nearby akron, ohio. he spent 11 seasons with the cavs. last night king james put up 32 points to lead the lakers to a win. savannah and hoda right outside macy's flagship. it looks like it might be a little cold. >> it is cold.

friends where they've had the burn scars, we are looking at flash flood watches as more heavy rain comes in, anywhere from 1-3 inches through saturday as this system continues to see more wet weather. midwest rain and snow on sunday for your travel. that could be a big problem. chicago could be looking at some heavy rain, airport delays and highway impacts from chicago to minneapolis. minneapolis on i-35 to okc, omaha to chicago on if you're heading outside, you might notice it's sunny. we still have a couple clouds lingering here and there. overall, our radar has dried off quite nicely before that second system is expected to make its arrival into this afternoon. but if you're going to be heading out to the turkey trot in downtown san jose, this is what your forecast is looking like.

we are at base camp in texas. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. that's right. we're at base camp donna. we're inside a mobile kitchen where they started working this morning at 4:00 a.m. this is a military operation run with military precision. they have three different seatings for a total of 2000 troops and some guests as well helping them all out. they've got 91 culinary specialists and eight of these mobile kitchens now. outside they're doing operation deep fry and 800 pounds of turkey that way. another 3,000 servings of roasted turkey. 14,000 pounds of steak. 300 pounds of mashed potatoes, and of course, there's apple pie to finish it all off. the meal they'll get is similar to what they might get. we just lost power. they're on a generator. i suspect they'll figure it out. the meal they'll get is similar to what they get in iraq and afghanistan. there's some 40,000 u.s. troops

recipe. it's something that's been brought to my restaurant for 25 years. it's been the most unbelievable dish everybody wants to have as a side. >> what are the ingredients. >> sausage, ground beef, ground veal, parmesan cheese, onion, oil, and chicken stock. >> if you don't have the long grain, could you substitute? >> easily. >> i sauteed some of our sausage. i'm going to put in onion. i'm going to put a little bit of ground beef. we're going to saute this off. you understand that? >> yes, sir. >> a little veal. salt and pepper. a dash. we're going to let this saute down and crumble up. this is eventually what it's going to look like. you have sausage, veal, ground beef. you're going to let it cool. you're going to do your long
