microclimate weather alert. right now at 4:30, nbc bay area issuing a microclimate weather alert. the radar lit up, the roads wet. take it easy as you head out the door. lots of people heading out shopping or maybe coming back from some celebrating. slick roads out there. not a good scene i saw in some areas. we've got teams out on the road. also in those stores, it is black friday, as you prepare to head out the door, if that's where you're headed. maybe you have company in town. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm, go dp i'm, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew, in for marcus washington, who has the day off.

we have vianey with our weather. >> our mobile doppler radar is picking up good amounts of rainfall and just as we predicted the heaviest of the rainfall is falling off to the north bay. you could see where the pockets of yellow near the sacramento area, those typically mean heavier downpours. lot of green near santa rosa, va vacaville and novato area and also in concord. if i zoom in toward the san francisco area, hayward not catching a lot of rain but expect to see some rain within the next couple of minutes. down through the san jose area typical rain shower pattern there. we're going to continue to track these showers as we head into the next couple hours and give you a closer look at that. first a check on the roads with mike. >> slick roadways out there. this is the bay bridge toll plaza, a few drops on the lens and puddling and slicker conditions. that will be the case all around the bay. our road weather indeck, --

index, pacifica, daly city and out of the altamont pass no major problems and the flooding that had closures on 280 in san mateo last night have cleared. south bay we have a little flooding, surface streets only. back to you. >> thank you very much. this morning, the heavy rain is causing some problems on the roadways, keeping caltrans cruise busy. standing water in 101 in san rafael, it's hard to see in the big downpours but we're thankful the rain is here. >> we are glad we have the rain. i get wet, i'm happy. >> it helps the fired. cleared out the smoke. i love the rain. >> in san francisco, pier 39 families enjoyed a few musical tree lighting last night before the rain started coming down and the umbrellas went up. in the east bay, the wet weather is leaving behind a startling scene, part of the roof collapsed at joanne crafts

this best buy opened at 5:00 p.m. and has stayed consistently busy ever since. customers are scouring the shelves for all kinds of deals on electronics. one woman i talked to says she spent four hours here. >> it took me 45 minutes to find parking, 45 minutes to find parking, and then after that, just mayhem that they have inside, it's like a labyrinth, you know, go in, go out, follow the blue are rose and all that, and you're going to carry shopping carts or anything like that, so yeah, i finally collapsed on the floor. >> reporter: plenty of people have added an afternoon of shopping to their holiday tradition. >> already ate din we are the family and here for black friday. >> reporter: it's not even friday yet. >> i know, right? it's not friday, it's thursday but sales are going on right now, so i had to get in here real quick. >> reporter: there are some retailers that have massive black friday events at the great mall in milpitas. traffic is expected to be so busy the mill tee pass police

are blocking off some neighborhood streets to control traffic. there was already plenty of shopper there is. sergio quintana, "today in the bay". develop now a mall outside of birmingham, alabama, shut down this black friday after a deadly the shooing. one person was killed, two others injured, including a 12-year-old girl, hurt. police say the shooting happened after a fight broke out between two teenagers. one of the teens pulled out a gun and shot two others. when police arrived, an officer shot and killed the suspect. >> numerous other police officers were already on the scene working various assignments inside the galleria and outside. >> two teens are still in the hospital. right now, the search continues for victims remains in butte county. hundreds of people still missing following the camp fire. in paradise, families are hoping to get some kind of closure as the exact number of missing fluctuates. the rain complicating things tremendously. crews say the rain and wind make

wall street is said to open in the red this morning. it's a half day for traders with the markets closing at 1:00 p.m. eastern. on wednesday, the dow erased a 200-point gain to finish down one point as shares of apple came under pressure. trading volume is low today with many people away for the weekend. thanksgiving got off to a flying start. adobe says as of 5:00 p.m. eastern $1.75 billion was spent online, up 23% from last year. they expect thanksgiving to set a record and retailers on its network generated more than $250,000 in sales per minute. and stores are offering shoppers new ways to make getting in and getting out faster. walmart has a feature on its mobile app to make it easier to find an item's exact location in the store while kohl's mobile app will let customers take photos of items anywhere and

welcome back, everyone. taking a live look outside, wasn't the rain over the bay area refreshing? it was so needed to calm down so much of that smoke and just clean things up, and a nice view from the city by the bay this morning. already lights illuminatinillum 'tis the christmas season! let's kick off the song. >> thanksgiving a distant memory. >> way back before people were buying things for christmas. >> i do have a lot of leftover pie i must say.

>> we have a lot to talk about in weather, good morning. >> it is but things got a little bit better considering the winds peaked last night. the wind advisory was canceled for the north bay but i want to show you this image of satellite radar. it gives you a good idea of the second storm system that made its way in last night. it will impact us all day. here it is, kind of bringing in all of this moisture, but we have our very own storm ranger which is able to scan kind of at a lower elevation and gives us a better picture of what we're seeing right now on the ground. this is what it looks like using our storm ranger. we've got some showers moving through santa rosa right now, novato, concord and where it's green it means it's not as heavy as rainfall. if it was yellow or red that indicates the heavier downpours but all in all, if i move this around throughout the bay area, could you see hayward getting some showers, oakland getting showers, down through san mateo, but we have some spots that are still pretty dry, not pretty typical spot for rain, considering the rain showers for

san jose. any time we get rain in the south bay, we get excited but san jose don't expect to be dry all day. we still have the possibility of seeing some periods of on and off again showers as all of that moisture you saw just off the coast continues to trek on in. right now the -- sunnyvale not getting showers. couple of spotty showers here and there. overall, we are going to be seeing this rain continue all day long into possibly early saturday morning. our greatest areas for concern are the flash flood watches and the burn scars where there's potential for debris flow near the mendocino complex and camp fire. for sierra the heaviest of the snowfall six inches last night, some parts expecting an additional four to eight inches tonight and possibly into the weekend. as we head in towards tonight, we're going to keep the showers a few a.m. showers expected into early saturday morning, but i also want to you look ahead towards monday and into tuesday,

because next tuesday, we're tracking another system expected to make its way in, so here comes the rainy season, mike. >> all right, well make sure we're ready, make sure that you check those windshield wipers before you head out on any trips and the tire treads as well. right now the traffic flow very light. we have a couple of smaller crashes over castro valley and also in oakland. no major interruptions to these speed sensors, that's a great drive. be careful, the slick conditions continue. i saw say spinout 880, off-ramp at brokaw, two tow trucks had to get by on the shoulder. just fine toward the bay bridge, contra costa county no delays behind me. the road weather index shows you the blue, ponding and puddling through rio vista but the bridge is operating no problem and so are the rest of your bridges throughout the north bay and toward the east bay. heading into the north bay from the east bay, the richmond-san rafael bridge, wait for a second, yeah, no one's coming. that may be the case for the early morning commute, all around the bay, even the bay bridge we have a light volume of traffic.

the rain falls a little bit of couple drops here and there. the water kicking up will make visibility tough from time to time, and do watch for the flooding or at least some of the lanes, if you stay to the middle lanes of the freeway you have a better chance of keeping traction. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it is 4:48 right now. this holiday weekend, striking hotel workers not taking a break. marriott hotel workers have been on strike for 50 days, 2,500 employees in san francisco. marriott and its employees were not able to reach a deal this week. workers are prepared to be on strike as long as it takes to get a fair contract. workers reached contract agreements in oakland earlier this month. seeing as the holiday holiday shopping season is here we asked consumer investigator chris chmura for a quick refresher. >> we are not kidding around when we say we respond to lots

question is what aditiya is carrying in his hands. for the past two and a half years, these two have been working on a smart wildfire sensor. the idea very simply put is to use photography to determine just how much fuel for a wi wildfire like dry grass or dead trees there is in a certain location and combine it with wind, temperature and humidity to pinpoint where a wildfire is most likely to happen. >> we thought why not use the technology that we have in our generation in order to solve something that terrifies people so frequently. >> reporter: the prototype that aditiya and sunjana have been working on in this cupertino park uses a stationary cam camera, but their idea, they hope, is about to reach new tights by usiing drones and machine learning they anticipate
