tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  November 23, 2018 6:00am-7:00am PST

6:00 am
in san mateo. about 6:15 in redwood city, so we'll keep monitoring this, because again, there's an interesting change and i want to discuss that with you, but first, we send things over to mike. >> we have a traffic alert, vianey, the only real issue because of slicker roadways. we warn folks to be careful. most of the bay shows you the easy speed sensors. it's the north bay, coming southbound 101, things are really jamming up. it called for a traffic break, and also some slowing. you only have your fast lane open right now south 101 south of the robin williams tunnel. this will back stuff up and slow folks coming down to the golden gate bridge. chp we talked to them, my buddy sean at news desk, chp doesn't think it will take long. it's not a major crash but they have to tull it from the weeds and dirt on the side and clear. that's why they have all but one lane blocked. use caution. slick conditions around the area, slow down and i advise you doing whatever the reasons
6:01 am
require. no slowing through cocoa county toward the bay bridge and no backup at the bay bridge. you see the puddling and the wet roadways, that's the biggest concern but the traffic volume will build around midday, guys. those conditions we'll send it back to you. >> thank you, very much. we'll continue our live team coverage of the storm and some of the ponding on the roadways. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is standing about i in fremont. you drove around the bay this morning, what were you experiencing? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. we experienced some slick roadways, but as you can see, not much rain taking plais fremont, this is off of 880 southbound in fremont. there was reports of flooding at some point in that area a few hours ago, but that has since cleared up. as i showed you guys fremont not much rain we're experiencing at this point. north 101 in san rafael some
6:02 am
heavy rain as shoppers were doing some shopping after thanksgiving. obviously this rain causing some visibility issues for drivers and in general in the north bay, when we're out there. the area is prone to some flooding, but we did get a chance to speak to drivers in milpitas about the rainy conditions, with the incoming rainy conditions. here's what they had to say. >> we came from the richmond, california, right now. it was so scary. it was scary because the freeway was covered in rain and there was like at one point he was driving and the water just splashed all over us, kind of blinded him. >> as soon as it starts raining people act like they don't know how to drive. there are car accidents everywhere. i don't know, it's just bad. >> reporter: take you guys back out here live to mowery avenue, you have slick roadways. we'll keep an eye on conditions and have another update on "today in the bay" in the next half hour. we're live in fremont, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, pete, stay dry.
6:03 am
checking in with vianey as well, because how long will the rains stick around? >> pete will stay dry for a little bit longer than that system is moving very slow. that means for us, of course as expected, the higher elevations will get the majority of this rain, but i want to go over the 24-hour rainfall totals. this is the latest release by the national weather service. the highest rain totals seen over the ben lomond area, just over 2.5 inches and santa rosa an inch and san francisco airport a little over half an inch. hayward and half moon bay less than half an inch and near the san jose airport, not nearly a quarter, still very much welcome. over the next couple of hours we expect on and off again showers and catch a break kind of around noon and then it will dry out a little bit and pick right back up at about 6:00, so there's an interesting break in that rain pattern there, but the estimated rain totals right now are expected to be so far as
6:04 am
expected just a little over an inch again through the far northern areas and that includes the burn scars there. the reason thanksgiving night, friday night, this is all encompassing. now san jose down through this area expect to see also just a little over a quarter, so we'll get a couple more chances of seeing some accumulations down through the south bay, but because of that rain shadow, there's still less of a chance, so if you're looking at this map, pinpoint where your home is located, look at the color key, it gives you a good idea what you can expect within the next couple of hours as well. we'll be back with another update in a bit. >> thanks, vianey. the showers are not stopping some soggy shoppers from trudging through the mall to score some big bargains. >> "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live in livermore at the san francisco premium outlets, very popular. you took the drive out there,
6:05 am
probably not too much traffic, but what is surprising is all these people that are out there, they've been out there for hours, damian. >> reporter: i don't think they care if it rains or doesn't. it hasn't since 4:00 this morning but people are out here with smiles on their faces, at 4:00 this morning, some with eight or ten bags, they've been here since midnight last night, some with only one, came to window shop. they spent thanksgiving din we are their family, hopefully took a nap and came out here. give you a 180-degree view here, the south side of the premium outlet mall here in livermore and it's been nonstop all morning. the food court is also pretty popular. believe it or not, people are eating what you would normally eat at 6:00 p.m. they're eating that at 6:00 a.m. people are out here, look at this, see if i can walk over here, this lady has about one, two, three, four, five different bags. ma'am, can we ask you a quick
6:06 am
question? you have about five or six bags. how early did you get here and why? >> i got here at 6:00 and -- >> reporter: 6:00 p.m.? >> yes. it's been 12 hours and this was my first black friday, i wanted to experience it and it was fun and i'm tired now. >> reporter: was it worth it? >> totally. i enjoyed it. it could be my first and last time. >> reporter: without getting too personal, what's in the bag? must be some good bargains? >> yeah, i got really good discounts on clothing and shoes and, yes. >> reporter: are you ready to go home? >> oh, yeah. i'm waiting for my friends, they are just coming out. >> thank you very much. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: happy shopping. bags and bags full of clothes and jewelry and gifts and whatnot, and that's what folks are doing. they'll be here until about 10:00 when the mall closes here tonight. asking people to park at the college and take a shuttle over,
6:07 am
about seven shuttles every hour because park something veing is. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> are people shopping for themselves or for others? do you know? >> reporter: for whatever they can get, for them, themselves, and family members and whatnot, when you have eight or nine bags, it sounds like it's for family members. >> i would imagine, one for you and one for me. thanks so much. stay informed about the rain and snow in the sierra. download our free bay area app. real time data pours in from nbc bay area storm ranger, all in the palm of your hand and free exclusively on the nbc bay area app. in butte county the rain complicated the search for victims remains. hundreds of people still missing following the camp fire. sadly search teams found the remains of another person, bringing the death toll to 84 as you see on your screen.
6:08 am
flames have scorched more than 153,000 acres. the fire is now, however, 95% contained. we'll get a look at the new devastation in that area. this, in fact, is drone video that captured by a team of drone pilots, including some from fire departments across the bay area. they've been flying in neighborhoods above paradise, mapping out some of the destruction there, just street by street. this is a look along clark road, one of the main roads through paradise, and as you can see, homes, businesses, they're just gone. we put an interactive map on our website. you can see it at nbcbayarea.com. >> 6:08. happening today, the federal government is set to release a major report on climate change called volume two of the national climate assessment. climate central, which is a group of scientists and journalists, says it expects volume two to once again warn that the earth is warming, humans are the cause and the already serious impacts like our wildfires are only going to get worse. the new report should also have more of a regional focus as demand rises for more local information on risks and
6:09 am
consequences. congress mandated in the late '80s that this assessment be made. it's prepared every four years by the nation's top scientists from more than a dozen agencies it's going to be happening tonight at 5:30, macy's 29th annual great tree lighting ceremony union street in san francisco. >> 43,000 twinkling l.e.d. energy efficient lights and shining ornaments and mike inouye will join santa claus will light up the big tree in san jose for the christmas in the park tree lighting. >> better get there early. >> take your umbrella, your rain coat and probably going to be a little chilly because the temp also fall into the 50s and we're in california, 50s is freezing for us. storm ranger right now, look at that, it's still scanning some showers. you can see a couple popping up to the north bay, down through the portions of san francisco, but livermore nice and dry right now. san jose nice and dry. that doesn't mean they'll be dry
6:10 am
all day. i want to take you quickly to your daytime highs, expect periods of on and off again showers in through san jose, a high of about 62. palo alto 61. san francisco 60 and again, this is our daytime temperatures and we'll descend as we head toward the evening. maybe you want to wear some mittens, mike, gloves? >> how about fingered gloves, because they're cool. >> oh. >> looking over here, much better now. we had a burst of traffic that just came southbound 101 across the wet golden gate bridge. remember those slick conditions. that's why we raised that red flag as you're traveling south 101. this is the last red you'll see for this reason. southbound 101 i just got word all lanes have been cleared just south of the robin williams tunnel. already recovery out of marin, just slowing up toward the tunnel and once you pass by the earlier crash, that has cleared, then you're okay to the golden gate bridge, where we just saw again that burst of traffic recovering. slick roadways around the bay but green sensors. no major issues.
6:11 am
the bay bridge toll plaza doesn't have the metering lights on. i just saw this pop up right there, a little flooding indicated there, perhaps one of the offramps in san francisco. i will check on that and let you know if that is a problem for you. back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you. next and new at 6:11, something to consider before you buy online. the new way to shop for deals this black friday from the palm of your hand. plus -- >> 'tis the season to be buying and returning merchandise. and that doesn't always end so well. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. good friday morning. it is 6:14, we're tracking showers mainly up in the north bay, just north of the golden gate bridge. i want to show you temperatures as you head out the door. conditions in the 50s. 56 in san francisco, down through the south bay, 56. our daytime highs only expected to climb into the 60s. i'll break down how long these showers will be lasting in the bay area, coming up. and look over here toward 880, through oakland, we see about this volume all morning long, which is very light, past the coliseum, good lighting as well with the new street lights and we'll show what you we're shedding light on for the north bay, a change just came in. good morning, i am kate
6:15 am
rogers. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open in the red this morning. on wednesday, the dow erased the 200-point gain to finish down about one point as shares of apple came under pressure. trading volume is expected to be low today with many people away for the holiday weekend. the holiday shopping season is expected to be strong for online sales and thanksgiving got off to a flying start. adobe which tracks e-commerce said as of 5:00 p.m. yesterday $1.75 billion was spent online, up 23% from last year. adobe expects thanksgiving sales to hit a record $3.5 billion and shopify says at the peak on thursday, retailers on the network generated more than $250,000 in sales per minute. stores are also offering shoppers new ways to make getting in and out even faster. walmart has a feature on its mobile app to make it easier for you to find an item's exact location in the store.
6:16 am
kohl's mobile app will let customers take photos of items anywhere and find similar products in stores and several chains will also let you check out on the spot with a salesperson in the aisles. >> as long as you can track them down. more and more stores are doing that. >> kate, how is your holiday list going? are you done? >> she's done. >> she's out! >> she's so done with us. nbc bay area responds to a lot of viewers who have trouble returning merchandise. >> seeing as the holiday shopping season is here, we asked consumer investigator chris chmura for a quick refresher. >> we are not kidding around when we say we respond to lots of return hassles. we helped julie in oakland, andrew in sunnyvale, erin in san francisco, julie in san jose, jim in napa, greg in san mateo, lots of others. here's the thing. even though most stores have return policies, they are not written into state law. in fact, the attorney general says don't assume a store will
6:17 am
allow you to return an item if you change your mind. all right, let's do some q&a real quick here. can a store charge a restocking fee? the answer is yes. can they only allow exchanges not refunds? also yes. can they give you store credit instead of cash? yes. and can they require you to have an original receipt for a refund? also yes. you see a trend there? you need to figure out the return policy before you swipe your credit card. some stores will loosen their return policies around the holidays but not all and they don't have to. so please, check the rules. they should be posted in writing at the service desk, or printed on the back of your receipt. if you have trouble, let us know, go to nbcbayarea.com/responds or call us 888-996-tips. so the weekend is finally upon us. actually t has been for a while for some people who are off already and the rain is here, too. >> it is, and made its way in last night. lot of the north bay got the
6:18 am
majority of the rain and it's still sitting over the north bay, kind of beginning to move further down south, but overall, we're seeing, you could see right through vallejo, getting a little bit of rain, our storm ranger has been up and scanning. livermore is fairly dry. san jose is fairly dry. even san francisco and the downtown area is also pretty dry. if i zoom in, the areas getting the most of the rain is the richmond area. novato is getting showers in through the area. concord expect to see rain within the couple of minutes. through san ramon a couple of spotty showers in the higher elevation areas and these are showers. it's not extreme heavy downpours. as far as the winds go, we will still see the chance of breezy to windy conditions in the higher elevations and along the coast. the wind advisory that was originally set for the north bay expired last night. the winds peaked last night. be mindful in chico where the burn scars, we expect to see the flash flood watch in effect. they are expecting windy
6:19 am
conditions at 17 miles per hour right now. overall your microclimate highs for today in the 60s. we'll keep the showers into the afternoon. i really want to take you through the future hour by hour outlook. by is 1:00 a.m., a better chance of seeing showers through the san jose area through pleasant on, include the santa cruz mountains as well. if i fast forward to about 3:00, we get another line of heavier downpours in through napa, san rafael making its way toward san francisco and this continues to push southward. 7:00 p.m. showers pushing through palo alto and if i fast forward the time line, you can see moisture remains in through the early morning hours on saturday. that hour by hour outlook looks like it's periods where you might not be catching any rain at all and it starts sprinkling or drizzling again within the next couple of hours. so as far as your seven-day outlook goes, a few a.m. showers headed into tomorrow. sunday we dry out quite nicely for a beautiful, sunny clear day, same with monday. on tuesday, the clouds begin to
6:20 am
roll in and we might see rains mid morning with the rain off to the north for most inland areas but the winds will pick up as well. mike? >> vianey, radar just showed all that rain going down in san rafael. i want to show folks, this is the wet look we have from richmond side of that richmond to san rafael bridge. some drops and wet on the roadway and the light traffic. the traffic is not the issue. it's the conditions for that traffic and over where vianey is showing the radar activity, we see the road and weather conditions creeping toward 101, wet roads and a report from chp saying there was some flooding reported in your far outer lane southbound 101 at 580, right near the interchange, so again, the volume not a concern but the conditions are. so stay to the middle of the roadway, the higher lanes typically off of the crown there and they'll be a little bit drier. looking toward the recovery south through the robin williams tunnel, no problem after that crash was cleared. no major injuries there. look at that green sensors all around the bay, this is a great drive all across the bay.
6:21 am
on the peninsula, south 101 in toward mountain view out pavlo alto where our driver ethan our photographer ethan has been driving. this is a drive shot, an easy flow, we don't have wet roadways but they're damp in spots and from time to time we see the droplets kicking up with the cars in front of him. that's a good distance between him and the next vehicle, coming down to san jose. back to you. coming up next on "today in the bay," supposed to keep distance between thanksgiving and politics but president trump escalating a war of words with the chief justice of the supreme court. the san francisco connections, the controversy. you just heard all about the weather, but we're still watching it and of course we will all morning for you. live look in dublin. timing before you head out for a day of shopping, perhaps some fun, you're watching "today in the bay." stick around. lot more to come. it's 6:21. -and san francisco

6:25 am
not skipping a second helping of controversy this thanksgiving. >> he's doubling down on a new feud, this time with the chief justice of the united states supreme court. kristen welker has the story. >> reporter: i'm kristen welker is in west palm beach with the president, who gave thanks to members of the military. >> it's an honor to be with all of you. >> reporter: but things quickly turned political as mr. trump escalated his war of words with the judiciary and chief justice of the supreme court john roberts. >> i like him, i respect him, but i think we have to use some common sense. >> reporter: it all started when the president slammed san francisco's ninth circuit judge as an obama judge earlier this week for halting his attempts to crack down on those seeking asylum along the border, prompting roberts to counter, telling the associated press, "we do not have obama judges or trump judges, bush judges or clinton judges." president trump then fired back in a series of tweets, including this morning, "justice roberts can say what he wants.
6:26 am
our great law enforcement professionals must be allowed to do their job." stoking more controversy over saudi arabia, today, contradicting his own cia which assessed with a high degree of certainty that the saudi crowned prince ordered the killing of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. >> the cia doesn't say they did it. you can conclude maybe he did or maybe he didn't. >> reporter: and the president ignoring mounting bipartisan calls to hold the saudis responsible and to punish them. >> i hate the crime, i hate what's done. i hate the coverup, and i will tell you this, the crowned prince hates it more than i do. >> that was kristen welker reporting. next and new, brand new video of a terrible fire in contra costa county, burning someone's home overnight. we'll tell what you we know this morning. plus, look at all the rain coming down over the bay area. while you slept, new video as the storm pounded the bay area. we're also talking with
6:27 am
shoppers who decided to skip the sleep, spend money instead. what you need to know, before you go. you're watching "today in the bay." much-needed rain... still
6:28 am
6:29 am
falling across the bay area. right now at 6:30, much needed rain still falling across the bay area. this is a look at storm ranger tracking it for us. all that green means a lot of rain. that's the radar. it gives us the most precise real time weather data in california. and perhaps less scientific, just take a look out our
6:30 am
windows. here you go, live views from the san mateo bridge in san rafael, dublin and san jose. >> it's so nice to see, very refreshing. just like a lot of relatives maybe visiting as well, right? >> so refreshing. >> hope you had a great thanksgiving. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus is still celebrating the holiday, has the day off, as does kari. we have vianey checking your weather this morning. >> indeed. i know a lot of people were so amazed how we got to really enjoy that kind of first entire half of the thanksgiving morning with clear skies, not a cloud in sight, and then the clouds started rolling on in, and that's when you knew this rain was going to move in. this is what our starm rangorm s picking up. we've got this sitting on top of san bruno mountain. it's picking up some areas going into the stockton area. however, we're not in the clear, so even though you might not be seeing any rain right now through this area, we're
6:31 am
definitely expecting to get more as we head in toward the afternoon. hayward catching some showers. we were seeing this over san ramon, that trekked out to the east and plenty of the moisture behind it. i want to show you how your temperatures are doing today. it gives you a good idea of how much you need to bundle up. it's not necessarily going to be cold but it will be in the 60s. 61 degrees in palo alto, 62 for san jose and breezy along the coast and the north bay, so please keep that in mind. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> vianey, light roads as could you imagine, the day after thanksgiving. san jose we have much less traffic than we typically do. damp roadways but the skies you see some sunlight coming, great news. vianey showed you along the radar some of the rain coming. next time i'll look at the san mateo bridge. looked like hayward was getting hit for a few minutes and we've seen that traveling across, wet here toward 580 both directions, just east of those outlets, where damian gives us those reports. lot of traffic at the parking lots, so keep that in mind
6:32 am
today. over here, we did get that report of a flooding in san rafael for 101 at 580 as the rain cell moves through, vianey showed us for the north bay but an easy, light drive. the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights all morning. here is a little rain on the lens north of there at the richmond to san rafael 580 bridge. >> thank you, mike. >> 6:52. we continue our microclimate weather alert team coverage this morning. >> pete suratos is out in the drizzle. we had freeway closures last night into this morning. what have you been experiencing when you're driving around? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. we've seen some slick roadways driving in this morning. there were some freeway closures but all is clear. i want to show you guys we moved 880 southbound, you could see some, not many cars going right now but there were cars headed toward stevenson boulevard, dealing with the slick freeway as a result of the rain from overnight. we'll show you video from this morning, just a few short hours
6:33 am
ago southbound 880, some reports of flooding but rain coming down, but there was a point where the freeway was flooding in that area, but it did clear up not too long after. here is some video off of 101 north in san rafael, we saw a good amount, dump of rain there, causing visibility issues in that area due to the heavy rain and of course we've always reported on that area, prone to a good amount of flooding when that rain occurs. did you get a chan-- we spoke t drivers how they'll deal with the rainy continues. >> it's scary but it's busy. >> it's more dangerous, you know, but we need to drive with safety, i will be working today in the morning. >> reporter: safety first? >> oh yes, safety, any time. >> reporter: take you back out here live, you see cars making their move on the slick freeways, following that rain.
6:34 am
of course, we'll continue to keep an eye on the conditions and provide updates as they come in. always a good idea to slow down on the roads this morning. we're live in fremont, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> good advice, pete, thanks. if you're not one of the millions of people staying indoors on your computer to shop, you're one of the millions headed out to the stores to score some deals. >> people like to get up in the middle of the night and shop, that's what we're finding, especially damian trujillo, not the shopping part but found people like to get up in the middle of the night and shop. he's over at the san francisco premium outlets. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, people were here 12 hours ago, 6:00 p.m. during the middle of thanksgiving dinner. they decided to pack up and head over to the premium outlets here in livermore, here at this tommy hilfiger store. people have to form a line, there's so many inside that security needs to control the flow of traffic here. here is some more folks coming into the line right now. it's just been mayhem out here.
6:35 am
people getting here again late yesterday, late last night, and early this morning, trying to get their early shopping in, and police are asking people to park over at las pocitas college and take a shuttle, six or seven every hour taking people to and from the mall in livermore. it's been like this since we got here at 4:00 a.m., and people with eight bags, nine bags, ten bags. see if i can bother the young ladies quick. what time did you all get here and why so late or early? >> we get here -- >> reporter: how late yesterday? >> 9:00 p.m. >> reporter: 9:00 p.m. and you bought what in that time? what did you buy? clothes? >> yes, clothes, shoes. >> bags, wallets. >> reporter: and these are the smart ones, because they're standing underneath the umbrella because it's beginning to drizzle a little bit. they're making sure they remain dry for the duration. again, this is what you are
6:36 am
seeing throughout last night, throughout this morning, these people getting here early to make sure they get the early christmas shopping done, 32 days i'm told. i can't do the math but i'm told 32 days before christmas. back to you guys. >> have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night to shop like that for black friday? >> never ever. >> i did once on my way to work. >> reporter: i would never dream of it. >> no. >> it's only because i get up at 2:30 anyway, so i stopped by a store and bought some things but i don't think i would otherwise. >> i hate to sound like i'm showing off but i christmas shop throughout the year. i see something, that's perfect, it goes in the closet. >> you just got to remember. i don't mind doing that but i forget where i hide things. damian, we'll let you do a little shopping yourself. in the east bay, no shopping at joanne's fabric. the wet weather caused part of the roof to collapse, this is in dublin. rain pouring through the roof, soaking the fabric, flooding the aisles. employees are thankful nobody was inside at the time but they'll lose out on black friday
6:37 am
crowds because the city red sta tagged the store. no word on when it will reopen. to contra costa county, a new video showing flames ripping through a mobile home. fire crews were called to the concord mobile home park last night to try to put out this fire. they were eventually able to get it under control. the good news here, no one was hurt. we don't know how that fire started. in san lorenzo people were able to get out safely but unfortunately one man died yesterday afternoon. neighbors in the alameda county firefighters tried to save the man but the flames were too intense. the exact cause is unknown but it is not related to cooking. 6:37 on your holiday friday, this holiday weekend, striking hotel work eers will not take a break. marriott hotel workers have been on strike across the country for 50 days, including 2,500
6:38 am
employees in san francisco, demanding higher pay, better working conditions. marriott and its employees not able to reach a deal this week. workers are prepared to go on strike as long as it takes to get a fair contract. marriott workers in san jose and oakland reached contract agreements earlier this month. >> there are folks who are working or concerned about working, we'll keep an eye on the rest of the world here including the weather. folks on the roadways as well but it's very light, so contra costa county has not seen any problems this morning. we've seen a little puddling and ponding, that's the blue right here on our road weather index and green highlighted over there through the north bay, also means wet roadways. the flooding that was reported 101 at 580 just off the richmond to san rafael bridge has been cleared from the chp report. they found a lot of water but no flooded lanes so that's better news. smooth drive for the rest of the bay as we take a live look, we'd check the hayward side of the san mateo bridge. it doesn't look like a problem but you can clearly see the damp roadways and the radar is showing activity in this area so you could see a little less of
6:39 am
