>> and i'm laura garcia. everything got cleaned off from all of that rain. little bit of a break today. >> a little bit of a break and tomorrow morning we'll watch another system moving in, quickly, though, so you can still get out there for your saturday afternoon plans. look at storm ranger, mobile doppler radar, giving us a clean sweep this morning, before you step out the door. we're seeing a few clouds and once again the next storm system moving in from the pacific northwest will bring us some rain. we'll see mostly cloudy skies today. few peeks of sunshine here and there and especially for the north bay. we'll see the rain starting to move in later on tonight and sweeping through in the morning. we'll take a closer look at the time line coming up. mike, you're updating the two crashes. >> the two crashes from before. the first one, going down to one crash. the crash here by the san jose airport north 87, now cleared after a quick traffic break from taylor. we saw a little slowing about three minutes, and then it all cleared up. over here north 101, that moves smoothly but the woodside

off-ramp temporarily closed, the car that went off the roadway, looks like tow trucks will pull it out of the dirt and get it out of the area. 101 is not affected. it's the woodside off-ramp closed for a few minutes. the rest of the peninsula is fine. so is the east bay. contra costa county, you're at speed from highway 4 out of antioch, down across 24, through the account accoucaldecott tunny bridge. richmond side to the north has a little bit of puddling but just a couple. the roadway itself is dry. >> thanks, mike. bizarre news to tell you about, the breaking news in palo alto, as officers spot a driver asleep behind the wheel of his car, and that car is part of the story. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from palo alto with another story involving some bad choices, and self-driving cars. really interesting one here, kris. >> reporter: we don't know if this person was in autopilot mode but the tesla is being towed from this shell station

here in palo alto, this is where it was brought after a pursuit and an arrest by the redwood city chp. as we understand it from chp, the driver was arrested after officers allegedly spotted him asleep behind the wheel. officers tried to wake that driver up, but ultimately the only way they were able to stop that car was to put a patrol car in front of it to slow it down. officers believe this man was drunk, and it is not the first time chp officers have had to arrest someone in a car that had self-driving capability or autopilot. we do not know at this point if that driver was in autopilot mode in his tesla, but that part is under investigation. however, this did happen before. in august, a monterey man was arrested after crashing his tesla into a san jose fire truck. he told officers that he thought his car was in autopilot. back in january, chp officers found a man passed out behind the wheel of his tesla on the

bay bridge, when he was arrested. he told officers he had put his car, his tesla into autopilot. he was arrested after officers found that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. again, we don't know if the driver of this particular tesla was in autopilot or self-driving mode but we know that driver is under arrest for drinking and driving, and is now headed to the jail. this tesla headed to the tow yard, because it is now a part of the evidence in this investigation. we'll keep asking questions this morning. we'll bring you more answers as we get them. in palo alto, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> very bizarre there, and a lot of questions to be asked, kris, thank you. more breaking news to tell you about this morning. if you are a starwood member, you want to listen up here. its potential massive data breach that may include the theft of credit card information. marriott saying someone accessed the database holding personal information of approximately 500 million guests. that hacker or hackers had

access to starwood network for some four years with access to phone numbers, emails and pa passport numbers. marriott cannot rule out the possibility of credit card numbers that were obtained. pete suratos is digging deeper into the story and will have a live report at 5:30. a new trade deal was signed. the world leaders in buenos aires for the g20 summit. here is "today in the bay's" tracie potts in washington with the very latest. >> reporter: president trump says he will not meet with russian leader vladimir putin in buenos aires this weekend, citing the conflict over ukraine, mr. trump suddenly canceled that meeting, hours after his former lawyer, michael cohen, pleaded guilty to lying to congress about the skyscraper they were planning to build in moscow. turns out they were still working on that during the campaign, and didn't scrap the project until the day the public

learned that russia hacked democrats' computer. >> michael cohen is lying and he's trying to get a reduced sentence for things that have nothing to do with me. >> reporter: he would it et cetera this morning that the trump tower deal was very legal and very cool, involving zero money and zero guarantees. >> why are all his closest associates being found guilty of lying about their ties to russia? >> reporter: cohen has met seven times with the russia special counsel team as late as last week. he already pleaded guilty to financial crimes and faces serious jail time. >> he should be prosecuted to the extent of the law. >> reporter: in argentina this morning, president trump laid out his agenda. >> we're going to be talking about lots of good things for arming t argentina, for the united states, including trade, including mull tear purchases. >> reporter: his growing trade war with china will be a major focus. tracie potts, nbc news,

washington. happening today, governor-elect gavin newsom is in mexico there to attend tomorrow's presidential inauguration. yesterday he visited an immigration detention center in the san diego area, along with a shelter for asylum seekers. he says the state has to do more to address the crisis at the border. >> my job is to be constructive. my job is to try to find ways to bring people to the table, and to address what legitimately can be described as a humanitarian crisis. >> newsom plans to discuss the migrant caravan when he meets one on one with the president-elect andreas manuel. i have to warn you here, the have you had yo we're about to show you is disturbing. they released it to help bring in one of those men. it shows what happened when a brawl spilled outside stone sports bar on november 17th.

one of the men just pushed that woman to the ground violently. the suspect turned himself in shortly after the incident, but a second man can be seen knocking the woman unconscious, after punching a bystander, and that suspect, who police identify as james faulkenberry, turned himself in last night. no word yet on the charges he may be facing. new this morning, a 16-year-old confesses to vandalizing a community center in rohnert park. look at the damage done. the front door of the golden ridge community center was pride open and inside covered with graffiti and broken glass. this happened earlier this month, after that center posted these photos of the damage, the teen's parents brought him to the police station, where he turned himself in. the 16-year-old was cited for vandalism. taking you outside now, a live look at the golden gate bridge, what a beautiful sight there. it's dry now, but another round of rain is headed our way this weekend, and before the next storm hits, the race is on to

clean up today. yesterday's storm hammered the bay area, leaving hundreds without power. gym's roof in santa rosa started leaking dozens of gallons of water, due to the rain. take a look at that. in oakland on peralta, a 30-foot portion of roof collapsed due to the rain. building officials say a defective rain spout is to blame. luckily, no one was hurt. clogged drains caused roads in san jose to flood. caltrans crews are in overdrive working to clear drains full of debris. >> we cleared them as best we could but there are so many leaves and so much litter out there, that is very easy for drains to get plugged up again. >> this power washing company is booked for the next six days straight as it works to clean gutters at homes across the bay area. i wish they had an opening. coming up at 5:30, we'll show you the flash flooding happening in the devastated camp fire zone as well and break down the manned tower evacuations under way in butte county. from the rain to the snow. this is what it looks like in

the sierra today. you see the snow on the side there. we'll take a look, this is one of the major roads headed there into tahoe, and that fresh snow is great for the slopes, but not fun for those drivers there. chains are required to get over donner summit there. the oner er oner it storm warn effect through tomorrow morning. anywhere headed there need to put the chains on and be prepared. >> as you can see from the current map and that live camera, they are doing a good job of clearing the roads, even as the snow tapers off for a little while, if you're driving to the sierra, it is a good time before the next round of snow moves in. getting you ready for your commute in the bay area, as you drive from antioch, we're going to see the temperatures there in the upper 40s. there may be a few wet spots on the roads but we are starting to dry out, and that will be the trend as we go through the day with the mix of sun and clouds. highs reaching into the mid-50s today and it's also a cool day in san jose, as you get the kids

out the door for school, it's low 50s, headed to the upper 50s by the last school bell. we head over to mike, you've been tracking the roads and the bridges. >> some folks are working late on this friday. we're getting started but the overnight crews scheduled to clear into the weekend. the roadways on either side of the water are just fine. out here as you leave the area, head toward the altamont and tracy and sacramento, stockton, sorry, two lanes blocked eastbound 580 approaching north flynn road there. we have westbound also your commute direction, while the construction crews are supposed to pick up paving work until 5:00 they might have to wait until that's cured. westbound commute down to 24, 23 minutes there. easy drive through the tub lin interchange which moves smoothly. guys, back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up, looking for holiday presents for a commuter in your family? how about this new b.a.r.t.

good morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall right now at 5:14, as you get ready to head out the tdoor. we go to the neighborhood of willow glen, where we're normally seeing the high temperatures at about 60 degrees, but we're going to stay just below that today as we dry out. there will be more showers hitting the roof early tomorrow morning. i'll be tracking that for you, coming up in less than five minutes. and our view of san rafael, much clearer and much drier than yesterday, an easy drive here. we'll talk about what your early longer drive looks like, and perhaps what you have to look forward to later. and a very happy friday to you. all eyes are on the g20 meeting in argentina with the hope

presidents trumps and xi can work out the beginning of a trade deal. facebook continues to be in the news, after revelations sheryl sandberg was directly involved in the effort to discredit billionaire george soros. soros has been critical of facebook and facebook confirmed sandberg asked staff to examine soros' financial dealings. this is not entirely out of the ordinary. if you think the person cred criticizing your company might have a financial interest in your company suffering, you might do that. that said, facebook has been involved in several embarrassing controversies and has attracted the attention of federal regulators. i th >> facebook was trying to unite the world and it succeeded twice. everybody pretty much, regardless of political persuasion, thought facebook was cool two years ago and now everybody hates facebook, doesn't matter if you're left or right, what the reasons are. >> "press here" airs this sunday

>> okay. >> some urge b.a.r.t. to make the toy available at stations other than lake merritt. >> what if they used the profits from the toys to improve the trains? >> clean the trains? >> it may be a good thing. >> hey, if that's your problem, of course, you're going to have something to say about that. >> you like it, being our traffic guy. >> i saw the tweet yesterday morning, oh, that's kind of cute. only lake merritt? >> a nice stocking stuffer. >> i like the stuffed train. >> let's work on getting one of those. >> if you're on your way out there, it's chilly this morning, and we are looking at temperatures as you get ready to head out the door in the upper 40s, low 50s, all across the bay area, and then as you're styling your hair, getting ready for the day, it is a humid morning. you need a little extra hair spray, but it will be partly to mostly cloudy, and breezy, as we go into the afternoon. storm ranger showing that we do not have a lot to track here. in fact, we are going to see our partly to mostly cloudy skies, and then as we go into the next couple of days, we get ready for

some more rain to move in, approaching from the north, as we go through the timing, here is a look at our hour-by-hour forecast, and could look like. we're seeing clearing into the afternoon at 3:00 and a mix of sun and clouds. for the north bay, we'll see some showers moving in around midnight. santa rosa could hear some of the rain hitting the roof there, shortly after 12:00, and then moving into the early morning hours. by saturday morning, we are seeing much of the bay area covered by rain, and this will be before a lot of people get up and head out for the day, and then still a slight chance of some quick-moving showers around noon. the rest of the day we'll start to dry out. the next coming system could bring us the potential of a quarter up to half of an inch of rain and we'll see another one moving in right behind that. on tuesday, we'll have a couple of days of a break in between, so as we look at the seven-day

forecast, a chance of early morning showers on saturday. sunday, monday dry. tuesday is when the rain returns. look at how cool the temperatures will be. the highs will only reach the low 50s. morning temperatures in the 40s, and for san francisco, also in the lower 50s next week. we'll be tracking more of that coming up and mike, you're looking at a smooth morning commute so far. >> but the two days looked similar for temperatures in and out of san francisco, my goodness. in through san jose, north 101 moves smoothly. drier roadways than yesterday. no problems or spinouts and no flooding. the rains had a chance to kind of clear out of the roadways, and that's a good drive. the crash cleared from 87 by san jose airport. the other crash over off of woodside, that off-ramp looks like it reopened without a problem. getting over here through the roadways, contra costa county, a smooth drive at speed. little slowing eastbound 24, and we typically see that right about this time every morning. i think there's either a few

fire-ravaged paradise unified school district will return to school on monday. welcome back. it's 5:24. students will return to school on monday. >> the district is securing three elementary schools that will house k through 5 students through the end of the school year, and once students return,

classrooms will be packed with supplies thanks to generous donations made to teachers after the deadly camp fire ripped through the community. people from across the country donated several items, including markers, glue, paint, and even the kleenex. photos of the items were posted on facebook, group color a classroom with kindness set up the collections and those donations there. it's cool just to see how many people from across the country saw the need and put in that effort. >> and it was started by a chico teacher that saw the need there, and i've been hearing so many stories of chico, different rival schools that bought the other, the team lost all their uniforms, so they bought the entire team uniforms before they played. isn't that cool? >> that is cool, so nice to see so many people come together, too. we need the kleenex when we see them, the tears start rolling down. >> very nice. 5:23. happening in oakland, the annual christmas tree lighting

rain and helping you make weekend plans coming up in about seven minutes. mike, looks like a nice friday commute. >> we have friday light at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights just turned on a few minutes ago and we're looking at the fast track lanes. the cash lanes are doing better. as i advise most fridays, bring cash, it might help you get through faster. over there look at the flags flapping, they have a breeze in. chp did say there was gusty conditions at times across the span. we haven't heard any other problems about he sides that warning from chp. smooth drive in toward san francisco. remember as we get toward the end of the year, midday and the evenings into and out of san francisco, on the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge, get really crowded, folks headed toward there, they have the lights going on all over the city and all over the bay. so beautiful for so many cities. right now we have a beautiful drive as well, these green lights in motion, that's our speed sensors. no problems right now. marcus, back to you. >> 5:31 for you right now. >> breaking news to tell you about this morning, it could affect you and your family.

massive data breach at marriott starwood. pete suratos is live for us from the marriott in san francisco, and pete, this is going to be a bad news for a lot of the starwood rewards members. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, marcus. it looks like there's hundreds of millions that are affected about i this. if you are a member of the sta a rwood reservation database including the marriott in san francisco. i went on the marriott website, the data breach may have began as early as 2014, but let's tell you guys what we know at this hour. up to 500 million people may have been affected by this, talking about guests across the starwood hotels, talking about guests at marriott, sheraton, the st. regis or any of the w. properties with the starwood hotels. marriott said they were alerted back in september, saying the breach was into the starwood

guest reservation database. of the 500 million, about 327 million of those guests, when it comes to the breach, it may have included their name, mailing address and even their passport numbers. here is the big thing that we're learning about this. credit card info may have been taken as well. marriott says that information was encrypted but they're not ruling anything out at this point. now, i was going to show you a statement that we pulled from the marriott website, from the president and ceo. you can see that full statement there with the ceo. basically saying they are regretting this incident and doing everything to support the guests at this time and they want to be better on this issue moving forward. now, when it comes to what they're doing for guesses, they're sending the affected guests with email on what they can do. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, pete. 5:33 right now. new this morning, romaine can

return to your refrigerator. also new, the federal government establishing a new guideline so you know romaine lettuce is safe. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the east bay with what that entails. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, laura. if you're like many people, you haven't had romaine lettuce in your refrigerator since before thanksgiving. the romaine could soon be returning to your crisper, the fda along with producers, distributors, growers of the lettuce have agreed on labeling requirement that will list where the lettuce is coming from, and when it was harvested, that way you know when you buy the lettuce, it's not contaminated. look at your tv screen, you'll recall that last week, the fda said that all romaine lettuce nationwide was unsafe because of an e. coli outbreak that sickened at least 32 people in 11 states. the fda narrowed that outbreak and unsafe lettuce to growing regions on california's northern and central coast.

put this xwragraphic together, namely six counties. the closest to us santa cruz and monterey, also included san louis obispo, santa barbara. you'll know your lettuce should be safe to eat. back out here live, as a result, because the romaine lettuce sales are nonexistent or have been, there's been a spike in the sales of iceberg lettuce. if i could only remember what the percentage was -- oh, here we go, a week-old lettuce here, it's 168% spike in the price of iceberg lettuce since this e. coli outbreak. they come in cartons of 24, before the outbreak it was 21 bucks, now more than double like $46. one reason i'm keeping my voice down is because i don't know the people who live here, and if they hear me and wake up and wonder what i'm doing in the fridge and there will be a call

working to clear drains full of that be -- debris. yesterday's heavy rains caused flash flooding and mudslides, a lot of the same people recently lost their homes and endured day-long evacuation orders. >> some of so of the rescues were a dynamic water rescue, a vehicle was swept off the roadway, crews had to get people out of the vehicles and get them back to safety. >> the evacuation orders were lifted last night but there are already concerns about the next storm moving in over the weekend. a liyft driver is accused o disturbing assault in his car of a female passenger. it happened saturday night on the peninsula. prosecutors say the victim and her friend fell asleep on the way home from san francisco. she later awoke to find the suspect, the 32-year-old,

assaulting her. she screamed enough to wake her friend, and they called 911. the driver is scheduled to appear in court next week. this weekend, the san jose police department hosting a gun buy-back. police chief eddie garcia and mayor li yoorall licciardo will event. san jose museum and textiles will give out quilts. the gun buy-back is held at the san jose police department substation on great oaks parkway. and happening tomorrow, we'll have a lot of things here, a big game at memorial stadium there. >> cal and stanford. >> yes, better late than never on this one. they had to cancel the game before. >> yes, this is two weeks after they postponed that due to air quality, that was the reason there, from the butte wildfire. the game is played at cal's memorial stadium. kickoff is at high noon there. so it should be a good game. >> always a big rivalry here in

the bay area. big bay area football weekend kicks off tonight when the pac-12 championship takes place at levi stadium. washington facing future -- utah. the winner receives a berth in the rose bowl. kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. i always wanted to go to the rose parade. z>> those bowls we are often no in our own stadium for the rose bowl. looking over toward the bay bridge, not far from berkeley, where they're going to play that game. we're looking, you can take mass transit to berkeley. that might be an easier route. we have the fast track lanes. the cash lanes are fill in pretty quickly but only a mid parking lot for the lanes off to the left approach. those are the ones closest to us. smooth drive all over contra costa county. we have a little slowing eastbound 24, a little concern, but no work scheduled there.

santa rosa, we're at 93% of normal. we are almost there. also in san francisco, measuring close to four inches of rain. we are closer to normal. oakland, that rain that we had yesterday really helping to catch us up, bringing us up to 80% of normal, with three inches of rain, and livermore. so far, we've had an inch and a half, a little bit more than that, so we are a little more than half of the way there. mountain view, we could do better, we're at 50% of normal, and for san jose, we've had an inch, almost two inches of rain, and we're at 81% of normal. as you get ready to head out the door this morning, we have some upper 50s at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station by later this morning, into the afternoon. as you're getting started, if you need a nice warm jacket or a sweater, but today you can ditch the rain boots and maybe wear your dress shoes and tomorrow pulling the boots back out, as we get ready for more rain that will start for the north bay, shortly after midnight. santa rosa seeing showers moving through. the rest of the bay from the

east bay to the south bay to the peninsula, hearing that rain hitting the roof at about 6:00 to 7:00 in the morning. by noon, we're seeing a lot of it starting to clear out. by 5:00, skies are all clear. this will be a fairly quick-moving cold front and could bring us the potential of about a quarter to maybe a half inch of rain across the bay area. looking at those showers, mostly during the morning for tomorrow, and then sunday, all dry, it's going to be cool after this system moves through, especially for the start of next week. upper 30s and low 40s for those morning temperatures, and highs in the low 50s from san francisco to the inland areas. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, look at the drier roads this morning. >> drier for drivers. this is good. we are looking at slowing northbound 101, that first burst of traffic happened right when we expect it to. there you go, just before 6:00, about quarter to 6:00, 5:40 is when we see more traffic hit 101 at 680. right here on the map, right there heading up toward the shield. now it's starting to calm down after the first burst and we

also have a crash reported in san jose north 280, just past that 87 interchange. car reportedly hit the center divide and spun around. chp will check on them. be careful if that is your route for the next few minutes out of downtown, checking out that crash. meanwhile, looking at the rest of the bay, eastbound 580, getting out of the area, that is slow right now, because of paving work. we do have one lane open, and that's able to handle the counter commute direction right now. the commute here through contra costa county, and over toward the about be been moving smoothly. the bay bridge metering lights are on. you saw them add one more there, slowing until you get to the inle million and just i metering lights and the incline. eastbound 80 into vacaville, dixon out of the fairfield area, keep that in mind. folks are eager to get over there toward the new snow. right now they're checking for chains. overnight cold and possibly ice in the area. richmond to san rafael bridge, one puddle. count it, they're avoiding it.
