6:00 am
a very good morning to you, and thanks so much for joining us. dry day aed haheahead, which is. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike inouye, the commute should be better this morning, but first we start out with meteorologist kari hall looking at the nice, clear day. >> nice and clear and it's going to stay cool today with upper 50s. here is a live look outside at 880 and fremont. everything is looking much better this morning for your drive, and some low 50s to start out. upper 50s for the afternoon, and looking at storm ranger showing nowhere in the bay area are we seeing rain, yet, but there will be another storm system moving in. i'll track that for you and help make some weekend plans coming up. mike has an update on the crash in san jose. >> kari, we're talking about northbound 280 as you head up around bird. we had that report of a crash, a car hit the center divide and was seen spinning around. that's the last we heard. chp got on scene and said no major injuries in there. they're clearing up this crash here, so there will be activity
6:01 am
just north of downtown on northbound 280, and 101 shows a little slowing traditionally past the 680 interchange, holding steady but clear by the time we get to alum rock. the rest of the bay shows a great drive, eastbound 580 still shows some slowing getting over toward the altamont pass. the paving work still has to cure, and over here we don't need to cure. we have a 17-minute drive from highway 4 to the bay bridge. the metering lights are on but it's friday, lighter for that east shore freeway. >> thanks, mike. breaking news to tell you about, a bizarre arrest in palo alto as officers spot a driver asleep behind the wheel of his car and that car is part of the story. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from palo alto this morning with a unique way that officers had to jump into action. >> reporter: yes, we're talking about a tesla in this story and the reason that's relevant is because this could be the first pursuit of a chp officer -- rather the first chp pursuit of
6:02 am
a self-driving car in autopilot, maybe. we'll get to that part in a moment. according to the redwood city chp, officers spotted that driver looking asleep behind the wheel, going about 70 miles an hour on highway 101 south, near whipple. officers tried to stop the driver, but he didn't pull over, so officers eventually had to pull a chp cruiser in front of the tesla, to slow the tesla down to a stop. that driver, 45-year-old man from los altos failed a field sobriety test and was arrested on dui charges. the big question now is, whether that driver was using tesla's autopilot mode. if he was, it would be the first time a drunk driver tried to use autopilot as a designated driver. rather it would not be the first time. in august, a monterey man was arrested after crashing his tesla into a san jose fire truck. he told officers that he thought he had autopilot on. back in january, chp officers found a man passed out behind
6:03 am
the wheel of his tesla on the bay bridge, when he was arrested for dui, he told officers he thought his car was in autopilot. his blood alcohol consent level was more th -- content level was more than twice the legal limit. we don't know whether he was in autopilot at that time but last month tesla pulled the full autopilot option off of its menu. elon musk saying at the time on twitter, it was too confusing for drivers, so the investigation likely will be a lengthy one. in palo alto, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to follow this one. more breaking news on this friday morning, if you are a marriott starwood member, listen to this. potentially massive data breach that may include theft of credit card information, passport numbers, a lot. someone accessed the database

rain as early as the early morning hours for the north bay. as we go through the time line, most of the day we'll be mostly sunny and turning partly cloudy this evening, and then by 1:00 in the morning, we're seeing some of the showers moving into santa rosa, as well as the north bay, and working its way into san francisco, oakland, the tri valley, and down to the south bay by about 6:00 in the morning, so we are going to see this passing by at a couple of quick waves, and this will be a cold front that will bring in some much cooler air to start out next week. so we'll get a look at the seven-day forecast, and just a few minutes, mike gets you a look out the door at a better commute. >> much calmer and drier than yesterday. it's friday and no rain friday and so we see just mild, mild slowing here in san jose north 101, a little slowing from about 680 all the way up toward the airport, that's sjc. little more build for santa clara, just showing up here. over on the peninsula side, southbound 101 at woodside,

through the area now and a little bit later. a very happy friday to you. all eyes are on the g20 meeting in argentina, with hopes presidents trump and xi can work out the beginning of a trade deal. san jose's adobe dipped after a huge run-up yesterday. facebook continues to be in the news, after revelations sheryl sandberg was directly involved in the effort to discredit billionaire george soros. soros has been critical of facebook and facebook confirmed sandberg asked staff to examine soros' financial dealings. this is not entirely out of the ordinary. if you think the person criticizing your company might have a financial interest in your company suffering, you might do that. that said, facebook has been involved in several embarrassing controversies and has attracted the attention of federal regulators. i put the problems to my panel of experts on "press here."
6:15 am
>> facebook was trying to unite the world and it succeeded twice. everybody pretty much, regardless of political persuasion, thought facebook was cool two years ago and now everybody hates facebook, doesn't matter if you're left or right, what the reasons are. >> "press here" airs this sunday morning at 9:00 after "meet the press." i mentioned yesterday, we're tracking the prices of some popular gifts this holiday season, to see if black friday really is the right time to buy or should we have waited? yesterday we took a look at jewelry and the instapot, both are very popular gifts. i have sort of all four gifts that we're going to look at them. jewelry on the spot on the left side of the screen, next is baby alive and sue bead machine. sue bead is normally $99, black friday $64. 99, right now it's $64. you will save a buck by not getting out black friday. baby alive half off prices at

target and kohl's black friday but look at that price, about the same as it is now. in both cases, you can't have to get out at o'dark thirty to get a deal. you can still get the deal now. we'll continue to track prices as we move through the holiday season, hanukkah just around the corner, christmas coming soon, to see if they go back up or a couple go lower. >> i hope lower. >> supply and demand, too. sometimes it's like i got to get it. >> the baby alive might be cheap but you might not be able to find it. >> exactly. new this morning, b.a.r.t. is selling a new toy train car, just in time for the holidays. it is only available at the lake merritt station, costs $10. bay area transit agent made that announcement on twitter and not everyone is really into this gift idea. several other twitter users responded to b.a.r.t.'s post bringing up topics like broken escalators, dirty train cars, late trains. some asking about the stuffed toy train, what it smells like.
6:17 am
some urge b.a.r.t. to make the toy available at stations other than lake merritt. >> those are great toy ideas now. next they'll come out with what, the broken escalator? >> they could. you know, a piece of the 101 or something. you could get a bay bridge or golden gate bridge key chain. >> collector's eye temitem. >> bay area favorite. >> the weather might be a favorite for a lot of people, dealing with the rain. >> we've had rain and we're going to see some cool weather, dry all day today, and then a little bit more rain tomorrow. we'll track that. as we get out the door this morning, some upper 40s and low 50s. nice start to the day, as we dry out and you're getting ready this morning. is it a frizzy hair day? your frizz factor forecast say little bit of a light hair spray and get on out the door, as we are going to start out humid and start to see conditions drying out. we are tracking that next storm system. here it is on satellite imagery. we can see the swirls of clouds of rain starting to move into the pacific northwest, and even some of that light rain,
6:18 am
starting to reach into the far northwestern corner of the state. in the north bay, we're going to start to see that rain moving in shortly after midnight. here we are at 1:00 in the morning, we see the rain in santa rosa and ukiah, making it into san francisco, the peninsula, parts of the east bay and down to the south bay at 6:00 in the morning. so this will be an early round of rain that moves fairly quickly at noon. we're starting to see that activity tapering off as the cold front sweeps on through, and for the rest of the day, our rain chances will be decreasing. how much will this bring us? we look at a quarter to half an inch across much of the bay area. quick one and done and this brings in additional snow for the sierra. that's a live look at squaw valley. it is beautiful and today is a pretty good day to travel, because the next round of snow that falls tomorrow could bring some additional snowfall totals, up to about ten inches in kingvale. this system for tomorrow, and the next one will be moving in

most of the rain will be clearing by the afternoon, and it's going to be cool and breezy, highs in the upper 50s. on saturday, across the bay area, we're looking at highs around 55 degrees, and the chance of rain through about noon, early afternoon, for the south bay, and then as we look at our sunday forecast, it's all clear. it will be breezy and cool with highs around 56 degrees. tonight, jack london square, lighting up the christmas tree. it will be nice weather for getting some hot chocolate and going there and enjoying the festivities. it will be dropping down into the low 50s by 7:00, and then all day on saturday or any day for that matter, we have christmas in the park in downtown san jose. tomorrow is looking good for the afternoon through evening hours, as it will be chilly there as well, and partly cloudy skies, and then if you want to wrap up the weekend in san francisco, going ice skating, expect those high temperatures only to reach about 53 degrees, and cooling down as we go into the evening. if the sierra is in your weekend plans, look at how beautiful it
