majority of the tri-valley and east bay is getting a lot of those showers that were pushing through overnight of the you can see on our satellite radar within the past couple of hours, this showcases how that rain pushes through portions of san francisco, but this is what our current satellite stormranger is looking like. you can see a couple showers in through san francisco, but heavy, heavy rain in through san ra rone and the livermore area. san jose right now taking a break from the rain but we've got light showers that push through palo alto, los gatos right now which means that line of shower you see could make its way over toward san jose, so still tracking those showers to remain on and off over the next couple of hours. i'll take you thorough that timeline and let you know when the rain is supposed to make an exit. >> i need a break in the rain so

18th birthday and became its youngest pilot during world war ii. winning the distinguished flying cross after being shot down over the pacific ocean. following the war, bush married barbara pierce, entered yale university and after graduating moved his young family to texas where he was elected to the house of representatives but lost two bids to be u.s. senator. he did, however, succeed in several high level appointments including director of the cia. >> we want bush! >> reporter: following the failed effort at the republican nomination in 1980, he was named ronald reagan's running mate and in 1988 bush won the presidency but a faltering economy shook american faith in bush that led to losing re-election in 1992 to bill clinton. bush then headed back to houston devoting time to his presidential library and staying active, even parachuting from an

airplane on his birthdays. he saw two sons become governors and he looked on as george w. became the 43rd president. they raised humanitarian aids for victims of the tsunami in 2004 and in 2005 for hurricane katrina. in 2010, president obama honored bush with the presidential medal of freedom for a life of service to his country that by that time spanned nearly seven decades. but the former president suffered heartbreak when barbara, his wife of 73 years passed away. he mourned with family, friends and former presidents. >> that was jessica aguirre for us this morning. one of bush's many sons, george w. bush broke the news saying in part, jeb, kneel, marvin and i are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years our dear dad has died. george h.w. bush was a man of

as they were with regular folks and that includes all members of the white house staff. we spoke with him by phone last night. >> you were family. you were invited in for a cup of cocoa and a holiday dinner. there was no one that was too small or no one that was too big to get personal attention and i will tell you, that's a quality of humanity that in this political environment is sorely lacking. >> the former president didn't visit the bay area often but one of his most memorable trips was made back in 1989, president bush visited san francisco following the earthquake. this is the photo of him from the "san francisco chronicle" where you can see him surveying the damage. we are still waiting to hear about funeral arrangements from bush's office, the 41st president is expected to lie in state in the u.s. capitol later this week and be honored in texas where he made his mark early in politics. be sure to stay with us for continuing coverage throughout the weekend as we learn more.

it is the first morning of december. here's a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. a wet morning out there for many of us. vianey arana says we'll have morning rain and by 11:00 a.m. things should start clearing out. clear tomorrow and monday, so maybe that will be your chance to go out and get your christmas tree. putting tesla technology to a test to make an arrest. police say alexander sammic fell asleep behind the wheel of his tesla. police had to pull a slow one to stop the high tech car. "today in the bay" has more on the unusual arrest. >> reporter: the man in this video is taking a field sobriety test for california highway patrol officers because they say they found him sleeping in the driver seat as his tesla model s was going 70 miles an hour on highway 101 in redwood city early friday morning. >> approximately 3:37, one of

our units is driving southbound on 101. >> reporter: chp says those officers couldn't get the tesla driver to pull over so they drove in front of him and started slowing the patrol car down. chp officers think the driver may have been using the tesla's autopilot feature because of what happened next. >> the car started slowing down behind it. >> reporter: other tesla owners know how that happens because they have autopilot too. it doesn't look like there was any front-end damage to the tesla when the vehicle was being towed away. a smokipokesperson for tesla wi not comment on the incident but the tesla drivers' autopilot features are not meant to replace the driver. the sleeping driver they arrested and charged on suspicion of dui is the vice chair of the planning commission

from sutro welcome back. its 7:15 on your saturday morning. here's a live look outside over san francisco. you can see the clouds there. lots of rain for the northern parts of the bay this morning. things should clear out but cool temperatures, 50 across the bay today. a north bay bank robber is on the loose. here's a photo of the bandit in

action. he is wanted for robbing a bank on thursday. according to police, he gave the teller a note and demanded money. this may not be his first heist. police say they recognize this same man and he may be connected to two other recent bank robberies. take a look if you can of this side by side comparison, the left, and the right, a san jose bank robbery earlier this month. you can see the similarities in the thief's hat, wig and jacket. the search is on for the person who vandalized a neighborhood christmas tree in a oakville neighborhood. they found the tree chopped up, painted on and practically destroyed. the person was caught right there on surveillance video. so far no arrests have been made. back to the weather now, some fresh powder is a happy sight for skiers and snowboarders and businesses in the tahoe area. we have a look at downtown trekky from last night. the sierra doesn't see heavy

snow in november but this year's been a little different with four or five feet and counting. "today in the bay's" sam brock is up there with what it means for resorts and local busines s businesses. >> its kicking off the winter. >> reporter: its the straw that stirs the drink of many tahoe based businesses, snow that gets people excited for the season and stoked about places like trucky on a friday night. >> its expensive. if you're coming here from europe to go skiing or if you're coming from new york to go skiing with your family, its a lot of money and so you have a choice whether you can go to colorado or utah or california. >> reporter: and don't think skiers like granville shasta don't discriminate when it comes to the good stuff newly arriving at squaw valley. >> everything's better on the mountain when there's snow on it. no comparison. >> when we have fresh snow like this and we groom it, its

phenomenal. its beautiful to ski on. >> reporter: public relations director notes that a good november snowfall can spark serious interest. >> we're in a strong spot right now of the we're seeing more and more bookings pick up. people need to see that natural snow. that's what gets them fired up. >> reporter: sam brock, nbc bay area news. what are the odds, sam, hit the slopes, like stayed up there overnight. >> you know what? we got to find these things out. >> we'll have to investigate. let's check in with our weekend forecast. >> its looking good for the slopes but we're still seeing wet roads. please be careful. we got that cold front sweeping through and that's bringing some pounding rain, at least a portion through the bay area. this is what san francisco looks like right now. i want you to notice its gusty out there. 26-miles-per-hour winds right now, gusting also pretty breezy in downtown san jose at about 48

degrees. they've got that nice christmas in the park set up. its a soggy morning but it should clear out by the afternoon. let me take you to the satellite radar right now. this is our overall satellite where you can see we have some showers push through. now a lot of that is through dublin. for that we're going to send it over to our stormranger it is scanning on top of the mountain. you can see the higher resolution really showcasing the heavier pockets of rain pushing in through san ramon. if i move it down towards portions of san jose, you can see we've got pockets here and there along 680. if you're driving through there, you'll catch the occasional or heavy downpour even along portions of 280 and los gatos. we are expecting a pretty breezy to windy day. if you've got any of that patio furniture, anything that could potentially fly away, you want to go ahead and either bring it

inside or tie it down pretty secure. santa rosa 26-miles-per-hour winds. we remain pretty breezy by 10:30. about 9:30 p.m., we're still going to keep those gusty conditions especially for the mountain tops and the higher elevation areas and into the north bay. san francisco remains breezy even down through san jose as well. things calm down overnight as that cold front makes its exit into early sunday morning and that's when we see a better conditions in terms of clearer skies and dryer conditions. your microclimate high for today is seasonal, nice and cool, only in the mid-50s topping out at about 56 degrees for san jose. 56 for oakland, 53 for san francisco and then again by the evening hours, we should begin to dry out. if you're going to be heading out to lake tahoe, though, remember to check the road conditions. i do believe chains are still required if you're driving up there. they're still expecting to see heavy downpours and also additional snowfall, upwards of

lot chillier because of the wind chill. look at the wind speeds. went gusting 26 miles per hour and if you're heading to christmas in the park in downtown san jose, well, the rain will move out by about mid-morning. we saw showers push on through with that cold front. look at 3:00 p.m. the temperatures will be in the 50s, but by 7:00 which is typically when i think its around the busiest, that's when i see the most people out there, its going to be in the 40s and still very cloudy. so i expect to see a lot of california beamies and overexaggerated coats because any time the temperatures fall below 70 we're out here freezing our butts off. you can see we got plenty of moisture still leftover. we got thunderstorms to our north. snow still falling in the sierra. if you had planned to head up to lake tahoe, please check those road conditions. i will take you through that timeline in 15 minutes. >> see you soon. he was a president, a war hero, a cia director, a vice

now to our other top story, that 7.0 earthquake that shook alaska yesterday. it created a huge crack in the earth. major roadways completely buckled. president trump has already approved an emergency declaration. the quake hit around 8:30 yesterday morning, about eight miles north of anchorage, alaska's most populus city. no deaths or injuries reported so far. its an unsettling reminder that the reality of a big quake, that big and powerful could strike here at home at any moment. "today in the bay's" ian cole has more on the aftermath in alaska. >> reporter: a highway shaken to shreds, impassable as seen from the governor's flyover as the earthquake hit alaska. >> we're no strangers, but each one brings its own separate challenges and this one was.

>> reporter: ktva captured the scene in a courtroom. children in schools hiding under their desks. former governor sarah palin posting this video of her parents home, the kitchen like many store shelves trashed. bottles splad on the ground. at the university of alaska, ceiling tiles rained down on a meeting. the chancellor there was born and raised in the bay area. she spoke with us by phone. >> it was quite trembler. it didn't take long for us to realize we needed to get down under the table. its so much more severe. it was a bigger shake. this earthquake here in anchorage was strong but it was more of a wave like motion and

it lasted for a long period of time. >> reporter: across alaska, so far no reports of any deaths. officials are crediting retrofitting after other earthquakes in the past. images of the destruction in alaska are stirring memories for some people here in the bay area. buckled highways and falling ceiling tiles. it looks a lot like the aftermath of san francisco's earthquake. that 6.9 event caused freeways to collapse, buildings to crumble and homes to burn. in san francisco, earthquake retrofits have been required on all soft story homes, those are building with garage on the ground floor and living areas on the upper floors. the usgs says there's a 72% chance of a significant earthquake hitting the bay area in the next 30 years. we posted a slide show posting an upclose look of the

and you realize you are the the hostess with the mostest. you know when you're at ross yes! yeah! that's yes for less. entertain in style all season long. it feels even better when you find it for less-at ross. yes for less. it is 7:45. welcome to december. we're starting it off on a bit of a rainy note right now in san francisco. this is our live cam. you can see those dark clouds. we had heavier rain push through. now what you're really going to feel is that wind gusting upwards of 26 miles an hour. this is what our radar looks like right now. you can see a lot of that moisture. we got some snow falling in the sierra. let's zoom it in and see where that rain is at right now. a lot of the heavier pockets trailing off toward the east, fremont area, but if he with now send it over to stormranger which is our red scan, its picking up that higher detail

now pushing through san ramon, portions through livermore and i-80. definitely expect to see moderate to heavy pockets on occasion as you're making your way through. we've got another line of showers pushing down through the fremont/palo alto area into los gatos, san jose not really catching a lot of that rain right now, as that cold front swept through overnight and into the early morning hours we're expecting the winds to linger and stick around, breezy to windy. look at santa rosa. san francisco 20 miles per hour and it'll even be windy down through the south bay as well. the winds will hang on all day long till about 10:00 p.m. you can see santa rosa still fairly strong, down through san jose as well. it'll rain pretty consistent into the afternoon. as far as the winds overnight, you can see they tame off as the cold front swept through by about 7:30 the winds won't be a factor. your microclimate highs for today will be in the 50s and

we're going to remain fairly cool. this is going to set us up for a week of mid-50s, low 50s but very, very cold overnight lows. again, if you're going to be heading out to the sierra, we do have that sierra warning up there because the conditions are still pretty dangerous. look at squaw creek lake tahoe. this is a live picture. this is what it looks like rite now in that area. definitely please make sure to drive safe. by 9:30 we'll still showers pushing through san jose, pleasanton, half moon bay, palo alto. if i take it to 11:00 a.m., you can see the majority of that rain clears out from the oakland/san francisco area but the cloud cover will very much linger. we'll get some occasional showers here and there through morgan hill till about 12:30 and we really see that rain clear out beyond that point. so after the mid-afternoon/late afternoon into the evening hours we should die out making way for a much drier sunday but still portions will see cloudy skies

federal a welcome back. now to one of the biggest data breaches in history. federal agents are investigating the marriott hotel chain. this comes after the hotel announce the a data hack into its reservation database. the hack may have been exposed personal information of up to 500 million guests. marriott says personal information, even passport numbers, addresses and credit card information may have been stolen. news of the attack caused the stock to fall nearly 6% yesterday. that data breach mirrors many other recent hack attacks but chris chmura found one significant difference. he joins us with that story. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. what stands out to me is that they got a treasure trove of information, the hackers got every ingredient they need for i.d. theft. there is good news, though. the response is different and may be better. when other companies have disclosed big data breaches they've typically given consumers like you free credit

monitoring services. credit monitoring gives you an alert that a thief has opened and account in your name. its helpful but too late to stop the crooks. starwood is giving guests something new, something we're going to call identity monitoring. they can sign up for a free service that basically alerts you if you're information is being bought or sold on the darkweb and that might allow you to quickly freeze your credit file and shutdown the thieves before they use your good name in bad faith. if you stayed at a starwood hotel like w, westin, sheraton, four points over the past few years, please consider registering for that free service. i have posted a link to it on my facebook page. we've also added it to our website, nbcbayarea.com/responds. back to you. >> thanks. it is 7:52, lockheed martin

is helping to pave the way to create super soldiers, the company is working on exo skeletons that fit over a soldier's uniform. its said to help the soldier carry heavier load of things without getting tired. the u.s. army is investing in that technology. the san jose police department is hosting a gun buyback this weekend. you drop off any unwanted weapon and get cash in return no questions asked. its happening from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the san jose police department substation on great oaks parkway. also today a new hospital is opening its doors to veterans in the south bay. the new v.a. outpatient clinic will cut the ribbon for its new facility this morning. we were able to get a first hand look at the new building which will replace the original v.a. hospital that was built back in the '90s. the new hospital is much larger and will featured improved
