site of the warehouse fire. >> plus, dangerous dining. a car slams into a south bay restaurant leaving customers injured. witnesses describe that frightening scene. >> first, rain about to make a return. before it gets here, people will be dealing with something else. zblfr the news starts right now. thank you for joining us. >> we're on with a special edition of nbc bay area news because this sunday night football. the bay area bunld willidling u tonight. a freeze warning is in effect. >> a live look over the toll plaza. rain right around the corner. we're here to explain it all. >> that's right, as you know, we don't have much cloud cover. we don't have that blanket to keep those temperatures warm. since we're experiencing the clear skies, we're track ag very cold overnight. the temperatures still okay. in the 40s and 50s. 40 degrees in santa rosa. we still have a couple of 50s in through hayward. as we head into the overnight hours, that's going to change in

community. >> coming home after almost a month of waiting and wondering. some campfire evacuees were finally able to see what is left. we're in butte county. >> a lot of anxiety in the air tonight. we're at a re-entry point. chp is here. the army national guard is here. only about a handful of residents have come through this area in the last hour or two going o. to go and see what is left of their homes. when they do, they show the id. then they pick up a safety kit. inside there are gloves, a mazz being and even hazard sunts suits. many residents said they were able to get an idea of what to see. but once they saw the homes or what was left reshgs alt s, rea. robert said his home was a pile of ashes and horrible to see. >> i mean, there's a lot of anxiety and almost excitement

district will use three elementary schools for kindergarten through fifth grade students, middle and high school students will be taught for now with online learning programs until a new site is set up next month. students will also be able to check in with their teachers at drop in centers at the chico mall. return of students considered to be a sign of hope for the community. it helps the kids and the educators and it helps their parents. because if they know they're children are in a safe place during the day while they're rebuilding their lives, that is a big help. >> some hope there. the district still expects to lose a third of the students because that's what happened in the north bay fires last year. count on us for continuing coverage from butte county. tune in tomorrow. we'll be there when the state september of schools will hold a news conference to mark the reopening of schools. today in the bay begins at

4:30 a.m. >> it was an emotional day in oakland. people honored the victims of the go ship fire two years later. 36 lives were lost that night. here is nbc bay area's christy smith. >> i loved her very much. >> she made the difficult decision to come by a memorial set up in front of the burned out warehouse. in oakland where her daughter donna kellog's name appears. >> i really didn't want to be here. but i felt like i was really important to be here. donna is among 36 people that died two years ago when the warehouse caught fire during an electronic dance party. >> it doesn't go away. it's still there. >> it just reminds us of jonathan. we miss him. >> ed said has a sad, difficult day. his son jonathan was a renowned deejay not performing that night. ed has since put his energy into a nonprofit vital arts.

>> what we're trying to do is honor the victims of the fire by providing safe, affordable housing where they can perform in spaces for artists. >> the mayor tweeted to day our community mourns the second anniversary of the fire. it claimed 36 beautiful lives f oakland breathes together. we remember together. and we heal together. the two defendants in the case are expected in court monday. they're expected to go to trial next spring after a plea was rejected. the judge felt derrick was not remorseful enough. families have attended hearings as the case continues to drag on. today in what was called a boom box procession was held in memory of the friends and family who died in the fire. as family members reflected on another year gone by and their loved ones. >> we would like to see changes taking place. >> in oakland, christy smith, nbc bay area news.

to another somber rep remembrance. today is three years since police officers shot and killed mario woods. his death led to community outrage and galvanized the black lives matter movement. one of the organization's founders was invited to speak about woods at glad memorial church. he was armed with a knife and under the influence of meth, wo woods was walk ago way from officers when he opened fire. they see it as an execution and will never stop seeking justice for woods and all victims of police violence. >> time to have the courage to really change what is happening with policing, change what is happening with criminal justice. stop treating policing as if it's a hands off issue. we all have to be involved in this. if they're public servants, we have to make sure they're supporting the public. >> the five officers involved in the killing would not face criminal charges. >> pan nick a restaurant as a car came barrelling inside

sending two people to the hospital. tonight we're hearing from witness who's rushed to help. nbc bay area is in san jose with more. >> we're told that both the driver and those two customers who had to be taken to the hospital were all regulars here. just imagine getting your lunch, sitting down to eat on the other side of the window when that car comes crashing through. crews are shoring up a wall that took a pretty big hit. it happened afternoon. witnesses say the driver of this lexus suv accidentally crashed into this panda express shatter ag wall of windows. >> we just heard a loud noise. i heard they were close. >> danny manages the pizza place next door came running. >> once i realized there was a car in, there i was scared. >> scared but relieved that no one was trapped. >> everyone was walking around and moving.

and we got the car. >> witnesses say two customers sitting near that window were hurt but had minor injuries. they were taken to the hospital to be checked out. police are investigating what happened. it appears the driver thought she was in reverse when she hit the gas. >> then panicked and tried to hit the break and put the foot down. >> the restaurant stayed open. customers calmly ate their meals. it it was a surprise for this couple making the usual sunday night beginner run. >> we like to eat here on sundays because we come here and get something to eat. but this time we saw a big hole in the windows. >> as can you see now, that window is all boarded up. that's what the repair crew left until they can finish the job tomorrow morning. the driver who they describe as an orlando woman did not go to the hospital but simply waited here for her daughter to get a

ride home. nbc bay area news. >> we have new video to show you of the aftermath of a grey hound bus fire. this is what is left of the bus after it shut down. they shut down all lanes for hours. they snarled traffic in that area. the chp says an engine fall function is believed to have caused the fire. seven passengers were onboard. amazingly, no one was hurt. >> richmond police spent part of the morning busting up a side show about 50 vehicles taking part in this one. more than 100 people showed up for the event. officers arrived and people started throwing tdebris the athem. two people taken into custody and the cars were impounded. side shows are common in the bay area with several local employments working to crack down on them. in september, 785 cars were

downtown san jose into offices, shops, and restaurants. it will be near the station that would eventually support more than 25,000 workers. proponents say it would contribute millions of dollars in tax revenue each year. the plan would add to traffic congestion and worsen the housing crisis. >> a show of support for asylum seekers at the border. dozens gathered for a protest of the alleged inhumane treatment. the group held signs, denounced the firing of tear gas and rubber bullets and made banners at san jose's city hall plaza. several of those at the rally are local religious leaders including a rabbi from temple emanuel in san jose. >> i'm disturbs by what is happening in our country and disturbed that families are broken apart and that we're okay with that. we're tear gassing children. to me this is the antithesis of what it is to be an american. >> several organizations teamed up to put on that he vent

including families belong together san jose. with the rain we have recently had in temperatures dropping life on the streets for those in need is tougher. blankets, sleeping bags, shoes, and other supplies were given out today at san jose's st. james park. items were given to 300 homeless people. there was also a hot meal. >> this is cold and we want to have no people sleeping on the streets. we want to make sure that they have enough warm clothes and shoes and things. and get through the season. >> this is the sixth year of the organizationers have given supplies at the park. they distribute food every sunday. >> we're talking earlier. i saw temperatures there in the 20s. upper 20s. still 20s and 30s. it's going to be cold. >> that's below freezing. anything below 32 is considered below freezing. that's why that freeze warning is in place. very timely for helping those that need it. as far as the current temperatures right now, as you

head out the door, the clear skies are making it feel even colder out. there we don't have the warm blanket of clouds. they act as a blanket to trap the heat w very clear skies. that's why it is chillier out there. it is 9:24. temperatures are in the 40s:we even have 50s on the map. i want to show what you it looks like right now. hayward 250 degrees. oakland, 46. concord, 47 degrees. and that freeze warning isn't s. in effect until tomorrow morning. so everything that you see highlighted in purple which is the north bay mountains in through the interior valleys, we're talking about sheltered valleys expected to be below freezing in some areas. that is going to mean patchy forecast. bring your pets inside. any pet that sleeps outside, it will be too cold. also your pipes and plants and, of course, check on each other. as the temperatures begin to dip, it expected to remain very cold even through the early morning hours. this is what you can expect.

29 and chillier spots in napa. santa rose yasha, 32. and some of the warmer spots but still cold is oakland at 41. down to the south bay, we'll be in the 30s for san jose at 38 degrees. and this is just the beginning of those cold temperatures. you saw that cold front sweeping yesterday. behind cold fronts, that's continuicly what happens. we see a drop in the temperatures. now let's talk about your highs for tomorrow. those temperatures will still be below seasonable. fairly cooler in some spots. topping out into the mid 50s for oakland. 56 degrees for san jose. the next chance of rain, let's give you a look ahead. off to the pacific right now. but it developing. and so far right now that time line looks like it's not only going to bring rain, it is going to bring additional snowfall to the sierra. they've already seen upwards of four inches or more -- four feet some some areas of accumulation. here is the next chance of rain. let me take you through the time line. can you see that rain moved in monday night and into tuesday.

evacuation orders in parts of the fire zone. people in the communities saw what was left of their homes h but those return who will have limited services and they are being advised not to use electric generators. it could impact utility crew that's are still working in the area. also from the fire zone, paradise students will go back to school tomorrow. nearly a month after the campfire destroyed their community. an estimated 5,000 students have been displaced. >> a sad and emotional day in oakland two day marks two years since the ghost ship warehouse fire. some of of the victims families visited the site. 36 people were killed when blames groek out broke out in t warehouse. oakla oakland grieves together. two men tag criminal charges. they're expected to go to trial in the spring after a judge rejected a plea deal. a frightening scene in san jose. a car barrels through a panda

tributes and remembrances to president george h.w. bush. head to our home page for our continuing coverage. we're following developing news out of washington, d.c., tonight. former fbi director james comey will will testify before the house judiciary committee on friday. he's expected to discuss the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mail and the russian election meddling. under an agreement reached today, comey will testify in private but the committee will give him a full transcript within 24 hours. comey can then make all or some of that transcript public and answer questions about the testimony. comey tweet the his reaction saying, greatful for a fair hearing from judge. hard to protect my rights without being in contempt which i don't believe in. so we'll sit in the dark. republicans agree i'm free to talk when done and transcript released in 24 hours. this is the closest i can get to public testimony. the cleanup continues in and around afrpg wrath, alaska, after friday's seven magnitude earth wake.

country's high waits. demonstrators are angry about rising taxes and the french president's leadership. they threw rocks that fired at cars and smashed windows and looted stores. police responded with tear gas and water cannons. >> new tonight, the kansas city chiefs played in oakland today against the raiders without one of their biggest stars. kareem hunt was cut on friday after video surfaced of him having an altercation with a woman. today he spoke to espn about the incident. >> i want to let the world know how sorry i am for my actions and, you know, it has been a tough time for me and i'm extremely embarrassed because of that video. >> hunt, one of the better running backs in the nfl is seen in this video exchanging worz with an unidentified woman and he pushes the woman. she thn hit him in the face and eventually hunt pushed the man that knocked her over. he is caught kicking the woman in the leg while these on the

ground. >> that person in that video did not deserve that. i didn't mean to hurt anybody or anything like that. it is really tough. it's tough because, like, i feel like i let a lot of people down. >> the incident happened back in february. the nfl reportedly never interviewed hunt about the february assault nor did they talk to the woman. the chiefs say they did speak to hunt but that he was not truthful. no charges have been filed in that case. sticking can pro football, the 49ers and raiders played meaningful games today. the games were only meaningful for to the teams they were playing against. >> here is dave feldman with a look at what is coming up in sports. >> a couple rivalry games for the bay area's football team today. plus, the 49ers face the seahawks and richard sherman guess to return home and the raiders take on the chiefs. that's not an easy task.

jose, 49 degrees. wind speed not a factor. this is san francisco. 52 degrees. they did hit a high of 57. as we inch closer in towards the overnight hours, that's where the concern is going to kick in and that's when our temperatures will significantly dip. right now though, we're still in the 40s and in santa rosa and napa. some upper 40s and low 50s. that cold weather alert expected to remain in effect which is pretty much much a freeze warning into tonight and into early tomorrow morning. when you wake up, you're going to get the frosty windshield going. you may have to warm up the car first. santa rosa is through napa. pretty much all of those wind sheltered valleys we're expect something areas of patchy fog. the temperatures will dip. some areas even expecting 20s. look at napa, 29 degrees. santa rose yasha 32 degrees. san jose, temperatures expected to drop down into the 30s. only 38 degrees. as we head in towards the

afternoon tomorrow, we're still expecting to see some mid 50s. so the temperatures will remain cool. we're expecting a dry day tomorrow for the most part. but as we head into the afternoon, we're tracking a system. before i get to that, let's talk about the day time highs. oakland, 55. san jose, 56. satellite and radar is showing us with very pretty good conditions over the bay area. we have an incoming system. so let's see what the hour by hour outlook is showing us right now. it's showing up rain moving in very late monday night. so for the most part monday is going to be dry. you don't have to worry about a monday morning commute being wet. early tuesday morning for napa, we're going to catch showers. if i take you all the way through 6:00 a.m., you can see the rain really moves n the rain returns on tuesday. hangs out on wednesday. and then kind of begins to clear out early thursday morning. we catch a slight break on friday. there is a weak system that is developing that could bring spotty showers on saturday. its next sunday we have a bigger system developing that could
