"early today" starts right now. good wednesday morning. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. today washington, d.c. will say its final good-bye to president george h.w. bush. a public funeral will be held this morning at 11:00 a.m. eastern at the national cathedral. among those expected to attend, president trump and first lady melania as well as the obamas, clintons, and carters. after the service, president bush's casket will be flown back to houston ahead of a second service tomorrow and burial at his presidential library. >> right now mourners continue to pay their respects at the capitol rotunda as president bush lies in state. adding to the thousands more who lined upong them, president bus service dog, sully, who had been with him since the summer. the w return to smithtown, new york, later this week for the rest of the holiday season. he will then move on to his next mission at walter reed medical center. in another touching tribute

filed tuesday, flynn met with mueller's team 19 times but cited few details. flynn previously pleaded guilty to lying about conversations with a leading russian diplomat during the presidential transition starting in 2016. among those reacting on capitol hill, democratic congressman adam schiff, who is likely to become chairman of the house intelligence committee in january. he tweeted, the recommendations reflect both the timeliness and significance of his help. that most of the details were redacted signals he has given far more than we or the president may know. president trump's outside attorney rudy giuliani tells nbc news he's not concerned anything flynn shared with the special counsel could implicate the president. in a phone interview, giuliani said there is a yiddish word that fits. they don't have bubkes. and in other developments, trump associate roger stone is refusing to testify or provide documents to the senate judiciary committee as requested, invoking his fifth amendment right against incriminat ionsy both congress

and the special counsel regarding whether trump aides knew of wikileaks' plans to publish democratic e-mails during the 2016 election. investors aren't sharing president trump's optimism on truce talks in the trade war with china. growing concerns over tariffs and signing of a slowing global economy cratered markets. the dow plunging nearly 800 points while other major indices fell more than 3%. after the sell-off, president trump doubling down on his tariff threat, saying, quote, we are either going to have a real deal with china or no deal at all. china does not want tariffs. nbc's tom costello has the latest. >> reporter: red down arrows on wall street and in americans' retirement and pension funds. the s&p 500 and nasdaq index both down 3%. investors focused on president trump's warning that if the 90-day trade war truce doesn't hold, he is a tariff man. at risk, billions of dollars in u.s. exports to china from agricultural products to cars to

construction equipment. while americans could pay more for household goods made in china. midday, the treasury secretary weighed in. >> i think the market is now in a wait and see, and the market's trying to figure out is there going to be a real deal at the end of 90 days or not? >> you've got stocks plunging on fears of slowing economic growth. >> reporter: among the hardest hit, bank stocks and big companies that do business in china, including boeing, caterpillar and apple. >> the markets dropped today on concerns that the global economy may be slowing. growth in the united states is doing fine right now, but over in china, there's clearly a slowdown. >> reporter: while treasury secretary mnuchin insists china has agreed to address more than 100 issues of concern, the lack of a signed deal or a concrete timetable has investors fearing the trade war could heat up again. >> tom costello, thank you for that report. top senators received a briefing they had been demanding from cia director gina haspel on the death of saudi journalist jamal khashoggi. after the meeting, senators bob

contamination has now been expanded. jbs tolleson is voluntarily recalling more than 12 million pounds of raw beef products at locations nation wieds. this follows an earlier recall of nearly 7 million pounds of ground beef. you can see the official recall list along with detailed safety precautions on the usda's website, www.fsis.usda.gov. we have another important recall to tell you about. this one, though, is for dog owners. the fda has issued a warning for as many as eight brands of dry dog food which they say contains excessive levels of vitamin d. nbc's ron allen has the latest advice for pet owners. >> reporter: the recall warns of potentially serious health problems for dogs. kidney failure, even death due to dangerous levels of vitamin d in dog food. as much as 70 times higher than considered safe. the fda recalling 12 products from eight brands of dry dog food with a wide range of

ingredients sold in various size bags. if your dog has too much vitamin d, what kind of symptoms would you see? >> just lethargy, kind of not feeling very well. loss of appetite. sometimes they can vomit or have constipation. >> reporter: the fda trying to figure out how such toxic amounts of vitamin d got into the dog food and warning that more may be added to the recall list. ron allen, nbc news, new york. there's good news for dog owners with furry friends frightened by loud noises. the fda has approved a new anti-anxiety drug that helps dogs suffering from noise aversion. it is given a few days before an expected noisy event like the fourth of july and is continued until the day has passed. the drug does come with a warning, though. in rare cases, it led to more aggressive behavior in pets. but, wow, how hopeful is that for so many pet owners? as far as the car horns and the things you can't expect, you got
