headed out the door, only reaching the mid-50s by noon and colder in dub lip, as you step out with upper 30s through about 6:00. we'll talk more about what's ahead for the weekend. mike, you're tracking a couple of crashes. >> most cleared from the roadway the last few minutes, minor fender benders. the freeway is open. here the santa cruz mountains highway 17 the off-ramp itself on to highway 9 will be affected by continued work. let me show you the video we got coming off that crash that happened overnight. looks like a big scene, firefighters there, a smoldering vehicle. no major injuries there. the car crashed into the tree. the person inside was taken away with some injuries and there's a light pole down with activity so we'll continue to follow that. 4:31. pet owners in one neighborhood are in fear of what is killing animals in the area. in gilroy, they're saying a

mountain lion is killing the pets and one woman says she's managed to get a picture of that big cat, but the biggest concern is when that picture was taken. >> as "today in the bay" sergio quintana reports, the big cat appears to be quite comfortable just roaming around. >> reporter: in the photo you can see the reflection of the young lion's eyes. next to it the carcass of a dead animal. >> just passed into our field and i could see our pet goat laying out in the field. >> reporter: pickles the goat is one of several of michelle's animals killed over the last few days. she also lost some of her prized rabbits, but her biggest concern is what time the big cat was caught on camera, 6:37 p.m. >> it's a very busy road for it to be coming out this early at night and so just kind of, i have four children and we were just at grandma's and it's starting getting dark, we need to leave because it's not safe. >> reporter: the mountain lion has been prowling around new

avenue and church avenue in rural gilroy. there are several small ranches in the area. neighbors are concerned. >> i've heard they've been coming down the creek, the mo mountain lions. church has a creek over this way, that's when i started getting concerned. to hear they're right here behind my house, that's another level. mud flows from heavy rain triggering evacuations in parts of southern california recently, scorched by wildfire. this is video from last night in lake elsnor. two feet of mud from the burned out fire zone. the same storm flooded roadways in parts of l.a. county. downtown l.a. received about two inches of rain yesterday, breaking its rainfall record for any december 6th day. that storm led to a lot of snow on the grapevine. caltrans has had to close both sides of interstate 5 during the day but everything reopened by last night. sacramento county leaders

are asking for financial help if and when the golden state killer case goes to trial. the string of crimes spans more than a decade, across six california counties. he will be tried in sacramento and the cause of the trial could balloon could $20 million. the county is asking the state to help shoulder that cost. 4:34. so far, no word from the fbi on why agents were seen raiding a small los altos business catering to children. on wednesday morning, a handful of fbi agents could be seen removing boxes from love bugs on a riverside. no one was arrested. the los altos town crier newspaper talked with the owner and she said the raid was a mistake. a follow-up in los altos, you can see two empty chairs on the panel during last night's planning commission meeting.

the reason one of the chairs was empty likely has to do with a recent high-profile dui arrest. alexander samick is a los altos city planner. one week ago chp arrested him after eventually stopping his tesla on highway 101. they believe he may have been asleep at the wheel with his car on autopilot. investigators so far though have not been able to confirm if that was the case. a controversial east oakland homeless camp has been cleared, but it did include some drama. few of the people living there refused to evacuate a shed. eventually police officers peacefully coaxed them out. the city workers dismantled that shed. a judge declared it illegal last night. city leaders said everyone living there did receive other shelter options. vets at an east bay wildlife hospital are talking about what they're calling an alarm willing trend. >> walnut creek's lindsay wildlife center is seeing a surge in the number of wild

animals they're getting in that have been shot. so far workers have treated 30 animals with gunshot wounds, which is double the normal amount. most of them are birds. many of them involved bb guns or pellet guns and unfortunately, most of them have to be euthanized. >> very recently we've had everything from a crow to a raven to a red tail hawk to a turkey vulture come in with indications someone shot it. >> hospital workers are wondering if people are shooting the animals on purpose as target practice or if this is some sort of nuisance issue. the center is reporting the cases to the department of fish and wildlife. coming up on "today in the bay," facebook adding a new feature that could be a win/win for business owners and the social media company. we'll break down what the addition is about. in the wake of general motors closing five american

degrees. a live look in san jose as you get dressed looking out the window, it is a chilly start, so you need a nice, warm coat with temperatures once again in the 30s and 40s. the rest of the day, some light, long sleeves will keep you comfortable. as we head up into the low 60s for the south bay. up to 63 in gilroy. for the east bay, 62 in walnut creek and oakland 59 degrees. we'll stay in the 50s at half moon bay, while we see some low 60s in palo alto and mostly upper 50s in san francisco. north bay reaching 62 in sonoma and in novato. as we get a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar giving us nothing going on right now, but then as i open up the view, we can track our next storm system that will start to move in as we head toward sunday, but we'll see the clouds well out and ahead of that. so this afternoon, looking dry, and as we go into tomorrow afternoon, also staying dry, but notice the shades of gray and white on here, indicating there

will be more cloud cover by tomorrow afternoon. don't expect to see as much sunshine. and then by late sunday evening, the rain starts to roll in from north to south, and then that may continue into early monday morning. so our rain chances moving in for the end of the weekend, early next week, we could have some wet roads as you head to work and we'll get some clearing with our temperatures, were ety much st -- pretty much staying through the 50s through the middle of next week. northbound 880 from high street where the coliseum is over here, a's and the with a arors play over there, a jam from high street up toward 23rd. what happened overnight, which is happening for the last year, they have construction going on or destruction of the overhead crossing there, and so what's happening now, what it looks like, they're getting ready to clear all lanes because we had access through the area overnight. they shut down traffic as they move equipment north 880 at 23rd

where traffic is held for a few seconds. if you need to get off on to city streets and get back on, you can do that. it's not a big, long alternate and 580 is not a problem at all. coming out of contra costa county the rest of the approach toward the bay bridge is fine and the construction should be clearing. there's a traffic break in oakland over the next few minutes. the south bay no problems. the east bay we have a new crash reported south of the san mateo bridge on southbound 880, so we'll track that through hayward. i'll give you detail once chp arrives. no problem for the transit agencies. caltrain does not have the weekend service north of broad way because of the electification project but today it's just fine. 4:48 now. case closed, on a serial arson investigation that spanned multiple cities in contra costa county. this is james bishop iii, and he was convicted this week for starting a series of fires mostly in parked cars overnight. the most dangerous and almost
