across this region, it's also all of the ice beneath all of the snow. that's caused thousands of accidents. back here on the ground, we can tell you that the south has seen snow before. but rarely do they see a storm just like this. this morning, the frozen fallout from a massive winter storm. impacting residents across the southeast, not accustomed to this kind of winter blast. >> i was kind of prepared. not quite for this much snow. >> reporter: states of emergency in virginia and north carolina. treacherous conditions bringing roads to a standstill. >> i stopped for the light and got stuck immediately. >> reporter: north carolina's governor calling in the national guard to help those stranded in the snow. the whiteout conditions triggering blackouts. power companies reporting outages affecting 400,000,

across georgia, north carolina, south carolina and virginia. over 1,700 cancellations. over 1,300 at north carolina airports alone. >> north carolina is in the cold, icy grip of a mammoth winter storm. >> reporter: residents of north carolina shocked at the speed and severity of the storm. >> we get a lot of snow here but not this much at once. it's a lot of snow. >> reporter: in greensboro, one of the hardest hit areas, road crews are overwhelmed. authorities are urging people to stay home after nearly 20 inches of snow fell in some areas. >> allow our public service workers to get the roads plowed and to get to the people who really need to be rescued. >> reporter: here's another live look from our drone here. the mayor in this city says the

city is not going to get up to its feet until about 10:00 a.m., because the roads are so dangerous. here on the ground there's several inches of snow in many areas. many people will be forced to dig out of situations like this when they can. it will be a treacherous day on the roads all across this region. guys, back to you. >> miguel, thank you. al is tracking where the storm has been and where it's headed. good morning. >> good morning. thank you for getting your first weather from us. 13 million people under winter weather advisories. the storm is moving out. snow back through knoxville, asheville, up into southern virginia and parts of north carolina. still seeing icy conditions. this will move out and leaving another inch or so. there will be another deep freeze tonight. whatever is on the ground, it's going to freeze. we have another system coming. another coast-to-coast. what's going on? we had a developing el nino. above-average ocean temperatures across the equator and that strengthens the pacific jet that makes for an active storm track

across the south. here comes another storm. this one comes in tuesday, bringing heavy snow and rain for the northeast. gusty wind and rain for the coast. as we move through the week, it dives to the south, getting caught in the tropical jet. then, on thursday, milder temperatures and melting snow, and we may see flooding for south carolina and north carolina and virginia. the difference with this one is, we got warm air in place. that means more severe weather possible. friday and saturday, look for airport delays from atlanta to the northeast, heavy rain and flooding. three weeks, three coast-to-coasters and we're not done yet. >> right in time for the holidays, too. al, thank you. this morning, the president could be facing new legal and political peril, accusations and court documents implicate the president in felony crimes and

that has some democrats again raising the prospect of impeachment. we'll start with kristen welker. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: this morning, a growing number of democrats are ramping up the rhetoric. rh. this morning, president trump on defense after tweeting overnight that his administration has accomplished more than any other u.s. administration in its first two, not even, years of existence. the strong claim follows explosive court filings released friday by special counsel robert mueller, and federal prosecutors in new york. in them, the new york prosecutors say president trump directed his former attorney, michael cohen, to commit two felonies, illegal hush money payments to porn star stormy daniels and former playmate, karen mcdougal to keep alleged affairs quiet. he was pressed about those payments over the weekend.

>> did you direct michael cohen to commit any -- >> no. no. no. >> reporter: but democrats are seizing on the revelations and the potential peril for the president. >> the president has now stepped into the same territory that ultimately led to president nixon resigning the office. >> there is nothing in the constitution that prohibits the president from being indicted. >> reporter: the chair of the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, says the president's legal troubles could intensify. >> he may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time. >> reporter: while some republicans stood by the president, others were more critical. >> no one is more important than our country and no one is held above the law. everyone should benefit from what presumptions the law has. >> reporter: and there are the alleged contacts with russia. in a separate filing, mueller's team says that in 2015, cohen conferred with individual-1, the president, about contacting the

russian government before gauging russia's interest in a meeting. that meeting never happened, but the filings also say as discussions about trump tower moscow gained steam in november 2015, cohen spoke with a russian national who promised the campaign political synergy, and synergy on a government level. president trump has consistently insisted. >> there was no collusion whatsoever. >> a big personnel announcement. chief of staff john kelly who said he would stay until 2020 will be gone by the end of the year. who could replace him? >> reporter: nick ayers was the it. 's initial pi -- president's initial pick, but he plans to return to his home in georgia and couldn't make the two-year commitment the president requested. that's according to sources familiar with those conversations. among those getting buzz, congressman mark meadows. he is chair of the house freedom

caucus. mick mulvaney, the budget director, and matthew whitaker who is the acting attorney general. for his part, president trump tweeted he'll make the decision soon. >> thank you. >> in the meantime, former fbi director james comey is escalating a war of words with the president after the release of comey's closed-door testimony. halle jackson has that. good morning. >> reporter: this most recent round of back and forth was set off when james comey was called before congress last week. his testimony triggering a tweet storm from president trump. now comey is responding, suggesting donald trump could be in real legal trouble and making very clear what he thinks voters should do about it. stepping into the spotlight after coming under fire, former fbi director james comey on stage in new york overnight, responding to president trump. >> the president reacted to

your -- >> so he has finished reading the 250 pages? >> reporter: with msnbc's nicolle wallace, comey took on that tweet storm in which the president accused him without evidence of lying to congress friday during more than six hours behind closed doors. quote, leaking james comey must have set a record for who lied the most to congress in one day. >> we have to remind ourselves the president of the united states of america is publicly announcing that people are committing crimes, they should be in jail. private citizens. that's not okay, and if we become number become numb to it, we risk surrendering the norm. >> reporter: with that 253-page transcript released publicly over the weekend, and in it comey discussed how the fbi in late july of 2016, opened counterintelligence investigations of four americans to see if they were working in any way with the russians to influence our elections.

at least some of those people were associated with the trump campaign, comey said, but clarified the president himself was not one of them. since then, the investigation into russian interference has led to the guilty pleas or convictions of five former members of donald trump's orbit including his short-lived former national security adviser, michael flynn, and his former attorney, michael cohen. >> is the president of the united states right now an unindicted coconspirator? >> i don't know. if he is not there, he is certainly close. >> reporter: comey suggests that if donald trump were not president, he would be in serious jeopardy of being charged by the special counsel investigation, an investigation comey is confident in. he told the house committee, i would bet my life that bob mueller will do things the right way. comey making no secret of his political perspective heading into 2020. >> all of us should use every breath we have that make sure that the lying stops on january

cleaning up the mess after another violent weekend in paris. 10,000 protesters on the streets, paris in lockdown. a police crackdown, 1,000 arrests. for france's president macron, a political mess he can't clean up so quickly. he met union leaders this morning, but none of the protesters, the yellow vests, turned paris into a battleground. >> they took on riot police saturday even after they scrapped the hated gas tanks that ignited the protests. that didn't work. they see him as the president of the rich and they want him out. >> it's the start of a revolution. >> it's the end of this government. i am sure of that. >> reporter: but he won't resign, and police were determined to smother this saturday protest in clouds of tear gas. they have been firing tear gas and stun grenades for a couple of hours now.

streets next weekend. guys, back to you. >> all right. thank you. we move now to this year's heisman winner. saturday night, it was tarnished when comments he made as a teenager resurfaced. >> reporter: it was supposed to be the perfect night for kyler murray. but hours after being voted college football's best player, he was forced to apologize, after old tweets came back to haunt him. a star quarterback is now playing defense. hours after etching his name into college football lore. >> the 2018 heisman trophy is awarded to kyler murray. >> reporter: oklahoma quarterback kyler murray's saturday to remember quickly turned sour, after tweets he posted as a teenager, containing offensive language, resurfaced. according to multiple reports, some of murray's posts contained homophobic slurs.

now comedian nick cannon is speaking out, showing support for his friend, hart, by posting old tweets from other comedians, including chelsea handler, sarah silverman and amy schumer. tweeting, i wonder if there's backlash here. >> kyler, not the first athlete to face controversy over past tweets, either. >> reporter: donte divincenzo, the most valuable player during the final four. he had tweeted out some profane rap lyrics. and josh allen, a college quarterback that on the night of the draft, some of his racist language in tweets resurfaced. he was forced to apologize. a reminder that the tweets exist. there's people looking for them, as well. >> also it begs the question not to diminish what was said or tweeted, but it begs the question, at what age -- >> i certainly would not want to be judged by what came out of my mouth at age 14 or 15.

winter storm has powered through the southeast. let's get to miguel almaguer in hard-hit north carolina this morning. >> reporter: you can see the crews out trying to clear the sidewalks. people will be trying to traverse their way out of their homes later today. i say that as light snow comes down now. but the problem later on this afternoon is going to be the icy roads. we have our drone up. you may be able to see the roads. it is difficult to see that ice. there is certainly a layer of ice that is covering the roads out here. there's more than a thousand accidents up and down this region, all across the weekend. we know that four people were killed in this storm. that number the change as authorities make their way across to homes in the area. tens of thousands lost power. the north carolina guard was out early yesterday and later on overnight here, trying to get stranded motorists who simply could not get out of their cars. they were stuck on freeways and

enough activity that they would do well on tests like this. since you know that physical activities correlate with the ben fits, what should folks do? it's a key question. do the stair test. go out and find four flights of stairs. 50 steps, 55 in that range. run them. go up as fast as you can. don't fall. don't get hurt. if you can do the test well, you're doing enough activity in your day-to-day life. otherwise, follow the new u.s. government regulations, 2 1/2 hours a physical activity a week. >> i get the correlation between the stair test and heart health, but the correlation between the stair test and cancer. explain that to me. >> you're revving your body and it forces your immune system to be reactive. everyone who can hear my voice right now has cancer. but there's one or two little cancer cells that your immune system will find and kill. if your immune system is weakened, it misses a couple of the cancer cells and they can be ahead of you.

by being fit, you're telling the immune system, protect me. you're telling your brain, to defend your body. >> stairs are different. i do work out and i try to go up the stairs and i'm winded. what does that mean? are we doing the wrong exercises? >> stairs are unique in a couple of ways. they're rigorous activity. you look at places in blue zones, they do daily rigorous activity, climbing a mountain, moving up a ladder, things that force you to move up against gravity. gravity is here for a number of reasons. if we didn't have that activity in our lives, we wouldn't be fit. we need about two activities a week that require weight. you need two things a day when you lift something heavier with your body. do the stair test. if you don't do well, call a

an old window frame that you have painted out. you just use thumb tacks and have string and twine, hang some ornaments and initials. >> the funny thing, too, is this is a project that you can take on at home easily in a weekend. if you don't happen to have an old window frame lying around, you can get these for like a buck if you go to the habitat restore, you can usually find at garage sales and stuff. things like this that makes for a great ornament. >> old chalkboard. a lot of people like to have a chalkboard for their kids. >> i love displaying the cards. you get them and you don't know what to do with them. it's nice to hang them up. >> you can actually just draw the pattern down here that's the shape of the christmas tree. use a little twine and string. we used to hang them through doorways when you walk through. we used to hang string and we put the cards along there. it was hard to get to. >> if your friends give you ugly

greeting cards. get new friends or supplement it with pictures. i love printing off pictures of family members or cool messages that i see. cut them out of magazines. it doesn't have to just be cards. >> you put that on a charlie brown tree. >> it's a tomato -- this is your frame for that. just wrapped with garland. >> is that a hula-hoop? >> it's a ring, like what you would find on a barrel. you can do a hula-hoop. it has the beauty of a dream catcher but all of the photographs of your family on there. >> and string lights, we wrap this around the frame. hanging trees and cards and ornaments, whatever you want. at the end of the day, this is so simple, kids love to be involved over the holidays. if you display what you can create with your kids, it means a world of difference. you see how crafty you can be.
