"today in the bay" continues right now. in fact, take a peek outside at san jose this morning. barely see. christmas in the park. are on. otherwise you my not believe i'm showing you downtown san jose. that's the fog greeting us on this tuesday morning, as well as us. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we start with you. how long will we see the fog stick around? >> at least the next three hours for much of the bay area and then we'll see the sunshine breaking out. then fog advisory continues through 10:00. here's a look at san francisco. at times you can see the top of the buildings there, but here'se we can see the tri-valley, visibility reduced to almost nothing.

as we get a look at our map and what to expect t your bili before you head out the door, as we are going to see this lingering throughout the morning. there will be sunshine later today. i'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, your tracking a crash at the bay bridge? >> i am. the bay bridge toll plaza a crash i was looking for. looks likt' is where it traffic flowing smoothly there and notice tough visibility here and that will be the case across the span and even though the lanes are lightening up on the left approach, we still want to show you folks through contra costa county encountered fog that's a major factor there as well as the morning bay. yellowish highlights, for those who forgot, visibility really tough at least as bad as the bay bridge if not worse. highway 4 traditional slowing oun pittsburg, bay point and in towards concord. slowing here. 880 south out of oakland, in

towards fremont. surface streets throughout the bay definitely going to be tough and much tougher for t peninsula in towards san mateo. more yellow highlighting, unusual for folks in the area. palo alto at university. we can barely make out 101 corridor right here past university. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. 6:02 now. happening today, environmentalists are outraged now. president trump's administration is set to roll back clean water act protections for millions of acres of waterways and wetlands. that would include up to two-thirds of california's inland streams. joins us from capitol hill with a look at who will benefit from the changes that could certainly impact us californians. >> reporter: they certainly could, laura. od benefit and president trump certainly owns a lot of those and that's one of the reasons why td to do. water act and start all over. they've been chipping away at

>> reporter: hi there, laura. not feeling well and we head to the hospital we really don't want to wait. this deal could make that possible, that people can get care a little faster, because this adds more capacity to the existing santa clara valley county medical center and spreads it out throughout the county. in addition to this medical center, cou now operate o'connor hospital in san jose. st. louis's reasonal in gilroy and "mercury news" reports the county was first to bid on the health system sale and in the end offered the only bid. at 91% capacity.s st. louis regional hospital or the gilroy area, and st. paul's health center in morgan hill serves that area as well's there is a final hearing coming up on december 19th. this to finalize the deal.

today some possible help in the housing crisis in the south bay. san jose is set to vote on key changes to local rent laws. the city council will decide if duplexes will be included under the tenant protection ordinance. if passed thousands of units would be added. city leaders say there are more than 2,400 evictions without cause in san jose since 2010. the council will consider requiring landlords to accept section 8 housing vouchers. there are more than 4,000 applicants on the wait list. morng. heavy fog hanging across the bay area. live look from some of our traffic cameras. you can tell in some areas it's tough to see. fog cerlyross the bay area thisg and making our way to pleasanton. tom, seeing more fog behind you now. >> reporter: good morning, you guys. yes, coming into pleasanton just off 680 trying to find a safe place to pull off.

we were really starting to get into it. you can see especially in the traffic lights up on 680. even denser in some areas. zero visibility. maybe see 100 feet in front of you. even with the fog lights on. i can tell you, as i was coming in on a number of the interstates this morning, commuting in from east county area, i really hit some longer patches of it, where it was quite dangerous. you couldn't see maybe 100, 200 coitions but say the dense fog is not something they look forward to. >> it's going to be slow and careful. keep your distance between car careful. >> reporter: now, there is a dense fog advisory in effect as kari said earlier. the national weather service put out earlier today. that remains in effect until 10:00 this morning.

so all through the commuting hours and as i said, make sure you have plenty of following distance as you are driving in to work wherever you're going this morning, because you could hit patches of very dense fog. be safe out there. live in pleasanton right now. tom jensen, "today in the bay." as tom mentioned, kind of coming in patches. at times you can see. then otheres aittle bit of a clearer view looking at christmas in, park in down ton san jose. not only is it foggy but it's cold and to some spots where it is just above freezing, there may be slick spots on the roads. especially on the bridges and overpasses. as we look at our temperatures in the degrees. 39 in antioch. san jose is at 46 degrees. bundle up as e head out the door and get the kids out for school. martinez, 44 deg ge out for recess, it starts to warm up and clear out. we're going to see sunshine with

highs reaching into the upper 50s there. a lot of upper 50s and low 60s around the bay area and then we'll see more weather like this through the middle of the week. i'll have more on this in a few minutes. ,k a the tough commute where people are dealing with low visibility. >> definitely. even though it's not registering on this map we want to tell folks going through this, a crash is reported south 101 at sunol boulevard and may be visible from the freeway and also may have fog traveling through the area, because of that dense fog definitely, one of your usual suspects, almost always that sunol area out of pleasanton. we're tracking that. b bay. 101 and 280, drivers met with very low visibility, in comparison to what they usually see. usually a clear drive. knock up in contra costa county. that's still there as well. even though the fog isn't registering as strongly, highlighting with the road

a court says apple will not be allowed to sell some of its phones in china. alphabet, google, infocus because ceo of google is set to testify this morning before the house judiciary committee. they'll have him about perceived bias against conservatives. now, this meeting was supposed to be last week but set aside te to show up to an earlier hearing early this fall, and lawmakers were disappointed. >> i'm deeply disappointed that google, one of the most influential digital platforms in the world chose not to send its own top corporate leadership. . also have an advanced copy of the opening statement this morning. nothing unusual. though the google ceo goes out of his way to point out they are expanding outside of the bay area faster than inside the bay area and mentioned states. starts at:0 close midday

look at this. you recognizeook at the toll plaza headed into the bay bridge this morning. yep. it is pretty foggy out there. kari's keeping track of it. mike as well. certainly it affects your morning commute. kari, saying the fog should lift about 10:00 in the morning? >> yes. how long the dense fog advisory will be in effect. then also seeing it around the bay area. right now at 6:18, we are going to see that low visibility continue as you get ready to head out the door. look at these numbers. this shows visibility in miles. it's down to times down to zero in t 1/10 mile in san jose. then you can see just a little bit farther in other spots as we check out the temperatures. it is cold as you head out the fog, there is potential that there could be some isolated patches of freezing fog, which would make inner bayreally k.

in the mid-40s. as you step out the door, for some of us, it is about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than we normally see. so it's definitely colder than it was yesterday at this time. as we get a look at walnut creek, we are going to be in the low 40sst8:00. it's going to be 41 degrees, still foggy and then the sun will break out and it's going to feel so much nicer with low 60s. styling your hair this morning because of the fog, throw it back in a ponytail and go. we will get some sunshine by this afternoon and the humidity will be dropping. we're looking at highs in the up are 50s and low 60s and then also tracking the next round of rain. this brings in rain to the pacific northwest and as it that also keeps us from getting the dense fog like we're seeing right now. our next storm system won'tay.

head o to campbell, a temperature trend starts in the upper 40s. upper 50s going into early afternoon. here's a look at current visibility levels and down to almost nothing in oakland and san carlos. half a mile in livermore and about a 1/10 mile in san jose. what's ahead for the weekend is coming up. mike, trying to get us to work right now. >> right. i want folks to slow it down. traffic is lighter. you can slow it down and should slow it down for those conditions. from time to time we've been having almost no cameras to show you because osi that much meani dense fog throughout contra costa county. before you get to where 242 for west highway 4 slow out of pittsburg, b shg, bay point. south bay, a lot of fog. doesn't usually play a factor for the morning commute. folks getting to the road, be careful. san jose, more build here. and right in the middle, it shows maybe lighter visibility.

easier visibility, not quite the case. here's dublin. west 580 light traffic, tough for visibility for many points out of the altima pass and the bridge, seeing fog, cars disappearing. trust me, they arrive on the peninsula. >> play it safe. another look from the network of traffic cameras you see across the bay area. san jose, dublin, san rafael and fremont. depends where you are. be extra careful when you get behind the wheel. and "today in the" >> reporter: it is. good morning, marcus. and as kari was saying, this f moves i moves, but i can tell you thatense fog advisory that the national weather service has out until 10:00 a.m. this morning. through all the commuting hours, it is extremely heavy in areas and some of the patches are quite large as i was commuting in this morning from through the

east bay area. i can tell you that i ran into some patches that were several miles long where you could only see 100 feet in front of you. very hard as mike was saying to make adjustments at that point. you can barely see the white line for about 100 feet. you need to keep your distance. a lot of the drivers who we talked to this morning said that snow, rain, they'll take that, but dense fog, they don't like it at all. freeway as it did when i got off the freeway here. heavier when i got off. i wasn't expecting it. it doesn't happen like this every day. as you can see, as vehicles come into pleasanton coming through the fog. thicker on 680. you can see tail light heading in towards the san jose pleasanton, livermore. you saw onross the bay area.

so plenty of driving distance. keep the speeds down this morning as you're commuting in. even if coming in from the north bay. get in closer to the city and towards san francisco, you're going to run into dense fog once again. the national weather service, and kari was saying, should last until about 10:00 a.m. this morning. live in pleasanton, tom jensen, "today in the bay." >> all good advice. thank you. 6:34. new libraries in place in contra costa. the current system targets low-income people. today the board of supervisors votes on increasing fines from $5 to $10 per item. if it's damaged or loss replacement charges apply.g to happening today, a proposal those accounts. aimed at helping students go to college for free in san francisco. said to beis supvisors it working to decide whether to add the city college fund in next november's ballot.

latest status. patchy, dense fog in many places. bay bridge, lighter traffic, tougher to see. >> exactly. put the windshield wipers on to wipe it away. it's not that easy, though. >> not sticking around. right? >> we'll see rain moving in for the weekend. it's ga it's going to be off and on. a lot to track throughout the forecast. wanted to give you heads up before you head out there is dense fog and for the next couple of days we get a lot more sunshine. by friday, rain will be moving in and, yes, during the afternoon hours saturday also a chance of showers. and then a better chance ofnai as well,0s if you're heading out of town, in the forecast for the weekend. maybe going to squaw valley, friday and saturday is looking good as far as your travel days. coming back, there will be a mixture of rain and snow. that may make it a little bit longer getting back to the bay area. from your woods, one good day to get out there and go hiking. that's saturday. in between we'll see the showers

it might creep on you pretty quick. about 5:00 this morning on bascome avenue not far from 280. fog thicker on the surface streets and that's when we talked to some people. >> headed up fog anyways. >> just have to slow down. >> reporter: all right. so they remind you to slow down as they were saying they see a lot of folks driving too fast for the conditions. make sure you slow down. don't use your high beams. ebes. that is ideal. this isn't like central valley fog, but certainly not used to it much here in the south bay. do be careful out there, folks, and give yourself maybe extra time. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> nice when it lifts and clears. >> yeah. >> just got a note from sfo they are doing about one-hour delays right now. so if you've got a flight leaving out of san francisco -- >> for sfo, that isn't bad. >> no.

thinking, it may get worse as the morning goes along. just getting started here. we've seen the fog move around the bay area in patches and drifting by. here ho here's a look from above the tower andcamara --ra o the gol. driving, a mess. it will slow you down. visibility seen down to zero at san carlos, at the airport and in oakland. seen it a little less in parts of the south bay where visibility now at about a quarter of a mile, and about a half of a mile in livermore. all of this measured in miles, and the lower the number, the it's also very cold with those temperatures just above freezing in santa rosa. if you go farther to the north, encountering freezing temperatures and fog, may get freezing fog which can deposit on the bridges and overpasses and make things really icy.

bundle up, because you will need a warm coat with the temperatures in the 30s and 40s this morning. also you might want to wear some nice comfortablettin out there p the sun. after dealing with fog and clouds this morning, we will get mostly sunny skies. highs upper 50s and low trackin couple storm systems moving in. this one bringing rain to the specific northwest and this will fizzle out before it makes it into the bay area. also bring in more clouds, which may inhibit some of the fog from developing for tomorrow. then as we go into friday, going to track rain moving in and, yes, i know this is in time for the weekend and outdoor plans. still seeing waves of showers move through. slight chance saturday and heavier round of rain moving in again between sunday and monday. look at a few of these systems passing by. overall looking at the bigger picture, we are not going to see

showed you this. the fog continued to move over to the peninsula side. now onlowe t visibility. definitely slow down those speeds. the major factor heading across 92 from hayward over to thespot. a live look at san jose. this morning we had a lot of fog here. actually looking clearer now. i want to point out right here. the freeway that's slowing 101 at 680 northbound from 101. the white line right there is what referred to as the fog line. you can use it for assistance during lower visibility to tell where the edge of the freeway is. don't count on that 100%. use all your senses, of course, and logic. watch for flashing lights. that fog cleared from this report here in san jose, just as the kmoo commute is starting to build. >> thanks, mike. good advice. 6:. a food recall. before you eat that breakfast.
