"early today" starts right now. >> good wednesday morning. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. a deadly terror attack at a christmas market in france has left three dead and 11 injured. the streets of strasbourg turn into pandemonium after a gunman unleashed several rounds at the world famous christmas market. sending shoppers running for cover, officials say the 29-year-old suspect was confronted twice by police and was shot before managing to escape. >> france's counterterrorism unit is out in full force with 350 agents hunting for the gunman. the a.p. is reporting that five people have been detained so far in connection to the case, but the killer is still at large.

nbc's ali aruzi is joining us a terror watch list. what more do we know? > reporter: that's right, known to security services as a possible terrorist threat, opened fire on a popular christmas market, killing at least three people and injuring 11 others. now five people are said to be in critical condition after the attack. the attack took place in the city of strasbourg. it's about 310 miles east of paris on france's border with germany. it's a very popular place at this time of year. it has the largest christmas market in france, and it promotes itself as the capital of christmas. now, according to french authorities, the suspect escaped after exchanging gunfire with soldiers and armed police. he is believed to be injured. now, initially some people thought the gunfire was firecrackers, then it was sheer panic when it became cwa going . now, witnesses describe hearing gunshots and screams and shouts,

and police telling people to duck for cover. the city has been in lockdown as there is a massive manhunt underway to try and find the named him, but we are not naming him as of yet until we have full confirmation and paris is in full, full terror alert mode right now until they can find the suspect. guys? >> let's hope it happens in very short order. ali, thank you. >> breaking news out of london, it could make this british prime minister theresa may's last day in office. conservative party lawmakers say they have reached the threshold to trigger a voteriti house of . the vote will be held today between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. local time. many lawmakers have been angered over may's handling of brexit. if they vote no confidence, may could step down or fight in a new election. but if she wins, she can't be challenged again for one year. >> president trump's former personal attorney is scheduled for sentencing today in a new york federal court.

michael cohen pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges, including campaign finance and business crimes as well as lying to congress. the campaign finance violations are related to hush money payments made to two women ahead of the 2016 election. a move federal prosecutors say was directed by mr. trump. for more on today's courtroom fireworks, let's get to nbc's tracie potts in d.c. tracie, the president is already weighing in on the cohen case. >> reporter: well, he certainly is, because in those guilty pleas, cohen implicated the president saying that he directed those hush money payments. president trump has pushed back on that, but today is decision day for the president's long-time personal attorney. as you noted, he has now pleaded guilty to millions of dollars in fraud, tax fraud, bank fraud, tax evasion in his personal and business dealings, not to mention arranging those hush money payments that you talked about. also, separate from all of that,

the russia investigation. special counsel robert mueller says he lied to the feds. today, decision day for michael cohen, with president trump possibly impacted by all of this. here's the president's reaction. in an interview with reuters talking about michael cohen, president trump said, michael cohen is a lawyer. i assume he would know what he's doing. going on to say that, number one, it wasn't a campaign contribution -- talking about those hush money payments. if it were, it's only civil, and even if it's only civil, there was no violation based on what we did, okay. so today, the question, what type of jail time will michael cohen get? he's asked for none, but the issue right now seems to be how much he's going to get. prosecutors are recommending a substantial term. phillip? >> he's cooperating hoping for leniency. see what he gets. tracie, thank you. >> president trump has drawn a line in the battle over the border wall. in a heated meeting with top
