>> thanks, mike. new for you this morning, crime during christmastime im. robbery leads to a chase and crash. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in fremont, where it ended. bob, are you going to tell us what happened at the beginning? >> reporter: correct, kris and marcus. this crash ended not far from here northbound 880 off mowery. this is off ranch drive near 880 and 237, it was around 12:10 this morning. police received a report that two people, a man and a woman, robbed that walmart, using a knife. when the police arrived, they saw the couple in the car, and that's when they tried to pull them over, but of course, the couple did not stop. they took off, according to police, and led them on a chase up 880. it's about a nine-mile chase, talking about up 880 and that's when they got just north of mowery here in fremont that they rolled over, and were taken into custody with

non-life-threatening injuries. police did recover the merchandise as well that was stolen from the walmart. again, a man and a woman who robbed that walmart just after it closed or maybe during the closing, they were alerted around 12:10, they are in custody after leading police, milpitas police on a chase. reporting live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." developing this morning, president trump is on defense. here is him being sworn in back in 2017. today, there's brand new investigation there involving his campaign related to his inaugurati inauguration. tracie potts is live in washington with more. good morn. that swearing in video is relevant because the new investigation goes all the way first took office and investigators think it may involve millions of dollars in donations that may not have been used properly.

in east palo alto to mark the completion of a flood protection project years in the making. the flood project launched at the start of the decade. work began in 2016. the project is set to better protect thousands of homes along the nearly two-mile stretch near the creek. serious flooding from an el nino back in 1999 got this whole project kickstarted. listen to this. cloud cloning reducing climate change. some san francisco tree growers seem to think so. this morning, they are planting 75 coastal redwoods around the presidio, all of which are cloned from the world's oldest trees. they say each tree can remove 250 times more carbon dioxide in its life time than the average tree. the planting starts at 9:00 this morning. amid constant building and

whotruction in the bay area, we saved a small sliver of land from development. >> she helped to transform it into 25 acres of open space. this is a park that sits at the west end of alameda along constitution and atlantic, the same place where the old alameda belt line train station was. developer was going to turn that land into homes when the rail line decommissioned in the 1990s, but a local woman named jean sweeney discovered the original land agreement allowed the city to buy that land back at a fraction of its market value. >> and so that's how the park came to be, but i think to have a park here, another park,arks . >> on saturday morning they will open the aptly named jean

sweeney open space park. monday is a no go for mavericks, the day organizers were aiming to start the big surf competition but it looks like the weather conditions will be too wild. organizers hope conditions will improve later in the week. vianey, you're watching that as well. >> we're keeping a close eye. the reason they're concerned is because of the south-southwesterly winds, a big swell, upwards of 40 feet toward sunday and monday with the incoming storm system, so that's the reason why they're concerned, safety first. we're dealing with dangerous waves. if you are a professional, they've canceled that. never turn your back to a wave. if you're caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore. my best advice is don't swim. keep on the sand, just watch from a distance. we're watching for the south-southwesterly winds. expect them to be gusty sunday

but look at this shot of san francisco. you can see we don't have a lot of fog this morning. we're getting some reports of some patchy fog in through the north bay and portions of salinas, but san francisco is waking up to clear skies. we have some cloud cover rolling in on our radar. if you're headed out the door right now, this is what your temperatures are looking like, some 40s and even some low to upper 50s. check out half moon bay, 58 degrees. the reason some of the temperatures are running a couple of degrees warmer is because of the increase in the cloud cover on the satellite .adar, and that's exactly what right here, we don't have a lot of rain pushing through. the scattered showers are expecto k let's talk about your microclimate highs for the day. low 60s, mid-60s for your morning. it's going to be okay, but as we head in towards the afternoon, this is what it's going to look like. right around 9:00 a.m., we start to get the line of showers pushing through. by 11:00 a.m., some portions of santa rosa, san francisco will start seeing some rain and

between 9:00 and 6:00, we get the heaviest of the rain to the north bay and the santa cruz mountains. this scattered chance of showers linger into saturday morning. we catch a break saturday afternoon. sunday when our rain maker moves in. look at the line here. you could see where the orange and the yellow hues are around 6:00, where we expect moderate to heavy downpours. the line of rain will linger through the start of monday morning. these are estimated rain totals so far. we are tracking the possibility of seeing over an inch and a half, upwards of two inches for portions of the north bay in through napa and mountainous areas as well and tracking the dangerous waves possibly up to 40 feet, so much so they canceled the plans to have the mavericks on monday. that gives you a good idea of how dangerous that swell is expected into monday. temperatures we're expecting upper 50s in for the inland areas. tracking morning showers on saturday. we catch a little bit of a break saturday afternoon and sunday, our second chance of rain rolls to be our

firefighters were busy a terrifying new video just in to our newsroom this morning. >> firefighters were busy battling a massive fire in new york, with enthhen this happene. take a look. >> oh, my gosh! >> crews were knocked off of their feet when those flames and smoke burst out of that strip mall, this was in queens. this fire explosion also as a back draft set off a five-alarm fire last night. seven fe ig people were injured. incredibly, the injuries were all minor. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> makes me think about all the times we stand close during pop beto o'rourke plans to meet with

good to be with you. especially nice to be outside, when it's so cold out there, vianey. >> we're seeing high clouds rolling in, that will help warm up our morning temperatures a little bit. this is exactly what our satellite radar is showcasing right now, the high clouds rolling through. let me show you the 24-hour temperature change and some areas of fog, but not hitting the bay area. you could see patchy fog in through santa rosa. the numbers that you see on your screen are the temperatures running warmer than where we were yesterday at this exact hour. look at napa, running 12 degrees warmer at this hour because of those high clouds. in through concord, five degrees warmer. san francisco is running about nine degrees warmer and half moon bay waking up to the upper 50s, running about 13 degrees warmer, so we're definitely noticing a nice increase in temperatures thanks to the clouds, but clouds will also be bringing a sign of the showers just ahead. i'll have a closer look at when the rain is moving in, coming up in a bit. >> vianey is checking the signs of the showers, checking the

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us now from santa rosa where officials are talking about this issue later this morning, and pete, more importantly, regular folks get to weigh in as well. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, kris. the public workshop will take place here in santa rosa in just a few short hours and of course, power lines in general were determined to be the cause when it comes to several of those north bay wildfires that we've . now, the california public utilities commission is the group that's going to be putting together this workshop, and they voted yesterday to give this power shutoff plan that we saw pg put i they want to give it a closer look to establish more of a criteria for residents. now, it was back in october that

pg&e had this shutoff power plan in place in napa and lake counties due to what they considered fire danger conditions. pg&e reports it may have averted two dozen fires as a result of this shutoff plan, but some fire victims aren't too keen on this idea. >> we feel turning the power off will be worse, because we have people working with gasoline, power generators, and we burned down one. >> he with know in the sierra with the ferocity and unprecedented damages we see from wildfires, we can't keep doing the same thing. >> reporter: the public workshop will take place later this morning in santa rosa at veterans memorial auditorium behind me and set to begin at 9:00 a.m. we're live in santa rosa. s s. f -- pete suratos for "today in the bay."

>> 5:34 for you right now. it's been a long night for cleanup crews in union city. some of them may only be getting to sleep, after a water main break caused major flooding in that area, this happened a little before 5:00 p.m. yesterday, union city boulevard and whipple road. pg&e says one of its contracting crews doing work in that area may have actually clipped a 14 inch water main and at last check, that road closure there was still in effect. 5:35 right now, and parking in the city is a pain, we all know it. today, the mta is lookingatic maing changes to make it a little easier. the agency is looking at changing dozens of parking spots and several of the changes will happen on on clement street in the richmond district. find out more going to the meeting at 10:00 this morning. a live look at emeryville this morning, where the skyline could look very different in the future if developers get their wish. we've beenthere. the city's planning commission

met last night to discuss the proposed 54-story tower with 638 residential units. if built, it would be the second tallest all residential building in the western united states. that project exceeds height restrictions for buildings in emeryville, so developers have to show planning commission how it will benefit the community. opinions from the public were mixed. >> just imagine 54-story tower right there. it doesn't fit. it's crazy. it's insane. >> if this can be designed to provide more housing, a more urban environment, i this i that -- think that's exactly what we want in emeryville. >> developers could include affordable housing in the project. formerirstay lady michelle obama will be in the bay area for events, one is private,o te is happening. >> the former first lady is here

in the bay area to meet with young adults and also to promote her autobiography "becoming." obviously as mentioned that private event is invite only but just to tell you about it, it is a special youth leadership workshop hosted by the silicon valley chapter public allies. it's a 25-year-old nonprofit organization that focuses on guiding young people into education and leadership roles. mrs. obama is expected to recount the organization's impact on her life. she used to serve as its executive director in chicago back in 1993. the second event for anyone interested is open to the public, that is part of the event is titled "becoming: an intimate conversation with michelle obama" tonight at 8:00 at the s.a.p. center in san jo o the official website on ticketmaster and looks like the event is sold out. i did not check any of the third party resale sites. i can only imagine those tickets

friday light. did you know that? >> i think we might have mentioned it once or twice today. vianey, nice weather at least for most of the weekend? >> nice weather right now. in the next couple hours, as we head into the weekend, we'll take it. we have an active weather pattern, so much so that it's going to take you on a whirlwind this weekend. let's go into your saturday forecast. today we'll track a line of showers. the system will move in bringing periods of rain into the north bay, heavier rain into the santa cruz mountains. when you start out your saturday, expect cloudy skies d earlyowers. as far as the temperatures go, we're talking about 50s and 60s. midway through saturday, the winds will start picking up as well and die down. we'll catch a little bit of a break and as we head in toward sunday, this is our second system, and this is going to be our big rainmaker, at least compared to what we've seen from

good morning, it is 5:44. as you head out the door, you're going to notice some spots are running a little bit warmer. if you're waking up in half moon bay, 58 degrees. we have high clouds rolling through that's causing a little bit of a warmup for early morning temperatures. everywhere else, we're talking upper 40s. i am tracking incoming rain. i'll talk about the time line for that and rain totals coming up in a bit. and palo alto looking good. look at that northbound with the tail lights past willow and southbound with the headlights toward university. no problems for the bay area or 280 along the peninsula drive. i'll show you how things are starting to slow down a tad bit in a couple spots. 5:45 right now. new video this morning for you. this man recovering after his

car slammed into a tree. i want you to listen to this. he's in the hospital because someone saw the tree down. when the public works employees got there around 1:30, they found the car. few crews arrived to pull that driver out. they tell us that that man may have been there for more than an hour. no word if alcohol or drugs played a role in that crash. >> wow. if you're among the many who use delivery services like amazon for your holiday shopping, this video may make you wink a little. >> it shows an amazon delivery driver caught on not exactly handling with care. the man who lives at that home says he was expecting a par kel for his 5-year-old son and when he saw the dented box, he checked out his surveillance video. his camera caught the same driver doing the same thing to his neighbor's package. >> it unt doesn't feel good but

we're not dealing with any rain right now, but by about 9:00, north bay will start getting some of the showers. you can see we have a weak cold front that's going to sweep through, and by 11:30, right between i would say 1:00 and even all the way through 6:00, we're going to track a line of showers push through. anything north of the going going will have the best chance of seeing moderate showers but anything south of that, just some light scattered rain, it will continue into saturday. looking ahead toward sunday, this is going to be our big weather system. this is a second system after acttern, expected saturday morning with showers and increase in intensity toward sunday evening. right around your dinnertime is when we're expecting to see periods of moderate to heavy downpours push from the north down to the south bay. those showers will carry over into monday morning's commute, so that will be something you got to look out for if you have to leave early on monday, do so. estimated rain totals from the second system, the first one not a big rainmaker but sunday into early morning, portions of the
