right now at 9:00 a triple threat storm hitting the bay area. rain leading to soggy roadways and soggy holiday activities. and on the coast, dangerous rough waters. a high surf warning in effect. we have team coverage for you of the storm. the news starts right now. good evening, everyone. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm in for vicky tonight. we are on with a special edition of nbc bay area news because of sunday night football. >> the bay area under a micro climate weather alert right now. rain, wind, and strong surf. the storm bringing it all tonight. live look outside over san jose. oh, the handle effect from those -- the halothe headlines because of w on the lens -- a wet commute. it is going to be staying slick for some time. >> it is. we have team coverage from the coast and from the weather center. let's start with our meteorologist rob mayeda. >> some of the heaviest downpours we have seen throughout the day are happening outside right now.

storm ranger doppler radar has a great angle down towards burlg game. the pocket of orange is showing up. downpours along the roadway along 280 and 101. from the east bay, from oakland up towards berkeley. richmond looking at moderate rain. not so much right now in san jose. this ban, as you can see has fired up here in the last couple of hours -- this is the last push of the heavier rain, we think that will be falling mainly for areas from san francisco into the south bay between now and midnight. then we will begin to see the rain tapering off but still impacting part of the morning commute. the story moving forward the ongoing high surf warning. some of the wave heights are approaching 20 feet offshore. that story continues through the day monday where breakers could be 20 or 30 feet. would he will have a closer look at that and how much rain you can expect to impact the morning commute in the full forecast. the storm triggered high

surf warnings along bay area beaches. that combined with the coming high tide will make for some dangerous waves. sergio can tannah is keeping an eye on current conditions live in pacifica on the. sergio. >> reporter: as you know, any time there are some treacherous waves they do shut down the municipal pier here quite quickly. but that hasn't stopped people from coming out to check out these waves. throughout the evening we have seen a few people come out here and actually just gaze at the huge waves coming and crashing ashore. this weekend, of course, there were warnings of the high surf. and here's a look right now of the way it looks just a ago, ju at fort points, at the golden gate brge ocean beach in san fr a little bit earlier, there were actually quite a few people out there as well.

san francisco took a preemptive measure earlier this weekend and actually asked people not to go out to the beach because there were concerns that the waves could actually get all the way out to the sea wall. we did talk to a few residents who decided they wanted to check that out. >> just the thought of the waves getting huge out here. because we have a huge expansive beach and nobody sees waves like that that often. >> we were watching and they were saying it is going to be 50 feet, going to hit the sea wall. so i was like we have got to see that. right in. >> reporter: as you can see, some of these waves are crawling up along that fehr and eventty dramatically. right now, we are actually feeling a little bit of the wind and some of the rain. but.t obviously, we are going to update you on that coming up on nbc bay area news at 11. reporting live in pacifica, i'm

sergio can tannah. the weather conditions are actually not what the organizers of the mavericks challenge wanted to see. you would think they would be. they are not. today the decision was made not to run mavericks at all this week. the concern that the waves will not be big enough later this week for the competition. organizers say that's okay because january is typically the best month for maverick. they will continue to monitor the situation. christie smith will join us later with more on the mavericks. use the nbc app to get updates on the weather in your neighborhood and follow us on all of our platforms. in hayward thisughhe front sizzler restaurant, and yes, it was full of diners. roz, those people must have been

stunned? >> reporter: they had to have been stunned. there were at least 30 people in that restaurant, we are told. the damage is extensive. look behind me. it took them quite a while to get that all cleaned up and boarded up. we are also learning tonight from hayward fire that one of the people transported to the hospital had fairly serious injuries and was taken to a trauma unit. the otherings who were taken to the hospital, not as salve injured. let's show you some of the video. first take a look at the witness video of the scene just after 1:00 this afternoon. this is near the intersection of hess pairian boulevard and wynton avenue. you can see the tail end of the truck sticking out the restaurant's front windows. officials say the truck was head south when it collided with a vehicle that was turning right onto the street. the truck was hit, lost control and smashed through the windows of the restaurant where we are told the dining roop was packed. five injured diners were taken

to the hospital to be checked out and paramedics on the scene examined and evaluated another two dozen or so. no workers were injured. the extensive cleanup weapon on for hours. there was glass and debris scattered everywhere. police are investigating what happened. we don't think it was weather related because this call happened before the rain came through this area. we are told that the person that was taken to the trauma unit, we don't know the extent of the injuries but the fire department suggested they might be held overnight for observation because the injuries were more serious than those of the others. one lane is blocked at this hour on southbound 680 at willow pass ro he had in concord. the reason? this crash right here. the driver of that white volkswagen suv on the left side of your screen lost control, ended up on the top of the center median. no injuries are reported. but this did affect traffic in

the area all day long. no word at this point when the one lane will reopen. a two car crash in san jose left three people injured and one man dead. it happened on the trimble offramp on northbound 101. fire departments arrived on the scene to find a man ejected to he have the freeway barrier and onto the ramp. he died. three others were transported and expected to be okay. chp is investigating to see if speed or alcohol played a role in the crash. happening tomorrow, an east bay man will be sentenced after pleading guilty he provided material support to isis sympathizers. the man entered his guilty plea in july after originally saying he was not guilty. the fbi says the 23-year-old promised to unleash a i have been with a of vie help terror attacks across the bay area. he is said to have opened multiple social media accounts for two isis sympathizers. is had attorney says all he did

was open the accounts but never planned to actually carry out an attack. he could be sentenced nearly 50 years in prison for the crime. a lot of families were out holiday shopping today. one group of families took to the streets of san francisco to raise awareness. ferries march to the exploratorium to protest how my great pts are being treated a of the the border. the group called out the government claiming separating families and incarcerating kids is a violation of human rights. >> as a japanese american i know that indefinite detention with your family is something beef done before, it is not okay. >> thepresters collected donations with hopes of reuniting displaced families saying no children should be alone on christmas. still ahead on this edition of nbc bay area shocking and ab horpt photos cleanup

fired after making fun of new on the to, a shocking story from the camp fire zone. three construction workers have been fired after making fun of the victims of the camp fire. the employees hired to clear the wreckage of the camp fire in paradise were fired after posting insensitive photos on facebook from homes destroyed by the fire. one of the photos showed the men sitting in a burned out rv pretending they were driving it. another had a man playing on a burned fire truck toy. one picture was graphic and we decided not to show you that one. big crane and rigging, the company the men work for calls the incident an abhorrent econvenient. the farm linked to the romain lettuce e. coli outbreak

is recalling red and green leaf lettuce and cauliflower. the farm says water that tested positive with e. coli may have come in contact with the produce. the e. coli has been linked to hundreds of illnesses. people should avoid romain lettuces from nearby farms, too, because they may also be tainted. the mavericks surf competition will not be happening this weekend. this comes as a high surf warning is in effect. thro came t for those who decid test the waters. nbc was exclusively at the meeting, christie smith has the story. >> reporter: the pounding surf at the state beach brought surfers out ahead of the rain. >> choppy. but it looks like this inside is starting to work a little bit. it is better than it looked this morning. >> reporter: did you go out this morning? >> no, i just looked at it.

it was too small. now the swell is starting to pick up. >> reporter: a high surf warning is in effect as questions lingered about the mavericks challenge big wave surfing contest. >> even if the swell is huge, they won't have the contest because conditions will be too bad. >> reporter: late this afternoon the world surf league said it won't happen this week. adding the wind is good and clean and and swell will be dropping by thursday and we won't have the consistency we need to run an excellent event. but anticipation has been building for the contest. at mavericks surf shop they have been busy. jeff clark is a pioneer at the surf break. >> the swell is going to ebb and flow, come up and down. and to catch it, you jus to be here. that's why all the pros are in town. >> reporter: this morning there was a meeting that organizers called a first as surfers and spectators are in town. >> how dangerous it was going to be, and you know, what they can do to help, you know, mitigate some of their risks. >> reporter: talking safety and

experience as people may still head out? y seen some of these swells before. some of these guys have not. >> reporter: near half moon bay, christie smith nbc bay area news. >> the world surf league says with three months left in the waiting period they are confident they will be able to run the event this season and thattian is typically the best month for mavericks. >> a lot of rain today, not as much wind as anticipated but the wave heights are rising right now. that's the weather story that continues through 9:00 tomorrow night. as the rain story backs down the wave heights are coming up. 15 to 18 foot swells offshore. long period swell at 20 seconds or close to it off to the west of half moon bay in sfrang. breakers of 20 to 30 feet possible through the day on monday. right now it is a soggy drive around san francisco. 53 degrees. wind speed about 10 to 20.

san jose right now, 58 degrees, winds at 17 miles per hour. as you can see here on our storm ranger mobile doppler radar the downer pos continue. in the east bay, oakland, trivalley, you are about to see steadier rains from castro valley heading into your location in half an hour or show. san jose catching a brief break. but this line of showers will continue to advance into the south bay as we approach around midnight tonight. again you see here on the future cast from 9:00 until midnight the he can to us shifts into the south bay. behind it some clearing. still a chance for a few showers. notice the time stamp. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, as the morning commute get lot of heav rain. but the rain that's falling right now will likely leave ponding on the roads for the, mo. we will still see slick conditions in the morning. we shouldn't be adding to it though as we go through the day on monday. a few showers are possible around the hill tops but nothing like they are seeing outside right now. morning temperatures will be in the 40s to low 50s.

highs tomorrow under gradually clearing case is should be close to 60 in santa clara and san jose, trivalley, close to 60. upper 50s in oakland. and a few pop-up showers possible right here around the crest of the santa cruz mountains. that's still an ongoing possibility as we head through the afternoon. san francisco, upper 50s. and north bay temperatures tony in the upper 50s with a few early showers. the pattern as we move forward is trying to bring a little more shower activity our way as we go through the week. you will notice now the rain line a little bit further to the south. it is a little bit of a change in the extended forecast now. if you will notice in the next seven days, no storms like you are seeing right now. wave heights won't be as high either. but we will have to bring in a chance of showers especially for the north bay on thursday. and i think the entire bay area on friday. i think we will see more showers come there. the pattern staying act the. this you shhh mean theory foot of snow for the sierra coming

and i )m anoushah rasta... welcome back to our special edition of nbc bay area news. i am terry mcsweeney. >> here are some of the top stories we are following for you. a strong storm bringing a triple punch. th,rain, dangerous surf along the coast. a high surf warning is in effect tlul tomorrow morning and people are being told to stay off the beaches. waves are expected to create breakers reaching between 25 and 40. the mavericks big wave surf contest will not be happening

this week. instead, organizers say they will wait for better condition in half moon bay. less dangerous conditions. the world surf league says with three months left in the competition window they are confident they will be able to run the event this season. also tonight, a it frooenning scene in an east bay unt stra. look at this. a car came crashing into a sizzler restaurant in hayward during lunchtime today. the restaurant was full of people. five people were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a group of protesters took to the streets to raise awareness about the migrant crisis a the border. they marched from the ferry building to the exploratorium. the protesters collected donations with hopes of reuniting displaced families, stating no child should be alone on christmas. night, more news out of washington

police say a drug overdose is the suspected cause of death. of course an investigation is underway. crow is the ceo of the once popular hq trivia act. he also worked at twitter after helping launch vine. in northern japan 40 people were hurt in an explosion at a restaurant. last night's explosion caused nearby homes to shake and set off a large fire. it happened on sapporo. one injury was very serious. the cause remains under investigation. several witnesses reported smelling gas in the iria after the explosion. a polish national died this weekend from injuries sustained in tuesday's shooting. several other people are recovering from injuries. the suspect in the mass shooting was killed during a with police on tuesday. christmas market in strawsburg draws millions of tourists each year. the market is back open, but under heavy security. new tonight, the pilot who

crashed a jet over hawaii last week is speaking out tonight for the first time. he described the nerve-racking moments during the accident. nbc's kate snow has the story. former navy fighter pilot matt possiblier remembers every moment from last wednesday. >> i remember it was a beautiful day. and we were looking forward to having a good flight. and my airplane didn't want to fly anymore. >> reporter: the civilian contractor was piloting a jet during military exercises when something went very wrong. he wanted to make it back to the runway but couldn't. >> buildings over there, boats there. that looks open. i kept on flying. so i didn't have more options left. and then i pulled the ejection handle. >> reporter: he shot out of the cockpit and plunged into the ocean. >> we heard this boom and saw the pilot eject from the plane. >> reporter: with his parachute still attached he got lucky. a guide on a nearby parasailing
