5:01 am
pounding the roof during the overnight hours and now it's starting to move out. we're left with the water on the roadways. a look at highway 101 in palo alto riding just past ikea and we get a lot of sunshine today, helping to dry things out but it will take a while. we'll start out with low 50s as you get ready to step out the t door. you can see storm ranger line of showers moving through the tri valley and toward the central valley and still some pspotty, light rain in the north bay. i'll keep an eye on this and talk about what else is ahead in the forecast. mike, a few bigger puddles reported. >> you show that push all the way across the bay area, a little activity in the north bay as well. i borrowed kari's radar and that's what you see. now you sweep it away and we also have fog and moisture up in the air in the north bay and all around the bay so be prepared for slippery conditions. little puddling reported 101 around vermont, san jose, 280 and 17, a couple spots for off-ramps in campbell and santa clara area as well.

5:03 am
was another person who was outside a car because of a crash, who was hit also by another hydroplaning car. i'll show you the scene, just a couple of hours ago at 280 and saratoga. chp officer was stopped at a crash scene assisting another driver when another driver passing by lost control and just hydroplaned into that chp cruiser. that was just the beginning of that dangerous domino effect. three of the lanes of 280 were flooded at the time with as much as four inches of water. another driver also lost control and that driver hit a person who was out of their vehicle on the side of the freeway. that person was taken to the hospital by ambulance. although the rain has stopped here, as kari mentioned, there is a lot of water on the roadway, and folks, you can't see it, because it's so dark, so if you come upon it, you will just hit it and you might skid a little bit. remember, if you do hit standing water, don't slam on your

to remove her from the car. the woman was sent to a nearby trauma center. her condition so far is not known. we don't know if the wet roads are factorred into that crash. the state department reportedly refusing to budge for a woman who wants to get back to the bay area to say good-bye to her young son on life support. this is a photo from the father of the boy. the boy was a brain disease, according to "the chronicle" the woman is stuck in yemen due to president trump's travel ban. the ild choo's family is asking for a waiver to allow her back here to the bay area. president trump sent out angry tweets over the weekend. >> there may be more coming, scott. >> yes, good morning. two big things to watch out for this week, marcus, both have the president quite angry. one is the potential shut down. the other is a new report commissioned by the senate intelligence committee that will
5:44 am
document how the russians used the internet in a coordinateed attempt to get trump elected. this makes the president angry because it calls his popularity into question, was it real. "the washington post" has gotten advanced copy of this report, says silicon valley companies were not very helpful putting it together. the report singles out google's youtube as a particularly big offender, both unknowingly helping the russians, then not helping researchers document what happened. as for the shutdown, there are five days left, 12:01 saturday morning. no plans to avert it. you'll remember, president trump said he proudly would shut down the government if he didn't get funding for his wall. democrats have said he's not going to get it, so unstoppable force versus unmovable object. the president angry about the season finale of "saturday night live" in which his nemesis, alec baldwin portrays him in a spoof of "it's a wonderful life" the classic christmas movie. the president says "a real

scandal is the one-sided coverage hour by hour of networks like nbc and democrat spin machines like "saturday night live." it's nothing less than unfair news coverage and dem commercials. should be tested in courts. can't be local, only defame and belittle collusion. "saturday night live" makes fun of a lot of presidents and they take it pretty well. president ford appeared on "snl" saying "live from new york, it's saturday night" and literally h.w. bush ok about making invited his impersonateor, dana harvey, to the white house. we'll be watching everything that happens today as we do every day. follow me on twitter. i'm @scottmcgrew. >> thanks, scott. for one player on the chicago bears, clinching a playoff spot was just the start of a big celebration. >> he also found a teammate in life.

>> jennifer marie ross, would you love to be charles, i mean jennifer marie leno jr.? >> yes. >> she said yes. she said yes. the stadium was full of screaming friends there. he got on one knee, popped the question to his girlfriend at the 50 yard line. those fans witnessed the whole thing on the jumbo tron. charles and jennifer, consider yourselves officially on the clock. hmm. >> that's a nice ring. >> yes, it is. a word of warning to you this morning if you head out to the coast. extreme conditions are causing some really massive waves. >> one of our crews there thought they were in a safe location moments ago but they were not president the huge wave crashed onto shore, hitting our crew. they are okay, but here's what happened just about ten minutes ago.
5:47 am
>> oh! >> we've been talking about those waves. did you hear sharon katsuda out there? she saw it coming and josh koeppel is our photographer, he's like yeah, no live shot right now, guys. they are moving to a safer location, b reminder for all of us to be so careful out there, stay away from the water this morning. they were a distance away, preparing for that. >> and those waves, too, are very unpredictable, so it looks like some of thees are f locati then suddenly just one giant wave just rushes up, so we know that these are very dangerous conditions out there, that will continue throughout the afternoon as well, and so we are looking at these kinds of waves over the next four days, and it's longlasting, so that means in between the waves, it's a long period before the next wave comes in, about 15 to 20 seconds, so you don't want to
5:48 am
turn your back and the best advice, of course, no swimming and it's too rough for mavericks, these are professional surfers that can't even get out there in these conditions, so you are not a match. we are going to also see this going throughout the day. coastal flooding will also be possible. as we look at what caused those high waves, the storm system that moved through brought in some high winds. now it continues to move to the east of the bay area, so we are behind, especially in parts of the north bay, and along the coast, where it's misting and drizzling right now. what's going to keep the waves really high, another storm system moving in. we can see it will mostly be mo across the north bay over the next several hours. but let's look at how much rain we had from the storm system that just moved through. in boulder creek in the vuz mountains we have two and a half inches of rain. mt. tam an inch and a half, also an inch and a half in pacifica. cloverdale had almost two inches of rain. napa an inch and a half, and san
5:49 am
francisco three-quarters of an inch. brentwood, el cerrito had three-quarters of an inch of rain, gilroy an inch and a half and a half inch of rain in the tri valley and livermore. foster city reaching almost a half of an inch and pretty good in san jose, over an inch of rain. as we go throughout the day, if you're on your way out the door, maybe headed to diridon station, it's going to be in the lo dry . some sunshine in the forecast today and near normal high temperatures, as we take a live look, we are seeing some cloudy skies overhead, and some wet roads. be prepared for the high humidity that we have this morning. maybe just throw on a hat and go, and also a nice warm jacket. looking at our temperatures, though, that will be warming up into the upper 50s and low 60s, and it will be a very nice afternoon. as we track that next storm system, i wanted to take you through the waves of rain that could move through parts of mainly northern sonoma and mendocino and lake counties tomorrow. we're going to see that starting
5:50 am
throughout the morning, and continuing through the afternoon, while the rest of the bay area will just see a mix of sun and clouds, all staying dry south of the golden gate bridge, with the potential of getting some very light rain amounts for parts of the north bay, but we will see some more rain later on in the week. and then if you're planning to go to the sierra, within the next week or so, we do have several rounds of rain and snow that will be moving in, so there is the potential inches of kingvale. other areas will get about foot of snow for elevations above 5,000 feet. there will be showers in the north bay tomorrow inland, and then for the wednesday and thursday, we're drying out, getting some sunshine. showers on friday, and then again on sunday. i'll have all the latest for you on that. mike, you're tracking a new crash in san jose. >> i am, kari. look behind me, there's slowing for 101. this is one of the bursts of traffic we talk about coming through the area, as far as i
5:51 am
can tell, no crashes for 101. we have all this slowing. it looks like someone tapped those brakes so we'll check between 680 and alum rock. it's here on the map, where you saw the slowing here by the camera, but it looks like something else is going on shy of oakland road. the focus i started to tell you about was this crash over here. we have two crashes, in addition to that one where the slowing must be, north 87 in recovery mode. north 87 at the 101 connector, a big suburban involved in a crash with another vehicle. no injuries reported, but the size of that vehicle caused that connector to be affected for a few minutes, they closed all lanes, cleared them off to the shoulder, that's why you see that slowing. be careful, as you have to hit the brakes perhaps unexpectedly, it could be an issue for slicker roads. we're watching the rest of the bay and no major problems, a little build for the tri valley and over here for the east bay, hayward into union city. behind me, the green highlighting is leftovers from the rain, pushed toward the central valley but still the on and offrarpz will be affected.
5:52 am
we don't is any affect to the transit lanes. b.a.r.t. had a delay. the earlier equipment problems on the warm springs line have been cleared. but the early trains may have a couple minutes delay there. getting through oakland, the volume of traffic is building. no major problems. high street at 880 northbound with the tail lights. it's a smooth drive to the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. back to you, marcus. >> thanks, mike. happening now, you may want to stock up on the postage stamps. the u.s. postal service is proposing a price hike of five cents, making the cost of a first class forever stamp 55 cents. that isri increase since 9 91. if approved the new rates would not go into effect next month. forever stamps will still be valid in the future, rarldless -- regardless of the price you pay for them. coming up, looking for a last-minute christmas goivity? how about a new car. plus the chase that had everyone glued to their television set, an ambulance followed by police. the series of events that led to the chase.
