including a close call overnight for a chp trouper. live report in moments. and is president trump telling the truth when it comes to the russia investigation? a brand new poll from nbc/"wall street journal" showing what americans think. we'll take you to capitol hill as "today in the bay" continues right now. very good monday morning to you. i hope you had a great weekend. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now, we start out with meteorologist kari hall. we'll get the weather this morning. >> it starts out wet, because we had the rain that moved through yesterdaye ed clearing weather as we get a chance to dry out. as you step out the door, let's look at the rain that continues to move away from the bay mobi doppler radar, that's the red scan there we're seeing of our truck parked on san bruno mountain, and still showing some light rain across parts of the north bay, while the south bay seeing some mostly cloudy skies.

the roads are wet, and we will get some sunshine as we go throughout this afternoon. mike, you have more info on the crash in san jose. >> sorting out details just coming in here. the reason why we saw all the traffic jammed up, exactly as we said, judging by that live pattern, there was a crash northbound just north of here, for highway 101 through san jose. that means the backup that we saw on the map there from our camera, all the way up past alum rock avenue and over toward about taylor, there seems to be two crashes there, so we're going to continue to sort through the south bay reports, but other than that, the slicker roadways are what you have to b. north of there, it's just that slippery. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:01. the combination of high tide and powerful surf creating a dangerous mix this morning. the waves are a product of the storm that rolled through the bay area yesterday and into this morning. the high surf warning ends tonight, but we have a crew in pacifica, they were actually just hit by a wave a few minutes ago. they thought they were in a safe location. this shows you how dangerous it can be. now they're moving on to a safer

spot. we'll show you more of that video in a live report in 30 minutes. really took them by surprise. >> absolutely. 6:01 right now. new this morning, a chp officer found himself in the path of a hydroplaning car. this serves as a warning to all of us as we hit the roads that the slick roads are no joke. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez inz jo us li-- joins us with what happened. >> reporter: good morning, laura enamarcus. it was a frightening chain of events and one witness is saying it seems like a domino effect as people were hitting the same pond of water and sliding right on through. let's show you the video of what it looked like earlier this morning at 280 and saratoga, just a few hours ago. the chp officer was stopped at a crash scene assisting drivers when another driver passing by lost control because of the water and hydroplaned into the chp cruiser. that was just the beginning of that dangerous chain reaction. at the time, three of the lanes of 280 right at saratoga were

flooded with as much as four inches of water, and driver after driver ran into trouble. one driver losing control and hit a person who was out of their car. that person went to the hospital by ambulance. in all, as many as seven drivers were involved. crash at the same location, a witness told us he saw other cars lose their bumpers just from hitting the standing water. the drive was just enough to yank their bumpers off the back of their cars. the roadways are slick and there are pools of water on the roadway. we saw them as we were headed in this direction as well so do be careful. if you find yourself sliding out of control, remember, do g and your car to a safe location. don't try to do anythin did py u twitter feed. l out th kris. sanchez, always keep one step ahead of the wild weather, download

our nbc bay area app. it is free and you'll always know what to expect before you head out the door. >> 6:03 right now. in washington, the latest nbc/"wall street journal" poll is out and it's showing that most americans are questioning whether president trump is telling the whole truth on russia. tracie potts is live for us in washington, d.c., this morning. >> good morning. what we know, this investigation seems to be centering around people close to president trump, some of them going to prison. the president's been fighting back hashed. now we know from new poll numbers not everyone, in fact the the majority in this poll don't believe him. in the presidential election? 62% of americans say no, in our latest nbc/"wall street journal" poll. >> more and more people are believing in mueller. fewer and fewer people, as your survey showed, believe the president.

let's get the report, and let's read it, let it go public, and then let us decide. >> reporter: the poll shows half of americans with at least some doubt about the presidency. mr. trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, is headed to prison in part for lying about trying to build a trump skyscraper during the campaign with help from the russian government. >> hiding it from the country, seeking the kremlin's help with it, that's deeply compromising. >> reporter: president trump on twitter calling cohen a rat, and robert mueller's investigation a democratic scam. his lawyer says the president will never talk to mueller now. >> no way, no interview. >> they're a joke. over my dead body. >> reporter: and a pardon for cohen? apparently that's not happening either. >> that liar can say what he wants. i told his lawyers there will be no discussion of a pardon. >> reporter: the president and his supporters continue to point out there's been no evidence of collusion between his campaign and russia. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> 6:05 right now. new findings slam butte county's emergency response system for failing the people of paradise.

new report by the bay area news group finds the morning the firestorm tore through paradise, killing at least 86 people, butte county's early warning system failed at every level. thousands of texts were missed, delayed, and lost. many evacuees say even though they signed up for emergency alerts, they never received them. among the other problems a cellular network that became overwhelmed and too many people weren't signed up for the alerts. all of this as the speed of the fire left no room for error. this morning, we're learning a person of interest is in a series of suspicious fires in hat francisco's golden gate park -year-old anthony wingert was arrested over the weekend. string of fires were all reported within 24 hours in november near polo field and agling pond. "the examiner" reported wingert has not been charged with arson but the police chief said the fires stopped after his arrest.

wingert is ordered to stay at least 150 yards away from golden gate park. right now, police need your help identifying a suspect in a shooting at sun valley mall in concord. officers want you to take a look at these surveillance photos. it happened yesterday afternoon. witnesses tell police a man accidentally dropped a gun near the cinnabon restaurant and picked it up and fired one more time. no one was injured. officers say the suspect left the mall with a woman. >> it is 6:07, if you bra ek ea you buy it. man who demolished a san francisco house is required to rebuild a replica. russ johnson purchased the iconic 1930s home last year. he had received permission to remodel the house, but instead, he chose to demolish it, stating he wanted a bigger home for his family, but the city planning commission is stopping the plans, now ordering him to rebuild the landmark, with a plaque detailing the home's

history. it's not known whether johnson will follow through. right now at 6:08, we have a wet commute this morning, even though the rain for the most part has stopped. here is a live look outside at 580 and dublin, as we get up on the roadways. you may still have to turn on the windshield wipers, as the cars in nt frfront of you kick some of the puddles left on the roads. toward concord we'll get sunshine today, after a chilly start with upper 40s, we're headed into the low 60s today. here you have plans to get out there and enjoy it. let's head toward san jose, the schoolday forecast 50 degrees as you're walking to school. recess upper 50s and upper 50s with sunshine later today. we'll talk about our n incoming chance of rain coming up, and mike, you are updating a crash in san jose. >> i am, this is on the bay shore freeway. i'll give you a big view of the bay, nothing unexpected except for the bottom portion north 101 jammed up coming up toward 680,

and in the air. starting on thursday, the skies will be getting they see a little friendlier. airlines are adding more flights and 143,000 additional seats. per day to make room for the 46 million people who are expected to fly for the holidays. and as busy as it will be in the skies, aaa experts say it will likely be busier on the roads. >> 112 million will be traveling this year, that is the highest travel volume for end of year travel since aaa has bn >> many people will be using the holidays to burn unused vacation time at true vacation hot spots. depending on the weather, new york city on new year's eve might be the destination for holiday travelers this year. new video, do you ever get that feeling the biggest holiday light displays could give night clubs a run for their money? look at this here, check this out, this is the display put on by two teenage brothers in ohio.

how many lights do you think there are? >> 17. i'm not good at this. >> a lot. >> some 30,000 i'm being told there. the boys also needed two extra circuit breakers and they paid for it all themselves. they worked all year long, saving up their money. they say the smiles on the faces really makes all the spending and effort worth it. that's the holiday spirit, put lights up for oert peopther peo to have their house on the news. >> way in the bay area. >> looking good out there. okay, so some rain moved through the bay area. >> we're starting to clear out now. there's going to be a little bit more rain as we go through the rest of the week. i'll be tracking that. not everyone will see the rain we get tomorrow. looking at what you'll see as you get ready to head out for your drive this morning, it's still pretty wet. those roads are dealing with some standing water from all the downpours that we had from the

past i'd say about 12 to 16 hours. looking at emeryville, we are seeing some of the low clouds still misting and drizzling. you can tell it's a soggy start to this monday morning. we've also had lingering light rain as we check out storm ranger, that's our mobile doppler radar showing some light rain moving through parts of marin county and southern sonoma county. we're seeing some of the drizzle in san francisco and also over toward cocoa county this morning, as you get ready to head out, but this system is clearing, pushing off to the east, making that's set to arrive tomorrow. we can see the widespread clouds, that's going to start to move into parts of the north bay tomorrow, but let's take a look at how much rain we measured, some decent totals here, boulder creek in the santa cruz mountains about two and a half inches of rain. mt. tam had an inch and a half. also about the same in pacifica. cloverdale almost two inches of rain, and napa an inch and a half. in san francisco, measuring three-quarters of an inch of

rain. we also saw about three-quarters of an inch of rain in brentwood and el cerrito, and gilroy, measuring an inch and a half. livermore a half inch and about the same in foster city. san jose is pretty good, over an inch of rain so it's muggy out there, as you saw your hair, getting ready for the day, as it clears up later on, it will be gusty so probably not the best hair day and our temperatures will be very comfortable, reaching into the upper 50s and low 60s. this is about normal for this time of year. as we go into the day tomorrow, i'll be tracking some more showers, mostly for the north bay, that starts out looking at about 6:30 tomorrow morning for parts of the north bay, central sonoma, napa, and mendocino, lake county seeing a chance of showers, but that's about the chance of rain only areas that we'll see with the showers coming through. elsewhere, it stays dry. and we'll continue on with some dry weather for the rest of the week, as our temperatures head into the low 60s. friday another chance of rain,

and another one on sunday. i'll track it all for you. headed over to mike, you're tracking out the morning commute. >> we have delays for the south bay, one major part of the san jose commute is highway 101, and we see major amounts of slowing right here. the brake lights are holding steady, just at the top of our shot, just north of 680 toward alum rock. from time to time i see flashing lights and we're looking at the map and we have the slowdown that shows the building up toward mt. mckee, there was a crash blocking your two left lanes. that might have changed in the last couple of minutes. chp has yet to give us an update but you see the build continuing over here aetching approaching tully. different timings you have in the area. from interest the 85 split with 101 up in toward santa clara this route the bt direct that folks will normally take, takes almost an hour, about 53 minutes. i'm saving you about half the time, over half the time if we travel up 87 which is unusual. 87 will begin to build so stay

6:25. the holiday is a busy time for all of us but especially car thieves. >> consumer investigator chris chmura has an alarming finding for us. >> good morning. more cars are stolen on new year's day than any other holiday. thieves boosted about 2,500 cars nationwide on the first day of this year. that's from the national insurance crime bureau. car theft here in the bay area average, according to the fbi. more than 14,000 cars were that is at least one car stolen every hour of every day, and it happens faster than you might think. watch this. that car thief got in and drove off inside of 20 seconds. his joy ride was caught on camera by a bay area company. after "the voice" tonight, we're going to show you how they do

the an actual report shows that kids are vaping nicotine as well as marijuana. doctors say that many also claim that they're just vaping e-liquid flavors. the fda previously declared team vaping an epidemic. the agency is threatening to ban all flavored vaping products unless manufacturers can come up with a solid plan to curb youth use. >> intl sacramento. the findings are part of an audit ordered by governor brown. auditors found the lottery spent $31,000 in swaconference. that inclus $17,000 for baseball bat pins and 14 grand for lotto baseball caps. the audit didn't call the purchases inappropriate. lottery spokesperson tells "the sacramento bee" the items were meant to boost brand awareness. coming up on "today in the bay," top stories we're following this monday morning, including dangerous conditions on the coast. strong winds are kicking up massive waves.

we give you a view from across the bay area. the rain overnight is moving out, but there is plenty of water on the roads. we've already seen multiple crashes, a lot of ponding in some areas, could sneak up on you. be careful as you head out the door. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall with a look at what we can expect for the rest of the day. >> we had some pretty decent rainfall totals overnight. now we are dealing with the aftereffects of that storm that moved through, and for the coastal area, that means the 30 feet today. that wind warning, the wave warning will continue through 9:00 tonight, as we start to see the rain taper off, our storm ranger, mobile doppler radar tracking some spotty rain aless kro t -- across the bay area. widespread heavy rain moved off off to the east. as you get ready to head out the door los gatos today 50 degrees. we'll get some clearing, looking at sunshine today, and comfortable temperatures. i'll have a look ahead for the

rest of the week and weekend. mike, the problem continues in san jose. >> we're looking at the bay, a smooth drive, a little fog developing as far as our road weather index shows in the tri va from the overnight rain that kari has been talking about. in the south bay, this is where the one problem, the big problem for north 101undside, you had your two left lanes blocked by a crash. i saw crews drive through our live shot, travel north past here at port alum rock and mckee. the vehicles should be cleared in the next five to ten minutes, what chp estimates. the brake lights continue to build, this is the big jam, 87 was an alternate, it's building. i'll show that to you coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:33 right now. new this morning, the search is on for the person who caused an overnight crash that sadly left a woman dead. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live along first street in san jose this morning. i understand you got some new information from investigators this morning. >> reporter: they are classifying this as a

hit-and-run, a fatal hit-and-run that happened behind me. we're at north bird street in san jose. the traffic is the on and off ramp to 880, to give you a sense of where we're located. this happened around 12:45. there was a woman dressedn ho wd when she was hit by that drir . the woman was taken to the hospital, where sadly she did die from her injuries. i did speak to a gas station attendant who was here at the time, didn't see or hear it, but he talked to police afterwards. he was under the impression this vehicle was traveling at a very high rate of speed, and police asked to take a look at the surveillance cameras at the gas station. unfortunately, they weren't pointed in that direction. so right now, police do not or at least have not released a suspect vehicle description. we don't know what kind of car or truck or whatever kind of vehicle it is that they are looking for. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. 6:34 right now. a warning for everyone this

morning in the bay area, stay away from the coast. extremely heavy surf is pounding all california beaches. one of our crews actually trying to get that word out to people this morning, they were actually caught as the waves came pounding joen to the shore, causing a bit of a trouble there. sharon katsuda, you and your photographer out there a little too close this morning, but as we can see, you are okay. >> reporter: just a bit. we are okay. thank you for checking on us. yes, we were supposed to go live about an hour ago, but just when we were about to go live, two waves merged and crashed and landed on us, so let me show you where we were. this was about an hour ago, we saw a huge wave crash up right here along the rail, and this is where we usually stand doing live shots. i've covered the big wave stories for about 20 years but this never happened in the past. this time we got caught in it. take a look at what happened. oh!

the waves brought out a lot of curous onlooker this is weekend and along the coast including here in pacifica and in san francisco. the national weather service warns everyone to "stay well back from the ocean or risk certain death." we are seeing a lot of people out here taking a look. i'm going to personally warn them to stay back, until the succession of the pacific storms pushed large swells to the west coast, stretching from california to washington through tomorrow. some surfers are checking it out this morning. >> i wouldn't go out here because it just looks dangerous. the waves aren't really peeling. it's just closing out, coming in and dumping. so yeah, it's just overloaded. it's too big almost, you know? >> reporter: the weather service says with the high surf, there is heightened threat to life and property. i called pacifica police this morning, and they say fortunately overnight there were no reports of damage or injuries or rescues needed, and back here

material support to isis imp is thig -- siympathizers. berkeley high grad amir al hagagi entered a guilty plea in july after originally saying he was not guilty. the fbi says the 23-year-old promised to unleash a wave of violent terror attacks across the bay area. al hagagi opened multiple social media accounts for two isis sympathizers. his attorney said all he did was open the accounts but never he could be sentenced up to nearly 50 years. san jose authorities reportedly turning more often to plan b when it comes to prosecuting gun crimes. plan b is the federal government, in this case. "the mercury news" is reporting police are worrying too many loopholes in california's criminal justice system. they're teaming with fbi agents and federal prosecutors. as a result, violent offenders are receiving harsher sentences and often doing their time out of state. no you to a story getting a lot of attention online this morning, making fun of someone's tragedy cost three construction workers their jobs.

they were hired to clear the wreckage of the camp fire in paradise, but they posted insensitive pictures of homes destroyed and they were fired. one photo showed the men sitting on a burned out rv pretending to drive, another featured a man playing on a burned fire truck toy. one picture was too offensive to show on television. the construction company the men worked for, big crane and rigging, called the incident an abhorrent event. firefighters in portland wanted to make sure that the kids impacted by the camp fire would have presents, so they took a page from santa's playbook there, collected extra toys and this weekend packaged everything up for that long drive south to butte county. there are close to 4,000 toys headed to those kids in paradise. so mike, a great time to say merry christmas. >> we saw a little bit of that video before, and that clown --

yeah, no. over here toward the south bay, san jose, also no for the crash that cleared from the roadway northbound 101 now, quick willy recovery mode. the jam starts way back over approaching story past tully and around mckee is where two lanes were blocked fore me. little sooner t 6:45, but it cleared from the lanes. quick recovery but north 87 look at that, that's really jamming up, folks coming over on capital expressway and taking that as an alternate. so if you're headed to downtown that way, you may have a tougher drive this morning. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive but slick roads, so be careful. >> what about the road to tahoe? that's always a good one, if you're lucky enough to get away. lot of snow in the mountains making for a great weekend for folks who trek up to the sigh yes rah. i-80 at donner summit, the wind is blowing as well. more than a foot of snow in some spots.

a little break in the storm right now. >> right now we have a break and there's going to be several more waves of some bay area rain and sierra snow. we'll see the rain tomorrow morning in the north bay and then again on friday, but by sunday we'll also be tracking another system moving in. if you're making plans, looks like saturday is your day once again, just like this past weekend, where we are going to get some sunshine. san francisco reaching into the upper 50s. if you are going to squaw valley this morn tahoe, we'll see temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s once again. sunny on saturday. by sunday, we'll start to see some of the snow flurries coming down, and yes, this is the last weekend before christmas, so if you're planning to go to the beach or enjoying some of the time outside, it's going to be in the upper 50s at half moon bay. still some of the high waves, but starting to calm down, and some showers moving in again on sunday.

saratoga avenue. the chp officer was stopped to help a car and another car hydroplaned and one car struck a person who had gotten out of their car. the person was taken to the hospital. no update on their condition so far this morning. we do k right now, police need your help identifying a suspect in a shooting at sun valley mall in concord. officers want you to take a good look at the surveillance photos here. this happened yesterday afternoon and witnesses tell police that man accidentally dropped a gun near the cinnabon restaurant, picked it up and that gun fired it one time there. no one was injured. officers say that that suspect left the mall with a woman. >> 6:46 right now. do you remember that romaine lettuce recall? the santa maria farm linked to it is recalling more produce. adams brothers is now recalling red and green leaf lettuce,ing

that he's our mobile doppler radar. the red scan there we have is parked on san bruno mountain, still tracking some mist and drizzle, and also a few low clouds over parts of the north bay and mostly includes marin county, 101 still seeing light showers coming down and parts of southern sonoma county. the heavy rain moved to the east and we'll be watching this system. it's going to start to move in by later tomorrow morning. but let's talk about how much rain we measure with the round that moved through overnight. some of us really got some heavy rain, and the santa cruz mountains, boulder creek 2.5 inches of rain. pacifica an inch and a half and cloverdale almost two inches. napa mesh you aring 1.5 inches and in san francisco 0.75 of an inch. we had three-quarters of an inch of rain in brentwood and el cerrito, livermore reaches half of an inch of rain, about the same in foster city, and san jose pretty decent totals, over an inch.

as you head out the door for school, martinez starts out cool. we get clearing and mostly sunny skiess h as t up today, and that's a look at the beautiful sunrise, about to get under way over san jose as getting dressed, you might want to put on a hat, because it is so humid out there and breezy, too. don't forget that jacket as our temperatures continue to cool off. we'll warm up into the upper 50s and low 60s for our afternoon highs. then by tomorrow, i'll be tracking another system, this one mostly focused on the north bay. we will see some scattered showers moving through parts of mendocino and lake counties and maybe northern sonoma county, but that looks to be the extent of the rain that will be moving through and we all continue on with some dry weather for the rest of the week, with some highs in the low 60s. anotherain in the forecast on friday. mike, you're looking at two accidents near our bridges? >> yes, we have incidents near two of our very important bridges on the commute right here. the bay bridge, there is a stall

reported, no visibility, no visible issue for this approach, except for the backup, but there is a stall reported somewhere around the toll plaza. again, i see the lanes flowing all of them do move very slowly. getting through cocoa yunt ai and contra costa county a smooth drive. be aware that it is building coming off of highway 4, where you see slowing into concord, out of pittsburgh and bay point. we're moving the map south, build for 101 and 87. the crash on 101 cleared around mckee, why things are extra slow approaching capital expressway. over here there is the dumbarton bridge, really slowing down now. the problem is over at university, bayfront expressway there's a problem with one of the signals, the major signal by facebook i believe, backing traffic up westbound. you can use the san mateo bridge that might be faster if you're headed over on to the peninsula. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:53 right now. happening now, you may want to stock up on postage stamps.

in san jose. police don't have a suspect description. first street was shut down for a few hours. it is now back open. new this morning, a woman is in the hospital with serious injuries. this is after a late night solo crash on highway 237. it happened nearzanker road in san jose. firefighter s say her car went off the road and struck a tree. the woman was sent to a nearby trauma center. her condition not known right now. we also do not know yet if wet roads factored into that crash. at 6:57, a word of warning to you this morning along the coast. extreme conditions there causing massive waves. >> that's right, the big waves caught our crews off guard. they thought they were in a safe location earlier this morning. as you can see, how quickly things can change. huge wave crashed on shore, hitting our crew. they're okay, but here's what happened about an hour ago.
