good thursday morning to you. as we look across the bay area and see the consistent thing, fog. fog, fog, fog, fog. that's pretty much san jose, san francisco and san rafael. thank you for starting your morning with us on "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> that fog is the ground level kind. it makes it hard to drive in. >> it is. it's in patches. it was in the tri-valley, and mill pa milpitas. downtown san jose blanketed with some fog. we're down to about a quarter of

a mile visibility. also for the peninsula. watch out for that. you can see livermore still has clear visibility there. also in san francisco. as we go through the day, we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds. checking out our warm springs b.a.r.t. forecast, it will be in the upper 40s as you head out the door. we'll talk about rain ahead. a crash and fog? >> the fog will register, the denser fog, which sticks around for enough time for the sensors to read. south 680, there's a crash on the shoulder. anything going on in limited visibility will be more of a risk as far as your driving conditions. that continues coming down through fremont and into the south bay. there's a new crash reported outside of sunol and fremont. a look at the san jose camera, live from 101.

you can make these cars out. as i came up from the area, people were slamming on the brakes because of work cruise and flashing lights as well as cars they recognize. that's chp. just slow it down in general. back to you. breaking news to tell you about. drones have stopped flying at a busy london airport. gatwick shut down. >> thousands of passengers are told to be tight while they figure out who is flying those drones. police do not want to shoot the drones down because of the risk of stray bullets. they do not believe this to be terror-related but passengers are super frustrated. >> there was a drone on the edge. the plane has been diverted. >> gatwick first closed last night when the drones were sighted. it reopened this morning and shut back down when the drones were spotted again. authorities were investigating whether a drone slammed into a plane as it landed in tijuana.

an early morning fire tears through a home in newark. officials say this happened in the kitchen. firefighters battled those flames around 2:30 this morning. we're gelling reports that four people lived in the home. at this time we do not know their condition. continuing coverage for you. a mother hoping to see her ailing son is on u.s. soil. the scene last night at sfo as police escorted the mother to children's hospital in oakland. >> her 2-year-old son is on life support with a few days to live. only a waiver from the state department is allowing her to travel here. she is living in yemen and her husband is a u.s. citizen. for months they tried to obtain a u.s. visa but because yemen is

on president trump's travel ban, she was not allowed. her son was put on life support when her son had a rare brain disorder. >> i ask you to respect our privacy as we go with our son again. >> they've been waiting for our january since january of 2018. >> it took three u.s. lawmakers getting involved, including barbara lee and jeremy mcnerny to grant that waiver. 4:34 now. did you see this yesterday? it was a streak of light captured as that -- captured on camera and that captured the imagination and led to a lot of speculation last night. a lot of folks are wondering if that mysterious object was a rocket, perhaps a cloud formation. experts are pointing to another explanation. they analyzed plenty of photos and videos and say it was a

meteor. it left behind a strange trail. >> reporter: for hours it was the mystery in the sky. thousands of images and questions pouring in from the central valley to the south bay. the flash and streak of light seen from reno and in san francisco. >> probably a falling star or something because it kind of left a halo in the sky after it went down. san francisco, for all you know it's a drone, too. >> looks like clouds. who knows. >> reporter: there were theories to rule out. v vandenberg had a launch scheduled at that time but it's believed it was some type of meteor. >> it looks like a meteor fireball. or it could be a meteor that explodes on its finish.

why the odd trail? photos show the spiraling remains over the ocean west of carmel and swirling before evaporating from view after 12 minutes. >> after that occurred it was a straight trail in the sky and then we had wind pick up near that and that helped move the clouds around and create this looping effect. >> scientists say they travel at about 45,000 miles an hour creating that bright light and then they believe it broke up before landing into the ocean. crossing into the golden gate bridge could cost you ten bucks. the bridge district says an increase is needed to make an expected $75 million deficit. under the proposal fast track drivers would see the smallest increase. if approved, we could see the rate hike starting in july of next year.

i'm frank holland from cnbc global headquarters. wall street could see more red arrows this morning after stocks fell yesterday following the fed's decision to raise interest rates for the fourth time this year. markets reacted to signals by the fed that it will be less aggressive than raising rates next year but it's also forecasting the economy may slow down. the dow falling more than 300 points to its lowest close of the year. how does the fed's latest rate hike impact your wallet? it depends if you're saving money or borrowing money. safers made no money on the year in their statement accounts and money market, accounts. that's changing as it's improving on accounts. for those that carry variable debts like credit cards it could be more expensive with each rate hike. student loans and mortgages tend to follow the same general direction as the fed's benchmark rate. experts say a fed hike can show up as one or two billing cycles later on your credit card.

facebook. i was like to turn and i was like, wait a minute. this is not my street. it's really bad out there. you do need to slow down. here's a look at the golden gate bridge where visibility is not bad but you'll drive in and out of the fog around the bay area. some of the bay area don't always see this kind of fog like parts of the peninsula, mountain view and down to the south county where visibility is down to a quarter of a mile. not so bad in the tri-valley but there may be light patches of fog there as you head out the door. let's head out the door in antioch where it's still going to be cloudy or a cool start as you crank up the heater. we're in the mid-40s throughout 8:00 and gradually starting to warm up. mostly cloudy throughout the morning. here's another look at that view of christmas in the park. and that dense fog out there. as get dressed you do need something nice and warm. throw on a hat. it's so muggy out there. don't even bother trying to

style your hair today. we'll see temperatures reaching into the upper 50s, the low 60s for the south bay. we'll see a high of about 60 in gilroy. in danville, 59 degrees. 57 in san mateo. u upper 50s in the north bay. as we track a couple of storm systems, this one set to arrive tomorrow and another one that will bring in more significant rain by the end of the weekend. then as we look at the rain that starts to move in later on as we go into this evening for the north bay, as it approaches san francisco, most falls apart. we'll see this rain across the north bay. slight chance of rain elsewhere and clearing out for the first day of winter, which begins tomorrow. saturday also looking partly cloudy and then a heavier round of rain starts to work its way into the bay area going north to south starting to sunday evening and continuing through your christmas eve.

once again, the rain that moves in through the overnight hours won't bring much rain except for y ukiah getting a tenth of an inch of rain. saturday is your dry day. we'll have to watch out for king tides. those are the high astronomical tides, high and low tides because of the pull of the moon. the gravitational pull of the moon. that will cause possibly coastal flooding. i'll have more updates on that. mike, you have a foggy view of what it looks like for drivers. >> exactly. we're joining ethan out there. he's driving on 880 going south through san jose towards highway 17 off 880. you see he's all right as far as his view of the immediate highway but you can see the fog and the glow off the roadway. from time to time it will be much worse for visibility. ethan is traveling here.

880 into 217. you see the yellow highlighting which we saw last week. this is not -- often not the case. we'll see the fog here in the south bay and peninsula. usually it's in the tri-valley where kari drove through and said it was fine earlier. randy also said it was fine until he got to san joe jose. we'll be checking with ethan from time to time. highway 4 through contra costa county, we expect to see the first slowing. right now it's not a problem through antioch, pittsburg, san pablo just fine as interstate 80 over to the bay bridge. look at this. you can clearly see the toll plaza and the lanes are right. you can see the low clouds. it's just about ten to 5:00.

dust, diesel fumes, all causing a stir on the streets of cupertino. the city leaders are holding a meeting and they just did first one last night. >> we're talking about stevens creek and foothill boulevards near cupertino. there's been an increase in mining trucks there. nbc bay area visited the area that neighbors say is a trouble spot. >> reporter: this is stevens creek quarry. it's operated here for more than 80 years and this year it struck a deal with lehigh plant. neighbors say the trucks are causing a ruckus. >> i'm focused on safety but there are so many other issues. >> there's dust, pollution, thousands of big rig trucks. >> reporter: these two were among the room full of fed-up

neighbors. santa clara shut down a private road between the two facilities because it's not properly permitted and potentially unsafe. until an alternate road is built, they are using city streets. >> i think it's time to start scaling down the industrial uses of this area. and if we can scale them down by half, by closing one of the two quarries, it's time to close one of the two quarries. >> reporter: not everyone agrees. at the quarry, i talked with one neighbor who supports the local businesses. >> we all knew it was here when we moved here. you can't move into the neighborhood when you have something like this and complain about the operations. a representative from the quarry was at the meeting last night but did not address the crowd's concerns. the city and county say it will take some time before they can actually come up with a solution to the increased truck traffic. it's 4:51. >> a refurbished gift might not

compared to yesterday at this time. the visibility in the north bay at 9 miles, which is almost clear up. head down to oakland and you see it's zero. it's also zero in san martin and we're down to a quarter of a mile in san jose and in san carlo. we'll talk about what's ahead. it's hard to see on the roads. >> that's what we're talking about. a little more unusual distribution. we typically see fog in the north bay and over here, while that's what we see, it's just crept into oakland where the visibility has gone down to zero. very tough for 880 and 580. highway 30 getting in towards the maze. no problems reported early in the commute. the peninsula off san mateo, 280 into silicon valley as well. let's get a live view out there. our photographer is out there driving. he found a clear patch. this is traveling north into fremont. it's actually okay north of
