fog, and san francisco is one of them. this is what the live cam looks like, 48 degrees right now. we are seeing some pretty good areas of fog in there. santa rosa, 33 degrees this morning. napa, 37. 48 for san francisco. low 40s in san jose at 44 degrees. let's take a look at the fog invisibility because it looks like the worst visibility is in napa. all of this fog will burn off into the afternoon, and that's going to make way for a very lovely and mostly clear afternoon. our temperatures cooler this morning, about 57 degrees, topping out into the low 60s. of course we're tracking the king tides this morning. we're talking about a coastal flood advisory that will remain in effect through today. i'll go through king tides and we have some changes ahead of christmas eve and christmas day. very important. we'll have that forecast in 15 minutes. >> see you in 15, vianey. after a seven-hour backup,

one freeway is open again in the south bay after a tanker truck overturned. it happened at 6:30 last night where 280 and 880 meet near stevens creek boulevard in san jose. emergency crews could smell gas and in the tank 8,000 gallons of propane. took crews more than seven hours. because propane is a potentially hazardous material, the chp and other police agencies had to shut down all the freeway interchanges and onramps within a half mile radius. traffic was backed up for several miles during a busy friday night commute. drivers were diverted onto surface streets. at this hour, a quarter of the federal government is shut down. here's a live look at the capitol building in d.c. president trump and lawmakers could not reach an agreement on

funding for the border wall. that stalemate translates into a few tense few days ahead as talks do continue. but hundreds of thousands of federal employees are now wondering how long their shutdown will last and whether they will get a paycheck. blayne alexander has the latest from washington. >> reporter: congress heading home without reaching a deal. >> the senate is adjourned. >> reporter: meaning a shutdown at the stroke of midnight. what's next? >> i hope senate democrats will work with the white house on an agreement that can pass both houses of congress. >> reporter: an agreement to keep working toward a deal that satisfies both parties and president trump, who was demanding money for a border wall and pinning blame on democrats. >> we're going to have a shutdown. there's nothing we can do about that because we need the democrats to give us their votes. >> reporter: despite saying this just last week. >> so i will take the mantel.

i will be the one who-to-shut it down. i'm not going to blame you for it. >> vice president pence with other officials on the hill trying to bridge the gap, meeting with lawmakers. those talks expected to continue through the weekend. >> to suggest that a deal is imminent would not be appropriate, but i can tell you that everybody is trying to look for a breakthrough. >> reporter: who really feels the effects of a parable shutdown? some 7 50,000 federal employees wills their paychecks delays or work for free. no interruption to u.s. mail service. and tsa agents will still work during the holiday rush, but without pay until the shutdown ends. blayne alexander, nbc news, washington >> anticipation of that shutdown led the dow to plunge more than 400 points yesterday. the federal reserve's rate hike on wednesday also helped drive this week's losses. back here locally a rare attack in a palo alto

neighborhood. thankfully, good samaritans stepped in to help. police report a woman was walking around 6:00 thursday night when a man jumped out behind her, covered her mouth with his hands. he pushed her down into the bushes. when the woman started screaming, the man repeatedly punched her in the face. neighbors heard her screams and ran outside to help. the man took off. things are expected to be back to normal on b.a.r.t. this morning after a chaotic commute yesterday afternoon. witnesses say they heard shots ring out at the daly city b.a.r.t. station at 3:00. two sam transbuses were hit. thankfully there was no one on board. police say so far no victims have come forward, but no arrests have been made. b.a.r.t. trains were delayed for just about an hour. as drivers clog the highways getting to their holiday destinies, the california highway patrol will be out looking for impaired and distracted drivers. they say interestingly their work will be a little bit more

difficult now that marijuana is legal in california. chp officer sean dice is a drug recognition expert for the highway patrol. he's trained to detect if a driver is high on marijuana, alcohol, or prescription drugs. officers will be out in force like every holiday season looking for signs of impaired driving. >> somebody may be sweating when it's cold outside. they may be mumbling, act jittery or extremely nervous. those are just outside ways to be able to tell if somebody's impaired. >> last year on christmas eve officer andrew cammalleri was killed and his partner injured as they were making a stop along interstate 880 in hayward. drivers collided with others while high on marijuana is up by close to 40%. a march to honor those who died on san francisco city streets. more than 100 people gathered last night at city hall for a vigil and call to action to stop homelessness in the city.

the group carried banners with the names of the people who died homeless on the streets of the city. organizers say naming the victims is especially important. >> we made these beautiful banners to delay people's names. i think that is really important that they are not just numbers. these are people. the demonstration was organized by sky watchers at the community artist group in the tenderloin. we have much more ahead in "today in the bay." coming up, the raiders in san francisco? how bay area fans are feeling about the possible move to at&t park. a priceless ring almost lost forever at a local costco. how employees came to the rescue.

francisco . welcome back on your saturday morning. it is 7:14. a beautiful look at some clouds and fog lingering over san francisco. you can see that cotton candy pink trying to peek through. the good news is we should have some sunshine across the bay today. no rain. so if you want to get out there, today is the day to do it. a cluster of mailboxes ripped out of the ground by thieves has been reinstalled by the postal service and is back in service. deputies say thieves stole the entire collector and then

ditched it near the curtner light rail station. deputies found it while patrolling the area. a truck pulls up to the boxes in the upscale willow glen neighborhood and then drive away with the entire mailbox in the back. there was just holiday cards in there and letters. no word whether any mail was missing when the mailbox was finally returned. if you have crab on your menu for christmas dinner, you may need to opt for something else. there is a crab shortage in san francisco just days before christmas with dangerous weather and the recent string of storms, not enough boats are coming to our area from the north. swells in recent weeks have surged to more than 40 feet or more. customers are leaving crab shops empty handed. >> this is one of my favorite crab stores and walked in, thought we were going to grab some crabs and take them back to the east bay. there's no crabs left.

>>, however, if you did complete your order by november, we're told your order will be fulfilled and you should be fine. a mountain view woman is calling it a christmas miracle. she lost her late husband's wedding ring at costco and lost all hope. it's a massive store but employees got to work and saved the day. "today in the bay"'s ian cole has the story. >> reporter: seven years ago this woman lost her husband c.j. when he was hit and killed cycling to work on valentine's day. his birthday was tuesday and she was wearing his ring to honor him. >> the significance of just our marriage and keeping that love and life in my life is something that i really try to do. >> reporter: for no reason that day she stopped by costco to look around, but left empty handed. >> the moment that i realized it was gone, my heart just dropped. >> reporter: the next morning the ring was missing. she searched her house and costco with no luck.

she left the store in tears having no employees that the manager spent four hours combing through building and found the ring under a clothing table. >> the fact that they just stopped what they were doing. this ring was with like a needle in a haystack. >> reporter: the good news traveled across the store and to customers. >> it's the perfect christmas story. >> the next day she brought doughnuts because after all that grief, they delivered a gift. >> they were even tearing up and i forced them. i'm giving you a hug because it really meant the world to me. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. >> so he so on happy they found that. >> it's the best story. we were just talking through that whole thing. there could not be a better story to show three days before christmas. thank goodness for those wonderful people who found it. >> i lost something, not as important as that, but it's

really a factor. we don't have any really windy conditions. oakland, very light. but we have patchy fog areas, so limited visibility again. just slow it down, drive safe out there. it will burn off by the afternoon. let's take you on a tour of the bay area. 59 for san jose. 58 for milpitas. morgan hill, 59. look at your east bay temperatures, upper 50s in oakland, 57. concord area and interior valley, 62 degrees. our temperatures will actually be nice and cool today. we're only going to get cooler towards the work week, definitely time to head out those heavy christmas sweaters. 58 degrees in san mateo. daly city, 56. let's talk about those king tides. we've been talking about this for quite some time now. of course you've already seen major swells. there is a coastal flood advisory through noon today. it's already kind of kicked in. high tides will varily y by

location. coastal flood advisory for all the highlighted areas in through here. keep in mind if you're headed to the beach or visiting family and you got to get a look at the coast, just keep it safe. let's look at future cast because we are tracking a trough that's going to sweep on in. this is expected to move on in late tomorrow night into christmas eve early morning. now, we do see a bit of moisture coming through, but as of right now looks like the majority of that rain is going to stay to the north and east. but we will get a chance of showers. as far as rain totals go, early into monday morning and through possibly even early christmas morning, very early, very slight chance. anywhere from 0.1 to 0.5 inches. there will be a winter storm watch in effect for the sierra mountains. if you're driving out sunday night into tuesday, please be

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas has this story. >> the star of our story is kerry stimpson, a san mateo woman who has tried a number of careers but always came back to makeup. it's just her passion. what makes her part of a bay area proud story, though, is she's using that passion to do good.

>> can you just relax? >> reporter: to understand why she's here at the stanford cancer center doing makeup for patients receiving treatment -- >> you really do have lovely skin. >> reporter: you first have to understand her core belief about makeup. it's not about covering up or concealing. >> and a little bit here. >> reporter: it's the opposite, really. it's about revealing. >> you do this rejuvenating, this uplifting treatment with them, you put on a bit of color and you give them the mirror and they go, oh, there i am. >> reporter: she says doing makeup has been a part of her life for a long time. it was, she says, the ice breaker that first helped her connect with others as a teenager. >> because if you know how to put on eyeliner, nobody else does, you will get invited to parties. >> reporter: makeup evolved into a career.

but in her mind, the person underneath was always more important than what she put on them. >> you're trying to show them how beautiful they are if they have lost sight of it. >> reporter: it is why when she heard about lipstick angels, she wanted in immediately. providing free makeup and skin care sessions to cancer patients. >> it's so obvious that my whole career was building up to this. >> go in with a bit of color. >> reporter: at the very least the sessions are a distraction but she's revealed it to be so much more. >> it's not like look how pretty like, they do look pretty, but a lot of it is self-recognition. it's not me, not that sick person. and i think that can be so uplifting and i see that. i see just the energy light up in people.

no interruption to u.s. mail service, and tsa agents will still work during the holiday travel rush, but without pay until the shutdown ends. blayne alexander, nbc news, washington. this weekend supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg is recovering from surgery to remove cancer. the 85-year-old justice had two small malignant gratuitous removed from her left lung yesterday. the early stage lung cancer was found after he fractured her ribs in a recent fall. scans show no evidence of disease elsewhere so she won't have to go through further treatment. this is her third battle with cancer since joining the supreme court in 1993. two people have been arrested in those drone sightings that shut down england's london gatwick airport. they had to suspend flights twice because drones were spotted in the area. the flights have resumed, but the two-day shutdown caused 155 flights to be canceled.

it was the worst airport closure in history caused by a drone. back here in the bay area, an unpleasant surprise for holiday shoppers in san francisco, robbers hit them with pepper spray in the heart of union square. >> suspects sprayed mace inside the store. several people are having a hard time breathing. >> that was a police dispatch call that went out after thieves awkward into urban outfitters on powell thursday night. three women sprayed customers with mace. during the class that followed, they stole a bunch of clothes. shoppers admit they were shocked, but it won't keep them from finishing their shopping list. >> you just don't know when it could happen. you can't really stop living life because these types of things. >> urban outfitters is ready in case someone tries it again. already up are new security cameras and a security guard is posted out front. a lot of questions in sunnyvale after our exclusive

report, a police officer made a porn video with her husband. she's not in trouble, but the officers who passed around the video are. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo broke the story and has new details. >> reporter: nbc bay area is not naming female officer in the explosive allegations, but sources tell us she live streamed a sex scene with her husband on porn hub.com before sunnyvale police recruited her. some people in sunnyvale don't think it's a big deal. >> no, it doesn't matter, not tall. >> but i informally asked five bay area police chiefs if they would hire an officer who was once involved in a porn video, all said no. >> we need to be held at a higher standard. >> he now performs background checks and says it's not that difficult to find out if a candidate was once in porn, especially with the extensive police background checks. >> it's an investigator's job to

find out other people, do you know somebody else that may know something about mark garcia, yeah, i know this person. >> reporter: the sunnyvale as far as didn't have trouble finding the video. sources say two have been fired and two others suspend for sharing it to work. the female officer in the video remains a sunnyvale cop today. on thursday the department said the city doesn't maintain a specific policy on distributing pornography at work. today the office says it has no change to change that. stating the city already has several policies in place that could be applicable to an election involving viewing or distributing pornography to work depending on specific facts of a particular case. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. as drivers pack the highways getting to their holiday destinies, the chp will be out on the roads looking for impaired and distracted drivers. they tell us their job is a little more difficult this holiday season now that marijuana is legal in california.

welcome back. you might be enjoying some time off work during the holidays, but authorities are warning that car thieves aren't taking any time off. more cars are stolen on new year's day than any other holiday. consumer investigator chris chmura has some ideas to help

protect your car. >> that new year's statistic is sittin astounding. we went looking for ways you can fight thieves. and we didn't have to look very far. we're showing you three innovations from bay area companies, a gps insurance going to, a license tag and a camera that can feel a felony in progress. you're watching a car thief in action. the boosting bunch has been incredibly busy this year. by the end of december they will have stolen 14,000 cars around the bay area according to the fbi. even if your ride stays put, you're still paying a price for car theft through higher insurance rates. but you can fight back with technology hatched right here in the bay area. >> what we've seen at least a few dozen car thieves be

identified and arrested. >> andy hodge is founder of owl cameras in pathologicalo alto. the camera contains sensors that can recognize a break-in. any sudden jolt starts the camera running. >> it's a camera, it's a camera. >> that video live extremstream your phone and is stored on the cloud. >> you're hoping that a criminal sees that camera and goes, i'm moving to the next car? >> yeah. we see a lot of people breaking into cars when people send us the video back. and you can tell they didn't know one of these existed. they look up and pretty much had this look that goes, oh. >> another new idea to prevent grand theft auto taps into california's quirky obsession with sending messages on license

plates. >> we can actually show stolen on the plate. >> rereviser makes the r plate that can morph when your car is in the wrong hands. >> once you find out your car is gone, we'll know where it is because it has gps. >> reporter: if a thief tries to pry the plate off your bumper, you'll get an alert. another going to tries to block car thieves in a roundabout way. >> it powers it and it works. >> reporter: san francisco start up uses these small trackers to figure out how much you owe. it goes wherever your car goes, which means if someone takes italy on a joyride, metro mile can track exactly where it went. >> you just call us up, ask where the car is and we help you find it. >> deterrence is the key but it comes at a price. the owl cam is $350 plus an

annual fee. metro mile's rates vary based on how much you drive. there are, however, free steps. i know it sounds obvious, but always lock your doors. never leave anything in plain sight and park in a busy, well-lit area. please call us or visit nbcbayarea.com. >> good tips there. google is trying to figure out how to stop people from attacking its self-driving cars. it all started in 2016 when google began testing its self-driving waymo vans outside phoenix, arizona. since then people have been caught harassing the vans and their drivers. people have slashed tires, thrown racks. google has to train its test drivers to handle threats. in one instance a man waved a

up and soliciting attention from those that she knows and interacts with on a daily basis. >> she's learning that love and affection are wonderful. you've only had her for a month, so that's a pretty good thing for her to switch so quickly, right? >> one thing that's helped with her as well is she has a roommate. she lives with another little chihuahua mix, so they bring each other comfort while they're staying with pets in need. >> she's up for adoption. what kind of home would be good for her? >> the best home would be one with older children and one that is willing to go at her pace, learn to gain her trust and then go from there. >> someone with patience. she's one-year old. she's part of an adoption special we've been talking about going for nine days. >> $31, puppies, kittens, cats,
