we're at 37 in napa and 38 in livermore. 45 in palo alto and more balmy in half moon bay, 52. over in walnut creek, it starts out at 48 degrees. we'll get a lot of sunshine with breezy winds and look at all of our microclimates coming up and mike, you're tracking a car fire. >> i am. light traffic overall, you saw that at the going going there, car fire over here to the north. top of the screen it's blocked by where it says real time traffic. we're talking about no speed sensors slowing but westbound 37 at scags island road we have a crash. it's called fresh air bridge, it's more of a landmark so we gave folks that marker traveling to the area. the rest of the bay shows a light, easy drive. we expect the morning commute to be light but we'll track that of course for the changes. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we're headed into day five of the partial government shutdown. president trump says is will not

be over inle he has funding for a border wall. some 800,000 federal employees are in limbo not getting paid and that blame game in washington is putting a damper on business in the bay area. >> it's slowing down operation at some san francisco landmarks. sam brock reports from the iconic golden gate bridge. >> it's been years and years, i've been watching this and as an ordinary citizen who pays taxes, i'm getting tired of it. >> reporter: dave walker traveled thousands of miles from charleston, south carolina, to take in a sacred san francisco space, noor woods and its wonders. he and his wife melissa are thrilled the park is open and booming, they're wondering what toll the government shutdown is taking. >> i feel bad for those not getting paid, who have no income for how long. >> a credit to the employees who are out here, understanding the situation, and they don't want other people to be affected by it. they don't have to be here. >> reporter: we couldn't confirm with the park service whether these employees are gettingcomp

shutdown. but elsewhere, warnings of washington stalemate pop up all over the place from a bustling four point closed to through-traffic to chain-link covered parking lots at land lookout. >> it's crowded and with the parking lots closed, we had to circle around to find parking and people are parking illegally. >> just sad that grown people can't come to some type of compromise. you know, they're adults, you know. >> reporter: as san francisco and its many visitors wait for things to thaw out, park rangers continue their patrols and primary objective of keeping people safe. sam brock, "nbc bay area news." new this morning, contra costa county will review the first five inmate deaths at its county jails this year. theical reasons. man died from a heroin overdose days after he was booked into jail. it's not clear if the other deaths are drug hanged

herself in her cell. there is a hearing on january 3rd where jail official its are expected to testify. an east bay couple is out of their home this morning after it was overcome by flames. firefighters say the people living there are in their late 80s. they were able to get out safely. the flames broke out at a home on first avenue in walnut creek yesterday afternoon. investigators say the fire appears to have started in the garage. they think a car parked inside had mechanical issues and sparked a fire. those flames quickly spread to the attic and kitchen. we're learning more about a deadly officer-involved shooting in san jose. police think the people involved may have been connected with another shooting. this all happened early yesterday morning near kelly park. officers found two people there who had been a female suspect driving away. the driver led them on a chase that ended at the intersection of lee and fruitdale, when the woman crashed the car into a fence. police say s a

another woman who was in the car. chief eddie garcia plans to hold a news conference on this case tomorrow afternoon. now to a deadly crash in the east bay which happened yesterday morning on cummings highway north of state route 4 martinez. the chp says the driver of a ford drifted out of a lane, then overcorrected and crossed into oncoming traffic that crashed head-on into a nissan, killing the driver of the nissan. the chp is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor. you will be paying more to cross bay area bridges, and the votes are in now for a toll hike. >> starting january 1st, drivers will pay anxt $1 on all bridges, that's according to the bay area toll authority. they say it will crosshe bay br. all others will cost $6. the toll authority says this is the first hike in nine years. >> nine years, doesn't seem like that. coming up on "today in the bay," shoppers showed up some holidays, the reason people

from the christmas holiday. stocks sold off sharply on monday in what was the market's worst performance ever on christmas eve. the dow dropping more than 600 points while the s&p 500 closed in bear territory, that means it's down 20% from its most recent highs, a steep fall there. worries about the global economy, rising interest rates and political uncertainty in washington really continue to weigh on stocks. with many investors out of the office this week, volume is the examined to be low, which could exaggerate any market moves. back to the holiday shopping season, shoppers delivered for retailers in the final stretch before christmas. early numbers from mastercard 5 between december 1st and 24th the biggest increase in six ears. sell-off and government shutdown is not curbing consumer spending or confidence. for the 12th straight year, gift cards were one of the most requested items. here are a few tips how to best

52 in half moon bay. some of the temperatures are much colder than yesterday. if you were out this early, now it's ten degrees colder in livermore than it was than where we started yesterday morning. so as we are going to get a cool start to the day, and a lot of people starting out the week, drab grab a coat and be comfortable with long sleeves and pants on your way out to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. for a lot of people, it's back to work so starting out with mid-40s there. at least we'll have a very nice afternoon, but the temperatures will be slow to climb. we'll reach up to about 54 at lunch timetempature this is aft with downtown san jose reaching 59 degrees. we'll be up there but most of us will be in the upper 50s today and still only a few low 60s here and some pretty brisk winds coming in from the north at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. daly city 58 degrees and 58 degrees in the rah rena district. north bay up to 58 in mill

valley and 59 in sonoma. our seven-day forecast for the first day of kwanzaa will be up to 58 degrees for most of our inland areas and we still will have some gusty winds, cool mornings and very cold on saturday morning. we may even have some freezing temperatures. i'll be watching out for a slight chance of showers in the north bay on sunday. other than that, we have some very dry weather over the next seven days, as we get ready to welcome in the new year. and mike, now you have a crash in the south bay? >> i do, kari. happy kwanzaa to everybody. we'll cra easy drive, except for eastbound 237, a crash is in the south bay around great america parkway, reportedly in the slow lane, but we haven't seen any slowing and chp isn't concerned about the severity of it. of course they are headed out to the scene. as we look at the bay bridge, we have a light volume of traffic. we just showed a couple shots of the going going, very light there, we couldn't find any cars traveling across, but we know

there's activity. there is that crash we still monitor west 37 over there around scags island, what commute we do have, in the commute direction. drive times toward the bay bridge at their minimum, 13 minutes, we almost never see that during the course of our show. highway 4 to the berkeley curve, and minor wait for a couple of folks if you're headed to the cash lanes. this is the richmond to san rafael bridge. the richmond side so a drive, very close shot, we're zoomed in a little more over there. we're zoomed out over here, this is our fremont shot, this is how light the nimitz freeway is and noajor been observing that holiday last night into today. no overnight closures. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. mike? 4:48 right now. only on nbc bay area, many memories were made this christmas season, but for one south bay man, they are just beginning, after a new discovery. >> sargon isaac lives in san

jose now but he was a touring musician in the 1970s in england. he didn't have children, he wasn't married or thought he didn't have children. follow along here. turns out a woman reached out to isaac's cousin earlier this year, after an ancestry dna kit match. she was looking for her father. isaac saw her. ic tours apictures and he said i was her dad." yesterday he spent christmas with his 41-year-old newly found daughter, kelly wilson, for the very first time. >> i'm thankful for her. it's my best christmas ever. >> imagine that. wilson says her mom never told her who her biological father was. she doesn't blame anybody, she says. she's after decades apart. wow! >> beautiful thing there. 4:49 right now. dozens of south bay residents spent several hours christmas day helping others in the commute. it's a christmas tradition put on by san jose city team a

normalcy to where they're sitting down, they're being served by these beautiful volunteers that are in here and then they get to sit back, watch tv, listen to music,shoes, gecu. >> reporter: scott budman, "nbc bay area news." live pictures of downtown san jose, where it looks like christmas in the park is still shining bright but it's not quite what it looks like, if you're seeing something today you're out of luck because christmas in the park ended yesterday. itak room for college football championship festivities downtown which are happening very soon. the game itself will be held at levi's stadium on january 7th. looking forward to that. the christmas season is a time for giving, and for some volunteers that means giving meals to bay area families. volunteers from the salvation army cooked up more than 4,000 meals for the hungry yesterday and they bagged up 1,500 pounds of ham, a ton of peas and sweet

trouble with her mobile phone bill. >> she said she was paying more than she bargain beganed for. consumer investigator lked into was going on here. >> paly ergency and missed one payment. patricia says at&t agreed to waive at least one late fee, she got hit with another anyway and decided not to pay that one. the late fees began to pile up. patricia says she made several calls to at&t to sort it out, but the bills just kept on growing, reaching nearly 200 bucks total. that's when she turned to us. we asked at&t to take another look, and it did. at&t agreed to waive all those late fees. it also cut patricia's monthly bill and even threw in an additional $150 credit. patricia told us in the end, that saved her $623. in a statement, at&t told us, we apologize to the customer credid her account as a resolution. got a consumer problem, call us
