out the door. we'll continue to see our seasonable weather as we head through the rest of the year. here is a live look outside in fremont, 880, everything looks great, no fog. actually that's palo alto looking at highway 101. we are going to see temperatures start out in the upper 40s, headed into the mid-50s today. here is a look at all of our microclimates and what to expect today. more weather that continues like we see all week long. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. vianey, how are the roads moving? >> i told marcus that it may or may not be a good commute. it is a good friday light commute. i wanted to keep you in suspense. couple warningsed to up on the roads. this one i told you i was going to check on it, it popped up as i was doing my last report. the right-hand shoulder is blocked but no major slowing in terms of the speed sensors. if you're driving to burlingame you should be okay. i haven't seen anything too big. so good commute.

back to you. the government shutdown is going into the seventh day. hundreds of thousands of government worker also st eers home again. scott mcfarland, you've been checking on this all week long and it looks like a new congress which is taking over in a few days will have to deal with all this. >> such a contrast from the government shutdown i covered five years ago. members were congress were here debating, having press conferences, try igto litigate this in public. this time congress is out of town, the shutdown will go to the new year and probably until next thursday, with the new congress. >> the senate stands adjourned until 10:00 a.m. on monday, december the 31st. >> reporter: at the capitol, congress punted all proceedings and votes until at least next week, which means the hallways here are as empty as those in many of the nation's federal buildings and national parks, many of which will remain closed

today, from california through the east coast. >> i hope it doesn't take weeks. it's been far too long for the government worker. >> reporter: back from his unannounced trip to iraq, president trump tweeted about its shuts shutdown stating "this is only about the dems not letting donald trump and republicans have a win." >> the president had nancy and chuck in the oval office and he negotiated against himself, and now he's in a corner. >> reporter: both sides are digging in on the seventh day of this impasse, neither showing a willingness to budge in a dispute whether to set aside $5 billion for a border wall. >> the one thing we should all want to do, no matter our political philosophy may be is to keep the lights on. >> reporter: the nation's homeland security secretary travels today to the border, after the death of a second migrant child this month. 8-year-old philippe gomez died en route to a hospital after being taken into immigration custody. president trump just tweeted again sig saying if there is no border wall, there will be a closure of the southern border,

in its entirety. it is now a certainty the shutdown will go through the weekend. as for the federal workers who are missing their paychecks, the uncertainty will go through the weekend as well. live in washington, i'm scott mcfarland. marcus, back to you. >> a lot of people following this one, and we will be following the closure as long as it lasts, and right now, it's 6:04. manhunt for the suspect police say killed one of their own continues in the central valley, the tight knit town of newman continues mourning the loss of one of its 12 police officers who died in the line of duty. 33-year-old ronil singh was shot and killed wednesday morning during a traffic stop. he's a native of fiji and came to the united states to become a police officer. singh leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old baby. these are pictures singh's uncle posted on facebook. he calls his nephew "a very adventurous and beautiful soul." meantime flowers line the entrance of the newman police department, as the flag flies at

half staff. street lights wrapped in blue ribbons lum nating the small town. the tributes to officer singh extend far beyond the department. >> it's like a family. it's not like they're just cops. they're so considerate and loving. it's a family. >> now let's show you a photo of that suspect. take a good look at him here. this is who law enforcement across california and likely other states are searching for right now. newman's police chief says he won't identify the suspect in the surveillance pictures because he wants to make sure it is the right man. the chief also says that the suspect is not in the country legally. live report on the search coming up in 30 minutes. we have new surveillance video out this morning, and police say it shows a man who had just escaped san quentin state prison carjacking a woman in san rafael.

we brought you live breaking coverage yesterday on "today in the bay." this video was taken around 9:30 p.m. wednesday night at the home depot in san rafael. in it, you can see a man crossing the parking lot, and then carjacking a silver suv. right now, a manhunt is under way for 21-year-old shalom mendoza. take a good look at him. he was convicted of carjacking and a police chase that was televised in los angeles. he's the first person to escape from san quentin in nearly 20 years. prison officials say he was on a job assignment outside the prison walls wednesday night when he escaped. people who live nearby are concerned an inmate escaped. >> i do see people coming out here to clean the garbage cans and stuff and they're under guard, you know, and the guards seem like they have everything under control so i just never really think about it, but yeah, that does concern me. >> police are looking for a silver toyota rav 4. mendoza was last seen in a white t-shirt and tan shorts.

and has that recognizable dirty money tattoo over his right eyebrow. if you see him, call 911. in santa clara county, a sheriff's deputy is in a lot of trouble. investigators say lieutenant mandy hen henderson, who you see right here, faked an injury and received paid administrative leave, but she was caught doing "strenuous workouts" at a gym in las vegas. she was arrested for fraud. now to a wild traffic stop in contra costa county. concord police say a san jose man stole this infiniti suv. officers tracked down the stolen car near jcpenney, but the suspect rammed the car into a police vehicle there, side-swiped two other cars and got onto 680, crashed into two more vehicles and took off on foot but he was later arrested. take a picture and report it, that's all the san jose fire department wants you to do this new year's eve, part of their online program to catch fireworks violators.

firefighters say neighbors can easily take pictures or videos of illegal fireworks and report it online. chp crews across the state also will be out this new year's eve catching drunk drivers. they want you to get a ride from someone sober, call a cab, or get a ride share. one option, you can take a ride from aaa, if you drink too much this new year's eve. the company says the driver can take you home. the first ten miles are free and people can call for the service at 1-800-aaa-help. rv parkinger us will drive yet another sf mta meeting. today officials will consider banning overnight parking on napoleon street, a short street near cesar chavez and highway 101. there are concerns rvs and buses are parking there long-term. this is an ongoing problem in many bay area cities including mountain view and berkeley. east palo alto is testing out the pilot program allowing rvs

on a government-owned piece of land. there is another tree fight sprouting up in san francisco. "the examiner" reports 1,700 people signed a petition to stop the removal of 19 ficus trees around the main library at civic center. they say removing the trees would create health problems and lead to "local climate change." the city says the trees have grown too big and pose a danger. there is a hearing on the tree fight late in january. good news for workers in the bay area and possible bad news for small businesses. minimum wages are rising this year. starting next week, mountain view is increasing wages to $15.65, that's 65 cents more an hour. san jose, palo alto, cupertino, los altos, santa clara and milpitas are climbing to $15 an hour, this comes as a blow to some local businesses. the portuguese bakery in santa clara says it's going to close because it can't afford to stay open.

now to a rescue to save a pug and a parrot. according to "the mercury news" the two were trapped in a house fire in san leandro wednesday. alameda county firefighters say a burning candle sparked the fire and the owners weren't home. in the end, they got the flames out and the pets out. >> always great to hear some great news. starting out your friday morning at 6:10, here is a live look at 580 in dublin. no fog this morning. yesterday it was covered with fog, and now visibility is clear, and part of that reason why it's clear is because the winds have been kicking up, and that kind of scours out any chances of seeing any fog, and so right now, our winds still coming in at about 15 to 20 miles per hour, so as you get ready to head out, going to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station, it will be 46 degrees starting out this morning, upper 50s by early afternoon, another nice day ahead. vianey has been tracking the roads, only a few minor issues so far. >> just a couple.

fate of sears could be determined today. the chairman of the iconic retailer, eddie lampert, has until 4:00 p.m. eastern time to submit a proposal of more than $4 billion to buy the company through a hedge fund in an effort to keep stores open. advisers for sears would have until next thursday to decide whether that offer is a qualified bid. if it's not or no offer is made, the retailer could start liquidating its assets which would let creditors get back some of their financial losses. sears, which also owns kmart, filed for bankruptcy in october. it has 500 stores and 68,000 workers. social media news, instagram rolled out a new feature yesterday but people weren't happy about it. the app, owned by facebook, very briefly switched to a horizontal feed, meaning you swipe left and right instead of the traditional up and down. instagram previously tested the change in october in the explore section of the app. it says the feature wasn't meant to be rolled out to everybody. facebook explaining a bug, which has since been fixed. those are your cnbc business headlines.

our weather very seasonable and we won't have the gusty winds we had yesterday, so all of our highs anywhere from the upper 50s to the low 60s and we're keeping that sunshine for today. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in about six minutes. vianey has a look at the morning drive. >> your morning drive is going to be a good one, considering we don't have any big delays, no big slow spots. in kt fact, aside from the 680, haven't seen anything major, which is always fantastic, down through the south bay. what you are going to get is the typical morning buildup as we inch closer to the 7:00 a.m. hour. folks especially headed to work around that time are aware of that. golden gate bridge this is what it looks like. it has a beautiful view. we have plenty of cars out on the roads and richmond issing l looking like this. even though it's friday morning, we're seeing more cars than we were yesterday. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. a developing story this morning, police across california are still looking for a gunman that killed one of their own.

they hope today is the day he is hunted down and captured. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in stanislas county where the manhunt and the search for clues isn't stopping. do you have new information this morning, bob? >> reporter: kira and marcus, we heard from the newman city police chief yesterday, and he tells us the man who shot and killed corporal ron singh is a coward and he's asking for your help to try to find this person, and bring him to justice. i want to you look at your tv screen, the stanislas county sheriffs department confirmed these are those are the suspect but not confirmed his name. yesterday, law enforcement thought they might have found him. deputies and officers cordoned off a farmhouse in a small community of el nito, south of merced. they issued a search warrant but unfortunately there was no luck in finding the suspect. this is the marquee in the downtown theater here in newman,

with a message honoring the fallen officer. many people in newman, it's a small town, knew corporal singh. they remember him being friendly as an officer. corporal singh pulled the suspect over early wednesday morning as part of a dui investigation. he radioed a description of the vehicle and few minutes radioed back "shots fired." >> it was a gunfight. corporal singh absolutely tried to defend himself and stop this credible threat. >> please, help us find this man and bring him to justice. i hope he's watching today and he does the right thing and turns himself in. >> this suspect is in our country illegally. he doesn't belong here. he's a criminal. >> reporter: after that information came out, president donald trump tweeted about the search for singh's killer and

immigration status of the suspect writing in part "time to get tough on border security. build the wall." this is some video from last night. this is an officer from the alameda city police department, made the 90-minute trip out here to deliver flowers outside the newman city police department, where a lot of people have been leaving flowers, stuffed animals, candles, balloons, that sort of thing in honor of corporal ron singh. tonight the city will come together at 6:00 for a vigil at the town square a couple blocks from here to remember corporal ron singh. reporting live in newman, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so many people touched by that story. bob, thank you so much. 6:34 right now. we are learning this morning the 8-year-old guatemalan boy who died in u.s. immigration custody, he had the flu, that's what new mexico authorities are saying the autopsy showed. he died on christmas eve. he was coughing, vomiting and had a fever. the news of his death reached

his home in guatemala, some 2,000 miles away. we spoke with his mother. >> she says the family was desperate to escape poverty in guatemala when philippe and his father started their trek to america. >> now the mother says that the family was hoping for a better life for philippe. he is the second migrant child to die in u.s. custody. a 7-year-old girl died earlier this month. both deaths are under investigation and as we reported earlier, homeland security homeland secretary kirsten nielsen will visit the u.s./mexico border today. the mother of a woman shot to death by san jose police officers is speaking out, at a candlelight vigil for 24-year-old jennifer vasquez. she was allegedly driving a stolen car when she was shot and killed by police early christmas. the officers thought she was a suspect in a shooting. vasquez's friends believe the shooting could have been

avoided. >> they could have pepper sprayed her, they could have tasered her or shot out the tires. they could have brought the k9 unit out. >> had the deceased not been driving a stolen vehicle, had not led police on a dangerous high-speed chase, crashed the vehicle and did not attempt to get away, at all costs, ramming officers and endangering their lives, that this shooting and this tragedy would not have occurred on christmas morning. >> i am announcing an investigation at a federal level. >> that is police chief eddie garcia. he is defending his officers' actions. vasquez's family wants to meet with a district attorney. new video showing a water rescue in the north bay after a boat capsized. if you look behind that tree you can see a man being pulled out of the lake by a suspect.

firefighters say the man wasn't hurt. he just got stuck. someone might start the new year a millionaire. the mega millions jackpot happens in about 16 hours. the jackpot is up $348 million there, and people across the country are buying tickets. 2018 has really been a lucky year for those winners there. there was a $1.5 billion mega millions winner in october, which the winner hasn't come forward. the drawing tonight is at 8:00. >> vianey, are you that winner? >> no, i'm not. i haven't bought one, but you don't have any accidents to report so you might be able to stop and buy one without worry to hit a crash or hit any traffic at all, because we've had a very clear morning out on the roads. so let's get right to your drive times, that way you have an idea what to expect. southbound 68058 to vargas road 12 minutes. here is a look at how your bridges are doing, westbound 80 to the bay bridge nine minutes.

in oakland typically this is bumper to bumper, not so much right now. >> looks good traffic and weather. kari hall is here with the weekend weather for the last weekend of the year. >> yes, so a lot of parties going on, people headed in town, out of town, and we are going to keep it cool across the bay area, with some possibly freezing temperatures tomorrow morning. we'll see highs reaching up to about 54 to 55 degrees, and a lot of sunshine. we'll get some more sun on sunday, and no major changes in our temperatures for the coastal areas, up to about 55 degrees and 56 degrees for the bay and inland valleys. and half moon bay we're up to about 58 degrees throughout the weekend, with mostly sunny skies, a nice weekend to head to the beach and soak up some sun. if you're going to the sierra, you want to see some snow, it is going to be cold today. we've had lows dipping down into the teens. today the high only reaches 28 degrees there, but at least it will be milder for the rest of the weekend, with some low to mid-40s. russian river valley will be great all weekend long, looking

right now at 6:42, it is a clear start, also cool temperatures. here is a look at highway 101 in palo alto. we'll start with upper 40s today and going to have another day with some seasonable highs reaching into the mid to upper 50s with sunshine. it won't be as windy today. we'll talk about what to expect going into the weekend coming up in less than five minutes. as we inch closer to sunrise, we have this beautiful shot of the bay bridge. we are seeing a smooth commute on all the bridges but there is a high wind advisory. i'm tracking a traffic collision just reported by chp along northbound 101 in the south bay. i'll have details on that coming up. >> thank you, vianey. a popular los angeles news anchor is found dead. now an investigation is under way. this is chris burrous was found unconscious in a motel room yesterday afternoon in the l.a. area. take a look at the scene. glendale police say they were called there by a man in the

hotel room, burrous was passed out and not breathing. firefighters rushed to the scene, administered cpr and hurried to the hospital. he died later there. he was 43 years old. here is what investigators are saying this morning. >> we're waiting for a toxicology report to come back from the coroner's office. until we get that, we won't be able to tell what the cause of death was. it is currently being investigated as a possible overdose. >> this is a facebook video burrous took on christmas day. he was a producer for nbc bay area back in 1996. most recently, he worked at ktla for nearly eight years. along with several other stations across california. he is survived by his wife and 9-year-old daughter. the man who arson teams say started this fire in southern california is going to trial. a judge just made that ruling. forrest clark is facing arson charges for the holy fire which destroyed a dozen homes in

orange and riverside counties back in august. clark pleaded not guilty. investigators say clark was feuding with a neighbor and set fire to his cabin, which got out of control. a new study conducted by state lawmakers puts a damper on the hopes of creating a state-backed bank for the marijuana industry. those in favor of the bank believe it will bring more transparency. >> but the report indicates that it could be too costly for the state. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from hayward. pete, break all of this down for us. >> reporter: good morning to you, guys. banks are hesitant to work with those in the recreational marijuana industry, since it's still illegal on the federal level, so it could be a problem for dispensaries like the one we're standing in front of here in hayward, but this idea of a state-backed bank for the industry may not be the best idea either, according to the study we're looking at. the study was done by the california treasurer's office and says the state bank could take the

industry out of the shadows, put it in more of a regulated economy. the study points out the industry could generate anywhere from $1 billion to $3 billion annually in state revenues but they could cost up to $35 million in startup costs, about $1 billion in capital and a potential loss for the state in money for 12 years. this comes back to federal laws, so if there's changes in favor of legalization, the state banks essentially wouldn't be able to compete with regular banks but if the laws become more aggressive, the state banks will close as well but deposits could be confiscated. the city recommends creation of an agency to encourage banks to work with the marijuana industry. still, this is clearly an uphill battle for the industry. live in hayward, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> it will be interesting to see what happens. thanks, pete. now to parents who will soon have a new vaccine to protect their young kids. the fda approved vacellus for 6

weeks old to 4ers yoo, it protects them against whooping cough, polio and tetanus. the vaccine is administered to kids through three injections, but it won't be available to patients until the year 2020. soon, you could know the exact price of your next hospital visit before you're admitted. new federal law will go into effect next week requiring hospitals to publish online the prices of all medical services they provide and they'll be updated every year. the changes also apply to rehab and psychiatric facilities. listen to this story. a woman is watching her kids open presents on christmas morning, when suddenly pain shoots through her body. >> she knew something was wrong, so her family carried her to the car, then this happened. tiffany sanders' water broke. luckily her 11-year-old daughter was right by her side. she held her mom's hand there and even caught the baby as it came out.

was over the past 24 hours. the winds were howling at mt. st. helena, where we had a wind gust of 63 miles per hour in mt. diab diablo, up to 53 miles per hour in the hills east of fremont, 39 and at the surface level, chrissy field the winds at 30 miles per hour in san jose, 28. we still have some breezes especially coming through the delta fairfield with wind speeds at 22, but we're starting to see winds calming down and our temperatures are dropping as well. so in the north bay, ukiah, it is 30 degrees, but compare that to the 51 we had in san francisco, and the 47 we have in livermore. so as you're getting dressed this morning, it is a day to wear something nice and warm. it's a hat and coat kind of day, and then as we go through the rest of the forecast, more chilly mornings and nice mild afternoons, very seasonable weather with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. still nice and quiet. no storms brewing in the

pacific. we'll continue on with dry weather over the next seven days. leading into the start of 2019, it's going to be cool during those early hours. our inland valleys will drop back into the 30s, but recover nicely with highs in the upper 50s, from now through next thursday. heading over to vianey, you've been tracking the roads. any issues out there? >> my maps aren't looking as lovely as they were 30 minutes ago. we have some accidents that popped up in the south bay. i want to get to two that are causing delays in through the livermore area. we have not one but two. again, our speed sensors showing the first crash westbound 84 involving three vehicles. they are working to clear that out to the right-hand shoulder but you could see the speed sensors are showing some delays. chp reporting that they're already working on getting that cleared out, but just up ahead, this is on the opposite side, eastbound 84 and this is near the 680 interchange, already seeing some delays through that area. westbound 580 from grant line

and killed in the line of duty on wednesday morning during a traffic stop. he's a native of fiji and came to the united states to become a police officer. singh leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old baby. these are tick tours singh's uncle posted on facebook. he calls his nephew a "very adventurous and beautiful soul." flowers line the newman plrmt as the flag flies at half staff. street lights wrapped in blue ribbons illuminate the small town. the tributes extend far beyond the department. >> it's like a family. it's not like they're just cops. they're so considerate and loving. it's a family. >> now let's show you a photo of that suspect. take a good look at him here. this is who law enforcement across california and likely other states are searching for right now. newman's police chief says he won't identify the suspect in the surveillance pictures because he wants to make sure it is the right man. the chief also says that the

suspect in this photo is in the county and country illegally. in the north bay, there are new clues in the search of a missing inmate from san quentin state prison. we brought you live breaking cover nlg aof the search yesterday morning on "today in the bay." surveillance video shows a man who had just escaped san quentin carjacking a woman in san rafael. the video was taken around 9:00 wednesday night at the home depot in san rafael. you can see he crossed the parking lot and carjacked that silver suv. right now, a manhunt is still under way for him. he's 21-year-old shalom mendoza. he was convicted of carjacking and a police chase that was televised in l.a., that's why he was in san quentin. mendoza is the first person to escape from that prison in nearly 20 years. officials say he was on a job assignment outside the prison walls wednesday night when he escaped. people who live next to san quentin are concerned the inmate was able to escape.
