"early today" starts right now. >> good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> so great being with you on this friday. i'm frances rivera. the shutdown showdown enters week two. today president trump will meet with top congressional leaders at the white house as they try to hammer out a deal to reopen the government. but as of now, neither side is budging and with democrats retaking control of the house, there is no telling how long the partial shutdown could last. nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest from d.c. reopen the government last hat . >> reporter: it went nowhere because republicans on the other side are calling it a political stunt. they won't even consider it, even though they interestingly passed something on a temporary basis last fall. but now they say without any money for the wall, the president won't sign it. so they will not consider it. so, everyone heads back to the white house today to try to negotiate a way out of this shutdown, but the question this

morning, where does that negotiation begin? because the new house speaker, nancy pelosi, says president trump will get not one dime for this wall. >> is there any situation which you would accept even a dollar of wall funding for this president in order to reopen the government? >> a dollar? [ laughter ] a dollar? $1, yeah, $1. >> how high will you go -- >> you said a dollar. that's not your question. you said a dollar. i'll answer your question. the fact is a wall is an immorality. it's not who we are as a nation. >> reporter: so, again, it's not clear where the negotiation begins with both sides here digging in. now, those bills that you mentioned, frances, that passed here last night by the new democratically controlled house, the plan was to reopen eight do with the wallhutdown right . and that 9th one, homeland

security, which is where the wall funding would come from, to give them 30 days to try to work something out, but the white house says they don't want to kick this can down the road any more. it's now or never, with 800,000 federal workers' paychex in the balance waiting to figure out what's going to happen as we enter day or week three of the shutdown. frances? >> all right, tracie potts for us. tracie, thank you. >> more ratifications of the shutdown showdown are being felt across the country. during this budget standoff, lawmakers failed to reauthorize the violence against women act. adds the shutdown drags on, nonprofits that serve women impacted by violence could see their funding dry up. this stalemate is also holding up breweries in the u.s.. the alcohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau says, due to the lapse in funding, they will not be reviewing applications for labels and licenses for new beers, wines, or spirits until the shutdown is over. this means beer lovers may have
