the bay area. we'll first talk about the wind which has been pretty gusty around san jose. gusts up to 30 at times. 51 degrees and the golden gate bridge is a wet start to the weekend. 52 degrees. winds at 16 miles per hour and wind is a big part of the story. wind advisory until about 4:00. wind speeds starting to pick up. we could see gusts of 45 miles per hour. we might see wind speeds close to 60 above 1,000 feet. north bay seeing motoroderate r at times. scanning the skies to the south, not a lot yet in san jose. most of the rain is hung up on the west side of the santa cruz mountains. here's the next batch of heavier showers which will come on through. a very active pattern today which includes the gusty winds

but here's the unique part of the storm. the center is actually to the west of us. it's not west of seattle or portland. if that cold air -- with that cold air in place, things become more unstable h. we do have the risk of thunderstorms today with some small hail. the one-two punch of the storm, gusty wind, rain at times. strong gusts through midday and the focus shifts to thunderstorms as we head into the afternoon and coming up around this time tomorrow, second storm on the way. in 15 minutes, we'll have a closer look at how much rain we're expecting and how long the winds will be lasting for your weekend plans. >> thanks, rob. our team coverage continues with "today in the bay" live in stran, how's it going out there, roz? >> a little bit rainy, a little bit cold and a little bit windy. what a way to welcome in the first weekend of the new year. the rain started here about half an hour or so ago and then it got a little bit colder and the wind picked up. it is a miserable morning here

for folks who are out. we're near the ferry building and there are people out. there are some of them are out because they're jogging. others are out because they have to go to work. we talked to one woman who works at the farmers market. she was on her way to set up for that and she dressed for the weather because she realized she knew the forecast and realized this was going to be a miserable day. here's what she had to say. >> it slows down the market but then we have a lot of restaurants, so -- >> reporter: what do you have on? >> all rain gear because when the wind starts, we're under a tent so it just like blows on us. >> reporter: it is going to be worse for her because they're under those tents and the wind will blow into them, the rain will blow into them but she's adjusted to the weather so she can put all of it. the rain is coming down sort of a mist and showers and now it is coming back down a little

breaking news and bring you any updates as they come in throughout this newscast. we turn to developing news in the east bay, a triple homicide near the west oakland bart station. three men are dead after the shooting near center and 10th streets. all three victims were found inside a car around 9:00 last night. there was a heavy police presence into the area well into the night about three hours long. no word on any arrests. investigators tell us they believe it was gang related. this is the first triple homicide in oakland in more than two years. a call for justice in the east bay. family and friends gathered to bring augustine's case back in the lime lite. he was shot and killed by police. gonzalez's family says their son was experiencing a mental health crisis and at no point, they say, did officers try to place him in a psychiatric hold. >> we want to try to put the

pressure on the city of hayward p.d. and on getting answers on what happened that night. >> it was later determined to be a small razor blade. an internal and independent investigation is under way. there has been an arrest in the case of a jogger who says she was attacked by a woman on a popular east bay trail. investigators say the 19-year-old bit the jogger after the jogger pepper sprayed her dog because the jogger thought the dog was going to attack her. this happened thursday morning near oakland city stables on golden rod trail near skyline boulevard. a 14-year-old boy who was dragged through the streets of oakland under a car remains in critical condition. witnesses captured video of the crime which is disturbing to watch. this is right after it happened. you can see the driver and a passenger just drove away

leaving the boy in the street. the boy was hit while riding his bike and dragged four blocks. the family says he broke both of his legs and 19 of his ribs. his road rash is so bad he's being treated as a burn victim. the family isn't ready to talk but has set up a gofundme account to help with medical costs. shifting z-beerz now, california gets its new governor on monday. he'll be sworn in on the steps of the capitol weather permitting. we've also learned he'll be moving from his home in kent field to the governor's mansion in sacramento bringing his wife, four kids, two dogs and a bunny. >> it shows that he's invested in, you know, being around in this area and i work down the street so its awesome just to be able to see that and maybe have some interaction, say hi and that kind of stuff. >> yesterday governor jerry

brown spent the day moving out. governor newsom's inauguration ceremony takes place monday morning at 11:00 a.m. there has been more reaction to the foul language used by a brand-new member of congress. she used an expletive when she talked about impeaching president trump and now the president is weighing in and so too is the brand-new speaker of the house. >> i thought that was a great dishonor to her and to her family. i thought it was highly disrespectful to the united states of america. >> i don't like that language. i wouldn't use that language. i don't -- again, establish any language standard for my colleagues, but i don't think it's anything worse than the president -- what the president has said. >> she also said she doesn't think the house should move to impeach the president until there are more facts. it is 7:07 on your first saturday of 2019. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, celebrating ten years

it down for you in just a minute. today marks two weeks since the government shutdown. here's a live look for you across the country in washington, d.c. where the budget impasse continues. president trump wants his border wall and if he doesn't get some sort of compromise from the democrats, he says he'll get the wall without them. nbc hallie jackson has the latest. >> reporter: two weeks into the shutdown a two hour talk and two versions of how it went. >> he said he'd keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years. >> we just completed a lengthy and sometimes contentious conversation with the president. >> i thought it was really a very, very good meeting. >> reporter: the president in a surprise appearance in the rose garden revealing he's considering going around congress all together by invoking emergency national security powers to get the wall he wants. >> we could call a national emergency and build it very

quickly and it's another way of doing it. if we can do it through a negotiated process, we're giving that a shot. >> reporter: the president may be shifting that stance, what that wall looks like? >> you have a concrete wall. that's what i do best. >> reporter: sounds different than it once did. >> i think we'll have to build a steel wall as opposed to a concrete wall. you can call it a steel fence. >> reporter: he says negotiations will continue this weekend with the partial shutdown all but guaranteed to drag into next week. >> i am proud to shut down the government for border security, chuck. >> reporter: now, are you still proud to own this shutdown? >> i appreciate the way you say that, but once -- i'm very proud of doing what i'm doing. i don't call it a shutdown. i call it doing what you have to do for the benefit and for the safety of our country. you can call it the schumer or the pelosi or the trump shutdown. it doesn't make any difference to me. just words. >> reporter: it's not words but dollars to the federal employees forced to stay home still on the hook for mortgages or rent.

bay area and some spots could be seeing downpours. meteorologist rob mayeda will break down the forecast for you including blustery winds for this saturday, first saturday of 2019. last night it was the hottest ticket in town. steph curry's v.i.p. party in oakland and the v.i.p. were the fans who got free tickets. the musical headliners were local entertainers. "today in the bay" cheryl hurd was at the fox theater for this very special event. >> i need all metal out of your pockets. >> reporter: it was safety first for those who stood in line outside the fox theater for hours. >> i'm ready. let's go, baby. let's go! >> we're exciting, yes! concert. the question is, will they all brave the rain this weekend? not everyone plans to. >> if it's raining, i can't come out. can't mess with the hair. >> we'll be out. weather doesn't bother us. we'll be good. >> rain jackets, rain pants, best to be over prepared so you can enjoy all the outdoor concerts and all the free festivities. let's check in with rob mayeda with a look at our weekend forecast. i don't want to ruin anything you're going to say but it sounds like all the storms we're seeing might clear out in time. >> there's some good news for monday. we might see a bit of a break between storms just in time for the championship game. for folks that are still trying to get to town to catch the big game coming up on monday, the national championship game, look at the flight delay situation into sfo this morning. more than two hours now for some flights due to the low cloud cover, the rain and wind. not a good travel day out at the airport. if you're expecting family and friends call ahead.

those delays will likely be an all-day event and we'll see more tomorrow as the second storm comes on in. 49 degrees. winds 16 out at sfo. we've had frosty starts to the morning in the tri-valley. not the case with the cloud cover. 42 this morning. it has been a blustery morning. 17-miles-per-hour winds. wind speeds right now strongest out near the coast. we will see these wind speeds accelerate as we head through midday peeking through 11:00 and 2:00 as we head into the afternoon. highs today will be in the mid-to-upper 50s. rain at times. widespread rain for the morning and then we'll transition to scattered showers and a chance of thunder showers into the afternoon. we pick umthese bands of rain around richmond. you're seeing it in oakland and now leaving san francisco, another band coming in from the west. parts of fremont and palo alto beginning to see the rain cross

over from the coastal hills approaching san jose through the santa cruz mountains and into morganhill. you can see the counterclockwise rotation offshore. that's the area of low-pressure essentially just off to the west of us. it's helping to crank up the winds this morning and this cooler air as it comes on in will give us a chance of snow levels, maybe down to about 4,000 feet and stronger thunderstorms this afternoon which may involve some hail which we'll be watching very closely. through mid-morning, bands of showers passing on through. from 1:30 to 3:30, look at these isolated stronger cells which will be passing through the bay area. that's the time frame to watch for a thunderstorm potential this afternoon. some of that could be locally strong out near the coast. so stay tuned and keep a close eye on your radar and the weather app for the radar information for your area. by 7:00 and 11:00, you begin to see how things quiet down.

that's the break between the two storms and as we get into sunday, there you go. 11:00 and more so for your sunday plans, that could be a washout. it looks like we'll see a lot more rain with that sunday storm as opposed to what we're seeing with this current storm. rain totals today don't look all that impressive but when you add the two storms together, now you see by sunday night how a lot of the bay area hill tops could be looking at two to three inches of rain. wind speeds will peak right around midday and around 3:00 we begin to see those wind speeds come down and speaking of coming down, look at all that snow in the sierra. we could be looking at two to three feet of snow in the sierra. monday, things do trend a little bit dryer. we'll still have to leave in some showers for monday and the big championship game then get ready for another strong storm. this is going to be the third in the series coming into tuesday and wednesday and you can see that playing out now in your seven-day forecast. today, wind and rain at times.

outsi good saturday morning to you. our top story, a microclimate weather alert for this first weekend of 2019. outside the rain is coming down in parts of the bay area and everyone will be getting wet. you can see our doppler radar we are tracking it with our nbc bay area stormranger and stran having a little trouble with our camera there popping in and out of your screen. good morning. it is 7:30. i'm kira klapper. we have live team coverage and meteorologist rob mayeda starts us off. rob, you are busy already this morning. >> the one-two punch of the storm. first it was the wind now we're seeing the rain across the bay area. not too much rain in san jose. it has been a gusty start. winds at 17 miles per hour. the cloud cover and the onshore breezes that brought our temperatures up. 49 degrees at sfo. more than two hour delays for some inbound flights. we're looking at wind, low cloud

cover there. that's an ongoing issue for travel today out at our local airports. winds are picking up this morning. the other thing picking up is the rain here. you can see there towards the east bay hills down the coast and peninsula towards the santa cruz mountains and not a lot of rain in san jose just yet. this is the first of two weekend storms. this particular storm probably not packing as much rain compared to what we'll see tomorrow with the second storm but it does have an area of low-pressure curling just off to the west of us. cool air loft increasingly unstable environment as we head through the afternoon so that could set the stage for some isolated stronger thunderstorms especially out near the coast. we have a wind advisory up through the bay area through 4:00 today. winds 20 to 30 which i think will be increasing around lunchtime. gusts up to 45 miles per hour and then past lunchtime early afternoon watching out for those isolated thunderstorms and, yes, a stronger storm due in tomorrow

that will pack quite a bit more rain. we have our storm projections coming up in 15 minutes. >> thanks. our team coverage continues with roz plater live in stran and roz, we saw you about 30 minutes ago and you described it as miserable. >> reporter: it is a little bit miserable add to we've had a little bit of break in the rain the past couple minutes ago. the wind has picked up and now it's getting light, it's gray outside. so that really is not a great combination for this first weekend of the new year. the storm and the rain started here about half an hour ago about 6:30. started about just mist and then showers and then it started picking up as to when it was coming down a lot more. chilly out here today as well as the wind gusting through really blustering. we're along here near the ferry

terminal and there are people out and about here i can tell you. there are folks jogging and people on their way to work at the farmers market and we found a couple here from turloch coming to visit to have a tourist day here in san francisco unaware of what the rain was and the weather was going to be like. >> we came unprepared, but unfortunately that happens here sometimes. you just have to go and buy a sweater out here. this isn't going to stop us. >> reporter: they're going to go look for some gear and they need -- she had a sweater on. he had a light jacket on. you'll definitely need a lot more than that to be out here along this -- in this weather today. again, rain coming down but a little break in it for us right now. it is, again, windy and cold, so if you're coming out, you might want to get your rain gear ready and get bundled up because it's cold as well. we're live in san francisco, i'm

roz plater, nbc bay area news. >> you are great for standing out there and those poor folks trying to be tourists on a day like this. thanks so much. we do have a free app for you for android and iphone users. we send out push notifications. all you need to know, maybe if those tourists have had they would have known what was coming. be sure to download it to get the latest on this microclimate weather alert. we have breaking news to report now the. an officer involved shooting in the south bay and we have moments ago confirmed the suspect is dead and was the only person shot. it happened around 6:00 this morning, just an hour and a half ago at the gas station on la fayette street. this is just a few miles from santa clara university. here is new video into our newsroom in just the last 30 minutes. you can see the windows of the gas station are shattered. police officers looking for evidence, combing the scene.

witnesses tell us they did see multiple shots fired but as we just confirmed, that shooting suspect was the only person who was shot. we're working to figure out what may have led to the shooting. we will continue to follow this breaking story and bring you updates as they come in. another good reason to download our app. hundreds of people paid their respect to the police officer shot and killed in the line of duty. an honor guard viewing was held for police corporal ronil singh. his k-9 partner was also there. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop just hours after christmas ended. he leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old baby. the suspect is now in custody. funeral services will be held in newman today. an investigation at yosemite after a man falls to his death. it actually happened back on christmas day. park rangers say the man was visiting the park when he slipped down silver apron, that's a large slope of granite

above nevada fall. the news is only being released now because the investigation took longer than usual because of the government shutdown. there may be a shake-up at pg & e. the utility announced it has launched a search for a new member to its border of director. they won't say if its planning to replace any current directors or just expand the existing board. this all, of course, comes as pg & e is potentially facing billions of dollars in liability for its power lines sparking wildfires in california. national public radio is reporting the utility may sell off its gas division to raise money to cover court judgements and settlements for the fires. reuters is reporting that pg & e may consider filing for bankruptcy. three and a half months later and the transbay transit center remains closed, but now a step toward getting it fixed.

the new san francisco transportation hub was closed september 25th right after workers found cracks in two steel beams. this was just days after its celebratory opening. yesterday a team of engineers signed off on a repair plan that involves bolting new steel plates to the top and bottom of the cracked beams. those cracks were caused when crews cut holes at the base of the beams. still no word on when that transit center will reopen. the day after tomorrow on monday, california gets its brand-new governor, gavin newsom will be sworn in on the steps of the capitol, weather permitting. he'll be the first governor since governor schwarzenegger 16 years ago to be sworn outside. we also heard he'll be moving from his home in kent field to the governor's mansion in sacramento bringing in tow his wife and four kids, two dogs and a bunny. >> it shows he's invested in being around this area and i

has returned to the bay area on your right. we could be seeing some downpours. meteorologist rob mayeda is up in a bit to break it down. fireworks lighting up the sky in san jose's discovery meadow last night after a free concert for the college football national championship. alabama and clemson will face off monday at levi stadium. this marks the third time in the last four years those two will meet in the title game. it's also a big weekend for the fans and the kids. there's a field inside the san jose convention center already seeing plenty of action and inspiration. 49ers mckinnon and bradley pinion spoke to a group of high school and collegiate student athletes. >> i was in that same spot. i feel like in some cases there are maybe some kids where it goes in and out but as long as one kid gets the message then i

sfo. the wind and rain at times, some arriving flights being delayed by more than two hours this morning, so call ahead. temperatures in the upper 40s right now at sfo. in dublin, not a lot of wind this morning but 42 degrees. in san jose, wind speeds at 17 miles per hour, currently 51 degrees and on the topic of the wind, this is going to be an all-day event with the wind advisory up through about 4:00. strongest winds coming in midday and temperatures in the afternoon should be in the mid-to-upper 50s. let's talk about the wind right now. strongest gusts around the coast. some gusts close to 30. notice the wind speeds over the next few hours peaking from 10:00 this morning to the early afternoon. you see the higher wind speeds indicated in the purposeling and red on the higher hill tops. could see gusts up to 45 miles per hour and in the evening wind speeds start to calm down but expect more wind as our second

storm arrives on sunday. the rain is wildly scattered. we're seeing these bands of rain coming on through. san francisco is about to see more rain in the next 20 minutes. a few light showers near oakland. not a lot around santa cruz mountains and eventually that will spill over into the santa claira valley. scattered showers and the chance of thunder showers for the afternoon. between the two storms we're seeing this weekend, this first storm in terms of rainfall doesn't look all that impressive. many areas may see less than a half inch to a third of an inch of rain. if you're near one of those isolated thunderstorms in afternoon, you'll see your rainfall totals spike compared to other parts of the bay area. right now as we're seeing on the radar view on stormranger. bands of showers passing through. the time to watch today in terms of thunderstorms is indicated in our futurecast models is right around lunchtime to 4:00.

they may include some small hail. slight chance of water spouts today. this is a chance of stronger thunderstorms during the afternoon. you'll catch a break from 11:00 tonight to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. watch how the rain is more of an all-day event during the day tomorrow. through 5:00, 7:00 we still got rain going. so the two storms, once you take today's totals, you add on sunday's, now you're starting to see these totals add up to two to three inches in most of the coastal mountains by the time you wrap up the weekend. if you're heading to the sierra, pack some patients. we could see two to three feet of snow and snowy conditions continuing over the next few days as the storm track stays pretty active. monday, scattered showers in the forecast and storm three rolls in tuesday night into wednesday. busy. seven-day forecast ahead and a stormy weekend with two storms today and tomorrow, monday's a bit of a break. good news we think for the
