the heart of the rio grande valley. this is the busiest stretch in recent years for illegal crossings. his visit comes amid the shutdown breakdown. the blowup inside the white house situation room yesterday. it comes as tomorrow the u.s. is set to tie the record for the longest shutdown in history. president trump bound for the border, leaving the nation's capital in turmoil after talks to end the shutdown, now in its 20th day, collapsed? >> our meeting didn't last long. >> the president walking out of a contentious 20-minute closed door meeting with democrats in the white house situation room. democrats say the meeting fell apart when president trump asked house speaker nancy pelosi whether she would agree to fund a border wall in exchange for reopening the government. >> he said if i open up the government, you won't do what i want. a few minutes later he sort of slammed the table and when leader pelosi said she didn't

agree with the wall he walked out and said we have nothing to discu discuss. >> reporter: the president calling the meeting a total waste of time adding when pelosi rejected his waste of a wall, he said bye-bye, nothing else works. >> the president made his position clear that there will be no deal without a wall. there will be no deal without the priorities the president has put on the table. >> reporter: the breakdown sparking new concerns among moderate republicans who want the government to reopen. susan collins with lester holt. >> i'm worried about what the end game is. this cannot be allowed to go on forever. >> reporter: still, the president insists his party is behind him. >> we have tremendous republican suppo support. >> reporter: president trump's southern border visit is designed to highlight what the white house has claimed is a national security crisis. >> a humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border. >> reporter: in fact, government

figures show border apprehensions are down from their peak in the early 2000s. the white house also under fire for citing a humanitarian crisis as part of its argument for the wall. and while the number of crossings by families with children and unaccompanied children has gone up between october 2017 and november 2018, critics blame the president's own policies for that increase, particularly the administration's move to forcibly separate migrant families at the border, a policy the white house has abandoned. president trump scheduled to get a briefing about boarder security. it's also a region where 25 miles of new wall has already been funded by the federal government, set for construction to begin, he will be visiting the city of mcallen which is one of america's safest cities, the heart of a fierce debate over whether there is a border crisis home. da and savannah, back to you. >> peter, thank you. >> now to capitol hill where it's two words, kasie hunt. now what?

you have both sides dug in, nobody wants to budge. how does this end? >> it's completely unclear at this point, savannah, the incentives for both sides are simply to dig in. the democrats have no incentive to say okay mr. president, we'll give you what you want. our polling shows the american people are with them. they don't think the government should be shut down for this border wall. there are some behind-the-scenes negotiations between jared kushner, the president's son-in-law, lindsey graham and a small group of senators to expand these negotiations to perhaps include some things that democrats want like protections for dreamers, kids brought here through no fault of their own and who have troubled legal status but at this point it isn't clear democrats want to play ball on that and this is still in the president's court at the end of the day. he has really backed himself into a corner here. >> there is pleasure on both

sides come tomorrow when it's the first day people aren't getting their paychecks. it's also the longest stretch we've had one of these shutdowns, right, kasie? >> that's right, the pain that americans will be feeling is something that hasn't necessarily found its way here to capitol hill yet although it's starting to. we heard from government workers who came up with democrats. they were asked for a show of hands who among them supported this wall in exchange for this shutdown. not a single hand went up. we know president trump has said he thinks federal workers are on his side. a different story in washington it seems, hoda. >> and we learned 80% of federal workers are outside washington so we'll see how this develops. casey, thank you. moving on to the powerful winter storm set to sweep across the country. it will bring snow and ice and bitter cold to millions of people. al roker has been tracking this.

mr. roker, what's up? >> another system, first we have some lake-effect snow making its way down into the northeast and parts of new york. snowfall amounts fairly light. near from two to six inches of snow in northern new england. here's the next big system coming out of texas. rain in the southern plains but late-day snow developing into missouri, indiana, ohio and the mid-atlantic. into saturday the rain stays down to the south through southeast. secondary low develops but we think because of this high pressure that will depress the snow line down into new jersey, washington, and the mid-atlantic but if that high breaks down, we could be looking at more significant snow. here is what we look for impact wise through sunday night. anywhere from six to nine inches of snow central missouri into indiana. we have a lesser amount, about two to four inches as we make our way to the east and then we get into the appalachians.

we're talking about heavy bands of snow for the west virginia mountains, anywhere from six to nine inches and we could see winter weather advisories for washington depending on the track of the storm. we'll continue to track it for you as well. guys? new jersey leader kim jong-un says he is committed to a second summit with president trump. kim told chinese president ching he wants to, quote, achieve results that will be welcomed bety international community. kim renewed his commitment to denuclearization. in the meantime, the president said negotiations were already under way for a location for their next summit and that the announcement would be made in the future. >> craig joins the table, another story getting attention. police in arizona are investigating a disturbing case. a woman in a coma for more than a decade gave birth at a nursing facility. morgan chesky is in phoenix with more. good morning. >> craig, good morning.

this horrific case focusing on the employees at hacienda. every male employee is now a potential suspect and police have obtained the search warrants to test their dna. hacienda health care shaken by a crime that took nine months to discover. a 29-year-old woman in a vegetative state for years giving birth date last month to a baby boy. >> she was not in a position to give content to any of this so if anyone can understand that this was a helpless victim. >> reporter: now an intense search under way for the father. police have started taking dna samples from each man who works behind these walls. within hours of the birth, a sex crimes unit took over the case. police learning the woman's last physical exam was back in april. no one on staff reporting a pregnancy until she went into labor. >> it would be very, very tough to believe that medical personnel were seeing her, treating her and couldn't realize that she was eight or nine months pregnant. >> reporter: the company's ceo

bill timmons resigned on monday, its board calling the situation horrifying adding they're cooperating fully are police. hacienda's most recent state inspection ending in six citations. >> this is so unnerving and baffling that it's kind of so lax. >> reporter: carina's daughter jasmine is also a patient at the facility. a brain injury left the 22-year-old in need of full time care. now she says she won't leave her side until this case is closed. >> i worry about all the patients in every facility. this is the reason why something that needs to happen has to happen now. >> reporter: an attorney for the family of the woman sexually assaulted telling nbc news they are outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at hacienda health care. the police turning to the public for help to track down a suspect. >> if anything has anything, if they have information for us that they think might help us in this investigation, we would

like them to come forward, to contact us. >> we're learning when the boy was born he wasn't able to breathe and was in distress but the family's attorney telling us he is in the care of an extended family who loves him. back to you guys. >> truly disturbing story. thank you so much. >> the search is on for an armored truck driver who mysteriously disappeared with $850,000 in cash. a federal arrest warrant has been issued for 29-year-old mark espinoza. he hasn't been seen since december 5. police say espinoza was waiting in the truck while a co-worker made a money drop at a louisville, kentucky mall. when his colleague returned, suppo espinoza and the truck were gone. other news now, major changes expected at the oscars in the wake of the kevin hart controversy. the show now reportedly will be held without a host.

"variety" reporting for the first time in nearly three decades the academy awards show will have no host, instead taking on a new format -- delegating the role of emcee to a series of stars set to introduce various segments. the producers of this year's show left scrambling to line up top talent to carry on the ceremony now just six weeks away. it comes after comedian kevin hart stepped down as host last month, two days after he was tapped to host. the reason? past comedy routine and tweets

you're back here. >> it feels good after looking at these clips. . nice to have a t-shirt on, sitting indoors. haven't been home yet. i'm tired. great to be here. >> we have your home away from your home right here which is your sled. we have so many questions. like logistics. the weight was very important. you're pulling this sled across. how did you plan for this? how did you pull it off >> a year in the planning or even more. my wife is a huge part of this. she's my business partner, fellow dreamer. we together figured out the logistics. there were 375 pounds in that sled mostly food and fuel and, yeah, a lot goes in figuring out the details. >> you said you brought just two pairs of socks and no change of underwear. >> i'm getting no resupplies with no aid no kites. with that being important every ounce is too much. >> but now how did you transmit

because you did instagram posts. how did do you that. no wi-fi down there? >> it was important for me to share the story with the world. i had a sat phone. sent instagram photos every night. >> we saw the high moments. but there were those dark and scary moments. when you see the vastness you really are all alone out there. when you were at your lowest, what did you tell yourself to make it through that moment? >> my mantra has been this too shall change. i realize everything is changing. even though i'm alone people all over cheering me on. through my nonprofit we had school kids tuning in. that kept me going. made me feel like i wasn't alone to tap into energy of other people cheering me on. >> you've walked across that most of us will never ever see. what was that like? we know cold. snowy. is it windy?

right now as we come up on 7:56, we still have some dense fog across parts of the bay area. we are seeing a little bit better in dublin but that fob has been drifting around creating in some spots near zero visibility. we are going to see this for at least the next couple of hours. then as it clears we'll get sunshine for the afternoon. no worries about rain today but tomorrow our next storm system will be moving again. we'll start to see the first wave of scattered showers late morning into early afternoon but some of the heavier rain will be here in time for tomorrow evening commute. still some waves of rain in the forecast for friday night into saturday morning but then by the afternoon we should see that activity tapering off. we are going to see another storm system moving in on sunday with more active weather early next week. let's get an update on how that fog is impacting the commute

of is, how am i going to lose the baby weight, what am i going to do how much was that on your mind? >> i think that's why i'm here talking about this. for me, that's something that -- my struggle is not in weight loss, right? it's about -- mine is about staying healthy, trying to stay focused and balanced on being healthy. one of the things about this new kind of, you know, reimagining of ww is that it is not just about weight. it's about wellness. that, to me, is, you know, something that -- for me, it is all about support. you always need a support system, whether it be, you know, a trainer, a best friend, an app, right? everyone is looking to know, how do we get motivated? how do we stay motivated? that's the number one thing people always ask me. then when i met oprah. >> just like saying her name.

♪ we are so happy to have carkarlie kloss here. talked to her over the years, supermodel, and she has a great story. you probably know this year marks the 50th anniversary of the apollo 11 moon landing. the museum holding some of the most precious artifacts is packing up for a big renovation. >> it is a huge overtaking, overseen by the museum's first female director, ellen stofan. she bonded with karlie over their love of space and getting young women interested in science. >> you're the director. do you get goosebumps walking

into the museum? >> when i look at things that have been in space, it never fails to give me goosebumps. >> reporter: it is hard not to get goosebumps at the smithsonian national air and space museum. here's the spirit of st. louis. it is no surprise it is the most popular museum in the country. so it'll be moved. if there is a favorite exhibit for new director dr. ellen stofan, it would be this one. you have a personal connection to the viking lander. >> that's right. because i actually saw the real viking landers launch to mars in 1975. my dad was in charge of the two rockets. they were titan scentars launching the mission to mars. it is an incredible, emotional experience, knowing, destination mars. >> reporter: growing up in ohio, it was hard for stofan to imagine she'd eventually become ana nasa scientist, let alone,e first female head of the

smithsonian national air and space museum. >> at the time, i didn't think of myself working for nasa. everybody looked like my dad. >> reporter: it was that viking mission to mars that changed everything. setting stofan on the path to be a planetary geologist at nasa, working missions to venus and one of the moons. stofan became a chief scientist, helping develop plans to send humans to mars. she started at the smithsonian last spring, a stellar career that wasn't always based on perfect grades. >> there was one subject that tripped you up. which one was that? >> you know, i was really struggling in math. i stuck with it. you know, at times, i got cs in math class. one point, i had a professor say to me, you got a c in the class. i was like, i know. do you believe it? i thought i was going to fail. that didn't go over well. >> a c is a celebration sometimes. >> it is. it is. yet, i talk to kids who think, you have to be the number one in the class. to me, it's more about the passion. if you're passionate about

something, stick with it. don't let a c in math stop you. >> reporter: math isn't stopping these students. participating in a coding program at the smithsonian, targeting middle schoolers. >> how much of you guys think you might want to be future scientists? >> oh, come on. >> me! >> reporter: these students don't have a look very far for a role model. >> people said to me, is it important you're the first woman director? i want to say, no, of course not. women are completely capable of doing anything. but it is important because i want to inspire that girl who comes into this museum to say, i could run the air and space museum, but even more, i could be the first girl to walk on mars. so you can see. >> reporter: running the museum these days is no small task. >> these are the f-1 engines. trying that make sure these engines are in good shape, getting ready to move them into the storage facility. >> reporter: how do you use a saturn f-1 engine? >> carefully. these things are incredibly heavy. >> reporter: the air and space museum is just starting to pack up for a seven-year, $1 billion

renovati renovation, and this is no average moving job. what's happening here? >> so all the artifacts you see in front of you were part of the apollo program. >> reporter: wow. >> you can see the care we're taking with the artifacts. these are preserved for the nation. >> reporter: another display that will be preserved. wow. ellen, this is so cool. my eye immediately goes to this wall of photos. a photo wall in stofan's office, dead nadicated to air and space pioneers that look a little bit more like her. >> whether it's jerry cobb, who was one of the mercury 13, and amazing aviators, from the first african-american pilot to american air hearamelia earhart. these women are carrying on what they started. >> reporter: i love that you're inspired by generations before you. you certainly inspire me and many, many generations to come. so thank you for all that you

>> he's the greatest. he is a force of nature. he's so positive, so interested in, like, changing the world for the better and promoting positive energy. it is infectious. he is a wonderful man. >> he does make you want to be a better person. >> yeah. >> he is an inspiring guy, yeah. >> what were you telling us before we came on? >> this is amazing. >> a story about tracing your roots. >> i went on the pbs show "finding your roots." >> what happened? >> i agreed to do it because my mother was adopted and had never known who her birth parents were. she said, if you think you have a chance of figuring it out, do it. she's in our early 70s now. she has tried many times to figure it out and was worried she'd never know. i did it, and they figured it all out. turned out she was half sicilian. >> wow. >> half jewish. we always thought she was adopted from a jewish adoption agency. >> right. >> which i didn't realize, i was watching with my friends, and yorma and his wife, and the adoption thing came up. they were like, it's the adoption agency from three
