>> i have to bring you sad news on the peninsula, caltrain service, a deadly crash on the tracks on whipple avenue. avoid whipple avenue and el camino. we slowing there. live camera on the scene shows i believe the coroner has arrived to start the investigation there. it will be affected by the traffic control and we'll see how the train times are building up. >> thanks so much, kari and mike. developing this morning, california department of justice is attempting to block the sale of three hospitals to santa clara county. among them, o'connor hospital in san jose, st. louise regional center in gilroy, and the de paul center in morgan hill. the california attorney general filed an appeal of the u.s. bankruptcy court's sale, asking the court to stop the sale. this is putting the $235 million deal in jeopardy. santa clara county was hoping to add the hospitals to its health

care system after verity health wanted to sell them. it includes santa clara valley medical center in san jose. happening today, the u.s. supreme court is scheduled to review and perhaps decide the white house decision barring transgender military members. in 2017, president trump first indicated that the government would no longer allow transgender people from serving. later, the defense department clarified that transgender people could serve as the gender an their certificate. they may issue a ruling or continue until a later date. new for you this morning, california's senator kamala harass is opening up about the possibility of jumping into the 2020 presidential race. last night, she appeared on stephen colbert. >> there's been some reporting that you will announce this on mlk day, january 21st. should i keep my schedule open that day, or should i drunk a

lot of cough syrup on the 20th and wake up on the 22nd? >> we always honor the great dr. martin luther king on january 21st. >> she said she "might run" for the oval office. harris was promoting her new memoirs "the truths we hold," which was published this week. quarter to 7:00. one of our top stories, today is federal payday around the nation, it's supposed to be president workers are not receiving their paychecks for the first time since the shutdown started three weeks ago. workers tell us they're already starting to feel it in their wallets. >> our household now has zero income. >> we implement the clean water act, the clean air act, safe drinking water act, that's not happening. >> among others going without pay, more than 50,000 tsa officers and 13,000 fbi agents. a startling tweet this morning from president trump, that could have a big impact on

silicon valley. >> scott mcgrew, the president wants to give h1-b visa holders a path to citizenship. >> startling. we have to frame this as a negotiation bid in the immigration debate. this would be enormous for silicon valley where we employ thousands of people from overseas, highly educated, highly skilled workers here on their visa. "h 1-b holders in the united states can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship. we want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the u.s." this is a big turnaround. it was not long ago the trump administration was talking about not just reducing the number of h1-b visas, but pulling the work permits from visa holders' spouses and children. so for instance, if an engineer
6:47 am
comes here from india, and his wife is a doctor, washington had been talking about not letting her be a doctor in america or not letting their daughter work at the food court at the mall, and then all of a sudden, there is this talk about citizenship. we have to think of this in the context of the argument over the wall. video here of the president visiting the border yesterday, this could be purely contingent on a move by democrats to offer funding, and they've been clearly unwilling to do so. the house has once again voted to reopen parts of the government, this, too, is a stunt because they know it won't get past the senate. mitch mcconnell will not let the bill hit the floor. but note those numbers on that latest vote, 12 republicans voted yes to open the government, up from eight the day before. the world still talking about president trump's statement yesterday. he said he never said mexico would pay for the wall. take a look. >> when during the campaign, i would say mexico is going to pay
6:48 am
for it, obviously i never said this, and i never meant they're going to write out a check. >> i posted that video to twitter and facebook, and man, are thousands of people arguing over that. i'll tell you this, on facebook, i can delete your comments if you call each other names and i'm doing that. follow me both on twitter and facebook. >> thanks, scott. 6:48. new this morning, spying apparently just got a little easier for people using apple airpods. but apple didn't really intend for it to work that way. apple rolled out a new tool with its latest ios called live listen. it's meant to help the hearing impaired but according to reports, when activated the app allows to you leave your phone in a room and walk away 50 feet and you can still hear sounds through airpods, bringing up concerns about people spying on private conversations. >> hmm.
6:49 am
>> i'm not happy that. >> meanwhile i know that for people who would use that for hearing assistance and still go, huh? >> what are they saying? so, we're talking about the weather today and into this weekend and rain is in our future. >> we have a lot of changes on the way. we're looking good this morning as you start out. we are going to get a little bit of sunshine, but then those clouds move in, and the rain won't be far behind. here is a look at what the temperatures are like as you get ready to step out the door. mostly upper 40s and low 50s. mild start to the day in diridon station in san jose. little bit of sunshine through at least about 10:00 and more clouds as our highs head up into the low 60s. check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, as we get a live look outside in san jose. it is all good, as you start out, but if you'll be gone for most of the day, make sure you grab the umbrella. we also need a jacket because of the cool start, headed toward concord, we will start to see more clouds, and by 10:00, we're at 53 degrees, headed into the
6:50 am
upper 50s and look at that, you see the icon change over to rain. that's when some of the showers may start to move in. right now, storm ranger our mobile doppler radar giving us a look at what's going on with not a lot of rain now, but then as we go through the hour by hour outlook, we take it through 3:00, and about 3:30, we should start to see some of that rain moving over to the santa cruz mountains and moving into the rest of the bay area. that's through the evening commute, off and on rain and may get heavier as we go into tonight, but then we start to see that rain tapering off by early tomorrow morning, but still there will be a slight rain chance as we go throughout the day, and then on sunday, the next storm system will be here, so we only have a little bit of a break in between, and the rain we'll see during the overnight hours brings us anywhere from a half to three-quarters of an inch, most of us seeing a half inch of rain or less. there will be a break from the showers by tomorrow afternoon.
6:51 am
sunday is when the next storm system moves in, and then it just stays really soggy throughout much of next week, off and on waves of rain moving through, as our high temperatures only stay in the mid to upper 50s. morning temperatures near 50 degrees. and mike, you have continuing delays for caltrain. >> i do. that is one of the aftereffects, the big story, of course, someone was killed on the caltrain tracks in redwood city. while we follow that story and any other information that we can share with you, we are talking about the delay for caltrain lines coming through redwood city, only single tracking, only your northbound tracks are available for both directions, so they have to take turns. we'll get you out to the area, bob redell's crew arrived on scene and they're showing us here, i'll clear for a second, you see the railroad crossing in the distance. you see a fedex building, folks familiar with the area know that's the railroad crossing at whipple avenue. they step back into the scene. there are caltrans workers and no traffic. we have seen trains cross from time to time. as we get back out to the maps system, we'll talk about what we see. in the distance, you might have
6:52 am
seen highway 82 sign, that's the freeway designation for el camino, although it's a major roadway here, it's still known as california highway 82, and there is slowing through the area as well. partially because of the flashing lights and the distraction, i'm sure, but the roadway is open, but also this is just north of woodside road and a lot more traffic building through that area for the surface streets. freeways on the peninsula move nicely. slowing for the south bay, but north 101 may improve. i do believe the crash over at trimble has cleared with the fire crew that was blocking the slow lane. that's the reason why we have this stretch of slowing and we have over here north 87, a crash for a short period of time, did block one lane of traffic, just north of that 280 interchange. it looks like that's cleared up as well. as we zoom out, we show you the south bay, although the volume is starting to build and we see a pretty typical pattern, this focused slowing from 101 around 068 all the way up toward san jose airport, that should smooth out a bit over the next half hour, because lighter friday flows allow for some recovery later in the commute. smooth drive and no problems, but patchy fog reported where
6:53 am
you see the yellow highlights through the tri valley, east bay moves nicely though, and a light flow of traffic over toward the bay bridge. the metering lights are on but this is the only backup that we see. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:52. breaking news, the department of defense is beginning its withdrawal of u.s. troops in syria. right now, there are no specific timetables of when the members of the military will be home. there are 2,000 u.s. troops in syria. confirmation of the first withdrawals come amid confusion over plans to implement president trump's pullout order. and up next, the top stories we're continuing to cover on "today in the bay." our top story, if you're just joining us, a young police officer died overnight, after a shooting in davis. already this morning, a procession through the fog for officer natalie corona. everything we've learned overnight, coming up next. you're watching "today in the bay." don't miss the grand opening of the new floor & decor

in july, and get this, she only completed her field training just before christmas. so she's only been on the job for just a few weeks. now, i want to show you video of the procession from this morning, as corona's body was taken from the uc davis medical center to the yolo county sheriff's office in woodland. as far as what took place here, we know that according to davis police, the shooting happened in downtown davis, just where we showed you before 7:00 p.m. last night. corona was shot while responding to a multicar crash. she was rushed to uc davis medical center for her injuries, where she died from those injuries. after a temporary lockdown in davis to search for the suspect, police eventually found the suspect dead inside of the home from what appear to be self-inflicted gunshot wound. let's take you back out here live to the scene right now this morning. we know corona was considered to be a rising star in this department. police say she is survived by her parents at this time. this is still clearly an active investigation. we're live here in davis, pete suratos for "today in the bay."
6:58 am

7:00 am
