"early today" starts right now. good monday morning. i'm phillip mena. >> great being with you. i'm frances rivera. millions were in the path of a deadly winter blast this weekend. the storm contributed to at least seven deaths in the midwest. some of the hardest hit areas were missouri where several enter states were shutdown and many drivers left stranded. a delta plane slid off the tarmac sunday morning when arriving in northern kentucky where nearly 9 inches of snow fell. fortunately, there were no injuries. icy conditions led to the cancellations of more thanay 25 they responded to more than 230 traffic crashes. the storm knocked out power for nearly 200,000 people in virginia and north carolina. drivers are urged to stay off the roads around the nation's capital where the storm has dumped more than 10 inches of snow in some areas and winter weather advisories are in effect until 10:00 a.m. >> president trump facing tough questions this morning over his relationship with russia following a pair of bombshell

reports. "the new york times" detailed an fbi investigation into whether the president himself was working for russia. while the washington post reported claims mr. trump concealed details about his face-to-face meetings with russian leader vladimir putin. the president took to twitter in wake of these stories tweeting over two dozen times throughout the weekend. it started saturday morning with a volley of six tweets about the russia investigation, specifically targeting the fbi and its former director james comey. the tweet storm ended with the president talking about everything from border security and the wall to his push to withdraw troops from syria. he also poked fun at one of his 2020 competitors, senator elizabeth warren, and took jabs at amazon c.e.o. and "washington post" owner jeff bezos who he dubbed jeff bozo. nbc's susan mcennis joining us from washington, d.c. susan, good morning. now we have this russia cloud hanging over the longest government shutdown in history. >> reporter: that's right, phillip. 24 days for the government shutdown and the president

spending much of his weekend lashing out and defending himself against those two reports in "the new york times" and the washington post both dealing with the president's behavior regarding russia. "the new york times" said the fbi opened an investigation into the firing of james comey whether the president was operating on behalf of russia and against american interests, and then "washington post," the president reportedly going to great lengths following meetings with president putin, going so far as to snatching back notes from interpreters and telling an interpreter not to discuss any details of the meeting. here's reaction from both sides of the aisle. i don't get it. >>ith worldde tmp say only nice things about putin. he never spoke ill about russia. emocrats havehi infa massive infatuation with russia and putin. >> reporter: the stalemate continues with president trump

demanding border wall funding in order to reopen the government. democrats insisting the government reopen first, and then talks continue then. the pressure does seem to be building on the white house with the most recent polls, showing that republicans are shouldering most of the blame for this government shutdown. we do have one senior republican coming out saying he has a suggestion. how about opening the government for three weeks while talks continue, and if that does not happen, phillip, the president can then exercise that threat he made to declare a national emergency and have the wall built himself. >> it's been two dozen days now. susan, thank you. >> meanwhile, new reports this morning of a different kind of showdown during shutdown talks. according to axios, president trump lashed out at his acting chief of staff, mick mulvaney during a bipartisan meeting with leaders earlier this month. mulvaney suggested a middle gro and reopen the government. mr. trump didn't take too kindly to the suggestion saying, quote, you just [ bleep ]ed it all up,

breaking news. one person is dead and a police officer was injured following a killing shoot out in duluth, minnesota. police say it started with intense domestic assault call before the suspect began firing at them. bullets struck one officer and killed a canine police dog. officers returned shots and the suspect was later found dead inside the home. the officer who was hit has been released from the hospital. the four-legged canine killed in the line of duty joined the force in may of 2017. >> leading the news, a heated confrontation turns deadfully phoenix. police say a man got into a verbal altercation that turned physical before escalating to a shooting outside a motel leaving at least one dead. in all, three women and three men suffered gunshot wounds, including the 18-year-old woman who died. the suspect is reported to be among the injured, but authorities said their still searching for a possible accomplice. >> we have an update for you about the lie on air jet liner that crashed in october killing all 189 on board. the indonesian navy has
