as more and more workers are calling in sick. they are not getting paid. they are not getting paychecks and that the airport in atlanta, georgia, a check point was shut down yesterday. it lead to massive line and delays. sfo is not directly impacted because of issues and using private security not tsa. however, san jose and oakland airports do have tsa workers. the debate over one school district's name. some find the name offensive. board members will consider a petition to change it. we are live with details, name of the school and what's going on there, pete. >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you. we are talking about the dixie unified school district. they wil discuss possible name change. it has been a pretty big source of controversy.

we are talking only about four schools here roughly serving about 1,700 students. there are folks calling for a name clang here. they are calling for this saying that the dixie name is named after the confederacy during the civ civil war. there are those that want to keep the name dlaming thclaimed was flamed after an indian woman. we spoke with an organizer that has enough signatures to at least get a hearing about a possible name change. he says the name needs to be changed regardless of origins. >> it is not really the intent, it's the impact. you have to take a look at that now, i want a time or n. change. portion of the statement. they tell me they want toroup o

will bring us scattered showers. potential of a few isolated thunderstorms. there will be a stronger storm moving in. as of today we are expecting rainfall, about half an inch of rain or less. wind speeds at about 40 miles per hour and thunder, we could see an isolated risk of that with surf up to about 12 feet. as we go throughout the day there will be a wave of heavier rain moving there south to north. this is when we could see the isolated lightening along with heavy winds and heavy rain as well. we will see this activity tapering off tonight as we get ready for strong storm system to move in. you were tracking a delay with bart. >> that's right. we said 10 now 20 minutes. they are also in recovery mode. whatever equipment problem was going on it's okay. it is clear now.

we head up over the bay and heading towards rifchmond. it has been spotty and more widespread as it continues to move off towards the north. there we are seeing some pretty widespread rain and a couple of lightning strikes. there is a lot of activity out here in the pacific over the next couple of days. when the next storm movers in the rainfall rates will be higher. we may see 1 to 4 inches of rain between wednesday and thursday. it elevates the flood risk. as we look at wind speeds we may have gusts and isolated threat of thunderstorms and waves reaching up to 25 feet. we will also have a high wind watch as we may get winds up to 60 miles per hour. it could down some trees. as we look at the forecast for today it will start to get gusty

over parts of the south bay. wind speeds at about 35 to 40 miles per hour. it will calm down tonight and then ramp up again once again tomorrow as stronger storms move in. we are all going to have a strong southerly wind that could bring down trees and also come along with heavy rain. spotty showers today and off and on activity. we will see a round of heavy rain right around noon. it may keep you inside for lunch and may slow you down as you head out for the evening commute. still scattered showers in the forecast as we go throughout the day. heading into tomorrow we start out mostly with quiet weather. once again it will get very busy tomorrow evening as that stronger storm system moves in. once it is all said and done may reach over 3 inches there. for most of the bay area we are looking at from 1 to 3 inchesover rain.

along with high winds. i'll detail that. you're getting us a look at the bay bridge. >> we had two crashes. i think one of them has cleared. the second one shows activities. this is along the right shoulder there. that is a distraction. you noticed this behind it has cleared. the reason is because metering lights have been turned on. so it's not any worse because of that crash on this itself. the big factor is the rain here. i have this rain here coming over the peninsula. back to you. >> thanks. new for you a hotel employee attacked overniegght. there is video of that scene. this is the hilton hotel. police say that the employee was stabbed with a metal object on the side of its neck.

you can see him right there in the back of that ambulance. officers arrested the suspect a short time lateren side the hotel. the employee is expected to be okay. it's not clear what lead to that attack. it is 5:33. federal government is taking the company responsible for clean up to court. today in the bay joins us live with all of the new details thi i ive unit. they have just filed three lawsuits. they are an engineering firm to clean up the old hunters point naval shipyard. the feds accused the company of fraud that was initiated by corporate managers. according to the lawsuits they

submitted false soil sample test results by switching out soil that was possibly contaminated. again, they were looking for radiation contamination. the radiation comes from ships that ran on nuclear power and animaler animal resource. >> navy has been cleaning up the area so it can eventually be turned over for redevelopment. a spokesperson says that the work performed was thorough, appropriate and overedneseen by navy. i with was to ensure compliance and public safety. misleading claims stemmed from isolated acts by two rogue

went up in flames. authorities shut down a stretch of interstate 80 in vacaville. shots were fired. the suspect was hit. police not giving an update so far on his injuries or the injuries of a cay nnine that is also being treated. police say the stabbing victims are expected to be okay. 5:36. today marks day 25 of the partial government shutdown. it is the longest shutdown in history with no end in sight. some 800,000 employees are going without pay checks. this morning president trump isn't backing down from his push for that border wall funding. he wrote in part a big new caravan is heading up to our southern border from honduras. only a wall will work. the government shutdown continues to trickle into our local community. they are taking action to help those that depend on federal

services that could be caught in the middle of all of this. we are live in san jose with more on the county and wt they are doing to help people put food on their tables, chris. >> reporter: hi there. we are talking about folks that depend on cal fresh for food assistance. we are talking about not only santa clara but also alameda that will start disbursing payments early to make sure these folks get what they are expecting to make ends meet. the counties are issues benefits early to make sure that the funds are still available. they are not extra funds. they are february benefits being issued starting today. if the shut down goes into march there will be no funding for snap which is the nutrition program. that means no food stamp funding, no wic assistance and even school lunches could be impacted as well.

neighborhood after reports of a home invasion. new video of the scene coming near the news room. it happened in ocean view. officers arrived just after 12:30 in the morning. it blocked off a big part of the neighborhood. we are working to learn more details. we hear police are looking for suspects. >> video of an overnight crash that seriously injured one of two drivers. it happened on monterey road where highway 85 meets responder rear ef that car was hit while walking around afterward. the other driver suffered more serious injuries and is in the hospital. the crash closed far time. it is open again. today marks day two of a massive teachers strike in los angeles. the second largest school district. the district scrambled to hire

substitutes. attendance is is down. here is what the educators say they are demanding. >> we all want lower class size. we all want librarians in our schools. it is what we have to pay all of the salaries. >> the district says there's no money to meet the union's demands. >> an important day for the president on capitol hill. >> a pick for attorney general faces big questions. >> he already has his answers we understand that barr is going to say yes. >> will face a senate committee today as part of his confirmation process. barr has been critical saying president trump had the right to fire fbi director james comey.
