we )re seeing a lot of damage in the santa cruz mountains. the storm leading to mudslides and bringing trees down. today in the bay )s kris sanchez is live near highway 17. kris -- we were at a dead standstill for a few minutes as chp

here is the reason why. that mudslide that came down right around the midnight hour between midnight and 1:00 last night. it came down on highway 17, los gatos and bear creek near the cats restaurant. you can see caltrans crews were trying to clear that area. it did make some headway and we were just wrapped up in the last part of that cleanup this morning. but the big story here in the santa cruz mountains is going to be skyline road near summit. that's where a mudslide came down and shut down both lanestr. we have a crew that's shooting video. but it is so tricky, it's a hard

time getting back from there. as soon as we get that video that will come to you hopefully at 4:30. > thank you, kris. >> not just mudslide b lot amofe ass well. one person sadly died because of the storm. >> downed trees a homeless man in heoakland. the man was most likely trying to seek shelter. a woman watched as chp and the l.a. coroner's office investigated the incident. >> the weather is really, really bad. to unfortunate people had lose their life. >> no one else was hurt. a big ride on its side, richmond, san rafael bridge. chp tell&e us that truckdriver s not hurt. high wind gustt contributed to the rollover. pg&e scrambled through the night to restore power. the stormag brought down power

lines in san jose at kunear lee 1,000 outages. we learned in the last hour that's been cut in half. you can see aotacross the bay a >> live in novato where there were a lot of people without power there, tom. >> reporter: you're right, guys. we moved to san rafael where we are right now. just off highway 101 northbound at irwin street just off the on ramp there, just up the block. this is what we're seeing. just like you guys were talking about, downed trees. this one the top of the tree thates blew off in the high win. trees down all over this street and around the san rafael area. we've got warnings from pg&e out here this morning that some of these power line could still be live. a pg&e worker on the scene wa any closer

because of the uncertainty about whether or not those lines were hot. we also saw the top of this large tree that broke off in high winds down the street. downed power lines and other wind related damage knocked out power to nearly 17,000 customers in the north bay. many still without power. no idea when it will be restored. thousands of households and businesses have been without power for several hours. we did get new numbers just a short time ago from pg&e. those numbers, as you heard, have been decreased, cut in half. fewer than 36,000 customers now across the bay area without power. nearly half of them, all of them up here in the north bay. we did see a lot of pg&e crews out here in the san rafael area this morning. at least three different crews trying to restore power. we got those updated numbers, which were good. also, as we were driving back to this location from some other outages north of us on 101, we noticed a whole bank of lights

across san rafael coming back on as we were driving south. maybe we'll have some new numbers from pg&e here shortly. we're live in san rafael, tom jenson,to "today in the bay." >> 4:07. along with power outages, flooding a concern. >> bob redell live in concourt with new video this morning. bob, how are things looking out there? >> right now it looks great. we're out here at port chicago highway in front of the military ocean terminal here also norm early known as concord naval weapons station. you can see the roads are wet, not flooded, as opposed to what they looked like a few hours ago. that's when mount diablo creek overflowed, flooding this section of the highway. you can see it's up 2 to 3" there. fortunately it did recede. th is 200 block of astrid..

again, similar situation where you had nearby waterway that overflowed and flooded the roads. here we are a couple of hours after the storm has left the area and we're left with wet roads. if you are heading out, at least this part in cocoa county, we're not seeing flooding but wet roads. something to keep an eye on so you're obviously watching your speed and the distance between you and the driver in front of you. reporting live in concord, "today in the bay.." the update there. >> coming up next on "today in the bay," thisrd powerful storm system that made its way. now heading to the mountains. more on the rare blizzard more on the rare blizzard warning i sierra up next.

that was so different last night. microclimate weather alert i should. the radar looking clear but that was a different story last night. let's take a look live at sfo and hope things are better there today for air travelers. because of those high winds some arriving flights were delayed more than six hours. of course that had a ripple effect for departing flights. that weather did not significantly impact flights at san jose or oakland. if you're flying, make sure you check ahead. driving conditions best. as kari mentioned, the area around tahoe dealing with blizzard conditions.

i don't see any traffic moving through here now. it's been pretty slow going for the cars we have seen moving through the area. change, of course, required. here is how it lookedremain. this the first blizzard warning in the saf snow could fall in some areas. >> coming up on "today in the bay," kari following our rain totals. break we'll get from that storm. >> here we are taking a live look outside in fremont. as we see that, the roads are looking a lot better. a little bit of a breeze. we are still going to have rain chances through much of the morning and the afternoon. i'll look at that with storm ranger coming up next. through oakland the camera shakes a little bit, slightly here. the bridges, hold on, as kari said. tracking the closure getting on the nimitz and getting across the bridges.

ad lib toss to wx and traffic . welcome to thursday morning. a live lookslick. be careful as you head out the door. so much rainfall, thunder, lightning, you name it. >> it was busy for a few hours. then it was just like, okay, still windy. at least we know the storm is moving out. we are still dealing with breezy winds. the roads are starting to dry out. the cars in front may be kicking up water. a look outside at 101 and san

jo jose. let's get a look at flood warning. we have another hour of the flood warning. we'll continue to watch river levels, petaluma river park. gradually the water will start to recede as we go throughout the day. we're still seeing some scattered showers in the area and even some thunderstorms. a lot of live lightning. you're hearing the thunder roaring right now around parts of mendocino county and moving over to ukiah, as we're still picking up on a lot of rain and even some energy that will still have potential to produce thunderstorms as we go throughout the morning. you can see the connection of all of that rain that's moving across the pacific and now targeting southern california with lightning moving into the l.a. ll. looking thrgh 8:00 to 9:00 for all of the bay area. but most of it will be farther to the north of the golden gate bridge and even into this

afternoon and evening hin moviny that will continue to add up on those rainfall totals. it even still shows some light rain that will be with us through tomorrow morning. farther to the north while the rest of the bay area kind of gets a chance to dry out from all of this wet weather. so additional rainfall totals on what we could see today for the south bay really not measuring too much. .1 to .25" east bay and higher amounts to the north for today. let's talk about wind speeds. big rock ridge near novato. look at that. 98 miles per hour gusts yesterday evening. mount saint helena had a gust of 86 miles per hour. sunol grade 68. at the airport and san francisco, 61 miles per hour gusts. even san jose reaching 44. it is gradually going to calm down today but still some breezy winds in showers and thunderstorms that develop.

concord looking at temperatures reaching into the upper 50s. i want to make sure you do still have the umbrellaasnd i'm still watching in the north bay for the potential of some flooding as the water kind of drains and then still causes some of those creeks and streams to rise. the green valley creek as well as russian river near here, petaluma river may still be near flooding today. i'm still tracking this storm. if you're following me on social media, i'll have updates throughout the day. we're also going to be tracking what they had for the next several days. rain chances for the north bay tomorrow. other than that, partly to mostly cloudy skies. saturday is looking partly cloudy. it will be another weak system moving in sunday and then we have a chance to enjoy sunshine for a while from monday to wednesday. and i'll also have updates on the lunar eclipse an king tides

for coastal areas for sunday to monday. a lot going on here. but you were saying you might want to avoed oid one of our bridges. >> you have a big checklist, i have an interesting one. san jose to peninsula, you may want to use this instead of dumbarton bridge. look how clear. they did give warnings about gustq winds, kari talking about the change in condition around the bay. we're looking at a smooth drive as far as speed sensors go. call your attention to this side of the bay. the east side coming over from this side, eastbound 84. you're going to want to exit if you're heading to 880, exit, rejoin at fremont boulevard. you are currently cut off from northbound 880 if you take 84 all the way over. you can't. you're forced onto southbound 880. theres a cleanup with an overturned rig. check with pete as he gives us another update.

a tough time overpass, we have sky boulevard with a closure because of a mudslide east of highway 17 towards bear creek road. keep that in mind. we have a smooth drive but wet roadways through south county as well. live look shows north bay driving from east bay. you see puddles on the road, light, light traffic flow. richmond to san rafael, might get a gust or two but westbound on the commute is very light. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 4:20 right now. heartbreaking new details emerging for the american killed in an attack in kenya. he had bay area ties. turns out he was a 9/11 survivor. he was working twin towers. he re-evaluated his life and joined the peace corps. that led him to an advisory firm helping businesses in emerging markets. that's why he was in nairobi.

>> we were getting ready to get together with him for his birthday. he was going to come back to the states. >> big loss for him. he was among 21 people killed innen a attack at a hotel and office complex. islamic extremist groupal shab has claimed responsibility. >> now to capitol hill where today marks 27 of the partial government shutdown. the house passed a democratic measure to reopen the government through february 8th. however, the white house says that president trump would veto that if it reached his desk because it does not include funding for a borderuggeing the state of the union address be rescheduled because of the citdo security concerns. what the federal government of san jose is stepping up to do can't do right now.

the most p cleared out of the area. kari is going to tell us about what we can expect throughout the day. more showers in the forecast? stick around. she'll tell us all about that. back to our coverage of the storm and its impact. investigators are trying to figure out if wet conditions played a role in a crash in san jose. this played a part at the height of the storm. the mangled pickup on the median at capital expressway. police were unable to tell us if that driver suffered any injuries. as we've been reporting, the storm brought down several trees throughout the area. a viewer, in fact, sent us for t the -- photos of a 100-year-old tree. this happened during the storm. luy areom case cars took back s to jet skis. someone through the street in
