5:41 am
are we supposed to based on what we heard from the special counsel's office dismiss everything in that article? where does it leave us this morning? >> it is true as kelly said that it is a stunning development for the special counsel to issue a statement so rare for them to do so. reporters around washington were surprised to see that happen. but many news organizations had struggled all day to corroborate the story. that doesn't mean however that russia questions still don't confront this president. you have attorney general nominee bill barr facing tough questions on capitol hill about robert mueller's report, how the doj would handle it. you have the ongoing congressional investigations that are just kicking off. those all loom over this presidency. >> and you heard kelly mention the tweet from the president. the president frequently calls the press fake news and he said is a very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our country. does this just add more fuel for the president, does it make it harder for journalists to report this story?
5:42 am
>> the press is always a political target for some politicians on both right and left. president trump in particular has used terms like fake news and enemy of the people to try to erode the institutional credibility of the press. at the same time, the press has been vigorous in this country for many, many year, centuries, being the fourth he state, tryi to have accountability on those in power. >> and president is expected to make what he is calling a major announcement as it relates to the shutdown and border security. we heard from him in the oval office about a week ago where there wasn't a lot of new information there. is there anything in particular you're hearing from your sources about what we'll get from the president? he had been threatening a national emergency just a couple days ago. >> and that is still under discussion based on my reporting. they say the president's remarks saturday will be similar to what he said in his recent address to the country trying to make the case that there is a crisis at the border, humanitarian and
