deep freeze. what are we looking at here? >> this is like cold. this is hit you in the face cold. we haven't seen it yet this cold so far this season. windchills are running 15 to 35 degrees below zero this morning, so we have windchill advisories and windchill warnings in effect. let's show you some of the numbers. washington, d.c. it's 15. it feels like 1 below. new york city, it feels like 15 below and burlington, vermont, feels like 26 below. that extends back to the great lakes as well. we're approaching record lows, although we're not really setting records this morning. the old record in boston is 8. we're forecasting a low of about 4 degrees this morning. kalamazoo is 13 below, so not quite records, but, still, very close to it. and we are going to continue with the cold throughout the day today. high temperatures will be running about 15 to 25 degrees below average as this lobe of colder air settles in from the north. we are looking for a high of only 18 in new york and 9 in boston and 5 below in lake placid and detroit 13 degrees this. cold extends down south, too,

with temperatures running 10 to 20 below average. atlanta 41 today which is ten degrees below average. get through today because starting tomorrow and wednesday temperatures up and down the east coast will rebound. temperatures will rebound by wednesday. so it is going to warm up. sheinelle? >> now to the lingering problems from the weekend storm. nbc's kathy park is up inable any, new york where people were hit with more than a foot of snow. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, a good morning to you. the current temperature here in albany is ninus 5 and when you factor in windchill it's negative 28 this. cold is expected to last all day making for treacherous travel and dangerous conditions if you plan on being outdoors. >> reporter: a nasty winter storm over the weekend, burying parts of the midwest and northeast. this morning millions are dealing with the frozen fallout. the storm packing a powerful bunch, freezing new york's hudson river.

strong waves pounding the eastern seaboard. parts of coastal massachusetts underwater. now officials concerned about the dangerous temperature drop overnight. >> the windchill when you're talking about minus 5, minus 10, minus 15-degree windchill that's serious. >> reporter: plow operators racing against time to clear the roads before the dope freeze. >> so the goal is to get all this cleared hopefully before it all freezes over tomorrow. >> yes, absolutely. we do not want it to be frozen, that's for sure. >> reporter: travel treacherous across multiple states. slick conditions to blame for hundreds of crashes and dozens of injuries. in missouri the state highway patrol reporting two fatalities from weather-related crashes, and in connecticut a utility worker killed repairing a downed line after a tree fell on him. air travel has also been affected. more than 1,600 flights cancelled. another 2,700 delayed.

and it was a shivery stat in goose bay, canada, for these united passenger. after a door broke they one able to deplane and wound up sitting on an icy tarmac for a frosty 14 hours. back in albany, new york, while some were digging out others were having fun. most warming up to the idea of spending today inside. do you have somewhere to be today or tomorrow? >> no. no work for the next three days. >> reporter: is that a good thing? >> yes, i get to dig out and go back in a warm house in my bed. >> reporter: and now if you're going to get a chance to dig out sunday, here's a problem. the icy temperatures created a solid layer over these large snow mounds so it's going to be a lot more difficult to dig out today. sheinelle, craig. >> just looking at you, i'm cold. kathy, thank you. to the breaking news we mentioned at the top of the show. a deadly attack carried out on a u.s.-led convoy in syria. nbc's lucy kafanov has the

latest on that. lucy, what do we know. >> reporter: craig, good morning. the pentagon confirmed that a convoy of swedish and kurdish forces were involved in a car bomb attack this morning. isis called the incident a suicide attack on its unofficial news agency. the syrian state media say the blast targeted a checkpoint near a town in the northeastern province of hasakah where the u.s. maintains a military base this. incident comes one week after isis claimed responsibility for a suicide attack in m ha mbij that killed a number of people, including four americans, two u.s. service members, a civilian working for the defense department and a contractor. the attacks complicate president trump's decision to withdraw all troops from syria, something he announced last month. the continued bombings underscore the pentagon's assertions that the islamic state remains a threat capable of deadly attacks. craig, sheinelle, back to you. >> lucy kafanov there for us, lucy, thank you. also this morning, the government shutdown hit the

one-year mark. 31 days and president trump and democrats are exchanging new jabs over what it will take to end it. there's also new developments in the mueller investigation. nbc's jeff bennett is at the white house covering it all. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. the moscow trump tower project is the focus of separate investigations by the special counsel and congressional lawmakers into links between the trump campaign and russia's interference in the 2016 election. well, now the president's personal attorney rudy giuliani is saying that mr. trump's company continued to pursue a business deal with russia up until the n which is far longer than the president previously acknowledged. this morning more questions about president trump's involvement in a deal to build a trump tower in moscow. mr. trump's personal lawyer rudy giuliani admitting for the first time that the talks continued until the 2016 presidential election, much later than previously known.

>> could be up to as far as october, november. it's covered since the election so any time during that period they could have talked about it. >> reporter: compare that to what then candidate trump said in 2016. >> i don't have anything to do with russia, we're all over the world but not involved in russia. >> reporter: giuliani denying that president trump told his previous lawyer michael cohen to lie to congress about the moscow project. >> are you 100% confident that the president never once asked michael cohen to do anything but tell the truth to congress? >> 100% certain of that. >> reporter: it follows a rare rebuke by the special counsel of a "buzzfeed" report that the president directed cohen to make false statements. the administration strongly hitting back at that report while also taking on critics of the president's latest effort to end the partial government shutdown now entering week five. a new proposed deal dead on arrival with democratic leaders who say they won't negotiate until the president agrees to reopen the government first.

again in a heartbeat before sitting at home like this. >> reporter: senate republican leader mitch mcconnell says the senate will start voting on president trump's new proposal this week. are ps are trying to shift the political dynamic of what has been the longest government shutdown in history since polls show that president trump is getting most of the blame. house democrats say they're pushing forward with legislation of their own to beef up security at the southern border without funding a wall. as this political back and forth plays out, tomorrow night marks the next federal payroll deadline, with no solution, those 800,000 affected government workers will miss another paycheck. craig and sheinelle. >> that's tough. thank you. new questions this morning surrounding an incident that went viral over the weekend. a lot of folks are talking about this. it shows a group of high school students from kentucky appearing to taunt a native american elder during a rally in washington. nbc's ron allen has been following this story and joins us this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning,

craig, those students were in town for the march for life, and they've been widely condemned for what many see as racist behavior. now they're facing possible expulsion from school. this morning they're pushing back saying there's more than one side to the story. >> this video near the lincoln memorial igniting outrage, native american nathan phillips a vietnam veteran beating a drum face-to-face with high school teens from kentucky. some wearing make america great again gear. >> i was scared. i was feared. >> the tribal elder said he stepped in to diffuse a confrontation between the teens and men identifying as hebrew israel identities. that group seen in a new video hurling insults at the teens. >> i intervened and things just escalated from there. >> reporter: the member of the hebrew israelites who filmed the encounter tell nbc news it started when the students were

mocking them. the kentucky catholic school and diocese that some of the students belong to saying in a statement, they condemn the actions of the students and we extend our deepest apologies to mr. phillips. we will take appropriate action up to and including expulsion. but now the student at the center of the controversy, nick sandman is speaking out. in a letter he writes he and his fellow students were verbally attacked first by the hebrew israelites and they only started performing chants after given permission by a chaperon. i was worried that the situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to provoke teenagers. he added that he smiled because i wanted him to know that i was not going to become angry, intimidated or be provoked into a larger confrontation. in videos other students can be seen making racist gestures. >> it represented a behavior and

indiana man on child molestation has drawn new attention. some say he looks a lot like a police sketch. >> this morning police in indiana are looking into a possible new lead in the murder of two teenagers, abby williams and libby german. the bodies of the girls were found two years ago a you have a hiking trail. the recent arrest of 46-year-old charles ed drij has caught the public's attention. some say he bears a striking resemblance to the man in this police sketch released in the delphi murder case. mike patdy is libby german's grandfather. >> we've had over 36,000 tips. there's been a lot of comparisons done. i don't mean to down play it, but this could just be another tip. >> abby's mother anna is also careful to not get too hopeful. >> we're not saying it's the guy because we don't know it's the guy, and we're still looking for the guy.

that's where we're at right now. >> for almost two years the killer has eluded police, the only evidence this grainy photo and a chilling recording of what's believed to be the suspect's voice caught on the girl's cell phone saying down the hill. >> police have received tens of thousands of tips in response to the arrest of charles eldridge. investigators in the case say the team is aware of this arrest and will investigate to see if there could be any connection to the murders that occurred in delp delphi, indiana, on february 14th of 2017 adding each tip whether it receives media attention or not is investigated for any connection to the delphi case. still, almost two years in the case remains cold. >> it is sad. nobody even here thought we would still be looking for somebody in two years in a town this size, but we are. >> the pain of the tragic murder doesn't get any easier. >> the second year has been harder than the first. >> nor does the fear that the killer is still out there. >> it's terrifying to walk around every day knowing that there's a person out there that could do something this

horrific. >> reporter: eldridge is due back in court in indiana next month on the child molestation charge. he has not commented and has no attorney on record. there's a $200,000 reward for information in the murder case. sheinelle and craig. >> thank you. let's switch gears now get another check of the forecast. >> we have the next storm system we're going it watch across the country. it's producing snow through salt lake city. the rockies will see several inches of snow out of this system. we're also seeing the outer bands of snow start to work into north dakota and minnesota as well. this will move eastward through the day today bringing the snow through the western plains. then as we go into tonight and tomorrow, it continues to move eastward. look at the push of warm air that comes with this system. by the time it moves through, the majority of the great lakes, through the midwest, the ohio river valley and eventually the east coast by the end of the week, there will be enough warm air in place that we're looking for a mostly rain event. not the case back through the

this morning tributes are pouring in for tony mendez who passed away at age 78 after a battle with parkinson's disease. ben affleck who portrayed mendez in his film argo tweeting tony mendez was a true american hero. he was a man of extraordinary grace, decency, humility and kindness. he never sought the spotlight for his actions. he merely sought to serve his country. mendez engineered the incredible 1980 rescue of six u.s. diplomats in post-revolutionary iran. he sat down with jenna in 2013. >> do you feel like they get the essence of what the cia does right? >> mostly movies about the cia they have the cia guy a deranged asas assass assassin. what we're hoping is we're going to start a new trend and make the cia guys lovable, and i'm the first lovable spy. >> mendez was recruited by the cia in 1965. he served during the cold war

slightly cooler tomorrow. and then we see that warming trend getting under way for the rest of the week. okay. now you can all go home, go warm up. >> sheinelle. >> it really is cold, thank you, dylan. now to a push tied to your child's education that's really gaining momentum. >> across the country, more schools are shifting to four-day school weeks citing benefits for students and teachers. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: the teacher's strike in los angeles comes after high profile walkouts across the country. from west virginia to oklahoma to arizona, all of them echoing worries over low wages and large class sizes, but some school districts have found a different way to boost morale, something that's helping them recruit and retain educators, a four-day school week. >> there's a teacher shortage nationwide. do you have a problem hiring teachers? >> we don't have a problem hiring teachers, and there's lots of reasons for it, but one

is the four-day week. >> at corbett high school outside portland, oregon, friday comes early. students here only go to school monday through thursday. >> our weekends are amazing tleer three day weekends. >> reporter: corbett's school made the the switch 20 years ago thinking it would save the district big money. >> that's probably not the reason to do it, isn it? >> that's the reason they did it, but that's not the reason i think you should do it. >> reporter: with fridays free for sports, extracurriculars and appointments, administrators say there are fewer interruptions and better attendance the rest of the week. 9th grade teacher jennifer radolesk communities 45 minutes to an hour each way with no complaints. >> and there are 50 districts between my house and here that i could teach at that are closer, and the drive is worth it to have the four-day week. >> having that extra day on the

weekend gives me a chance to replenish myself so i can come back and be the best teacher i can be. >> reporter: those four days are longer so they add up to the same amount of total instruction time in a five-day week. students say it's worth the tradeoff. >> i get more time with my family and i have more time with myself and i get to sleep more. >> about 560 districts in 25 states have four-day weeks. many are in rural areas. experts say it's not ideal for every school, including those with high poverty rates where a large number of students rely on free or reduced lunch. another possible negative? finding child care on that fifth weekday. in corbett we found no one who said that was an issue. >> we always just seem to make it work, whether they were with grandparents or an older brother or an uncle that could watch them. >> reporter: some critics worry not enough is known about the impact on students and there's not much research on how a four-day week affects academics

and we're back with more of our resolution revolution, and our no diet today plan. she's founder of js health. she got us started last week with some tips for breakfast. she's back this morning to teach us how to enjoy the foods that we love by making them healthier. >> you're about to blow our minds. always good to have you. >> that's a lot of pressure. thank you so much for having me. >> i'm excited about some of these swaps. how many times a week do we have to swap something out for it to be healthier? >> it's pretty simple. i want people to focus on one to two small changes or swaps a week. >> that's it? >> it's the new year. we're overwhelming ourselves trying to do it all when it comes to a healthy life and by february we've already given up right? small swaps allow for consistency. that's why i created it. i want this to be a lifestyle

that is enjoyable. >> one of the things that i think probably keeps a lot of folks when it comes from swapping, keeps them from doing it, the taste. if you swap something out it doesn't taste as good. >> the more healthy food you eat, the more you'll crave healthier food, you've got to give it some time, about a month of eating healthier food, your taste buds to change and adapt. >> taste buds change over time? >> correct, and i actually have a trick for that because i'm a nutritionist. i tell people to do two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a large water bottle and sip throughout the day. this reduces sugar cravings but also makes you crave healthier foods. it gets your taste buds adapting. >> vinegar water? >> yeah, apple cider vinegar. what are we going to start with here. >> we're doing a healthy apple or berry crumble. i know americans love their pie. >> we do. >> these are frozen berries. help me put these in there. >> i can do that. frozen or fresh, doesn't matter? >> doesn't matter. you can do peach, you can do whatever fruit you like.

>> i want to go back to something, i recognize everything else here. what is this? >> that's ground linseed, almond and sunflower meal, but you can do flaxseed meal as well. we're going to to toss this with a little bit of maple syrup. we're going to do cinnamon. i did lemon juice, maple syrup and a bit of cinnamon. you know with the diet culture we're so focused on the foods we have to remove and give up, but i want people to focus on the foods they can add to their plate. the crumble is made from oats so really healthy. not just oats, i'm going to do coconut flakes. aisle goi i'm going to do almonds, chia seeds. >> this is ground linseed, almond and sunflower meal. you can just do ground flaxseed to keep it simple. >> why do you like that? >> it's high in fiber and essential fatty acids. it keeps you really full. this crumble can be eaten for

breakfast it's that healthy. >> i thought it was breakfast. >> i'm going to do maple syrup and coconut oil and some cinnamon. this you'll see is going to turn into a crumble. >> and you just pour that -- >> i'm obsessed, i created j's healthy because i love making healthy version ofs people's favorite foods. you'll see this turns into a crumble like mixture that i'm going to top the berries with. basically then you bake it in the oven on 350 degrees fahrenheit for 30 minutes. it turns into a crumble. >> that's easy. >> you'll just top the berries with the crumble. i'll do that now. >> it tastes naughty, are you sure this is good for us? >> it's so good. >> that's really good. >> that is what i've become good at, creating healthy versions of people's favorite treats. i like to top the crumble with greek yogurt instead of ice cream. it's always good to have some cold ice cream. >> that is coconut yogurt. >> really quickly, trail mix, a

lot of people like trail mix. >> most of the snacks are high in refined sugar. it's high in essential fatty acids, higher in protein. these are mixed nuts, i'm going to add sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, some dark chocolate, coconut flakes, cinnamon. >> so there's enough naughty in there to make that good too. >> you'll see. this is the perfect snack to take when you're traveling, working, you can take it to school. i actually prepare it on a sunday, and then i have it in my fridge or pantry and i've got a snack ready to go for the week. i'm going to do a little bit of cranber cranberry. the problem with trail mixes is they're normally high in sugar because of the dried fruit. >> so you minimize the dried fruit. >> yes. we're going to mix this all together. >> this is a win. >> dark chocolate. >> your kids would love this. >> this is really good. the kids really do love the apple crumble and berry crumble. >> you can head over to one small thing on instagram for even more for easy healthy swaps and you can find today's recipes, plus a meal plan that jess has designed for all of us
