family is notified. here is where she died, right here where the van struck and killed her. they say she was in a crosswalk as she was crossing north 10th street in east santa clara as she was hit by a white van. the driver of that van kept going and police don't know who was behind the wheel. that's why police put up a placard asking for anyone who saw something around the midnight hour to report it. we expect police will be asking neighboring businesses, including a 7-eleven for surveillance video they may have in order to help identify who that trifr was. the woman who was killed is the third person to be killed by a driver in the city of san jose this year. again, if you know anything, you should call the san jose police. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, kris. 5:01. today marks the 34th day of the shutdown. president trump says there will be no state of the union address

"gathron. investigators say he left her near death after beating her during her morning walk. he stole her keys and burglarized her nearby home. he's linked to recent crimes including carjacking and two armed robberies. police say dna evidence and surveillance video helped track him down. >> for you commuters out there, a big question for you this morning. have you driven it yet? i'm talking about the new third lane in the eastbound direction of richmond-san rafael bridge. it's a hit with commuters. now north bay transportation leaders want to speed up plans for a third lane in the westbound direction. eastbound lane opened last year. the westbound lane is set to be this spring but only available for pedestrians and bicyclists. leaders will ask caltrans to look at opening that lane to cars during busy commute hours. depending what caltrans actually determines, a time line would have to be developed. well, the group save oakland

sports is among those leading the charge to make the proposed howard terminal stadium a reality for oakland a's. happening today they plan to meet at ricky's sports bar in san leandro. the a's top brass is supposed to attend. it's scheduled to gyp at 6:00 p.m. happening today former governor jerry brown moving quickly into his new role, that is to tell us how much closer we are to the apocalypse. we're not kidding here. if you're familiar with doomsday, 30 minutes to midnight scale, tracking how close we are to extinction. last fall he agreed to become chairman. today scientists will release their assessment and brown will deliver it. this month's storms are spelling relief for the state's reservoirs. according to the mercury news, the wet weather added 580 billion gallons of water. that's as much water as 9 million people use a year. all of the state's reservoirs are now at or above normal

levels. good thing there. >> even though we're taking a break from rain, it's not quite time to worry. it's pretty usual to see a week or two of dry weather in the middle of the winter of that's what we're seeing now. cool temperatures as you head out the door. live look outside at dublin, 580, everyone heading out. no issues of visibility. look at these temperatures. you do need to add on a couple of extra layers as you head to the dublin bart station. 39 at 6:00 and then we'll see those temperatures heading into the upper 50s. a pretty quick warm-up. if you're out the door to the fruitvale bart station, upper 50s in the afternoon. we'll talk about what else is going on. i think you have an update for tri-valley. >> i do. my view last final would have shown you a closure for 580. we see a smooth drive and no problems now, 680 just reopened

company." the key here is some groups. do they mean everybody has a new job or some people are losing their jobs? we don't know. speaking of self-driving cars, amazon showing off not a car but a self-driving robot that's delivering goods to people in washington. it's called scout. the video doesn't show it but amazon sends somebody to walk right behind it to make sure it knows where it's going. we've been telling you how ftc will be cracking down on facebook, probably with a fine. a group calling on washington to break it up or fine mark zuckerberg, not the company. it would come from the problems with cambridge analytica. a quick word about twitter. it has problems. either been slow cracking down on violent speech, particularly surrounding the boys in washington, the ones from kentucky, but it's amazing how much of the world's news starts

fries. >> kentucky fried burgers. >> sounds gross. >> cross over. >> burgers are already fried. >> those are flame broiled, then they could fry it. wow. >> too much fast-food. >> come on, where is the healthy. >> let's just get a live look outside at the golden gate bridge as you head outside. i want to talk about the water and how we're doing with all the rain measured. we talked about the reservoir but as far as rainfall and where we are typically at this point, we are still lacking just a little bit but we are doing much better than we were earlier in the season. we're looking at those numbers anywhere from 84% of normal in san jose mountain, only 67% of normal and then santa rosa closer to average at 91% of normal. when we get up to 100%, that's where we should be. so in some spots we are really lacking on that rain. we do have more dry weather on

the way. then as we look at our visibility this morning as you get ready to head out on this thursday, in santa rosa, three-quarter mile visibility. elsewhere it is mostly clear. as you head out walnut creek, clear and cool. low 40s at 7:00. 54 will be the temperature at 10:00. then at 1:00, we're at 60 degrees. nice progression there as you start out and get your hair ready for the day. it's another good hair day, even though the humidity is at 86%. that's relative. when those temperatures are cold, it doesn't really feel that humid outside. so fairly crisp out there and our humidity drops as we go into the afternoon as our temperatures head into the low- to mid-60s today all across the bay area. no storms developing out there in the pacific, although i've seen an increase in cloud cover that will go up and over our high pressure, which is keeping us dry. we will see an increase in cloud cover into the weekend but still no rain. temperatures today heading into

the low 60s for the inland valleys, upper 60s for the next several days. it is going to feel very nice and spring-like. in fact, in some spots running close to 10 degrees above normal. that continues at least to the start of next week. as you head to mike, you've been tracking the roads and personal what's happening in the tri-valley. >> that's right. the tri-valley had closures in northbound direction that cleared up. 680 moves smoothly. an earlier crash but it's cleared as well. east 580 away from the bay bridge but around 35th, a report of furniture busted up in the roadway and scattered across eastbound direction. again, getting away from the maze and heading to the merge with the freeway. just note that. see a little slowing over here at the toll plaza. the build is happening. we should see metering lights on in a few minutes. no delays for the rails on the

she's got more on who police are looking for. >> hi, laura an marcus, police don't have a good idea. they put up a placard where the woman was hit asking for someone who saw something in the mid knit hour to call it in. this is the intersection where that woman died after that driver hit her and just kept going. san jose police say that woman was in the crosswalk here at north 10th street at east santa clara when she was hit by a white van. that driver kept going and police don't yet know who was behind the wheel. again, police are asking for any information, anyone who saw something around the midnight hour to report it. we also expect police will be asking neighbors businesses including a 7-eleven video for surveillance video they may have. that woman who died here this morning right around the midnight hour is the third person to die because they were hit by a car in the city of san jose this year. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay."

thank you, kris. 5:31. a new video just in overnight as protesters take to the streets of venezuela. now, this is foot acknowledge of police firing tear gas. the leader of the national assembly declared himself president of the south american country yesterday. news comes after years of crisis in venezuela. and president donald trump is backing him. many have opposed the president. the president's announcement of support against that regime is welcomed news for lots of people here. >> democracy recognizes a democratic leader in another country, it's like a seal of approval. >> now, new this morning, republican senator marco rubio tweeted he plans on working to get congressional support for

humanitarian aid for people of venezuela. planning to send a message to oakland school leaders, keep their schools open. they are organizing a news conference on the heels of a rally that turned into a protest last night in front of the school pord. parents, students, teachers held banners and signs opposing the closure of roots academy. the district says there's too many public schools and fewer students than it once did. the board plans to vote on the closure next week. a big loss for schools in santa clara county. the assessment appeals board cut the value of levi's stadium to the san francisco 49ers in half. that means the team will be assessed during the season. the stadium comes from events from other events. $36 million has to be refunded from the county. the school district will have to shell out $13 million of that money. the district will lose out on $2 million every year going forward. it promises no programs will be cut. 5:33.

do you need a reason to carpool spot peninsula? a new program in san mateo county is being introduced later today to get more commuters to ride with others. "today in the bay" pete suratos has been asking questions about the new concept. he's live in south san francisco with what he found out. good morning, pete. >> good morning, marcus. first for people who work in san mateo county or live in san mateo county. if you decide to carpool, you'll be eligible for incentives in the form of e gift cards. we'll get to that in a moment. here is how it will work. first, the law is carpool 2.0, put together by san mateo county and bay area air district. they are the ones behind the program. overall goal with car-pooling, traffic congestion, emissions and provide more parking in the county if more people are car-pooling. the county is going to track carpoolers through its star

commuter track out. basically drivers input their information on the number of carpool rides taking into san mateo county or leaving san mateo county. in return they are going to receive incentives in the form of e gift cards for things like restaurants, just a couple of options. we spoke to a couple of drivers in south san francisco about the traffic issues coming into san mateo county. if these incentives, these e gift cards make it worth it to carpool at all? >> part time, i work in the city, it's really hard, really hard to get parking. >> ideas are cool. one offs are just one offs. so if i carpool for the whole month you're going to give me a gift card every day? or are you going to give me a gift card today and say carpool for the rest of the month. >> reporter: mixed opinions on

munchery. the owners say they are owed a lot of dough. i'm not talking about the dough they cook with but $20,000. >> $20,000 is a full payroll for us. it's half my annual salary. it's the money we had been saving to make improvements, buy equipment, so it is pretty devastating. >> the owners say the only reason they learned munchery was closing was because of an e-mail palace out to customers. munchery not talking about the money it owes vendors and food suppliers. next time you're driving through the central valley, don't mistake the guy selling jewelry on the side of the road for a zale's. that's the warning from child molestation. the scam is simple. people parking on county rides are flagging down motorists and say they need gas or whatever reason but in exchange they offer jewelry. most is branded 18 karat with a

moving smoothly you can see a crash blocking slow lane. a big rig moving part of the vehicles off the road, blocking the trailers. that's the property with san mateo. north to bay bridge, metering lights, not a problem there. over there richmond to san rafael. cruising to the week, too. that's nice. should be a good one. >> kari calls it friday eve. >> yeah. it's going to be a great weekend, looking at sunshine and warmer weather as well. here is a look at the saturday forecast across the bay area reaching into the mid and upper 60s for the inland valleys. but that's after a cool start. put that in the plans it will warm up and cool down quickly. we're looking at for our coastal temperatures some low 60s. as you make plans, maybe you'll want to check out chinese new year's extravaganza. that's happening in san mateo at hillsdale shopping center. as we enjoy that event, it's going to be in the low 60s. comfortable temperatures.

also oakland a's fanfest happening in jack london square will start out cool with upper 40s and low 50s. then we'll get low 50s the rest of the day. heading out of town to squaw valley, good for travel, there and back, dry road conditions, mostly sunny skies for tomorrow with highs in the mid-40s, up to 50 on sunday. some of that snow will be melting. i haven't shown a lot of muir woods forecast. i know because of the government shutdown they don't have a lot of facilities open. just be mindful of that if you will be going the park may be open and you may not have access. temperatures will reach into the low 60s so it's going to be very comfortable out there. paso robles will be nice and warm with sunshine all throughout the weekend. just a few more clouds moving in on saturday. we'll talk about what's going on today in our forecast. that's coming up in about three minutes. >> thanks, kari. 5:41 right now. coming up, it is a famous

called it a blotch on the country. the president says he will not seek an alternative venue, which he could do because of the historic importance of addressing congress. meanwhile mitch mcconnell will allow votes in the senate aimed at ending the shutdown. he's absolutely prohibited them up until now. the house voted on quite a few solutions. none were allowed in the senate. the democrats are going to offer a senate bill today to reopen the government temporarily until early february, funding departments, rather, that had been closed but no money for the wall. the republicans are going to offer a bill that does fund the wall and extends some protection for immigrants. this is the idea president trump raised on saturday. there is no chance either of these are going to pass. but when you've got two sides, you've got room for compromise. the head of the coast guard speaking out blasting the fact coast guard sailors and others aren't getting paid.
