long. first a mid flight death. a flight diverted to sfo overnight. the passengers still stuck here now. what we know about what happened. "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you. it's friday. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at your commute in a bit. first, we want to start out with temperatures outside. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that for us. >> it's cold once again. we start out with 30s and 40s across the bay area, and it's going to warm up, as we go into the afternoon. here is a live look in fremont, 880 is all clear. we're not looking at any fog as far as the visibility. we're going to see sunshine, warming our temperatures from the low 40s to the low 60s today, and all the bay area microclimates looking at some 60s today. it's going to feel very much like spring. we'll talk about what's ahead in our forecast coming up, and mike, you're getting us out there with a look at what's happening in san jose. >> we'll start with our camera
6:01 am
here for 101, where i saw a little bit of slowing, as you head up north of 680 in toward alum rock avenue and that's where we had an earlier crash reported. it looks like that traffic on a live shot just cleared up, so they may have cleared that crash from the lanes as well. i'll double check. so far, silicon valley and the rest of the bay showing you your friday commute, which means a little bit later start and a lot lighter early on. 6:01 right now, no major problems or slowing. we have the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. i go's thuess that is major flo but not unexpected. this approach on the left is a little bit lighter. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. right now, we are following breaking news for you. fbi arrests roger stone. he was president trump's former campaign adviser. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live for us in washington, d.c., with more on this investigation. a big surprise early this morning, tracie. >> well, it's a big surprise, and it's really a big deal. roger stone, the former trump campaign adviser and even after
6:02 am
he was off the payroll, very close with president trump, and the campaign, accused of colluding with wikileaks while wikileaks was released emails hacked by russians, emails that were damaging to hillary clinton's campaign. let's be clear, he is not accused of colluding with russia. he is accused of making false statements to the house intelligence committee about whether or not he was in touch with wikileaks, that was releasing those emails. this happened this morning. the arrest in florida, and we're hearing from the former cia director about just how important that email hack was in the final months of the campaign. >> in the summer of 2016 we were watching what was happening in terms of what was released by wikileaks and how the russian hand was behind this so the intermediaries was something looked at very closely by the fbi and others, so again, this indictment is not surprising in
6:03 am
any respect. >> first of all, i want to give you an opportunity -- >> robert mueller of the russia investigation, it includes seven specific counts, obstruction, witness tampering and five counts of making false statements regarding his statements to the house intelligence committee. keep in mind that stone has repeatedly denied any collusion. he said at one point he would never testify against president trump. he is making an appearance in federal court in just a couple of hours. back to you. >> we'll be watching for that one. tracie potts in washington, thank you, tracie. >> it is 6:03 right now. more breaking news, tsa agents will soon get a partial paycheck. this comes amid day 35 of the government shutdown. the agency's administrator just tweeted out the news saying "tsa employee. s who worked in an exempted status during pay period 26 will get a check." some hawaiian airlines
6:04 am
passengers bound for new york got an unexpected stop at san francisco international, this after a medical emergency in the air. it's a story that happened while you were sleeping. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from sfo with more on what happened. kris? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, laura and marcus. hawaiian airlines is confirming it was a flight attendant who died on that flight from honolulu to jfk, but that's what sources are telling our nbc affiliate in honolulu this morning. we were here as that plane that was diverted, hawaiian airlines flight 50 finally took off again from sfo bound for jfk in new york, just before 5:00 this morning. that plane left honolulu at 4:20 yesterday afternoon, and at 6:20 our time, and due to land this morning in new york. that didn't happen because sometime around 1:00 in the morning the flight was diverted to sfo. one passenger tweeted flight attendants made an announcement calling for any doctor on board to help. the passenger tweeted "it's been
6:05 am
a long time since they asked for doctors to come to first class, so i hope they're okay." once medics boarded that plane, she tweeted "there are cops, too, and no one is moving with any urgency." we got the tail number of that plane to track it real time as it makes its way to jfk. it is now over utah. if you're wondering how common medical emergencies in flight are, the latest statistics i could find date back a couple of years. according to a "new england journal of medicine" survey, there's one medical emergency in flight for every 604 flights so they're not as uncommon as you think but certainly nothing as serious as what happened here. in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. 6:05 right now. in just a few hours, the travis air force base doctor convicted of sexually assaulting three of his patients was found guilty on multiple charges following a six-week trial. he's going to appear in court.
6:06 am
he gained trust of his victims all military veterans and got them to perform sex acts using what he called exposure therapy. two of those victims were looking for treatment for ptsd. >> 6:05 and new this morning, a bay area burmese restaurant chain is set to pay a multimillion-dollar settlement in a state wage theft investigation. the agreement includes present and former workers at burma ruby and palo alto and rangoon ruby restaurants in palo alto, san francisco, san carlos, burlingame and belmont. the belmont restaurant recently closed. in total 380 work eers will spl up about $4 million. the restaurant owners issue ude a statement saying "the settlement was a compromise and was reach out any admission of liability." happening today, the golden gate bridge district will be discussing a crash involving one of its boats, and how to move forward with making repairs. you might even remember this one. it happened back in november, when a ferry crashed into a
6:07 am
dock at the ferry building, left a big hole in the side of the boat. two of 53 people on board were hurt. still not clear what caused that crash. and right now as we come up on 6:07, it's a clear start, live look outside in san jose, feels really chilly out there, and we've had some low visibility in spots. we're down to about a quarter mile visibility in parts of the north bay, with some of our temperatures that have been in the upper 30s and low 40s. so as you get up and get the kids out the door for school this morning in concord, expect it to be at about 40 degrees and then going to see those temperatures making it into the low 60s for today, after this chilly start. all that sunshine helps warm us up and it will be a very nice day. we will continue to see more weather like this, although we will see an increase in cloud cover going into the weekend. so i'll be tracking that, and the rest of the forecast coming up, and mike, you have a fairly pleasant start to the commute. >> very nice as far as the map behind me right now. basically from silicon valley
6:08 am
all the way up toward oakland, san francisco, a nice easy drive. you'd expect that on a friday, a little bit later start but we have the metering lights on at the bay bridge. south county i want to point out a couple things. we have slowing north 101 out of san martin but the earlier boxes or whatever they were in the lanes at cochran cleared from morgan hill and southbound 17 we have reports of one lane that may be blocked by some debris, headed down toward scotts valley. no slowing on the sensors, take note if that's where you're headed over the next few. over toward the bay bridge an easy drive, the times show you just 17 minutes from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge, that's a great drive down the east shore freeway. back to you. >> all right, thank you, mike. it is 6:08 right now. still ahead on "today in the bay," imagine booking some seats for your family to take a flight, but then you wind up with nearly 100 reservations. the mistake that was made and how our consumer team stepped in to help. intel has a big job opening and facebook is on the defensive this hour.

camera. it is 17 degrees, and we are going to have some great travel conditions. it's going to warm up to the mid-40s in squaw valley and alpine meadows. we have 125 inches of snow at the base of the mountain. we'll talk about what's going on here around the bay area for the weekend, coming up in less than five minutes. and if that's where you're going, maybe eastbound 580 is where you're headed, watch out. the slowing starts early this afternoon, with the tail lights off of the dublin grade at the top. westbound is your commute now, that's looking slower out of the altamont, nothing dramatic. we'll track your commute. good morning to you, and happy friday. markets did okay thursday, considering the commerce secretary said we're "miles and miles" away from a deal with china. we're getting movement in washington on solving the shutdown as well that may help markets today. we thought intel would announce a new ceo yesterday it didn't. the interim says he doesn't want

the job. let's talk about facebook first. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg wrote an op-ed in the "wall street journal" which he said people assume things we do that we don't do. for example, we don't sell people's data, even though it's often reported that we do. facebook is on the cusp we think of a massive fine from the ftc. it's sort of been on a long-term apology tour as well after a whole year of scandals in 2018, including the biggest with cambridge analytica. facebook said it would crack down on fake news. it often announces something, way to ver diversity reports, new initiatives when it's in a cycle. it's been proven over and over companies make more money and perform better in the stock market if they have women on the board, but should you legislate that? we're going to debate that issue this sunday morning on
6:14 am
"press:here" that comes up at 9:00 after "meet the press." obviously it's the right thing for companies to do but should you force the free market to do what's good for them, right? if you require women on the board, why stop there? i put that question to the head of the women's corporate board directors association. we absolutely have established women on boards make companies better. would a minority on a board make a company better? >> absolutely. >> should we legislate that, require there be a minority on the board? >> i think that may be the next step. >> would a veteran on the board make a company better? >> yes. >> should we legislate that? >> this is a hard answer, okay, because legislating anything doesn't sit well in america. >> thea schwabacher is a personal friend so it's great to argue a point with somebody like that. >> we do it all the time. >> there are no hard feelings. i'm just trying to understand, is this the right thing to do. i fully support it. i think it's a great idea, obviously women, minorities. >> it's diversity i think.
6:15 am
it's more reflective of who we are. >> but do you make it a law? >> that is a tough one. >> it's tough and we'll talk about it this sunday morning. >> looking forward to that. >> looking forward to that. in south texas, strong winds knocking down a spacex rocket. ceo elon musk tweeting it will take weeks to repair the damage. 50-mile-per-hour winds broke the mooring blocks yesterday afternoon. the rocket is a test version of starship, which spacex is building to transport humans and cargo to mars. something that makes a lot of people happy, beer. two words got a lot of people's attention, free beer. one australian pub is holding true to its free beer promise which it made to customers as the summer temperatures sky rocketed this week. the pub said it would pick up the tab if temperatures went over 113 degrees. the thermometer in there yesterday hit 115.
6:16 am
a little beer cheer there can be nice for a lot of people, but people everywhere are feeling that heat. >> like i just sweated my entire body weight out. >> i tried to drink water from the water fountain so it's boiling, pretty hot. >> the temperatures yesterday in adelaide broke an 80-year record. >> that is hot. i hope it was ice cold beer. i went to phoenix for a short time and this is why. one summer it was 121. i was doing a live shot outside. >> you said your shoes were sinking into the tarmac. >> my heels into the tarmac out there. >> wow. >> 110. >> it's pretty wicked hot. it's like being in an oven. >> and it's hard to imagine right now they're in the middle of summer, while we're in the middle of winter. but hey, that's what's going on. we are really enjoying some nice weather for the bay area. it does start out cool, but by this afternoon, it will be a distant memory. here is a live look in dublin.
6:17 am
a lot of people up and out the door. we've seen patches of fog but none in the tri valley. as we start out this morning, it's cold. 37 degrees, but a lot of sunshine, allows temperatures to warm up fast. we'll be in the low 60s by early afternoon, and as you're getting ready, the frizz factor is low. we are going to have some great conditions for styling your hair and keeping it smooth today, because that humidity stays low today, and not much of a wind. so as we look at what to expect as we go throughout the day, our high in santa rosa reaches 66 degrees. oakland 64, also 64 in palo alto. morgan hill we're going to see a high of 67 degrees. it is all clear, and we are starting to see some clouds moving in from the south, but this will not bring us any rain. just give us a little bit of filtered sunshine for the weekend, and that's what we can expect into next week. i wanted to give you an update on our drought status, because this is just released yesterday morning, and it shows that parts of the central sierra has been taken out of a drought.
6:18 am
while we do still have the yellow category, the abnormally dry for parts of the central valley, into the bay area, and then we look at the south bay, and parts of the north bay, we are still in a moderate drought, as we could use some more rain, but as you could see, there's none of that in this seven-day forecast. we're reaching up to 66 today for some of our inland valleys and slightly warmer, going into the weekend, despite the cloud cover that we'll see, it will be breezy, starting out and some milder mornings, looking at san francisco, mostly staying in the 60s over the next seven days. and mike, you're getting us out there on the road with a look at the bridges. >> the bridges are the popular connector, obviously, the only way you can drive across or over the water, i should say. those are the critical factors from the east bay to the peninsula, your commute direction. it's so the lighter commute continues. the dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridges westbound is your commute just a little bit of
6:19 am
slowing as you approach the toll plaza, no problem and the nimitz freeway shows a smooth flow of traffic as well. up toward the bay bridge and the richmond to san rafael bridge, both of those westbound pushes are fine, but we do have the backup over at the bay bridge toll plaza. contra costa county is just fine. look at this, this is not far from pixar, we have our animated cars here. there is no lightning flow, it's still slow but no need for metering. that is the virtual look. here is the real look. the left approach is lighter coming out of the maze, and that's the pattern that we expect, just after 7:00, we'll see all the lanes really start to pack in, folks head into the office a little bit later on a friday but still do commute. that late morning commute will be the one on friday and early afternoon, as folks make a getaway, a smooth drive and smooth ride for all of these transit agencies reported, no delays over the water for the ferry systems either, and here is the north bay, southbound 101 picks up the volume but no major delays. this is san rafael, but you're fine novato to the going going.
6:20 am
>> that was a fun animated traffic thing. looking for lightning mcqueen there. thanks, mike. we've all talked about keeping san francisco clean. coming up at 6:30, the new steps the city is taking specifically when it comes to bathrooms. he books four airline tickets for the family, but winds up with almost 100 reservations. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. 6:22 for you on this friday morning. nbc bay area responds to a union city man's travel problems. >> he booked four airline tickets but ended up with dozens by mistake. he asked consumer investigator chris chmura's team for help. >> ray ruelos booked a simple spring trip for his family of four. turns out the travel agency charged him repeatedly for the four tickets. ray wound up with 96 different reservations, enough to occupy a third of all the seats on an international airliner. you needed four tickets but you got 96. >> that's correct. >> reporter: could you even fill up 96 seats with your friends and family? >> no. >> it's silly but ray was on the hook for serious money, more than $50,000. he said he tried to point out what he thought was obvious, the charges were duplicate, and yet over a two-month span, he wasn't able to get a full refund. so he called us.
6:24 am
we looked into how one family could wind up with 96 airline tickets. we asked why no one flagged the repetitive reservations, and well, we of course, took action to get ray his money back. we'll show you what happened tonight at 11:00. if you have a consumer complaint, let us know, 888-996-tips or go to nbcbayarea.com/responds. i'll see you again tonight at 11:00. >> thanks, chris. 6:24 right now. new for you this morning, a central indiana school superintendent is facing fraud charges for using her insurance to help a sick student. according to court documents, casey smitherman took her 15-year-old student to a clinic after the student became sick and didn't show up for school. police said smitherman used her insurance information to check the student in under her son's name. she also used her insurance to pay for an antibiotic prescription for the teen. the community and school are standing behind her. >> the lady tried to help a young man that needed help and

hours, and then it's going to warm up. we'll be at 56 degrees by early afternoon. looking at all of our microclimates, expect those highs up to about 66 in san jose, and 64 in antioch. we'll take a look at the weekend forecast in just a few minutes, and mike, dublin is looking busy. >> it looks busy but it's not out of control busy. it's actually well under control. traffic flowing close to the limit here, approaching the dublin interchange, west up the dublin grade, over toward 238, castro valley area, that's where we're looking at that section right there. the slowing only shows up over here in high ward, south 808, san mateo bridge, dumbarton bridge the build gentle and slow right now. we'll see things really start to kick in at about 7:00, 7:15, when a lot of folks tend to hit the roadways. i think friday is a popular day for our show. the south bay shows a nice drive northbound, a little build through san jose and getting toward the bay bridge just now, we've gone from green to yellow, 20 minutes from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge toll
