microclimate forecast. we were talking about how gorgeous yesterday was. you said today will be similar. >> we will get another beautiful day. i was down near the cesar chavez plaza where they have the pucks set up, it was such a cool setup. it was awesome to see everyone out there. you'll have a chance to check that out. look how beautiful this sunrise is in san francisco. 51 degrees. it is not in the 50s everywhere. 36 degrees. palo alto, 39. san santa cruz, 38. 42 for san jose. temperatures, you'll notice, will be running warmer this morning in napa especially. about 8 degrees. everywhere else the temperature change is not as noticeable. but it will be into the afternoon. it will be a great day to go outside. we have an increase in high clouds.

i'll be back again in about 15 minutes to break it all down for you. >> we look forward to that. see you then. new this morning, police need your help finding the shooter who killed a man just blocks from san jose state's campus. it happened before 2:00 this morning at south 10th and east william streets. when officers responded, they found the man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital where he died. bystanders tell us they heard two gunshots and saw people running. one witness tells us he saw a man in a red-hooded sweatshirt escape in a honda accord. >> the car was parked here. the guy came out, confirmed the guy was down. then he dipped. >> the motive for the shooter is under investigation. the identity of the victim will be released by the coroner's office after they notify his next of kin. the government shutdown officially is over, but federal workers here in the bay area still are feeling the pinch. they're waiting to see paychecks

for one month of unpaid work. and they're standing by to see if another shutdown is looming. that's because the deal to reopen the government is for three weeks, leaving a lot of people facing an uncertain futur future. >> can goods over here. >> despite the deal, the future is still uncertain. nicole is picking up groceries for her family at a food pantry for active duty coast guard personnel in alameda, something she'll do till her husband is paid. >> i think that's why everybody's so grateful that this is remaining open for us until those paychecks do come, because it allows you to come in, grab the items that you may need, and not have to worry about going to a grocery store. >> reporter: federal workers missed two paychecks during the government shutdown. today was day 35, the day president trump signed a deal to end the stalemate. >> i am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government. >> reporter: but the deal only

stanford track team. this is actually in seattle where their charter bus caught fire on interstate 5. as firefighters doused the flames and cleaned away the freeway, you can see the team waited on the shoulder for two hours, and still had to go to their competition by metro bus. >> people started to run because then the flames got big. we were afraid the bus would blow up. >> some kids on there, nervous about the meet. then this happens, you realize there's much bigger things in life. >> incredibly the stanford team escaped unharmed and met as usual yesterday. parents are waking up to the news that a well known track coach is under arrest for sexual assault. this is gregory marshall. he is in the santa clara county jail accused of sexually assaulting two teenage girls.

the investigation dates back to 2004 when he was a teacher at valley christian high school. the assaults reportedly happened inside a classroom. parents we spoke with are stunned. >> total shock. they have a big concert today. now we hear this. it's mind blowing. >> marshall is employed in the campbell union high school district which released a statement acknowledging that he successfully complete a background check. although there are no known allegations regarding campbell union high school district students, we have and will continue to fully cooperate with the san jose police department during the course of this investigation. he was on the run for nearly a year, now we know where a bay area chiropractor accused of sexual battery was hiding. darius bunyard was accused of treating patients and employees inappropriately at his practice. he was supposed to hear the jury's verdict last march but he never showed up.

instead he fled to playa del carmen. he made the america's most wanted list. someone in mexico turned him in and he's in custody at l.a. county jail. three people were arrested yesterday after this chase ended with a crash in oakland. police say they originally recognized the car which was wanted in connect shun with a homicide in vallejo. officers followed the driver who took off. it ended three miles from the coliseum. a lot to take in over the last 24 hours, that's the reaction from santa rosa's mayor after cal fire released the cause of the 2017 tubbs fire. the report determined that the fire was caused by privately owned electrical equipment and not pg&e lines. the fire killed 22 and destroyed over 3,000 homes. the mayor says healing and rebuilding remain priority number one. as for the lawsuit against the utility, that's still a go. >> the city of santa rosa's litigation with pg&e is

continuing and we are committed to that effort because we believe it is in the best interests of the community of santa rosa to continue to do so. >> city council will meet tuesday in closed session to discuss that lawsuit. roger stone was arrested at his home yesterday morning, now there's reaction pouring in from washington. in a statement, speaker nancy pelosi said the indictment roger stone makes clear that there was a deliberate coordinated attempt by top trump campaign officials to influence the 2016 election. the fbi arrested stone at his home in florida early yesterday morning. he faces seven charges including obstruction, false statements and witness tampering. they all stem from his alleged connection to wikileaks and hacked democratic party e-mails. stone is vowing never to testify against the president. it is 7:07. much more ahead on "today in the

state senator kamala harris in columbia, south carolina last night speaking to members of her sorority. she was there helping her sisters raise scholarship money and to begin campaigning for president as she looks for voters. >> good evening! >> reporter: as california senator kamala harris takes the stage at the pink gala in columbia, south carolina, she's not just addressing a room full of sorority sisters. >> i think our founders gave us the right charge. they said, stand together, take care of each other, and serve your country as leaders. >> nbc political analyst larry gerston says harry has picked addresses in baltimore, maryland, oakland, and columbia for good reasons. >> it doesn't hurt to go to south carolina. why? that's the third spot on the primary tour. it's also the spot of the three where there are the most african-americans. so she would do well to gain a

walnut creek welcome back on your saturday morning. it is january 26th. here's a live look outside at our brand-new camera in walnut creek. looks like a little cloud and fog cover there. we have a gorgeous day ahead. if you loved yesterday, today will be much the same. now to this mural depicteding diversity and inclusion. it was supposed to be unveiled today, but that's on hold. students from novato high school painted it for the margaret todd senior center. the woman who commissioned the artwork wanted the piece to better represent novato, and asked the lead artist to make some changes.

the request, add more light-skinned people. >> i've heard that brown faces have been painted over to make them white and that there's light-skipped people have been painted to be lighter. >> the woman who commissioned the changes wants to meet with the student artists and find a way to finish the mural in a way that's respectful to everyone. book lovers said good-bye to a san francisco landmark. after 40 years, aardvark books closed in the castro. yesterday was the last day that many of the normally crammed book shelves were empty. it was a popular fixture in the castro. customers were stopping in to say good-bye ever since they learned the building had been sold. books that go unsold will be

donated to non-profit organizations. you might have seen it here. america has a new figure skating star. she is from the east bay. 13-year-old alycia liu stole the show. last night in detroit she became the youngest figure skating champion in u.s. history. she's only 13. her family lives in richmond and she trains in oakland. her story as remarkable as her performance. she's the oldest of five children raised by a single father. we will likely be seeing her in the 2022 olympics in beijing, which means she would follow in the footsteps of other stars like christy yamaguchi and peggy fleming. she can't qualify for the next olympics because she's too young. what a talent. from the bitter cold of the ice rink to the gorgeous weather we're seeing outside. let's check in with vianey arana with a check of the forecast. yesterday was gorgeous. >> it was.

here's what we're monitoring now. not monitoring rain, but satellite radar showcasing an increase in those high clouds. if i take this in closer, you will notice we are noticing high clouds, that's all thanks to a ridge of high pressure. so it could keep the coastline a little cloudier. but at least we're going to be mild with our temperatures. it will be very comfortable into the afternoon. look at the temperatures. topping out into the upper 60s for san jose. 66 degrees. cupertino, 67. gilroy, 68. in the east bay, 60s for concord. oakland, 64. along the peninsula, this is where we might see more cloud cover into the afternoon. but we have not seen any fog. 65 for redwood city. san mateo, 63. heading into san francisco, 63. novato at 65. so it's going to be a fantastic day overall.

over the next couple of days, here's what we got going on. high clouds. we might notice an increase in cloud cover into tomorrow. it will still be dry. temperatures will still be rather warm in the city. 64 degrees in through monday and tuesday. those high clouds clear out nicely. we start our work week strong in terms of warm weather. 61 degrees. by wednesday we're monitoring this system that might trickle in some rain. there is a slight chance of seeing some showers into wednesday night and thursday. then some rain chances will continue into friday. as far as those inland temperatures, again we'll be in those upper 60s for tomorrow. clouds will linger. we are also monitoring the effects of that storm i was mentioning. for now we'll have a great start to sunday as well and also into the work week. go outside and enjoy the sunshine. >> perfect weather for the

lives forever impacted by the recent wildfires to hit the bay area. welcome back. we've seen thousand of lives forever impacted by the wildfires to hit the bay area, through the tragedy we find unique stories, including this one. garvin thomas shares with us what one man is doing after losing his children and all his belongings in this morning's "bay area proud." >> you may remember this sheriff's deputy's body cam footage released in the days after the 2017 tubbs fire in santa rosa. living in that house was a man named lowell bryant. the house burned to the ground. it was the latest of a string of tragedies that struck him. while he's down, he's definitely

not out. in coffee park these days, the sound of recovery is everywhere. the steady beat. listen closely, though, and you'll also hear the sounds of a life, not just being rebuilt. >> i got polish. >> reporter: but saved. >> in a minute i'll have kielbasa. >> reporter: that's what lowell bryant says this hot dog cart is doing for him. >> oh, yeah, without a doubt. there's no doubt about it. >> reporter: in october 2017, like so many others, lowell's home burned to the ground. what's worse, lowell had barely recovered from the deaths of two of his children. >> and then the damn fire. out of nowhere, and here i go again. everything. my kids ashes, everything i owned. four years of contractor tools, everything you could lose, i lost. >> reporter: lowell landed in a fema trailer, and there he sat. months passed, and he barely left it.

>> and i just was depressed. gained 50 pounds. it wasn't good. >> reporter: lowell knew he needed to do something and remembered helping a friend out with a hot dog cart years ago. >> that was two regulars, right? >> reporter: he put what money he had into edna's hot dogs, named for his mom. the plan was to come to coffey park three days a week to feed construction workers. but then his daughter posted his story to a fire survivor's facebook page and things took off. other survivors now going out of their way to help lowell get back on his feet. >> i was a fire survivor in calistoga, so we wanted to check it out. >> we lost our home, there was so much outpouring from the community. it was amazing. so you give back. >> this is the best of humanity. what's happening here is how we should be. this is how people can be to each other.

that's where the nhl all-star game will be happening tonight. it will be gorgeous weather to get out and enjoy the day. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has the microclimate forecast. there will be sunshine. >> there will be a few clouds here and there, but at least it will be dry. look at your all-star game forecast. a combination of sun and clouds. temperatures in the 60s. topping out into the upper 60s this afternoon. it will be beautiful to head outside. yesterday i saw the most adorable thing. a little boy dressed up in full gear with these little roller skates on. he was playing hockey by himself and dad was encouraging him. that will be great to see.

the two wrote a letter to the airline ceo regarding that controversial flight two weeks ago. you may recall the plane was on its way to san francisco from guadalajara. the fog forced it to divert to oakland and the plane sat on the tarmac for four hours trapping passengers inside. the letter says "no airline passengers should ever be made to endure this kind of ordeal and we hope you can provide us with some answers." aeromexico has yet to comment. a south bay police union is reacting to our exclusive report about an apparent glitch in a court's computer system that may be putting officers in the field at risk. the new santa clara court system called odyssey is not updating information about outstanding wants with more than 2,000 warrants missing. two police unions bralasted superior court officials

yesterday. they say when they pull somebody over for a violation, they have no way of knowing if that driver is wanted for a violent crime. >> we don't know if the person believes it is better to shoot at a cop rather than go to jail. and we're not going to go if we're letting go a killer. the system is broken. and it needs to be fixed now. >> santa clara county superior court released a statement today saying the odyssey computer system is working properly and they say they're experiencing essentially growing pains from moving from a 40-year program to modern software. you wouldn't believe this next story without this video. a fit of road rage in boston escalating to the point of this. one man holding on to the windshield of another man's suv as that man speeds away. the driver reaching up to 70 miles an hour. the other guy just holding on to the windshield. this because the two were caught up in a minor sideswipe. it gets even wilder. a good samaritan intervened and

stopped the situation. not just with his car, but with a gun. holding the two at bay until the police arrived. both the driver and the guy on the hood both arrested. could it really work? the a's want to build a gondola for their new ballpark. it would look like the one at oakland zoo. if you've seen it. here it is. it would link downtown oakland to the ballpark. according to the bay area economic council, it would generate nearly $700 million to the city's economy in the first ten years. the system would provide more than a million rides a year to both fans and commuters. the gondola and ballpark, if built, are expected to open in about four years. still ahead on "today in the bay," the nhl's gal laaxy of st were on display at the shark tank. we get a look at the skills challenge next.

the planet. the nhl all-star game festivites are in full welcome back. san jose rolled out the red carpet for the best players on the planet. the nhl all-star game festivities are in full swing. a sold-out crowd came to see the stars shining last night. the all-star game is tonight, right here on nbc bay area at 5:00. the party and the skills competitions were last night. there was a lot of teal. >> the red carpet was fun for the guys, but the fun factor went up once they hit the ice. as you would expect, a rousing round of applause for the sharks. individual skills, premiere passer is tough. erik karlsson went first. a time of 1:58. good for seventh out of eight. hardest shot competition, brent burns missed his first, 100.6 miles an hour on the second to finish second. in the final event, shooting accuracy, this was joe pavelski's event.

it is 7:43. how is that for a saturday morning start. golden gate bridge, clear view there. no fog to worry about. this is our tower shot. i tweeted out a magnificent photo of the sunrise. beautiful pink skies this morning. santa rosa at 37. nap ta napa, 46. oakland in the 40s. hayward also in the 40s. we will be warming up. this is probably the chilliest we'll be. if you're heading out, let me talk about what's going on. satellite radar, you can see we are starting to notice high clouds rolling in. that's exactly what will happen within the next supple of hours. clouds will increase by the afternoon. at least it will be dry. what will happen, we'll get a combination of sun and clouds. we have this high pressure

system keeping us nice and dry. temperatures mild but slightly above normal. overall we'll thank this hoop f high pressure for this fantastic weather. it will be cloudier along the coast. inland should be okay. san francisco topping out at about 63. oakland 66. san jose, 66. morgan hill, 69. warmer in concord, 68 degrees. how is that for january weather? heading towards the afternoon, we will notice a dip in the overnight lows. it won't be as cold as lake tahoe. it is beautiful to head up there this weekend. if you were not able to do that last weekend or the weekend before, this will be a fantastic weekend to do so. they still have some snow up there. at least the travel conditions will be great. you will get some beautiful sights like this one using our weather underground camera. if you're going to be enjoying the nhl all-star game

festivities going on down in san jose, this is what in store for you this afternoon. so many people walking around with hockey jerseys. 65 degrees by 2:00. we'll top out at 66 degrees this afternoon. notice in the i ccons we have se clouds, but sunshine through the evening. that's when we will notice we'll get cloudy skies. what does that mean for your sunday? we'll wake up to cloudier conditions for tomorrow. we'll still be dry. temperatures will be comfortable. 64 degrees. we'll notice those clouds burning off by monday and tuesday. and then looking ahead towards wednesday, especially for san francisco and the north bay, we are monitoring some activity that could bring the chance of seeing showers. but a 35% chance as early as wednesday with rain likely expected for friday. temperatures begin to drop down into the 50s.

inspection in five years. welcome back. the golden gate bridge will soon be getting its first underwater inspection in five years. divers will be looking for defects in the structure and foundation. you may remember just last year crews inspected the bridge above the water. maybe you saw workers repelling from the bridge. it all checked out okay. the underground inspection is set for march. this story is really cool. a while back we told you about a fire in san jose's alum park. it revealed a home from the early 1900s. after seeing our story, decendants of the original owners came forward. >> reporter: it's a mystery born in flames. at the edge of san jose's alum rock park, a brush fire in late 2017 revealed the mysterious remains of what the park ranger

believed was an undocumented house. >> i think it's a hunting lodge, around the 1900s. >> reporter: he brought in an arc yhaeology professor. >> somebody lived there. somebody's story is there. >> reporter: the only clue to the building was an old map which listed the land owner from back before the area became part of the park. as the pair searched for answers, the most meaningful clue of all found them. >> i believe it was my great grandmother and great grandfather's property. >> reporter: after seeing our story, descendants came forward. >> i called him d.h. >> reporter: she remembers her great grandfather and his wife margaret mcginness and hearing about the ranch they once owned. >> i would ask my grandmother, where was the farm where you lived. she would say the alum rock

area. >> reporter: it is said david lunde, his two brothers and sister came west by wag coon tr. >> came in november of 1852. mostly farming horses up there. >> reporter: so the mysterious house buried in the weeds became the centerpiece of discovery linking the family and the park. >> is that a bathtub? >> yeah. >> reporter: through that connection, the mystery of the site unravelled a little more. >> being able to work with them and put the story correct, having them be a part of it is huge. >> reporter: the group believes the building was likely their home, which occupied a piece of the 400-acre ranch. based on old stamped bricks, he believes it was built between the 105 and 1920. >> that was his ranch. >> reporter: where things like bricks tell stories of a building, people tell stories of a home. >> even though this one building may not seem that terribly important, it's part of the

sto story of how san jose came to be what it is today. >> there's lots of history. if the fire didn't happen, we would have never found this. >> reporter: mac planned to install an exhibit at the park with artifacts from the site. now there will be pictures and names to go with it. the story of a lost building helping to find a family. joe rosato, jr., nbc bay area news. gamers across the world are upset after a glitch involving a bay area video game company. electronic arts is having problems with its servers. all games were impacted. ea was launching a demo for its latest game, called anthem, when this outage happened. the redwood city-based company has more than 300 million players around the world. ea says services are still returning to normal. a breakout documentary about a silicon valley company is catching attention at the sundance film festival.
