while the snow may be ending, the cold is just starting. >> it's here. the coldest climate to hit in decades. dangerous, even deadly temperatures blanketing highly populated areas of the u.s. warnings, closings, and more. this is no joke. >> news signals that the mueller investigation will be wrapping up soon. today roger stone faces a judge in district court. starbucks billionaire howard schultz is brewing up trouble for democrats, spaking what could be a major backlash. breaking news out of texas involving five police officers injured in a shooting while serving a warrant. atlanta is pulling out all the stops to ensure nothing gets in the way of super bowl liii. for life-threatening temperatures. more than 1,100 flights were canceled at chicago's o'hare international airport on monday due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. the average delay was around an hour. today and tomorrow could be among chicago's coldest days ever with low temperatures forecast to reach 21 below zero. michigan's governor is set to declare a state of emergency this morning. some areas of the state have already been buried in over seven inches of snow. >> the governor of wisconsin declared a state of emergency yesterday. the great lakes area could see temperatures in the negative 20s and 30s, which will feel much colder. one man in whitefish bay, wisconsin, was making the most of the chilly situation, being called dad yaefrt for going out to clear the snow while dressed as a pink and purple unicorn and also staying warm. it's actually a great idea.us >> good morning. you were just talking about numbers and you don't think it could be that dangerous. the time outside, the exposure to the skin, it's not m north dakota all the way towards

erie, pennsylvania. we have windchill warnings from about 44li current windchills. we're now just seeing the heart of this really cold air coming down over bismarck, fargo. about 30 minutes it will take you to get frostbite on exposed skin. not that bad yet in chicago, but it's going to get there. tomorrow morning is the peak of this outbreak. negative 51 possible in chicago. negative 54 in minneapolis. by thursday, we push that cold air into areas of the northeast, especially northern new england. notice we're not quite as bad on the i-95 corridor. chicago and minneapolis, three mornings in a row with these dangerous windchills. as far as the record lows go, the number to watch is goinginc. we just updated it. now expecting negative 23. it's going to be close. we're going to give a go for it, possible lip the coldest ever. >> you can lose a finger waiting for anll thank you.

now to breaking news out of houston where five police officers were wounded. police there were trying to serve a search warrant during a drug investigation when they were met with gunfire. the two suspects were killed during the fire fight. the police department said late last night two of the officers were in critical but stable condition. for more, let's go to kprc reporter sally ma'am a deux in houston. >> reporter: it was supposed to be another day for hpd's narcotics unit. officers were in the process of serving a search warrant at a suspected drug house in the 7800 block of harding street monday afternoon when the chief of police says officers were met with gunfire. >> immediately upon reaching the door, the officers came under fire from one or two suspects inside the house. >> reporter: in the midst of the chaotic scene, four hpd officers were shot and one hurt in the knee. >> someone's shooting. >> reporter: rosie telles was some of the officers on her phone. >> i seen one of the officers

come out of the house shot in the arm. i seen another officer come out shot in the leg. >> reporter: she said the officers sat in her car waiting for the ambulance. how long were the officers in the back of your car? >> not that long. maybe about five, ten minutes. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. officers then took control of the scene and sent in two robots in the home, where gunfire was once again exchanged, killing the two suspects. >> we could not do what we do without the community we serve. this all began because a neighbor had the courage to say, we're not going to put up. we think that they're dealing dope out of this house, and we don't just ignore that. >> reporter: now, out of the five officers that were injured during this shooting, the officer shot in the shoulder has been released. phill phillip, back to you. after over a year and a half of indictments and intrigue, the russia probe is reportedly wrapping up. special counsel robert mueller's high profile investigation into possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia during the 2016 election is nearly finished according to acting

attorney general matthew whitaker. >> i am comab but right now, you know, the investigation is, i think, close to being completed, and i hope that we can get the report from director mueller as soon as possible. >> meanwhile, the latest case in connection to the probe will play out in a d.c. courtroom this morning as longtime trump campaign adviser roger stone is arraigned. nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest. >> reporter: seven counts in the russia investigation obstruction, witness tampering, five counts of making false statements to a congressional committee. he denies them all. and while prosecutors are not alleging a direct connection here to russia, they are saying between the trump centerpiece, campaign and wikileaks, the organization that released those hacked democratic e-mails that the u.s. believes were hacked by russia. he denies all of this and has said that he won't make a deal

with the special counsel, but now says he may testify. >> any chance you'll cooperate with special counsel robert mueller if he asks? >> you know, that's a question i would have to -- i'd have to determine after my attorneys have some discussion. if there's wrongdoing by other people in the campaign that i know about, which i know of none, but if there is, i would certainly testify honestly. >> reporter: you may remember stone had said that he would never testify against president trump. now saying that if he's asked, he and his attorneys may decide that he'll testify, but that he doesn't know of anything wrong. frances. >> he was adamant. i want to ask you about this on again, off again, on again whether it comes to the state of the union. >> reporter: on again. it looks like it's on tuesday. nancy pelosi has extended an invitation to the president to come to capitol hill and do the speech on tuesday, february 5th, now that the shutdown is over.

>> all right. we will see. tracie potts for us. thank you. trouble brewing this morning for former starbucks ceo howard schultz over his possible presidential bid. democrats say if schultz runs as an independent, it would only help president trump win a second term. the head of the liberal think tank center for american progress even threatened to organize a boycott against starbucks in protest. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on the growing backlash. >> reporter: billionaire former starbucks ceo howard schultz could be brewing trouble for democrats in 2020, announcing he is considering running as an independent, tweeting -- >> both parties at the extreme are not representing the silent majority of the american people. >> reporter: the lifelong democrat tells "60 minutes" -- >> the american people are exhausted. their trust has been broken, and they are looking for a better choice. >> reporter: schultz, who grew up in brooklyn public housing, transformed star bucks from a

single seattle coffee bean shop into a global brand. 30,000 stores in 77 countries. he could finance his own race. forbes says he's worth $3.5 billion. that's more than donald trump. the president goading him to run, tweeting, howard schultz doesn't have the guts to run for president. third-party candidates have changed elections. president bush 41 always blamed ross perot for his re-election loss. in 2016, third parties drew more than 5% of the vote. another billionaire, mike bloomberg, exploring running as a democrat, tweeted that he had considered running as an independent before, but an independent would just split the anti-trump vote and end up re-electing the president. >> that was andrea mitchell reporting. striking new dash cam video out of south texas shows the tense moments when a driver here takes off with three police officers. you'll see them hanging right there in the door. one officer, who was unable to let go in time, was hurt. the footage was shot from two different angles by patrol vehicles. in the second video, you can
