and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> hey, everybody. welcome to "today" on this tuesday morning. we're so happy that you're joining us this morning. >> yeah. excitement is building for the super bowl for most fans. but weather is not going to help folks get there. >> exactly. we've got icy conditions, even snow on the way leading to canceled flights, closed school, and offices in atlanta today. it's all part of the dangerously cold weather and the storms facing a large section of this country. we're going to get to al in just a moment, but first, dylan is bundled up tight in minneapolis. hey, dylan. how are you? >> reporter: hey, hoda. i'm okay right now. but, you know, schools and even colleges are being closed because of the cold. can you believe that in minnesota they're closing schools because of the cold? we bought a thermometer. we had it in the car early this morning. look at how quickly the temperature has dropped since the thermometer's been placed outside? it is now inching closer and closer to 10 below zero.

the cold we're forecasting hasn't been felt in more than 20 years. and that means some millennials have never been this cold. right now the actual temperature is 7 below in minneapolis. the windchill is 26 below. and this is actually the warmest it's going to be all day. this morning parts of the midwest bracing for yet another blast of arctic weather. a once in a generation cold outbreak expected to drop temperatures across the region to their lowest levels in more than two decades. the life-threatening conditions likely to last for several days. in chicago, the windchill could dip to 40 degrees below zero which could lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. in minneapolis with the forecasted windchill of 50 below, frostbite could occur in five minutes or less. the national weather service in iowa actually warning people to avoid taking deep breaths and minimize talking. >> like we've always preached,

don't get out of your car because the frostbite could set in in a matter of minutes. >> reporter: the dangerous outbreak coming after a winter storm dumped more than 6 inches of snow on the region. on monday, more than 1,000 flights grounded to and from chicago alone. treacherous travel in north dakota and minnesota where 130 accidents happened by midday. the southeast now in the path of that same system. in atlanta as football fans begin pouring into town for super bowl liii, crews workiaro roads for snow and ice. trying to avoid a repeat of the so-called snow jam of 2014 when only 2 inches of snowfall completely paralyzed atlanta freeways stranding motorists for hours. a dose of southern discomfort for football fans. as winter extends its icy grip across the nation.

and this is minnehaha falls behind me here. obviously normally a raging water fall but it is frozen solid. another thing you might hear is that your eyeballs can freeze when it's 40 to 50 below windchills. and you know what? that's actually true. there's -- you know, some people who work outdoors, if you're facing the wind and you're outside for a long period of time without eye protection, your eyeballs could actually freeze. but for the everyday person outside for just a few minutes, if you keep blinking, that's not going to happen. but still, just another reason to stay indoors during this brutal cold. guys? >> let's not test it, dylan. please go inside. >> thank you, dylan. we go to al who's got a lot more on this cold, the storms, everything. al, good morning. >> yeah. to give you an idea how widespread this is, guys, 85% of the lower 48 below freezing today. 75 million of us today are going to be below zero. right now you look at how widespread this cold is with windchills. marquette feels minus 12. 9 in paducah.

9 in albany. and then for the day on wednesday, we are looking at feeling like 51 below zero in chicago. 54 below zero in minneapolis. minus 8 in binghamton. thursday, minus 40 windchills in minneapolis. new york city's windchill minus 12. portland minus 10. and look at this historic freeze. tomorrow morning, 23 cities are expected to break or tie their record lows. on thursday, we could see upwards of 31 cities tying or breaking their records. in fact, look at des moines. des moines, this historic freeze. we expect to see those temperatures really plummet. we're going to look at 22 degrees below zero. that's the coldest since february 1996. chicago, minus 13. if they get to zero in the next hour, they'll be at zero or below for the next 60 hours.

detroit, three consecutive days of record cold. and we've got the storm alerts. winter storm watches and warnings. from hattiesburg, mississippi, up to the northeast. here's the radar, heavy rain to the south. snow making its way to the east. you can see light snow through atlanta maybe 1 to 2 inches. as we get into the northeast, we're looking from 6 to 9 inches. interior sections of new york on into new england. hoda? >> all right, al. thanks. now to breaking news overnight. a chaotic scene in houston. five police officers are recovering from injuries after they fell victim to what's being called an horrific attack at a suspected drug house. gabe gutierrez has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. it was a wild shootout as these officers tried to serve a warrant. one of those officers has just been released from the hospital. two are in good condition, and two others are critical. >> we have multiple officers shot. multiple officers shot. >> reporter: this morning the city of houston is shaken after

four police officers were shot serving a drug search warrant in a residential neighborhood. a fifth officer injured in the chaos. >> we have the house surrounded. >> reporter: the police chief says the suspects open fire as soon as members of an undercover narcotics team enter. >> immediately upon breaching the door, the officers came under fire from one or two suspects inside the house. we're not sure how many of the suspects fired at this time. >> reporter: police returning fire killing two suspects on the scene but not before two officers were critically injured. both shot in the neck. they were air lifted to the hospital while three others were rushed by ambulance. the raid the result of a tip the house was being used to deal drugs. >> a black tar heroin was being dealt out of this. we know the poison is killing so many kids. >> right here! someone's shooting! >> reporter: neighbors shot video as it unfolded. rosie was driving home when the gunfire erupted. >> i saw an officer come out of

the house shot in the arm. the other in the leg. >> reporter: she sheltered two of the officers in her car while they waited for others. >> officers down. >> reporter: neighboring homes evacuated for a time as s.w.a.t. and police flooded the area. the head of the police union angry his officers are being treated like targets. >> we are sick and tired of having dirt bags trying to take our lives when all we're trying to do is protect this community and protect our families. enough is enough. >> reporter: most of the officers in the undercover police operation were long-time veterans. one of them the lead agent, 54 years old, has now been shot four times over the course of his career. savannah and hoda? >> such a sad story. all right, gabe. thank you. now to some new developments in the mueller investigation. roger stone a long-time political adviser to the president faces a federal judge today on a host of charges. and we're hearing from the very top that the special counsel's work could soon be coming to an end. we've got complete coverage. we'll start with kristen welker on the story. kristen, good morning.

>> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. this will be yet another dramatic moment in the russia investigation. in just hours, roger stone will appear here in federal court where he will be criminally charged on seven counts including lying to congress. and it does come as this nearly two-year investigation could soon be coming to a close. this morning for the first time, the acting attorney general saying publicly special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian meddling could be nearly complete. >> the investigation is, i think, close to being completed and i hope that we can get the report from director mueller as soon as we -- as possible. >> reporter: nbc news was first to report mueller could report his findings as early as next month. it comes as roger stone is heading to federal court in just hours charged with seven counts including obstruction, making false statements, and witness

tampering. stone touching down in washington late monday. >> the only stripes i look good in are pinstripes. >> reporter: but after sending mixed signals on whether he would cooperate with mueller, on fox news he was praising president trump. >> i am not going to testify against him because i possess no information. >> reporter: it is said he held the information from wikileaks that were damaging to the clinton campaign. stone insists he hasn't done anything wrong. >> there is no russian collusion. i had no collaboration with wikileaks. >> reporter: press secretary sarah sanders asked if mr. trump would pardon his former adviser. >> can you guarantee that the president won't pardon roger stone? >> again, i'm not going to talk about hypotheticals that are just ridiculous. >> reporter: the president has tried to down play his relationship with stone, but the two were confidants for decades. and now stone is the sixth person in the president's orbit

to be ensnared in the sprawling mueller investigation that has loomed large over the trump white house. >> the more this goes on, the more and more we see none of these things have anything to do with the president. >> and kristen, there's a development and it has to do with the president's former long-time attorney michael cohen. what's going on? >> reporter: well, savannah, house democrats on monday announced that the president's former fixer michael cohen will testify behind closed doors on capitol hill next week. now, cohen had been scheduled to testify publicly, but he pulled out citing concerns about his family's safety amid what he called threats from president trump and the president's attorney rudy giuliani. now, they have lashed out at cohen and his family members on twitter and in public, but mr. trump and giuliani have denied that those are threats. back to you. >> all right. kristen welker, thank you. meantime, things are heating up when it comes to the 2020 presidential race. one potential candidate, former

starbucks ceo howard schultz got a taste of what the campaign trail could be like. peter alexander has that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. nothing is official yet. howard schultz saying he'll take the next few months to decide whether he'll formally launch a 2020 bid. but the democrats worrying he would hand re-election to the democra republicans isn't backing down. this morning starbucks tycoon howard schultz is getting roasted after announcing he's seriously considering running for president as an independent. heckled during a q&a session in new york city monday night. >> don't help elect trump. you egotistical billionaire [ bleep ]. >> reporter: democrats fear an independent bid could threaten their ability to beat trump in 2020. he was asked about that by andrew ross-sorkin.

>> if you were hurting in the polls, would you drop beforehand? >> can't answer that question today. but i'm certainly not going to do anything to put donald trump back in the oval office. >> reporter: but the chorus of criticism keeps growi ining froe democratic party and washington, don't do it, howard. president trump taunting him to get into the race tweeting, howard schultz doesn't have the guts to run for president. schultz the former starbucks ceo built one of the biggest brands from the ground up. now 30,000 stores in 7 countries. he's worth $3.5 billion according to forbes, more than mr. trump. another billionaire michael bloomberg who is now exploring a run as a democrat warning, an independent would just split the anti-trump vote and end up re-electing the president. schultz's response? >> mike bloomberg has built a great business, was a great mayor. i have tremendous respect for

him. but i don't agree with his conclusion. >> reporter: overnight president trump told the crowd at a fund raiser at the trump hotel here he was trying to get howard schultz into the race with his earlier tweet because the president thinks it will help him. that's according to "the new york times" quoting a person in the room. >> a lot of people are wondering about former vice president joe biden, whether or not he'll throw his hat in the ring. what's the latest on him? >> reporter: remember joe biden remains one of the biggest wild cards in this sweepstakes. he told a crowd in florida monday he's making preparations for a possible campaign but did stop short of a definitive signal he will get in. the former v.p. saying i'm running the traps on this. i don't want to make this a fool's errand. i'm a los closer than i was before christmas and will make a decision soon. so we wait. >> peter, thank you. craig's got another story. >> good morning. this is going to be one that's going to hit close to home for

you especially. super bowl liii almost here just days away. while the new england patriots and l.a. rams prepare to take the field, the nfl is still doing a lot of damage control in that controversial missed call that helped keep the saints out of the big game. stephanie gosk has been following the twists of this one. what's the latest now? >> good morning, craig. the super bowl week is supposed to be about the big game coming up, not the one played over a week ago, hoda. but that in l.a. has not gone away. the refs blew it but there is little that can be done. atlanta is buzzing. super bowl sunday is now just days away. >> you work hard for that one game and you've got to be able to get it done in the biggest moment. >> reporter: the veteran new england patriots face off against the new kids on the block. the high-flying l.a. rams. >> being here, get to experience all this and be part of it, this is what you work for.

>> reporter: but about 500 miles away from all the pre-game action, fans in new orleans can't quite let this play go. >> crowd's going crazy as there's no flag right on the saints sideline. >> reporter: the now infamous case of pass interference where no penalty flags were thrown. >> it's a game-changing call. for a call like that not to be made, man. just hard to swallow. >> reporter: the city missing out on the big game left devastated. >> one of the worst blown calls i've ever seen if not the worst. >> reporter: from the bakery churning out no-ref cookies to the eye doctor jokingly offering free eye exams for nfl officials. and now even the league appears to admit it was a blown call. in response to a federal lawsuit filed by several saints season ticket holders demanding the nfl replay the game. lawyers for the nfl writing in part, one or more penalties for pass interference or illegal helmet-to-helmet contact were mistakenly not called in the

game and the nfl would like its officials on the field to make these calls. but citing human error, the nfl argue roger goodell does not have the authority to order a replay of the game. the league now asking a judge to throw the case out. saints quarterback drew brees speaking out about the incident on monday. posting on instagram he spent the last week navigating the heart ache and disappointment from the game. resolving that i refuse to let this hold us down. while the lawsuit lingers in court, the rams are moving on. >> i feel bad for it, but for us, you know, we're here. we're very happy to be here. >> so they're not going to replay it. but drew brees is 40. and if my buddy tom brady is any example for him -- >> was that just a little salt in the wound? was that what that was? >> don't poke the bear, steph. do not poke the bear. >> for the nfl to make that admission, there had to be a lawsuit that was filed by saints fans to get it. i think that's the other thing too. you sort of wanted them to come

throughout the bay area. >> yes and they're moving through fairly quickly. it's been spotty as well as we look at radar this morning, a few rain showers moving through san francisco, the peninsula, as well as the south bay, extending to the tri-valley. once that moves out, clearing and a nice afternoon. we're not done with the rain. another round will be here tomorrow during the afternoon but as we take a live look outside in san jose, we are seeing the rain drop raindrops clearing as temperatures head into the mid-60s for today. we'll have another chance of rain for the afternoon. a break on thursday, and a very soggy weekend ahead. let's get an update on the commute now from mike. >> kari, we are looking at a pleasant drive for tuesday. the commute kicking in over the last half hour especially in the south bay. look at where the red is, northbound throughout 85 and 280. i'll click on the radar quickly, it caught 101 and 680 over the last few minutes. it will add to slowing and slicker conditions. meanwhile, we still have this closure as far as we know, el camino at redwood avenue north

milwaukee, chicago, all feeling temps well below zero. the national weather service in iowa actually warning people to, get this, avoid taking deep breaths and minimize talking. >> we can't go there. >> that system will bring deep freeze to areas like washington, d.c., new york, and boston tomorrow. al will be back in just a little bit with the forecast. president trump has accepted house speaker nancy pelosi's invitation to give his state of the union speech next tuesday. the speech was originally scheduled for tonight but postponed because of the partial government shutdown. in the meantime, new analysis now reveals that the shutdown cost the american economy $11 billion. that's according to the nonpartisan congressional budget office, which released the report on monday. the report takes into consideration lost output from federal workers and delayed government spending on goods and services. most of the damage to the economy will be reversed as federal workers return to their jobs, but the report estimated $3 billion in economic activity is gone forever.

a new york woman is recovering in the hospital this morning after spending three entire days trapped in an elevator. firefighters were called to a manhattan townhouse monday to rescue the woman. she worked in the home as a housekeeper. she said she'd been trapped since friday while the owners were away for the weekend. the 53-year-old woman is in stable condition. the owner of the townhouse says the family is relieved and thankful she's doing well. they also say appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that something like this never happens again. at this point no word on what caused that elevator to malfunction. also this morning, the family of michael jackson is firing back after the debut of a controversial new documentary. >> it features allegations from two men who claim the music legend molested them when they were boys. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, guys, good morning. no clip ofs that four-hour documentary have been released to the public, but we're told it played to a stunned crowd at sun dance, many shocked by the

graphic allegations made now resurfacing a decade after michael jackson's death. >> plagued by allegations of child molestation in life and now in death, michael jackson's family calls the new documentary "leaving neverland" a public lynching of the music legend. after its debut at sun dance, the jackson family blasting the filmmakers and the accusers writing, the creators of this film were not interested in the truth. people have always loved to go after michael. he was an easy target because he was unique. >> it's over four hours of incredibly graphic descriptions of sexual abuse. it was incredibly devastating to watch, and i think that this will reopen a lot of old wounds and perhaps even question jackson's legacy as a pop icon. >> reporter: those who have seen the film call it graphic with disturbing stories of lewd acts between jackson and two boys. >> everybody just looked very, very shell shocked and nobody really knew how to react, i

think. >> reporter: the four-hour sundance documentary, which will air on hbo over the summer features the accounts of accusers james safechuck and wade robson who were both befriended by jackson when they were boys. tmz posted video of robson speaking after the screening. >> we can't change what happened to us, and we can't do anything -- >> reporter: the jackson estate calls both men liars pointing out they testified in support of jackson during earlier claims of abuse and then unsuccessfully sued his estate suggesting both men are now trying to cash in on the performer. jackson was acquitted of molestation charges before his death. >> people started getting up and just saying wow, wow. i have no doubts about what happened now. this is -- this is intense. >> reporter: this morning old allegations seeing new light surrounding one of music's

biggest stars. >> so miguel, as you mention there, the jackson family coming out strongly criticizing the documentary. what about the makers of the film? what are they saying? >> the director said the documentary was about hearing the stories of the two accusers in their own words, not about the opinions of other people without direct knowledge of the accusations. he says he stands behind the documentary. >> miguel, thank you. let's turn now to mr. roker got a check of the weather. hey, al. >> we're talking more about this cold. it is dangerously cold. there are some safety tips. make sure you wear multiple layers. cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold so that you don't damage them. keep space heaters away from flammable items like curtains, things like that, and whatever you do people may try to augment their heat with generators. keep those generators outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and of course don't forget about your pets. bring them inside. windchill advisories and warnings right now, we've got 44 million people at risk from

montana all the way to new york and down to north carolina, so we're going to be watching that. right now you could get frostbite in 30 minutes if you're outside in chicago. 30 minutes in minneapolis, 10 minutes in bismarck. if we move sinto tomorrow morning, 5 minutes exposed flesh could suffer from frostbite in chicago. 30 minutes in cleveland, 30 in st. louis, 10 in pierre, 5 in minneapolis, and thursday morning in syracuse, a half hour you could have frostbite, 10 minutes in chicago, detroit, and it even hurts to look at those numbers. all right, right now as we take a live look outside in san francisco, low clouds and even some spotty showers moving through. we will be tracking this rain that will be moving out fairly quickly as we go through the rest of the morning, and even though we have a wet morning commute, the evening commute will be try. we'll take a break from the showers, as this system moves in, another round of rain arrives for the bay area by

the glitch allows iphone users to secretly listen in on the person they're calling without the recipient actually accepting the call. the problem revealed in reports that went viral overnight raising serious privacy concerns. launched in october of 2018, the group face time feature allows up to 32 people to participate in a single audio or video call, but experts say the malfunction is easy to execute. all an iphone user has to do is call someone using face time, tap the person function and their own phone number. before the recipient has a chance to accept or reject the call, audio from the recipient's phone then streams to the caller. >> this is so weird. >> this is not okay. >> according to various reports, if the recipient hits the phone's volume down or power buttons thinking the call has been declined another curious bug kicks in. the recipient's audio cuts out, but the caller can suddenly monitor that person's camera.

the latest development of the mueller investigation, the arraignment this morning of long time donald trump associate roger stone, stone entered a plea of not guilty to charges of obstruction of justice. this is pictures of the arrival. witness tampering and making false statements, coming just days after stone was arrested in his florida home in a pre-dawn raid by armed fbi agents who also confiscated stone's computers and other devices. nbc news justice correspondent peet williams was in the courtroom. he's made his way outside. set the scene for us. he's allowed out on bail and the

judge ordered the same conditions set by the judge in florida will still apply, meaning he has to stay in the southern district of florida or d.c. here or the eastern district of new york, the brooklyn area, same travel conditions, no passport, can't apply for a new passport and he's told to come back here for a status hearing february 1st at 1:30 in the afternoon. he said almost nothing in court. his lawyer entered the not guilty plea for him. the only thing he said was he understood the judge's orders, that he has to abide by the travel restrictions and he raised his right-hand and swore he would abide by the conditions of release, lester, not clear whether he'll come back here on february 1st for the status hearing. sometimes defendants are not required to be present. the lawyers will have something to say about that. it was, as we expect, a brief hearing. and he said virtually nothing.

>> i want to bring in legal analyst danny cavalos. is there an opening here for additional charges as this case continues to go forward? >> yes. the government can file a superceding indictment down the road. if you believe the mueller team is continuing to investigate, for example, a broad conspiracy, but they don't believe they have enough to charge it yet that is likely what would happen, a later on down the road indictment that names roger stone and possibly other defendants depending on what is uncovered. >> danny, thank you. peter alexander is at the white house for us. peter, yesterday we heard from the acting attorney general whitaker who said the mueller investigation is winding down. is there anything inconsistent with what we're seeing here with this new case, and that statement? >> well, it does give indications that robert mueller may be sort of winding down in terms of his investigation. other indications we've seen recently, the fact the

sentencing phase for michael flynn is expected to take place shortly. even as we heard from matt whitaker, the acting attorney general, this morning we're hearing from top democrats, nancy pelosi and adam schiff, they don't want to hear it from the acting attorney general, they think robert mueller can speak for himself. nbc first to report last december according to government officials and others familiar with the investigation that it could be winding down, that a confidenti confidential report from robert mueller could come as early as mid-february. so for now we wait. here at the white house, though, the president has been fiercely trying to dis tance himself from roger stone, a man he's been close to, a confidant for decades now saying stone wasn't a part of his campaign, at least anywhere near the election. sarah sanders insisting that this has nothing to do with the president and has nothing to do with the white house. lester? >> all right, peter alexander at the white house, thank you very much. we'll continue to follow this and all the day's news.

coming in, you can make it the night before, pop it in the oven before your guests arrive. >> delicious. >> we're going to start off by making our spice mix. we've got eggs in there, you want to whip them up really nice. if you want to start adding some of these spices, that is some pumpkin pie spice, which i like. it a's nice shortcut. there's some salt, there's some cinnam cinnamon. if you prefer to use ginger or whatever, personalize it however you want. i added a little bit of maple syrup, and we can put some in there. >> beautiful. >> some coconut oil, and then we've got our almond milk. you mix that all up. >> why do you like the almond nis milk. >> because it's dairy free. it's a lighter option. this time of year we're trying to be a little more wholesome. so instead of taking things away -- >> i like the idea of just tweaking. i'm good at tweaking. you know, ripping carbs and sugar away is hard, but making -- like i had a turkey burger last night and we had just lettuce instead of a bun.

it's less carbs. >> you're going to whip this into a custard? >> whip this into a custard. no added sugar right? >> i did a little bit of maple syrup. that's not a refined sugar. it's got the sweetness and also some nutrients. pour it over bread. i'm using whole wheat sandwich bread. if you're doing dairy free, make sure there's no dairy in the bread. check the ingredients. you can use day old bread. i never have. who really has day old bread to use. >> croutons and french toast you can do with day old bread. >> kpaexactly. i've got coconut oil i've melted in here. >> do you let this sit at all? >> you let that soak while you do the apples. you can use any kind of oil or butter you prefer. then i'm adding some lemon zest, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, maple syrup and if you want to give that a toss. let that soften up little by. >> how long do you cook these

apples? like five to ten minutes. >> okay. >> it looks like this, gorgeous. >> that looks good. >> and over here i've got our bread that's been soaking. >> the custard's been absorbed. >> it's absorbed all that good stuff the get your app lles in there, just kind of fold them in there. >> we do so much pancakes at our house. french toast is -- >> pancakes are delicious, but i feel like it's high maintenance because you're doing them, you know, in batches, right? you can't just walk away. >> you prep this in advance, put it in a pan you've already greased. this goes into the oven, and then this is my favorite part. >> how long in the oven? >> 350 for 45 minutes to an hour. just until it puffs up. i've got coconut oil, brown sugar, a little bit of salt. whisk that all up. let it bubble for about five minutes. then you whisk in some -- oh, wait, wait, wait. sir, you are missing the best part here. we're pouring our almond milk
