4:30 am
delsym 12-hour. nothing lasts longer for powerful cough relief. we )re tracking stormy weather friday, february 1st, and we are anticipating some rain headed our way, but we're getting a break this morning, which is a nice thing for your morning commute, and a good way at least to start our friday morning. thanks so much for getting up early. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now, we want to get a look at that weather this morning. cool outside. >> yes, it is cool. it starts out humid. we're getting readye here later this morning, into the afternoon, so as you make your plans for friday, whatever you can get done early, that's a good thing, because we will see the rain spreading bay area by late morning into early afternoon as this storm system oa once again have another one right behind that. it will be a busy weekend in terms of wet weather as we go
4:31 am
throughout the day and take you hour by hour. we'll see light rain moving in around 11:00. some of the heavier rain gets here by early afternoon, and continues to become more widespread and heavy going into tonight. so we'll talk about all of the things that we can expect as the storm system moves in, coming up in a few minutes, and mike, you have a different look at richmond. >> yep, same point of view. the toll plaza here on the richmond side but notice all lanes are open. they picked up a little earlier than the last few days over there. so westbound light commute and no problems, also it's friday, i think just like everybody else, the road crews overnight want to get started on their weekend. the bay bridge no problem getting into san francisco. there may be a tire r lanes approaching the skyway, there may be a quick traffic break and that's about it. breaking news in the decision 2020, senator cory booker announcing that he is running for president. the 43-year-old u.s. senator stanford university receiving his bachelor's, masters and also
4:32 am
playing football there. he was elected to the senate in 2013. scott mcgrew is following this breaking story and he will have more for us in an hour. new overnight, highway 17 in the south bay back open this morning after a deadly crash during the evening commute. a man driving a toyota suv smashed into a tree near summit road just south of los gatos, happened about 5:40 last night. traffic was a mess for several hours after that crash. the driver has not been identified. the tree the driver hit was damaged, had to be chopped down before today's storm. later this morning, students in oakland will walk out of class in support of teachers who they feel, among other things, are underpaid, and the same teachers could be going on strike later this month. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos live for us in oakland with those details on the walkout. pete? >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, marcus and laura. students here at oakland tech behind me are going to participate in this walk-out later this morning, and as you
4:33 am
mentioned, this is happening as teachers may potentially take part in a strike later this month. i want to bring you up to date on where things stand when it comes to that strike. later today, they're going to wrap up what's called a week-long strike authorization vote. this is going to authorize the oakland teachers union to decide if the teachers will go on strike, depending on what deal is offered to them by the oakland unified school district. now, teachers are unhappy over wages, calling for a 12% raise over the next three years and believe that classrooms are overcrowded, but the district is dealing with a $30 million budget shortfall so they say tough decisions will be made, which includes potentially closing down close to two dozen schools. i spoke with a teacher who is unhappy with the district which just this past week decided to roots international academy in east oakland to deal with the current budget issues. >> teachers are fired up, and we cannot take it anymore, and the district is only escalating the
4:34 am
problem, especially with the closure of roots. >> reporter: but today's strike authorization vote does not mean a strike is eminent. the teachers union, school district and a mediator are going to have to sit down through what's called a fact-finding process for the next couple of weeks. then the district will present an offer and from there, the union could decide on a strike. so we're looking at possibly a teacher strike at the end of the month, but we know that student walkout will take place at oakland tech at 11:00 a.m. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> a busy day there, thanks a lot, pete. 4:34 and a video posted on social media is getting a lot of attention. it shows a vallejo police officer tackling and handcuffing a man. now the video was shot by adrian burrell of vallejo, he was standing on his porch when an officer pulled over his cousin in the driveway. he immediately started recording the video, when he saw the officer draw his gun. burrell, who is african-american and a marine veteran was quickly

handcuffed and taken to the ground. the vallejo police department has opened an internal investigation into the case. burrell says he wants to sit down with the officer and the police chief to open a dialogue. we reached out to the police department for comment, but we haven't heard back. continuing coverage of a story we first brought you on it "today in the bay," a popular local restaurant making national headlines because of president trump's trademark hat. >> the owner of san mateo's worst hall restaurant won't serve anyone wearing a red "make america great again" cap. the response is mixed. sergio quintana has more from downtown san mateo. >> reporter: it seemed like a typical thursday night dinner crowd at the wurst hall. "it hasn't happened yet but if you come to my restaurant maerg a maga cap, you aren't getting served." he compares wearing the signature trump campaign hats to wearing a swastika or ku klux

klante shocking. >> reporter: republican leader hernandez is critical of the now deleted tweet. >> i think someone needs diversity training. that's my itithought. how inclusive the left wants things they are, then they have something like this of not being inclusive of other people. >> reporter: since the tweet, the wurst hall received a deluge of negative views on yelp. so many it blocked comments about the relatively new restaurant. customers and san mateo residents we talked to didn't seem too fazed by the controversy. >> i don't think you'll see anyone here protesting. . it's a pretty safe bet if you put out a tweet like that you're not getting too many pushing back. >> it's up to him. can he do what he wants. it's his store and good for him. >> reporter: haven there yet, but maybe now i will. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." >> the c abohe his tweet or his

decision to erase it. it's not clear if restaurant will serve someone maergwearing maga hat or someone expressing his freedom of speech. friends are hoping a video will help them find kristen mahoney. surveillance video showed her and her dog at john's grill in san francisco, where she ate lunch last saturday. later that day, her dog was found roaming alone at union square and someone found her wallet and cell phone on the train. >> we're concerned she's been taken advantage of or that she's not well. >> john's grill and christa's friends announced a $5,000 reward for information that leads them to her. happening today, we're expected to get a better idea of the state of mayor carolyn obringer expects to address the city's chamber of commerce.

the travel conditions will be going downhill, as we go throughout the day, but everything is looking nice and smooth right now, as we get a look at storm ranger, that's the red scan there, you're seeing coming from san bruno mountain and it is tracking this next system that will be moving closer with some rain, as we go into this afternoon and also into the evening hours. once again, we have a very busy weekend headed our way with a couple of storms moving in, and out ahead of that, the national weather service issued a high wind watch for the whole bay area and we will have the potential of getting some gusts up to 60 miles per hour, that could bring down some trees, and we also have a flash flood watch looking at the potential 0, of getting anywhere from one to two inches for much of the bay hills.nd up to four inches in so as we get a look at what to expect and when, and once again, the earlier you can get on the roads, the better, because by 11:00, we're starting to see some light rain moving in and it
4:47 am
gets heavier as we go through 1:30 to 2:00, and becoming more widespread in time for the evening commute. when we see the yellows and the reds, that indicates some heavy downpours that will continue as we go throughout tonight and also early tomorrow morning. here we are at 7:30, still some heavy rain coming down, and then it becomes more scattered as we go into the afternoon, but this is also when we could see some thunderstorms firing up, as we go into saturday and even into sunday. so a lot to track over here the next couple of days with the high winds, the thunderstorm chance and the heavy rain that some computer models are showing for four inches of rain and as for sierra snow, a lot of it throughout the weekend, with se tl five feet for some of the higher elevations, and then as this cold air moves in, we're going to be left with some very now, head over to mike, you're tracking something near the caldecott tunnel. >> there's a crash and closure,
4:48 am
