the names of priests and others credibly accused of crimes against children stretching back to the 1950s. the reckoning in the catholic chur church is far from over. >> today is a difficult day for the church and the state of texas. >> according to reports from diocese across the state of texas, nearly 300 priests and others in the church have been credibly accused of sexually abusing children for more than 70 years. >> the failure to protect our most vulnerable from abuse and hold accountable those who preyed on them, fills me with both shame and sorrow. >> cardinal daniel dinardo runs the archdiocese of galveston, houston, where 40 priests were named. and we publish it for the gospel. we publish it because of the young people who were harmed, the church is indeed wounded d

badly by this. >> most of the cases will never result in criminal charges because many of the priests are dead. for one of the accusers allegedly abused by a dallas priest on the archdiocese list, the transparency is long overdue. >> this institution has shown time and time again that it cannot police itself, and that it can't do the right thing. >> reporter: the voluntary publication of the names in texas comes six months after an explosive grand jury report in pennsylvania revealed at least 300 priests molested more than 1,000 children in the state since the 1950s. that report kuaccusing the chur of protecting its own over the most vulnerable. >> we should emphasize that while the lists of priests is long, we don't think we got them all. >> reporter: since then, dozens of diocese have voluntarily released lists of accused priests. as the church faces an increasing number of criminal investigations into its handling of sexual misconduct. the vatican is set to hold a

summit in february on the issue to instruct leaders in the church on how to investigate and be sensitive to victims. on his flight back to rome from panama, pope francis spoke about the issue. it's a human problem he said, and by making bishops aware, they can prevent the tragedy of abuse. the church says it relied on retired police officers and federal investigators to review its files in order to substantiate the claims and determine whether or not they were credible, guys. >> all right, stephanie, thank you so much. >> so disturbing. thank you. lots to get to this morning including the family of empire star jussie smollett speaking out since the actor was reportedly attacked on the streets of chicago. nbc's ron mott has the latest on it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. jussie smollett's family is supporting his report of being assaulted outside his apartment building here in downtown chicago. police say they continue to investigate looking for corroborating evidence of an

attack. >> chicago police have not yet been able to locate these people of interest captured on surveillance cameras early tuesday morning in the vicinity of the reported attack on "empire" star jussie smollett. his family now speaking out on what they are calling a racial and homophobic hate crime writing jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. his story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice. president trump commented on the incident for the first time. >> i think that's horrible. it doesn't get worse. >> reporter: chicago police who have not spoken on camera btabo the incident say they have no independent evidence to corroborate the attack. smollett told police he went to a subway restaurant a few blocks from his apartment building, ask police say video evidence supports that, between 1:30 and 1:45 a.m. two people of interest were seen here. around this corner near the entrance smollett used to get back in his building.

making sure the area around the stadium is safe. more than 10,000 cameras were also installed to keep a close eye on the crowds. a drug-sniffing dog is being credited for the largest seizure of fentanyl in u.s. history. customs and border protection officers discovered 254 pounds of the drug hidden in a floor compartment of a truck that was loaded with cucumbers. the tractor-trailer was trying to enter the u.s. through the border checkpoint in arizona. officials value the drugs at $3.5 million. fentanyl is the synthetic opioid blamed for the majority of overdose deaths. a new jersey man is accused of insurance fraud after officials say he faked a slip and fall at work, and that incident was caught on surveillance camera. check it out. you can see 57-year-old alexander goldinski throw ice on the floor in the kitchen area of his workplace, and moments later, the video shows him stopping, looking around, and then slowly falling to the floor. officials say he waited on the ground until he was discovered. he will face a judge next week.

former pink floyd bassist roger waters posting this video, urging the band to kneel in solidarity with kaepernick on sunday. an online petition asking them to drop out getting more than 113,000 signatures. earlier this week, more criticism after the nfl announced maroon 5 would not participate in the traditional press conference that artists usually take part in, instead releasing behind-the-scenes videos and photos. the band saying they would donate $500,000 with the nfl to big brothers big sisters. atlanta native gladys knight facing similar criticism after agreeing to sing the national anthem. >> everybody has got their opinions, you know, about what whatever it is, but once we get into that love thing, it all just comes together and goes wherever and we end up clapping and having a good time. >> reporter: kaepernick has gone unsigned since the 2016 season and is currently suing the nfl for collusion.

his attorney telling me this about the super bowl performers. >> they're crossing an intellectual picket line. they're saying to themselves, i care more about my career than i do about whether what i'm doing is right. >> reporter: issues off the field now crowding the stage come sunday. so, gladys knight, the empress of soul, i asked her about that notion that mark geragos posed yesterday, that this is some sort of crossing of the intellectual picket line by performing. she didn't see it that way. she said that when her husband gave -- her husband is also her manager -- when her husband said, gladys, they want you to sing the national anthem, she wrestled with it but ultimately decided that by singing the national anthem, she could use this as an opportunity to bring people together. at one point yesterday, she actually seemed on the verge of getting emotional talking about how much she loved america and how she's been singing the national anthem since she was 4 or 5 years old and that when it's time to say the pledge of

weather's concerned. and we start off out west this hour. it's their turn in the barrel as far as getting some wet, rough weather. we're talking about heavy showers, thunderstorms making their way in from the pacific northwest. secondary system then comes in tomorrow, late tonight into tomorrow, bringing heavy rain. building the snowpack up in the mountains, though, could be some mudslides we're going to be watching for. a lot of rainfall, especially from san francisco all the way down to southern california. we could be looking at 4 to 7 inches of rain in the mountains and the foothills, so we're going to be watching in extremely we've got a few more hours of that rain, and we'll be moving into the bay area, so we are going to start out with some lighter showers by early afternoon. it will become more widespread going into the evening commute, also when the winds will really start to pick up. pockets of heavy rain, here we are at 7:30 this evening, and we're going to see some widespread rain continuing through overnight, and the
