can wrestle the presidency from trump. given his low standing in the polls now which are in the mid 30s. second, serious candidates want to get the jump on the others. they hope by announcing earlier they'll game more name recognition. they'll be able to attract the best staff members and begin the arduous task of fund-raising, which takes us to that point, unlimited fund-raising. until 2010, no problem. federal laws restricted how much money candidates could raise. but the u.s. supreme court decision and the citizens united case in 2010 blew the lid off campaign limits. whereas contributions to obama, mccain campaign in 2008 amounted to a mere 1.6 billion, the numbers for the trump/clinton campaigns in 2016 soared to 2.1 billion, a 30% increase. you can expect an even larger,
7:49 am
and i mean much larger sum this year because the democrats are hungry. that's an astonishing set of numbers. to go back to the eight democrats who have already, you know, endered the ring, let's say. let's not forget 17 republican candidates, as you told me began in 2016 before donald trump emerged as the nominee. so do you think we can expect that many democrats in 2020? >> we could expect that many and probably more. >> oh, my goodness. probably more. at least 11 prominent democrats -- additional prominent democrats are mulling a run ranging from well-known personalities like joe biden and bernie sanders to younger leaders such as senator amy klobuchar. let's remember that california's

kamala harris declared just a week ago. zell current governors are also making the rounds, particularly in the first four primary and caucus states. iowa, new hampshire, south carolina and nevada. we'll have them memorized before long. they're hoping to gain traction before they announce. they're running around this country. a lot of us have not seen these people yet. they see small groups. do you think i can gather support? can i get your money? that's what many of them are doing right now. >> testing the waters behind the scenes. speaking of, last week, we heard rumblings from howard schultz that he might run as an independent. there's a lot of talk about this. how would that affect 2020? >> look, independent candidates have a really tough go when it comes to winning an election. they tend to lack strong foundations in key states.
7:51 am
they have difficulty fund-raising and face challenging conditions. this is the hardest part for landing on state ballots. ever since the emergence of political parties way back in the 1800s, no independent, no independent candidate has ever come close to winning a presidential election. but that said, the road to presidential election is riddled with independent candidates who have captured just enough votes to keep a maker candidate from winning. think of the 2000 presidential race where ralph nader won 97,000 votes in florida, where george bush beat al gore by 537 votes. absent nader's presence, you would be talking about president gore who won florida and presidency, not george w. bush. >> how can voters sort out these candidates before november of 2020? quite a ways away. >> it's not easy.
