mike will have a look at the commute for us and issues this morning. first we start with meteorologist kari hall dealing with the wet weather. >> it is really exciting, when we say hey, we could see some snow amount in hamilton. this could be over mt. diablo and the santa cruz mountains later on tonight. we're going to be watching out for that. right now temperatures are a little too warm. we are tracking a lot of rain moving through and it's going to make your morning commute wet and dangerous as we've seen some standing water on the roads, from the peninsula down to the south bay, to the east bay. it's been drying out a little while longer for parts of the north bay. as we head over toward cupertino we'll see some scattered showers continuing, and look at the temperatures, it's only going to reach about 50 degrees for the high today. more on that in just a few minutes. mike, you have more rain and several traffic alerts. >> you've had allique wou weeket accustomed to driving in the rain. one of the traffic alerts 101 at cesar chavez, the fast lane in

each direction closed, median repair work from a number of crashes overnight. more rain coming in oef here, south 680 jamming up toward our other traffic alert. south 680 is jammed up solid, 24 making that split fine toward lafayet lafayette, orinda and the caldecott tunnel. 680 south looking south main, sorry, where there's wood and nails in the roadway blocking two of your four lanes. they're trying to get the right equipment to clear that. that is a big problem for folks and alternates. another issue highway 84, and highway 35 both have mudslides and you guys are going to check in with roz because she's out there, niles canyon currently cut off. ace train is okay through the area. >> you just said it right there, the breaking news is that mudslide overnight, that shut down part of niles canyon. >> rolls plater live for us in fremont with a look at those conditions right now. roz? >> reporter: indeed. the road block continues here, we are on the mission side of

niles canyon road in the fremont area, that road block goes all the way over the road, shut down over to sunol and the chp here with the road block and turning cars around, so we have not been able to get any further than this spot, at least for now. but we have seen a number of pieces of heavy equipment come through, and large trucks, one came through just a couple of minutes ago. here is what we've learned from the chp, that mudslide happened just before 4:00 this morning, between here and sunol, just east of the first train bridge on the fremont side. it came down so hard that it struck a car, and it was hard enough hit to deploy the air bags. we don't know about any injuries in all of this. we'll have to wait until daylight to get to see the extent of how much mud is actually on the roadway, but it may be pretty extensive. we've been hearing that the mudslide could shut down this portion of niles canyon road for a couple days or so. we have to wait and see what happens and we will hopefully get closer as we get some

>> hey, laura. what we've learned is that the president's talking about everything from football to syria in the super bowl interview. the thing that really caught a lot of attention was president trump leaving the door open for another government shutdown next week. president trump tells cbs he is not ruling out another government shutdown on february 15th or declaring a national emergency to pay for a border wall. >> i don't take anything off the table. i don't like to take things off the table. it's that alternative. >> reporter: an alternative lawmakers are trying to avoid. >> a lot of us are going to do everything we can to try to make this work, to get the yes to avoid another shutdown. a wall, a fence, a barrier, whatever it takes. >> i think we can get to a solution, but it does need to include barrier funding. >> washington cannot dictate what sort of barrier and where to put it at. >> reporter: with house speaker nancy pelosi refusing to pay for a wall, the president says she's the one standing between federal employees and their paychecks.

6:00 p.m. california's attorney general is doubling down in his request to block the sale of a santa clara hospital. according to "morgan hill times" half ger becerra is asking the courts for an emergency stay before the sale of saint louise regional is purchased. a similar why for a stay was recently rejected by the judge, who approved the sale. 6:06 right now. new this morning, in contra costa county, police are searching for a suspect who shot and seriously injured a man in antioch, it happened yesterday afternoon on lemontree way and sycamore drive near antioch high school. several shots were fired. officers found the victim, who was rushed to a hospital and is in critical condition this morning. so far, police have not released any information about the suspect. happening toopday, a key hurdle in the rebuilding of paradise following last year's devastating wildfires. leaders will mark the reopening

soda springs. good thing i'm telling you where it is because you generally can't make it out. you see the lights of some cars moving through. so much snow in that area, the snowplows have been busy. some areas, in kt fact, more th eight feet of snow has fallen in the past two days. there's blizzard and avalanche warnings in effect until 10:00 tonight. also another five feet of snow may fall in parts of lake tahoe by the end of today. good for skiing, but not for trying to travel up there. >> not at all. say that again, nine feet of snow. i mean that's just unreal. so we are going to still see some bay area rain here, as we wake up this morning and get ready to head out the door. storm ranger tracking it all, showing some schoufattered show coming through parts of the peninsula, redwood city, palo alto, menlo park starting out with wet weather and we're going to see this off and on throughout the day. we are not done with this system just yet, and you want to make sure that you have the rain

gear, but also some warm clothing, because it's going to be much cooler today, and still some scattered showers that may get heavier with the potential of a few isolated thunderstorms by late morning into early afternoon. this is as another cold front drops in, and it's going to drop those temperatures today, and that could mean that we start out tomorrow morning with some snow on bay area hills, and wintry mix in parts of the north bay. so i'll continue to track that for you. headed over to mike, you've got a few crashes and traffic alerts. >> a few closures, crashes, flooding, whatever you'd like or whatever you wouldn't like. we don't want this, but it is cut off. highway 84, that's through niles canyon, closed right now. roz plater is on scene. there was a mudslide, a car was taken out by the mudslide. we're trying to find out about injuries. we do know for a fact that the roadway itself is closed right now, but ace train is able to make this roadway through the area, so it's okay. no delays for ace train, except for train number one which held off until they could inspect the

the time is 6:14. we are in a microclimate weather alert, that's a very wet start to our work week, and we've seen this rain all throughout the weekend. so now we have puddles on the roads. here is a live look in san jose. headed toward sunnyvale, our

temperatures will only reach about 50 degrees today and still some times of some heavy rain, even into the afternoon. we'll talk about some much colder air moving in, and when the rain gets out of here, coming up in less than five minutes. >> oakland, you see the soupy conditions and the traffic build. 880 is fine. it's 680 that continues with the traffic alert through walnut creek. the bay bridge shows the volume of traffic moving, slick conditions there in san francisco, another alert. watch 101 both directions, one lane's closed at cesar chavez. and good morning and very happy, rainy monday to you. alphabet, the parent company of google reports its profits today. the dow gets the week started just slightly above 25,000. the president says that's a good sign, tweeting on friday, "best january for the dow in over 30 years." this is factually true, though it lacks context. the dow 30 industrials have had

you've got to feel for one group of hawaiian airline flyers. over the weekend they got stuck on one of those flights. it took off from lax, then returned to land twice. a third time it pushed out from the gate, only to return without taking off. passengers were given hotel rooms, or placed on other flights. the airline says unfortunately the plane experienced three separate and unrelated problems, but transpacific flights also require more safety precautions >> is that where the phrase "many happy returns" comes were. >> would you want to try for the fourth time? isn't the third time the charm? >> and to get back safely. >> the charm was done. >> all right, so yeah, hopefully you don't have a flight out this morning, because it is going to be rough getting out around the bay area, even driving with all of the rain that we have coming through, and we are also going to be tracking a potential of some very cold weather and wintry mix. let's talk about how much rain we've measured here, since

friday, and it's been pretty amazing, especially in bay area hills. we've gotten over eight inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. that measurement near ben loman. in morgan hill over 3 inches in san jose. san francisco almost an inch and a half of rain there, and we are looking at close to an inch in oakland, and also in concord. it is all over the place, because you look at san anselmo where we had over four inches of rain. head over toward napa, it was close to two inches and santa rosa had a little bit over two inches of rain, so as you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, not a whole lot of breaks in the rain, and it's going to be chilly over these next few days, and this is as a cold front moves through. we are going to see still some scattered showers moving through, even a chance of storms. as we get a look at some of the heavier rain moving through parts of the east bay, i want to take you in closer as we see the rain moving through san lorenzo

and san leandro and moving over toward castro valley. we can even take this down to street level and show you exactly where the heaviest rain is coming through, but i take off the storm ranger radar and you can see the amount of detail that you lose and it's several minutes behind, so that's the reason why it's a really good tool to have something like a mobile done learn radar like we have hear in the bay area, right here on nbc. now, looking at some of the showers continuing through the peninsula, we'll see the rain off and on throughout today, and at times it may still be heavy. we'll watch out for the chance of thunderstorms. by tonight, snow levels will be dropping, that means that over our bay area hills, we could see some snow piling up over mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, mt. st. helena, we'll be watching some of the elevations above 2,500 feet. getting out the door for school in martinez, some scattered showers. make sure the kids have the rain gear and some extra layers, too, because it will be chilly and by tomorrow morning, wintry mix

possible, especially in the north bay, mountain snow. highs in the upper 40s and freezing temperatures in the valleys, as we go toward the middle of the work week. mike, it is very slow out there for quite a few spots around the bay. >> that's right, kari. we'll point out a couple. one of the main reasons why there is a big problem is the weather conditions we've been tracking all weekend. kari is telling you about the current conditions you see right here, a lot of activity on the map. it's tough to see. i pull off the radar, activity through oakland pushing toward 680 coming out of walnut creek and concord. the big problems here, we have closures for 84 through niles canyon. 35 over there, just west of woodside so those are two areas with mudslides. we have the traffic starting to build. folks heading down through sunol are getting by that closure, doing okay there, that's the good news, folks. that's a smoother flow of traffic. the east shore freeway not so bad. the bay bridge toll plaza standard for the backup there, but again, watch those wet roads, we've seen a number of spinouts reported throughout the bay. south 680 jammed up out of

concord and pleasant hill toward walnut creek, because of a crash right at the curve. so you see the traffic is jammed up on 680, this is 24 moving smoothly. waze map if you're coming out of pittsburg and bay point, can cut through down here and stay off of 680, because that's only 40 minutes for that drive, but be careful, you might be unfamiliar with the route. we show you the other two routes in there, twice as long, nbc bay area wazers the team where we share that information with you. and meanwhile, we get back out to the roadway, that's a tough drive for contra costa county but the thpeninsula and north b look nice. we're picking up wet roads and traffic. >> proceed with caution. thanks, mike. breaking news, that overnight mudslide stopping traffic in the east bay. at 6:30, we take a live look at conditions drivers are dealing with. elon musk makes a promise that one of his customers asks us to help him keep. i'm consumer investigator chris

"today in the bay's" meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that system for us. >> and it still continues this morning. we had such a wet weekend and waking up to more rain. as you get ready to head out, it's windy and some scattered showers moving through. we've got it on storm ranger, that's our mobile doppler radar and the red scan you're seeing there and some of the heaviest rain moving through parts of the

tri-valley from san ramon down to dublin, and then also some heavy rain picking up once again over livermore. as we get a closer look also at some of the spots where you may be dealing with some of that rain, also for the peninsula, as it moves over the santa cruz mountains, it will be approaching 280 here, within the next few minutes. so off and on rain will be what you'll have to deal with, along with the cooler temperatures, and we're also still going to see the rain moving toward the central valley and snow in the sierra, as you head out the door, in the south bay, san tta teresa some pockets of heavy rain later on this morning. rain is tracking rain and you said nails on the roadway? >> we have standing water in places, wood and nails. wood and nails are the problem, wood and nails, not wooden nails. the other problem south 680 jammed up on our live shot here, 24 moves smoothly over toward lafayet lafayette, toward the caldecott and the bay bridge where the backup is on because the metering lights are on.

680 jammed 242 past 24, just shy of main street where wood and nails are blocking your two lanes. we have a sweeper crew on scene but they need more cruise to clear the 2x4s in the roadway. the rest of the contra costa county drive moving slowly. there may be gusty winds at times. san francisco 101 at cesar chavez repair work for the median there. highway 84 is mashlgd as closed but i think that just changed. we got better news. >> big time. we've been covering that since we went on air at 4:30. we learned niles canyon road is back open. >> a mudslide was blocking both directions for hours earlier this morning. "today in the bay's" roz plater is live at the closure in fremont and roz, good news. >> reporter: it is good news and what a difference a few minutes makes. we suddenly saw the chp take down the road block and suddenly the road opened up, with traffic going in both directions now. again it had been shut down from

mission to sunol. that mudslide happening just before 4:00 this morning, it came down so hard, it struck a car, deploying that car's air bags. no one injured, we believe. at this point we don't know what accounted for the original estimate it might take a couple of days to get it cleaned up but we saw a bunch of heavy equipment coming in throughout the morning, starting about 5:00 this morning, so apparently they were able to get the cleanup done ahead of schedule. this niles canyon road from mission to sunol reopened now, traffic moving in both directions. apparently the cleanup taking a lot less time than anticipated. back to you. >> all right, good news it's open there. thanks a lot, roz. this morning, a grieving family is remembering a father killed in a wrong-way crash on highway 101 in san francisco. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live where the accident happened and emotional interview i understand as well, pete. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, laura and marcus. a very emotional interview as his family from concord is

trying to process the tragic incident and we're standing in front of where that accident took place on the 101 northbound freeway off-ramp in san francisco, just off fremont street, that's where that wrong-way driver entered the freeway going southbound, going the wrong way. in fact, we want to show you some of the video from when it happened. the wrong-way driver identified as 21-year-old kayla wilson. according to chp the incident happened roughly 2:30 sunday morning. she did die as a result of the crash and so did this victim. we're going to hear from his family in a moment. the vimd 40-year-old waheed etimad of concord. he came to the bay area from afghanistan. he received special permission after helping the united states military as a translator in afghanistan. our crews did speak with his family and a close friend about this tragic incident. >> he was a nice guy, but without him, we're nothing.

like he was the only one who cared about us. like without him, we're just nothing. >> who is going to drop off the kids to school and pick them up, and what kind of car they should use to do that? so obviously they had their own mini van and that was used for work and family. >> reporter: several cars and people were injured as a result of that crash. chp is investigating if the driver may have been under the influence at the time of this crash. etimad leave behind a wife and total of seven children, a big family, guys. a go fund me page is set up for the family to help them out and we have the information on our website at nbcbayarea.com. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> sad story there, pete, thanks so much for the update. it is 6:35 right now. and happening today, oakland teachers plan to announce whether they will strike. as we've been reporting, union members spent much of last week casting ballots of whether to

authorize that strike. teachers have been warning for weeks they are prepared to strike this month if the district does not agree to smaller class sizes, better wages and more resources for educators. the district says it's in a financial crisis and is planning to cut administrative jobs and possibly close 24 schools over the next five years. >> 6:36. new for you this morning, renewed calls by some uber and lyft drivers to carry guns. it comes after multiple attacks, one driver dead with an unborn baby and another driver recovering with a slashed throat. thom jensen joins us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, the driver in the new attack is now speaking from his hospital bed, and no doubt the ride share giants uber and lyft are receiving renewed requests from their drivers to be able to arm

themselves. this late's tack happened in the town of toleson, arizona, and police say that 45-year-old francisco diaz pulled out a knife and slit the uber driver's throat just as diaz was being dropped off. that driver now speaking from his hospital bed with more than 20 staples in his neck and bandages covering the defensive wounds on his hands. >> i've been doing this for two years, two years, and most of the time i drive at night, and i never in my life thought like this can come my way. >> reporter: this attack happened just four days after a tempe, arizona, lift driver and her unborn child were killed by a rider who allegedly stabbed the woman multiple times. nbc bay area has conducted a series of investigations into the dangers of ride sharing, and also exposed a scheme that could allow unlicensed drivers and criminals to get behind the wheel of those ride sharing

cars. some drivers who we have talked to said they already carry guns, but both uber and lyft strictly prohibit carrying firearms of any kind in their cars. we're live in walnut creek, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> wow. >> these events happen, this is a bigger debate. >> you've got to get the permit to carry and all that, too. thanks a lot, tom. on a completely different note, in the background of thom's shot and audio you heard the wet roadways, water kicking up behind the cars. better news as highway 84 reopened through niles canyon, roz plater told us about that and it did not affect the ace train which had to hold for track inspection. highway 35 is not between cupertino and lahonda on the lower right corner. a smooth flow of traffic except for here, south 680 jammed out of pleasant hill down off 242, down past the 24 interchange. we continue to have the lanes blocked by wood and nails that

spilled earlier this morning. that's a problem. the cleanup crew is there but the sweeper truck, they need a loader to move 2x4s out of the name. why would 2x4s be in the road, you look pudszzled. >> seems like a joke. >> to get to the other -- they're "bored"? >> rough commute for the riders. we have more rain coming today and for the weekend. here is a live look at our radar, as we see waves of rain coming through the bay area. so we're starting out with soggy weather, chilly temperatures and look at the weekend. we're still looking at cool temperatures, and more rain moving in, only a little bit of a break from the showers in between. and our temperatures that will be in the mid-50s, heading into friday, so as we get a look at some of the places you may be heading, maybe napa, it's still going to be windy and wet on friday.

this morning as you're trying to recover from staying up late, watching the game, and all the food you ate. as we get ready to head out the door, here is a look at our storm totals since friday, as we get a look at our richmond-san rafael bridge and the approach there, headed over toward san rafael. we are looking at, check that out, over 8.5 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains, since friday, and morgan hill had 3.5 inches of rain. san jose 1.75. dublin almost 1.75 there and we saw that also in redwood city, almost 1.5 inches and san francisco and then we take a live look in dublin, where it's still raining quite heavily and looking at rainfall totals in oakland and concord approaching an inch, and brentwood 1.5 inches or close to it. san anselmo had four inches of rain and as i look around i see the rainfall totals varying all over the bay area. so now as we start out, we're still going to measure some more as we go throughout the day, the

potential of getting anywhere from about a half an inch to three-quarters of an inch on top of what we've had and we also see some of the heaviest rain moving through parts of the tri-valley, and also over toward contra costa county. looking at some heavier rain moving through half moon bay over the santa cruz mountains, and now approaching redwood city, within the next few minutes. we are going to have a soggy drive for parts of the bay area this morning, as you get ready to head out. and a lot of waves of rain that will continue as we go throughout the day, but there will be some more breaks in between. as we go through our hour-by-hour outlook here we are at 9:30, the south bay getting in on heavy rain and also the chance of a win industry mix around mendocino and lake counties, later this morning and again tomorrow morning, but scattered showers off and on, it's not yet time to put away the umbrella and we'll also have a chance of some isolated thunderstorms and some gusty winds. there will also be a localized flood risk where some of the heavier rain comes down and then

by tonight the snow levels will be dropping so we may wake up tomorrow morning with bay area hills capped in snow. we're seeing a lot of snow in the sierra, we've been measuring it in feet there, and it won't taper off until tomorrow, but until then, we're still looking at the potential of getting several more feet between today and the next couple of days. and then after all of this clears out, freezing temperatures settle in, so that's another concern we have and more rain in time for the weekend. headed over to mike, you have a lot going on, on the roads. >> still the traffic alerts in walnut creek and another in san francisco. walnut creek live cam camera, you see the flashing lights just arrived two minutes ago, kari, looking at the cameras together and we saw southbound they're starting to block off your lanes off the right side, trying to push folks over to the lanes just south of there, to south of the 24 interchange where you see folks making the split, because the lanes are closed. still south of main. the bad news is with the trucks there, if they called the trucks in, i think they'll plan on having lanes closed for at least

another half hour to hour. haven't gotten an update from chp. we'll give you an alternate with waze. they mapped out a few routes and look similar. the times out of pittsburg and alamo, if you followed the suggested route the purple one they'll adapt. join nbc area wazers. over there is the worst part, contra costa county, highway 4 toward walnut creek. the east shore freeway moving smoothly, the backup at the bay bridge and in san francisco, south 101 we have two lanes closed at cesar chavez, they're still fixing the median from overnight crashes there. we have a slower drive from the bay bridge toward the 280 merge or split, depending on the way you look at it getting into or out of san francisco. meanwhile the rest of the bay shows a standard build. highway 84 good news, they reopened niles canyon earlier than i thought, so you can drive through the area, but don't, unless you absolutely know that roadway really well.
